Transformasi Konflik Aceh Dan Relasi Sosialpolitik Di Era Desentralisasi, Suadi Zainal

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

This article aims to analyze the settlement of a prolonged conflict between the Free Aceh Movement (Gerakan Aceh Merdeka/GAM) and the Indonesian Government through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of Helsinki that had implications on changing the law for Aceh. Some previous studies stated that Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as a win-win solution has been working well and give a better chance to end the separatist conflict in Aceh. However, This article shows that MoU Helsinki is only bring negative peace to Aceh, because its implementation through Law on Governing Aceh (LoGA) has reduced authorities of Aceh to govern itself …

The Past, Present, And Future Of Marketing Research In Asia, Jaihak Chung Jan 2016

The Past, Present, And Future Of Marketing Research In Asia, Jaihak Chung

Asia Marketing Journal

The lack of international research networks in Asia has been a major barrier in bridging scattered Asian academic societies. As a result, most researchers in Asia are not familiar with which journals they can access for their research, nor where they can submit their valuable research manuscripts. Asian Marketing Journal (AMJ) and the International Conference of Asian Marketing Associations (ICAMA), both of which are managed by Asian scholars for Asian scholars, are expected to take on such roles to make a significant contribution to Asian academic societies by encouraging them to study and share research topics that are more relevant …

Solving The Mystery Of Consistent Negative/Low Net Promoter Score (Nps) In Cross-Cultural Marketing Research, Sanjay Seth, Don Scott, Chad Svihel, Shigematsu Jan 2016

Solving The Mystery Of Consistent Negative/Low Net Promoter Score (Nps) In Cross-Cultural Marketing Research, Sanjay Seth, Don Scott, Chad Svihel, Shigematsu

Asia Marketing Journal

This paper has identified some theoretical reasons and empirical evidence for negative scores that occur in Japan and Korea or unstable NPS scores that can be experienced. A psychological analysis of NPS results sheds light on the validity of the negative NPS scores that are often found in Japan and Korea. Usually customer experience surveys utilize a “single stimulus” such as the “company” or the “company’s products / services.” However, in the case of the “recommendation to friend” question of the NPS system there are two stimuli namely the “company product/service” and the influence of “friends.” Hence, the survey outcomes …

Peluang Dan Tantangan Undang-Undang Desa Dalam Upaya Demokratisasi Tata Kelola Sumber Daya Alam Desa: Perspektif Agraria Kritis, Mohamad Shohibuddin Jan 2016

Peluang Dan Tantangan Undang-Undang Desa Dalam Upaya Demokratisasi Tata Kelola Sumber Daya Alam Desa: Perspektif Agraria Kritis, Mohamad Shohibuddin

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

Law Number 6 of 2014 on Village—apart from its political contribution in democratizing statevillage relation—has a fundamental limitation on natural resource issues in the village in the light of agrarian and ecological crises. This Law offers a minor elaboration on natural resource issues and provides limited authority to the village on this field, while no reference is made to the problem of inequality in community’s access to local natural resources. Confronted with such structural challenges, it is argued that “struggle for village autonomy” will hardly lead to significant social transformation without involving attempts to establish just and sustainable natural resource …

Dari Islamisme Ke “Premanisme”: Pergeseranorientasi Gerakan Kelompok Islam Radikal Diera Desentralisasi Demokrasi, Nur Kafid

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

This article was wrote based on a study to describe the shifting orientation of hard-line Islamic group in the decentralization of democratic era and its influences factor: from “Islamism” to “premanism”. Islamism, which at the beginning used as the main issue, has been shifted to occupying the economic resources. Through the qualitative method, the data gathered showed that this changing orientation as the “metamorphosed” form of movement which becomes one of their survival ways. Political clientelism practiced by New Order regime has been re-emerging in the different types. Patron which at the time is fully dominated by the government leader …

The Role Of Motivational Systems And Emotions In Virtual Work, Steven A. Murphy, Michael J. Hine, Sandra Kiffin-Petersen Dr Jan 2016

The Role Of Motivational Systems And Emotions In Virtual Work, Steven A. Murphy, Michael J. Hine, Sandra Kiffin-Petersen Dr

Communications of the IIMA

The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of the behavioural activation system (BAS), the behavioural inhibition system (BIS) and emotions in virtual work. BIS was found to have significant positive relationships with anger, anxiety, annoyance, nervousness, and distress. There were indications of emotional contagion between research confederates and participants. Self-report skill knowledge and the skill role of the research confederate both had significant relationships with performance. Self-report skill knowledge was fully mediated by the skill role played by the research confederate. Managers of virtual teams need to be aware of individual differences such as motivational systems and …

The Implications Of Doing Gender In The Digital Dating World, Brianna May Badili Jan 2016

The Implications Of Doing Gender In The Digital Dating World, Brianna May Badili

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This study investigates digital dating and how men and women function within the phenomena in terms of gendered communication. The theory of semiotics, as described by CK Ogden and Roland Barthes, was used as a frame to analyze photographs, text, and actions among men and women particularly on the application Tinder to understand the construction of gender within a digital dating world. Original research was conducted using 15 participants, 11 female and 4 male, with 15-50 minute interviews, investigating their experiences with symbols and exploring gendered communication and symbols that perpetuate ideas about gender roles within dating in online settings. …

Taking Action: The Desiring Subjects Of Neoliberal Feminism In India, Hemangini Gupta Jan 2016

Taking Action: The Desiring Subjects Of Neoliberal Feminism In India, Hemangini Gupta

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper reflects on an emergent brand of feminist activism in India that responds to everyday sexual violence against women in public. I focus specifically on the efforts of middle class women who organize through online media to conduct interventions in urban Indian public spaces. I review these recent feminist interventions and locate them within a historical review of the women’s movement in India to suggest that contemporary feminist organizing embodies and reflects India’s turn to neoliberalism in the 1990s. While neoliberal reforms have been analyzed within the terms of political economy, this paper extends existing research to consider how …

Resisting The Male Gaze: Feminist Responses To The "Normatization" Of The Female Body In Western Culture, Diane Ponterotto Jan 2016

Resisting The Male Gaze: Feminist Responses To The "Normatization" Of The Female Body In Western Culture, Diane Ponterotto

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper attempts to present a feminist critique of the social and political promotion in Western culture of a univocal model of female corporeity imposed on women, and consequently detrimental to female subjectivity and agency. Starting from the Foucauldian position concerning social oppression determined by the disciplinary gaze of power structures, the paper discusses perspectives of resistance to the patriarchally-motivated scrutiny of the female body, and to the mass-media induced coercion of conformity to the normatized model for the female body in contemporary society.

Development Paradoxes: Feminist Solidarity, Alternative Imaginaries And New Spaces, Elora Halim Chowdhury Jan 2016

Development Paradoxes: Feminist Solidarity, Alternative Imaginaries And New Spaces, Elora Halim Chowdhury

Journal of International Women's Studies

In his seminal work Encountering Development: The Making and Unmaking of the Third World (1995), post-development scholar Arturo Escobar likens development to a chimera. My work builds on a sophisticated body of post-development and transnational feminist theory drawing on conceptions of the relationship of representations of development in the Third World to the interconnected webs of various transnational patriarchal and economic dominations that affect, and are affected by, the realities of marginalized communities in the Global South. In particular, I am concerned with how development discourses interlock with global systemic hierarchies of race, gender, class as well as structural oppressions, …

Trauma, Shame And Performance: Towards A New Topography Of Affects In Black Queer Identities, Maite Escudero-Alías Jan 2016

Trauma, Shame And Performance: Towards A New Topography Of Affects In Black Queer Identities, Maite Escudero-Alías

Journal of International Women's Studies

Haitian American feminist and lesbian activist MilDred Gerestant has become one of the most acclaimed gender performers who best illustrates the malleability of gender, race and sexuality in the reconstruction of black queer identities. Drawing on interdisciplinary theoretical frameworks like trauma studies, queer theory and affect theory, my contribution analyses MilDred’s gender performances as creative attempts to surpass negative affects often attached to minority identities. By exploring the affect of shame as a productive enactment of transformation and hope, rather than as a source of numbness and suffering, this article aims to offer an alternative epistemological paradigm of feminist feeling …

Lord Bute And Conservative Scottish Nationalism: British Home Rule Movements In The 1890s And 90s, Ryan Blank, Paul Kerry Jan 2016

Lord Bute And Conservative Scottish Nationalism: British Home Rule Movements In The 1890s And 90s, Ryan Blank, Paul Kerry

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In the 1880s and 90s, the individual kingdoms and principalities that make up the United Kingdom experienced a revival of nationalistic sentiment. For the English, their national identity was tied to the Empire. The Celtic peoples re-invented nationalistic traditions, costume, and revived national languages. Building on the Romantic Movement, Celtic nationalists promoted strong national identities and legendary histories; however, the nationalism of the 1890s in Wales and Scotland was not anti-Empire even though it was anti-United Kingdom. This project will investigate Welsh and Scottish nationalism, particularly the Home Rule movements, through the lens of the writings and activities of a …

Religion And Fairness In The Ultimatum Game: Examining Mennonite Beliefs And Actions, Chris D. Gingrich, Ryan Swartzentruber, Jessica H. Kraybill Jan 2016

Religion And Fairness In The Ultimatum Game: Examining Mennonite Beliefs And Actions, Chris D. Gingrich, Ryan Swartzentruber, Jessica H. Kraybill

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

This study examines religion's impact on ultimatum game outcomes by focusing on Mennonite students, faculty, and staff at Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) in Virginia, USA. Despite doctrinal statements emphasizing community and material concern for the poor, Mennonite offers in the game are not statistically different from other Christian groups. However, there is some indication that the mean offer in this particular sample exceeds those in existing studies. One possible reason for the higher offers could be the EMU campus ethos that emphasizes social justice issues. Also, the higher offer values suggest increased altruism if Proposers correctly foresaw that Responders would …

Modeling Postpartum Depression In Rats: Theoretic And Methodological Issues, Ming Li, Shinn-Yi Chou Jan 2016

Modeling Postpartum Depression In Rats: Theoretic And Methodological Issues, Ming Li, Shinn-Yi Chou

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The postpartum period is when a host of changes occur at molecular, cellular, physiological and behavioral levels to prepare female humans for the challenge of maternity. Alteration or prevention of these normal adaptions is thought to contribute to disruptions of emotion regulation, motivation and cognitive abilities that underlie postpartum mental disorders, such as postpartum depression. Despite the high incidence of this disorder, and the detrimental consequences for both mother and child, its etiology and related neurobiological mechanisms remain poorly understood, partially due to the lack of appropriate animal models. In recent decades, there have been a number of attempts to …

The Pseudorabies Virus Protein, Pul56, Enhances Virus Dissemination And Virulence But Is Dispensable For Axonal Transport, Gina R. Daniel, Patricia J. Sollars, Gary E. Pickard, Gregory A. Smith Jan 2016

The Pseudorabies Virus Protein, Pul56, Enhances Virus Dissemination And Virulence But Is Dispensable For Axonal Transport, Gina R. Daniel, Patricia J. Sollars, Gary E. Pickard, Gregory A. Smith

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Neurotropic herpesviruses exit the peripheral nervous system and return to exposed body surfaces following reactivation from latency. The pUS9 protein is a critical viral effector of the anterograde axonal transport that underlies this process. We recently reported that while pUS9 increases the frequency of sorting of newly assembled pseudorabies virus particles to axons from the neural soma during egress, subsequent axonal transport of individual virus particles occurs with wild-type kinetics in the absence of the protein. Here, we examine the role of a related pseudorabies virus protein, pUL56, during neuronal infection. The findings indicate that pUL56 is a virulence factor …

Faculty Publications

Marine algae are instrumental in carbon cycling and atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) regulation. One group, coccolithophores, uses carbon to photosynthesize and to calcify, covering their cells with chalk platelets (coccoliths). How ocean acidification influences coccolithophore calcification is strongly debated, and the effects of carbonate chemistry changes in the geological past are poorly understood. This paper relates degree of coccolith calcification to cellular calcification, and presents the first records of size-normalized coccolith thickness spanning the last 14 Myr from tropical oceans. Degree of calcification was highest in the low-pH, high-CO2 Miocene ocean, but decreased significantly between 6 and 4 Myr ago. …

When Friends’ And Society’S Expectations Collide: A Longitudinal Study Of Moral Decision-Making And Personality Across College, Kathryn L. Bollich, Patrick L. Hill, Peter D. Harms, Joshua Jackson Jan 2016

When Friends’ And Society’S Expectations Collide: A Longitudinal Study Of Moral Decision-Making And Personality Across College, Kathryn L. Bollich, Patrick L. Hill, Peter D. Harms, Joshua Jackson

P. D. Harms Publications

Early adulthood is a developmentally important time period, with many novel life events needing to be traversed for the first time. Despite this important transition period, few studies examine the development of moral decision-making processes during this critical life stage. In the present study, college students completed moral decision-making measures during their freshman and senior years of college. Results indicate that, across four years, moral decision-making demonstrates considerable rank-order stability as well as change, such that people become more likely to help a friend relative to following societal rules. To help understand the mechanisms driving changes in moral decision-making processes, …
