Dwelling In American: Dissent, Empire, And Globalization, John Muthyala Jan 2016

Dwelling In American: Dissent, Empire, And Globalization, John Muthyala

Dartmouth College Press

About the Book

Globalization is not the Americanization of the world, argues John Muthyala. Rather, it is an uneven social, cultural, economic, and political process in which the policies and aspirations of powerful nation-states are entangled with the interests of other empires, nation-states, and communities. Dwelling in American: Dissent, Empire, and Globalization takes up a bold challenge, critiquing scholarship on American empire that views the United States as either an exceptional threat to the world or the only hope for the future. It does so in order to provincialize America, to understand it from outside the borders of nation and …

Rhetoric And Collective Necessity: The Declaration Of Independence, Patrick Belanger Jan 2016

Rhetoric And Collective Necessity: The Declaration Of Independence, Patrick Belanger

HCOM Faculty Publications and Presentations

This essay examines how the U.S. Declaration of Independence justified revolution in the midst of a volatile set of political exigencies. To engage and conciliate those colonists who held fragile or ambivalent attitudes toward the idea of independence, this short document strove to construct a narrative that vindicated mass political upheaval and laid an explanatory groundwork for the efforts to come. The Declaration is more than a starting point; it was negotiated within history at a specific juncture, and informed by the intellectual climate of the 18th century. I argue that its pivotal strategy marshals a Deist conception of Reason …

Tongues As A Site Of Subversion: An Analysis From The Perspective Of Postcolonial Politics Of Language, Ekaputra Tupamahu Jan 2016

Tongues As A Site Of Subversion: An Analysis From The Perspective Of Postcolonial Politics Of Language, Ekaputra Tupamahu

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

In this article I discuss the close relationship between colonialism and the expansion of language. Language is always politically contested. A language can become an international language today because it has a long history of colonization and subjugation of other groups of people. I analyze the sociopolitical dimension of tongues by engaging, among others, linguist Roman Jakobson, philosopher Michel Foucault, and cultural theorist Judith Butler. By placing tongues in the context of the politics of language, I aim to show that the practice of speaking in tongues can be viewed as a strategic subversion and disruption of the regime of …

Hush... : The Dangers Of Silence In Academic Libraries, Jessica Schomberg, Kirsti Cole Jan 2016

Hush... : The Dangers Of Silence In Academic Libraries, Jessica Schomberg, Kirsti Cole

Library Services Publications

This article critiques the idea that civility rhetoric decreases workplace bullying or discrimination. We use Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to do a rhetorical analysis of a campus-wide civility campaign in contrast with literature about civility in libraries. To combat discrimination and bullying, we need to be attentive to systemic power dynamics and to rhetoric designed to enforce compliance and conformity. We conclude with recommendations about how to raise our voices instead of silencing our peers.

A Systematic Review Of Studies Using Gettier-Type Thought Experiments, Maximilian Popiel Jan 2016

A Systematic Review Of Studies Using Gettier-Type Thought Experiments, Maximilian Popiel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Experimental epistemologists have recently begun using Gettier-type thought experiments to test various philosophic theories. Generally speaking, these thought experiments present a justified, true belief which intuitively does not seem like knowledge. Despite the studies using this same general definition, they have exercised a myriad of different particular Gettier cases and experimental methods. Some results have been conflicting, or otherwise counter-intuitive, and interpretations of their findings have been divergent. The present study was a systematic review of these experiments, with a focus on experimental methods. Studies were compared on readability and factors effecting participant fatigue and comprehension. The results suggest that …

How The Greek Press Constructed The "Greek Economic Crisis", Maria Elena Kuntz Jan 2016

How The Greek Press Constructed The "Greek Economic Crisis", Maria Elena Kuntz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since 2008, there has been a surge of interest in and research on the relationship between news media and economic reporting, particularly as it concerns financial crises. The 2008 U.S. subprime mortgage crisis, quickly followed by the economic crisis that began to unfold in Greece in 2009, spurred researchers to examine how newspapers around the world report on the complex, globalized economy. In the pursuit of understanding transnational economic processes, publics rely on news media to provide information about the meaning of economic events, especially crises. As such, newspapers are key players in constructing the narratives of crises.

Interpreting The Intangible: Challenges To The Display Of Dance Objects In Museums, Kathryn Louise Brundige Grossman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes Indigenous and non-Western dance objects in museums, examining the role of theory from material culture studies, critical museology and museum education on approaches to their interpretation and display. To explore this topic, I conducted a comparative analysis of Indigenous and non-Western dance object displays at four museums - Denver Art Museum, Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art in Tulsa, Oklahoma and the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History in Norman, Oklahoma - investigating the use of Native voice, reflexive analysis and multisensory elements in the exhibits' organization, narrative …

A Cross-Cultural Study Of Psychological Well-Being Among British And Malaysian Fire Fighters, Mohd. Dahlan Hj. A. Malek, Ida Shafinaz Mohd Jan 2016

A Cross-Cultural Study Of Psychological Well-Being Among British And Malaysian Fire Fighters, Mohd. Dahlan Hj. A. Malek, Ida Shafinaz Mohd

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Psychological consideration has always been a part of society and it usually relates to values, beliefs, ethnicity and gender. This is the essence of cultural psychology. In recent times, this branch of psychology has developed the new arm of Cross-Cultural Psychology, an extension of psychology covering the influence on behaviour when cultural groups interact. This study is a comparative study of two cultural groups, namely Malaysian and British fire fighters. Sources of occupational stress and their impact on psychological wellbeing were examined in a questionnaire survey of 1053 British and Malaysian fire fighters. The role of coping strategies as moderating …

Locating The Self In Autobiographical Memories: A New Approach To Analysis, Radka Antalíková, Manuel L. De La Mata, AndréS SantamaríA, Mercedes Cubero, Samuel Arias, Tia G. B. Hansen Jan 2016

Locating The Self In Autobiographical Memories: A New Approach To Analysis, Radka Antalíková, Manuel L. De La Mata, AndréS SantamaríA, Mercedes Cubero, Samuel Arias, Tia G. B. Hansen

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Systematic cross-cultural variation in autobiographical memory has been reported in numerous previous research. Variations have often been interpreted as mirroring differences in culturally diverging self-conceptions, implying that content characteristics of autobiographical memories can be used as indirect measures of self. However, a majority of these characteristics rest on the traditional independence vs. interdependence dimension, and might only be suitable for typically Western and Eastern populations. Other content characteristics could be more instrumental for “locating” the self in autobiographical memories, such as the incidence of actions, mental states and reflections. We therefore propose a new approach to content analysis of autobiographical …

Cross-Cultural Differences In The Use Of Disciplinary Methods Among Chinese, Immigrant Chinese And English Mothers, Ching-Yu Huang Jan 2016

Cross-Cultural Differences In The Use Of Disciplinary Methods Among Chinese, Immigrant Chinese And English Mothers, Ching-Yu Huang

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Researchers have long studied parenting practices, and have recently paid increasing attention to cross-cultural differences. Unfortunately, most of the research has only examined self-report data; studies including both self-report and observational data are still very rare. This study examined the disciplinary methods of mothers (of 5- to 7-year-old children) in a cross-cultural sample (N = 89: 30 Chinese in Taiwan, 30 Chinese immigrants in the UK, and 29 non-immigrant white English in the UK) using both questionnaires and observational data. Cultural differences were found between groups both in reported, as well as observed parenting. The Taiwanese mothers reported greater …

Culture, Emotional Expression And Parental Socialization Strategies Among Two-Year-Old Israeli Toddlers, Manal Khoury Karayanni, Jenny Kurman Jan 2016

Culture, Emotional Expression And Parental Socialization Strategies Among Two-Year-Old Israeli Toddlers, Manal Khoury Karayanni, Jenny Kurman

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

One of the most important developments in childhood is the development of emotional expression and its regulation. The capacity for the deliberate modulation of one’s behavior and emotion develops mainly in the second year, and it is considered a key developmental milestone that markedly transforms the child’s ability to function in the social environment (Kochanska, Coy, & Murray, 2001; Maccoby, 2007). Social norms, established by culture, dictate how, where, when and to whom specific emotions are expressed (Garrett-Peters & Fox, 2007). These norms are specific rules taught in a specific culture and dictate which emotional expressions are socially desirable in …

Cultural Perspectives On Ingroups Versus Outgroups And Shame Experiences, Bai Lin, Bee Chin Ng Jan 2016

Cultural Perspectives On Ingroups Versus Outgroups And Shame Experiences, Bai Lin, Bee Chin Ng

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The concept of self varies across cultures: in some cultures, individuals tend to see themselves as interdependent on others, and clear distinction is made between in-groups and out-groups because in-group members are seen as part of the “BIG SELF”. In other cultures individuals see themselves as independent and autonomous and have a less salient boundary between in-groups and out-groups. Little empirical work has been done on how such different cultural perspectives on in-groups, versus out-groups, shape emotional experiences. Although emotions are always internally experienced, these experiences often involve interpersonal and social interactions, and therefore how we think of ourselves in …

Dietary Transition And Obesity In Selected Arabic-Speaking Countries: A Review Of The Current Evidence, Basil H. Aboul-Enein, J. Bernstein, A. C. Neary

Health & Wellness Department Faculty Publications and Research

Escalating obesity rates have become a significant public health problem in the Middle East and North Africa [‎MENA]‎ region and have been associated with shifts towards a westernized diet. This integrative review aimed to examine the current dietary trends and transitions and their association with obesity in Arabic-speaking countries of the MENA region. Relevant databases were searched for studies in MENA countries between 1998 and 2014 that investigated obesity trends and changes in dietary patterns at the regional level in all age groups. A total of 39 articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria. All the articles noted that obesity was increasingly …

Investigating Organizational Culture In High-Needs, High-Teacher-Retention Schools, Sheila R. Akinleye Jan 2016

Investigating Organizational Culture In High-Needs, High-Teacher-Retention Schools, Sheila R. Akinleye

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Teachers and principals from high-needs, high-performing high schools across the state of Indiana completed a School Culture Survey, which included open-ended questions designed to determine the impact of organizational culture on teacher retention. Participants completed 264 electronic surveys. Both Pearsons and Spearmans correlation analyses found evidence supporting the null hypothesis that organizational culture has no impact on teacher retention. However, findings gathered through a qualitative analysis of teachers open-ended responses on the survey found themes supporting the notion that the organizational culture of a High-Needs School does have a bearing on a teachers stated reason why he or she would …
