The Potential Of Indonesian Microalgal Strains To Support Eastern White Shrimp (Litopenaeus Vannamei) Aquaculture, Wa Iba Jan 2016

The Potential Of Indonesian Microalgal Strains To Support Eastern White Shrimp (Litopenaeus Vannamei) Aquaculture, Wa Iba

Open Access Dissertations

Indonesia is well known for abundant aquatic resources, both marine and freshwater, including fishes, zooplankton and phytoplanktonic microalgae. However, relatively little information is available about microalgal resources despite their potential to be used as live feed in the hatchery phase of aquaculture of a number of marine species. The use of local microalgae is desirable in local hatcheries because they tend to grow better with high yield under local conditions, thus reducing the risk of culture crash and production cost while preventing disease vectors that may introduced by foreign microalgae strains. In this dissertation, the potential of Indonesian microalgae to …

Managing Racist Pasts: The Black Justice League’S Demand For Inclusion And Its Challenge To The Promise Of Diversity At Princeton University, Tomoyo Joshi Jan 2016

Managing Racist Pasts: The Black Justice League’S Demand For Inclusion And Its Challenge To The Promise Of Diversity At Princeton University, Tomoyo Joshi

Honors Papers

I examine online diversity initiative pages, student activism and administrative responses in Fall 2015 at Princeton University as a case study. In the first section, I analyze Princeton’s online diversity initiative page “Many Voices, One Future” by demonstrating how “diversity” becomes individualized, commodified, and quantified. In its claims to aspire to equality (or equal representation), the discourse of diversity ignores historical and sociopolitical contexts of oppression that produce and maintain difference in the first place. In the second section, I investigate how the actions of the Black Justice League challenge or the rhetoric of diversity that the administration embodies. Further, …

A Contrastive Study Of The Speech Act Of Refusal Among Efl Speakers / Zhao Chunli, Chunli Zhao Jan 2016

A Contrastive Study Of The Speech Act Of Refusal Among Efl Speakers / Zhao Chunli, Chunli Zhao

Student Works (2010-2019)

Refusal, as one of the most frequently performed speech acts in our daily lives, has recently gained increasing attention in pragmatics. In academic settings in Malaysia, for example, the opportunity for interaction frequently occurs among students from different cultural backgrounds. The purpose of this study is thus to investigate two groups of EFL speakers, namely Chinese and Iraqis, in their realization of the speech act of refusal in an academic setting. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, the study seeks to explore the similarities and differences of refusal strategies employed by Chinese (mainland China) and Iraqi EFL …

Guns And Drugs, Benjamin Levin Jan 2016

Guns And Drugs, Benjamin Levin

Publications

This Article argues that the increasingly prevalent critiques of the War on Drugs apply to other areas of criminal law. To highlight the broader relevance of these critiques, this Article uses as its test case the criminal regulation of gun possession. This Article identifies and distills three lines of drug war criticism and argues that they apply to possessory gun crimes in much the same way that they apply to drug crimes. Specifically, this Article focuses on: (1) race- and class-based critiques; (2) concerns about police and prosecutorial power; and (3) worries about the social and economic costs of mass …

Illustrations Of Nepantleras: Bridge Making Potential In Ana Castillo's So Far From God And The Guardians, Amanda Patrick Jan 2016

Illustrations Of Nepantleras: Bridge Making Potential In Ana Castillo's So Far From God And The Guardians, Amanda Patrick

All Master's Theses

Chicana literature to date has extensively illustrated the process of identity construction—the development of mestiza consciousness—as the means through which Mexican American females may thwart the agents of oppressive patriarchal authority in their lives. While this highly theoretical and politicized literature has contributed greatly to discussions of identity, agency, and the subjective self, many Chicana authors and activists express concerns regarding the fate of the Chicana/o collective. Some consider the relationship between feminist Chicanas and their more traditional families and communities to be irreconcilable. Using the theories of Gloria Anzaldúa, I argue that the novels So Far from God and …

Assessment Of Novel Algal Biomass Sources As Potential Ingredients In Diets For Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus), Ben Eynon Jan 2016

Assessment Of Novel Algal Biomass Sources As Potential Ingredients In Diets For Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus), Ben Eynon

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The aquaculture sector is currently seeking alternative feed ingredients to ensure future socioeconomic and environmental sustainability; microalgae sources are seen to be a promising option. Two nutrition trials were conducted in order to assess substituting plant based protein sources in diets for juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), with a range of inclusion levels of two proprietary defatted microalgae samples (Nannochloropsis sp. and Chlorella sp.). The experimental algal ingredients utilised were by-products sourced from a pilot-scale biofuel operation. In both trials all experimental algal diets, along with their respective algal free controls, were isonitrogenous and isoenergetic. Fish growth performance, feed utilisation, …

Perceptions In Predicting Actor And Partner Sexual And Relational Satisfaction In Couple Relationships, Lucia Novakova Jan 2016

Perceptions In Predicting Actor And Partner Sexual And Relational Satisfaction In Couple Relationships, Lucia Novakova

Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences

The present exploration of perceptual accuracy and bias in romantic relationships bridges a gap in the literature on the ability of partners to estimate one another’s level of relational and sexual satisfaction, and its impact on their own and their partner’s level of satisfaction. A sample of 50 couples, recruited internationally, in continuously monogamous relationships of at least six-months in length completed online assessments of their relationship. The degree of accuracy and bias of their perception was established by comparing actor’s estimates of their partner’s satisfaction with the partner’s actual, self-reported satisfaction scores. The actor-partner interdependence model (APIM; Kenny, Kashy, …

Affordances And Possibilities Around The Personal Portable Library In Art And Research, Henry Warwick Jan 2016

Affordances And Possibilities Around The Personal Portable Library In Art And Research, Henry Warwick

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The Personal Portable Library is basically a very simple device. It is a hard drive or USB memory stick filled with files. What kinds of files depends on curator or librarian's interests. Many people have hard drives filled with music, and they share drives, USB sticks, CDRs and DVDRs filled with music. In fact, according to the RIAA, Offline File Sharing exceeds online file sharing of music. [1] Music files, like font files, are small and easily transferred from one machine to another. Video files are another issue. A film can be 2 or more gigabytes in size …

Attitudes And Practices Among College Students Relative To Personal Listening Device Usage And Hearing Conservation, Molly Grace Williams Jan 2016

Attitudes And Practices Among College Students Relative To Personal Listening Device Usage And Hearing Conservation, Molly Grace Williams

Honors Theses

As technology has advanced, the popularity of personal listening devices (PLD) has become widespread among the millennial generation. It is normal in today's culture to see members of the millennial generation using their PLDs in most any setting. Due to this growth in popularity and usage of PLDs, there is an increased and relatively undocumented opportunity for noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) among the people in the millennial generation. In order to research the effects of this shift in culture relative to PLD usage, college-aged members of the millennial generation were asked to participate in a study via word of …

Be Your Own Guru: Authoritarianism And The Problem Of The Guru In Conscious Evolution, Mcauley, Charles E. Jan 2016

Be Your Own Guru: Authoritarianism And The Problem Of The Guru In Conscious Evolution, Mcauley, Charles E.

Journal of Conscious Evolution

This paper is an exploration of the problematic nature of the guru/disciple relationship, specifically, in Western Society. It begins with a discussion of the nature of spirituality and the spiritual quest. To contextualize the process, I also discuss my own spiritual path based in Roman Catholicism, Taoism, Buddhism and my thoughts on the philosophy of Krishnamurti. I explore the topic of the authoritarian follower in some depth. Its connection is symbiotic to the existence of the authoritarian leader. This connection is demonstrated within this paper as well. Additionally, I look at the flaws in some well-known guru figures and how …

University Honors Theses

This paper examines the ways in which the Middle East is taught to high school students in Portland Public School. Specifically, it focuses on the required history courses, Modern World History and United States History for Freshman and Juniors, respectively. Beginning with a definition of the Middle East, this paper starts by placing itself and the author within a discourse community of educators, historians, and writers who discuss the issues with incorporating multiple points of view into their curriculum. After a discussion of the methods by which the data was collected, this paper concludes by offering a description of that …

Control, Care, And Stress: Parenting's Effect On Child Internalizing Symptoms, Maysa Kaskas Jan 2016

Control, Care, And Stress: Parenting's Effect On Child Internalizing Symptoms, Maysa Kaskas

LSU Master's Theses

Theoretical models of childhood psychopathology suggest that the parent-child relationship serves an influential role in the development and maintenance of internalizing disorders such as anxiety and depression. However, there is a great deal of inconsistency in the research literature on the predictive power of parenting variables such as parental control and parental care. Furthermore, these parenting variables are often poorly defined and inconsistently operationalized across studies, hampering interpretation of results and limiting conclusions on the strength of the effect. Additionally, few studies have examined the role of parenting with careful attention to moderators. In order to investigate these problems, 189 …

Conflict Resolution Processes In End-Of-Life Care Disputes Between Families And Healthcare Providers In Canada, Matthew P. Ponsford Jan 2016

Conflict Resolution Processes In End-Of-Life Care Disputes Between Families And Healthcare Providers In Canada, Matthew P. Ponsford

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Conflict at the end-of-life, particularly between families and health-care providers, involves many complex factors; differing opinions surrounding a patient’s prognosis, cultural differences, moral values, and religious beliefs, associated costs, internal family dynamics, and of course, legal ramifications. Legislative reform at both the provincial and federal levels with respect to assisted dying has had far-reaching implications for healthcare decisionmaking for families, healthcare providers, religious groups, and others. These reforms provide the backdrop for this paper, which examines the conflict resolution processes that can provide a solution amidst an often stressful, costly, and time-consuming ordeal. This paper reviews several processes, but focuses …

Unworking Milton: Steps To A Georgics Of The Mind, Steven Swarbrick Jan 2016

Unworking Milton: Steps To A Georgics Of The Mind, Steven Swarbrick

Publications and Research

Traditionally read as a poem about laboring subjects who gain power through abstract and abstracting forms of bodily discipline, John Milton’s Paradise Lost (1667, 1674) more compellingly foregrounds the erotics of the Garden as a space where humans and nonhumans intra-act materially and sexually. Following Christopher Hill, who long ago pointed to not one but two revolutions in the history of seventeenth-century English radicalism—the first, ‘the one which succeeded[,] . . . the protestant ethic’; and the second, ‘the revolution which never happened,’ which sought ‘communal property, a far wider democracy[,] and rejected the protestant ethic’—I show how Milton’s Paradise …

Intended Continued Use Social Networking Sites: Effects On Job Satisfaction And Performance, Ned Kock, Murad Moqbel, Kevin Barton, Valerie L. Bartelt

Information Systems Faculty Publications

Hedonic information systems are those that are used primarily for pleasure. Previous research has established that the intention to use hedonic information systems is explained mainly by perceived ease of use and perceived enjoyment, with perceived usefulness to one’s job being given less importance. Facebook could be seen as a hedonic information system. This paper employs a cross-sectional survey of 178 professionals who used Facebook to various degrees. Predictably, the authors’ empirical results show that perceived enjoyment is indeed a much stronger determinant of intended continued Facebook use than ease of use or usefulness to one’s job, explaining a considerable …

The Case Of Three Karen Refugee Women And Their Children: Literacy Practices In A Family Literacy Context, Sabrina Dm Quadros, Loukia K. Sarroub Jan 2016

The Case Of Three Karen Refugee Women And Their Children: Literacy Practices In A Family Literacy Context, Sabrina Dm Quadros, Loukia K. Sarroub

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

The lack of research about the Karen—one of 135 ethnic groups from Myanmar—limits literacy educators charged with educating this refugee population in public schools. In this case study the authors explore the literacy practices of Karen families when at school and in their homes and within an ESL family literacy program. The case of these refugee families and their experiences are analyzed within a sociocultural theoretical framework along with a focus on literacy adaptation through the lenses of crosscultural studies, adult and language teachers involved in literacy practices, and literacy studies. Four core themes emerged from participant observation, including adult/ …

The Age Of Intervention: Addiction, Culture, And Narrative During The War On Drugs, Ashleigh M. Hardin Jan 2016

The Age Of Intervention: Addiction, Culture, And Narrative During The War On Drugs, Ashleigh M. Hardin

Theses and Dissertations--English

While addiction narratives have been a feature of American culture at least since the early 19th century’s temperance tales, the creation of the Johnson Intervention in the late 1960s and the corresponding advent of the War on Drugs waged by U.S. Presidents have wrought significant changes in the stories told about addiction and recovery. These changes reflect broader changes in conceptions of agency and the relationship of subject to culture in the postmodern era. In the way that it iterates the imperatives of the War on Drugs initiated by Richard Nixon, the rhetoric of successive U.S. Presidents provides a …

Patriarchal Trauma In Appalachian Literature, Michelle Justus Jan 2016

Patriarchal Trauma In Appalachian Literature, Michelle Justus

Theses and Dissertations--English

Patriarchal Trauma in Appalachian Literature examines the effects of subjugation on women as it is represented in three novels set in Appalachia. I define patriarchal trauma as an act causing mental anguish to a woman and perpetrated against her because she is a woman. I use the term to encompass violent, catastrophic harms but more particularly to pinpoint the traumatic effects of the quotidian, systemic deprivation of women’s autonomy. Reconsidering classic texts such as James Still’s River of Earth and Robert Morgan’s Gap Creek: The Story of a Marriage as narratives of women’s trauma establishes a lineage on the subject, …

Distinctly American: Performing Humanity In African American Literature From Proto To Post New Negro Renaissance, Julie A. Naviaux

Theses and Dissertations--English

This project demonstrates how African American literature from the 1910s through the 1940s uses performance in order to stage debates within African American identity and American culture. Drawing on recent literary scholarship, performance studies, and early critical writing on African American art and performance, the project examines scenes of public performance in order to show how these literary scenes create space to investigate social and cultural constructions. The project investigates the ways performances within the texts also critique performances of race, gender, and class. Within these performance scenes, the literary texts also critique the audiences’ reactions to the artistic product …

Northside, Jesse L. Houk Jan 2016

Northside, Jesse L. Houk

Theses and Dissertations--English

The Northside of Lexington, Kentucky is an area with its own culture, community and art. While living in this community I was able to learn, grow and develop alongside this newly renovated area. The people and their lives intersect in such a way that creates a tension at times. However, many social awareness advocates vie for the success of this neighborhood for many years to come. The objective of studying such an area as the Northside in Lexington is to focus on the similarites rather than the differences in culture, community and artistic endeavor. With a collection of essays and …

Why Do Some Grant Proposals Win The Funds And Others Fail? Genre Analysis For The Abstracts Of Grant Proposals Submitted By The Health Science Center Researchers To The National Institutes Of Health, Yassin Ismaeel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study is an endeavor to investigate the textual linguistic factors that lead to successful grant proposals. Grant proposals have different sections. The focus was on the abstracts of grant proposals. The abstract is the first most piece read by the funding agency. There are many important contextual and situational conditions that directly affect the winning of the funds. This current study aims at the linguistic aspects of the abstracts. Twenty abstracts, chosen from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) website, were used as unit samples for the analysis. The coding units were the sentences existed in these texts. The …
