The Suffragettes: Alice Paul, Ronald G. Helms Ph.D. Feb 2016

The Suffragettes: Alice Paul, Ronald G. Helms Ph.D.

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

One cannot study the history of democracy in the United States without investigating the courageous vision of Alice Paul. In From equal suffrage to equal rights, Christine Lunardini has written the definitive history of Alice Paul’s contribution to equality and democracy. Lunardini (xiii) documents the efforts of Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Carrie Chapman Catt of the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA), and Lunardini observes that Carrie Chapman Catt, as leader of NAWSA in 1913, thought that woman suffrage would not be attained in her lifetime.

Gendered Geographies In Puerto Rican Culture: Spaces, Sexualities, Solidarities, Radost A. Rangelova Feb 2016

Gendered Geographies In Puerto Rican Culture: Spaces, Sexualities, Solidarities, Radost A. Rangelova

Gettysburg College Faculty Books

This is a critical study of the construction of gendered spaces through feminine labor and capital in Puerto Rican literature and film (1950-2010). It analyzes gendered geographies and forms of emotional labor, and the possibility that they generate within the material and the symbolic spaces of the family house, the factory, the beauty salon and the brothel. It argues that by challenging traditional images of femininity texts by authors and film directors like Rosario Ferré, Carmen Lugo Filippi, Magali García Ramis, Mayra Santos-Febres, Sonia Fritz and Ana María García, among others, contest the official Puerto Rican cultural nationalist discourse on …

Does Corticosterone Regulate The Onset Of Breeding In Free-Living Birds?: The Cort-Flexibility Hypothesis And Six Potential Mechanisms For Priming Corticosteroid Function, Christine R. Lattin, Creagh W. Breuner, L. Michael Romero Feb 2016

Does Corticosterone Regulate The Onset Of Breeding In Free-Living Birds?: The Cort-Flexibility Hypothesis And Six Potential Mechanisms For Priming Corticosteroid Function, Christine R. Lattin, Creagh W. Breuner, L. Michael Romero

Faculty Publications

© 2015 Published by Elsevier Inc. For many avian species, the decision to initiate breeding is based on information from a variety of environmental cues, including photoperiod, temperature, food availability, and social interactions. There is evidence that the hormone corticosterone may be involved in delaying the onset of breeding in cases where supplemental cues, such as low food availability and inclement weather, indicate that the environment is not suitable. However, not all studies have found the expected relationships between breeding delays and corticosterone titers. In this review, we present the hypothesis that corticosterone physiology mediates flexibility in breeding initiation (the …

Measurement Invariance Of The Brief Multidimensional Student’S Life Satisfaction Scale Among Adolescents And Emerging Adults Across 23 Cultural Contexts, Amina Abubakar, Et Al, Samantha Sim Feb 2016

Measurement Invariance Of The Brief Multidimensional Student’S Life Satisfaction Scale Among Adolescents And Emerging Adults Across 23 Cultural Contexts, Amina Abubakar, Et Al, Samantha Sim

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

There is hardly any cross-cultural research on the measurement invariance of the Brief Multidimensional Students’ Life Satisfaction Scales (BMSLSS). The current article evaluates the measurement invariance of the BMSLSS across cultural contexts. This cross-sectional study sampled 7,739 adolescents and emerging adults in 23 countries. A multi-group confirmatory factor analysis showed a good fit of configural and partial measurement weights invariance models, indicating similar patterns and strengths in factor loading for both adolescents and emerging adults across various countries. We found insufficient evidence for scalar invariance in both the adolescents’ and the emerging adults’ samples. A multi-level confirmatory factor analysis indicated …

Participative Decision Making And Employees Job Satisfaction: A Comparison Between Public And Private Pharmaceutical Companies In Egypt, Amal Saadeldeen Elsayed Ali Azab

Theses and Dissertations

The study investigated how does participative decision making affect employees' job satisfaction in a specific work setting (Public and private pharmaceutical companies in Egypt). A public pharmaceutical company was chosen as an example for public business sector companies in Egypt, and a comparison was made between the forms of management system applied in the public versus the private sampled companies. The study used in-depth semi- structured interviews with a total number of 32 employees and managers interviewed from the two companies. Results of the study highlighted a strong relation proving that applying participative decision making in the company increases employees’ …

Hydrodynamic Loading In Concomitance With Exogenous Cytokine Stimulation Modulates Differentiation Of Bovine Mesenchymal Stem Cells Towards Osteochondral Lineages, Stephen M. Goldman, Gilda A. Barabino Feb 2016

Hydrodynamic Loading In Concomitance With Exogenous Cytokine Stimulation Modulates Differentiation Of Bovine Mesenchymal Stem Cells Towards Osteochondral Lineages, Stephen M. Goldman, Gilda A. Barabino

Publications and Research

Background: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are viewed as a having significant potential for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine therapies. Clinical implementation of MSCs, however, demands that their preparation be stable and reproducible. Given that environmental and bioprocessing parameters such as substrate stiffness, seeding densities, culture medium composition, and mechanical loading can result in undirected differentiation of the MSC population, the objective of this study was to systematically investigate how hydrodynamic loading influences the differentiation of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) towards the osteochondral lineages both in the presence and absence of exogenous, inductive factors.

Methods: Expanded bovine MSCs were …

Animal Performance In Big-Time Vaudeville, Catherine M. Young Feb 2016

Animal Performance In Big-Time Vaudeville, Catherine M. Young

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Animal vaudevillians have been neglected by academic accounts of vaudeville. Drawing on the rapidly proliferating and highly interdisciplinary field of animal studies, this dissertation combines archival research and cultural theory to fill an important gap in our understanding of how animal bodies and images circulated during the vaudeville era. Taking up Nicole Shukin’s notion of animal capital as both animal “signs and substances” circulating in cultures of capital, I argue that vaudeville animal acts theatricalized animal capital for US citizen-consumers and often circulated animalized capital via racist ideologies and performance modes.

Theatre bookers balanced their reliance on animal acts …

Filología Reflexiva: Hacia Una Pedagogía “Evaluadora”. Reflexión Y Evaluación Del Campo Filológico Español (1936-1968), Jose Antonio Losada Montero

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This doctoral thesis offers an original and valuable contribution to the study of the genealogy of the literary canon between 1939 and 1968. During Francisco Franco´s dictatorship, Spanish Universities underwent a series of important changes in its academic and management configuration and in the way Spanish elites envisioned Higher Education inside the regime. This research focuses in the role that Spanish scholars, inside Hispanic and Modern Language Departments, played in this renegotiation of a new and crucial sociopolitical mission for College Education. By focusing on the period between 1939 and 1968, a moment of sociopolitical instability and conservative literary and …

City Poems And Urban Crisis, 1945 - Present, Jeffrey Nathan Mickelson Feb 2016

City Poems And Urban Crisis, 1945 - Present, Jeffrey Nathan Mickelson

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

City Poems proposes that twentieth-century American city poets hold important concerns, commitments, and strategies in common with urban theorists and city planners. The study situates canonical and lesser-read city poetry, including work by William Carlos Williams, Charles Olson, Allen Ginsberg, George Oppen, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Wanda Coleman, among others, in relation to discourses of urban crisis. Following Raymond Williams, Henri Lefebvre, and James Scully, it approaches city poetry as a form of social action that holds particular value for practitioners of progressive city planning. Because poetic representations of cities influence public perceptions, City Poems suggests, they have the potential to …

Refusal Strategies In L1 And L2 Among Undergraduate Egyptian Students, Alaa Kamel Darwish Feb 2016

Refusal Strategies In L1 And L2 Among Undergraduate Egyptian Students, Alaa Kamel Darwish

Theses and Dissertations

The current study investigated the refusal strategies realized by young adult Egyptian students in their L1 (Egyptian Arabic) and L2 (English). The study also explored the socio-pragmatic features of Egyptian refusals in terms of power and distance as well as the pragmatic transfer in the students’ L2 refusals. 2270 cases of refusal were collected by means of a Discourse Completion Task (DCT) and field notes. The sample consisted of 200 DCTs (collected from 100 students in L1 and L2) and 60 instances of refusals extracted from field notes collected by the researcher. The data were analyzed according to an adaptation …

Cerberus Amator: Underworld Imagery In The Elegies Of Tibullus And Propertius, Makaila Daeschel Feb 2016

Cerberus Amator: Underworld Imagery In The Elegies Of Tibullus And Propertius, Makaila Daeschel

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

In my thesis, I explore the mythological figure of Cerberus in the Elegies of Tibullus and Propertius. My objective is to bring to light the imaginative and provocative way that both of these poets employ the imagery and history of Cerberus and by so doing to illustrate the way in which both poets present Cerberus as a depiction of the poet lover. My thesis begins with an analysis of the representations of Cerberus, both literary and in pottery, and his mythological history. I follow with a chapter exploring Tibullus use of Cerberus as a stand-in for the elegiac poet-lover as …

Applied Literature: Expanding Cultural Understanding For Language Learners, Ahmed Sallam Feb 2016

Applied Literature: Expanding Cultural Understanding For Language Learners, Ahmed Sallam

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This study contributes to the empirical research on the use of literary texts in language learning. Specifically, it focuses on two groups of adult English language learners who are students at an American university as they read, write about, and discuss literature written by an author from the local area and which portrays the local culture in which the university is situated. This study seeks to examine how adopting an aesthetic stance can help foreign students, new to the university, evoke a wide range of responses and pay attention to language input and cultural context.

Socializing English-Speaking Navajo Children, Christine B. Vining Feb 2016

Socializing English-Speaking Navajo Children, Christine B. Vining

Special Education ETDs

Understanding how young children are socialized to the process and products of storytelling as part of everyday family life is important for language and literacy instruction. A language socialization framework was used to understand storytelling practices on the Navajo Nation. This study examined how three young English-speaking Navajo children, ages 3, 4 and 6, were socialized to tell stories. The broad research question that guided this work was, 'How are young English-speaking Navajo children socialized to tell stories?' The following methods were used: (a) observations of primary child participants, (b) interviews with adult family members of primary child participants, and …

The New Reflexivity: Puzzle Films, Found Footage, And Cinematic Narration In The Digital Age, Jordan Lavender-Smith Feb 2016

The New Reflexivity: Puzzle Films, Found Footage, And Cinematic Narration In The Digital Age, Jordan Lavender-Smith

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

“The New Reflexivity” tracks two narrative styles of contemporary Hollywood production that have yet to be studied in tandem: the puzzle film and the found footage horror film. In early August 1999, near the end of what D.N. Rodowick refers to as “the summer of digital paranoia,” two films entered the wide-release U.S. theatrical marketplace and enjoyed surprisingly massive financial success, just as news of the “death of film” circulated widely. Though each might typically be classified as belonging to the horror genre, both the unreliable “puzzle film” The Sixth Sense and the fake-documentary “found footage film” The Blair Witch …

Delusional Disorder: Treatment And The Restoration Of Adjudicative Competence, Martin Kassen Feb 2016

Delusional Disorder: Treatment And The Restoration Of Adjudicative Competence, Martin Kassen

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Delusional disorder has long been recognized in the psychiatric nomenclature, however, low prevalence rates and prevailing clinical views about the seemingly refractory nature of delusional disorder have restricted data on clinical treatment outcomes for this illness. Similar perspectives have been noted in forensic settings where minimal data is available to guide standards of care for incompetent to stand trial (IST) delusional pretrial defendants. Rationale. While the factors explicated in Sell provide guidelines for the involuntary medication of defendants found IST, numerous questions are left unanswered regarding the restorability of pretrial delusional detainees. The proposed study investigated the competency restoration rates …

Lucumi And The Children Of Cotton: Gender, Race, And Ethnicity In The Mapping Of A Black Atlantic Politics Of Religion, Akissi M. Britton Feb 2016

Lucumi And The Children Of Cotton: Gender, Race, And Ethnicity In The Mapping Of A Black Atlantic Politics Of Religion, Akissi M. Britton

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In this dissertation I have examined claims to religious authenticity, purity, legitimacy and authority through the lens of a Black and African American Orisa community in Brooklyn, New York. Through these claims, made both internally and to a broader Orisa community within the United States and throughout different locales in the Black Atlantic, I have articulated how they are more often than not linked to very non-religious aspects of social life. Members of this community, and the broader Orisa Atlantic of which they are a part, do not practice this tradition in a social, cultural, or political vacuum. In fact, …

Wandering In Contemporary Literature: A Narrative Theory Of Cognition, Hillel E. Broder Feb 2016

Wandering In Contemporary Literature: A Narrative Theory Of Cognition, Hillel E. Broder

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study offers a theory of wandering cognition as an animating feature of western literature, in general, and of contemporary literature, in particular. Unlike existing theories of peripatetic bodies and minds in fiction that focus primarily on political critiques, cultural practices, or pleasures of digression, this theory of wandering offers an aesthetic philosophy and ethical critique of representing cognition, memory, and narrative identity that finds affinities in the political, phenomenological, and ethical thought of Walter Benjamin, Emmanuel Levinas, and Giorgio Agamben.

Unlike existing cognitive theories of literature that apply cognitive theory to literary study (or vice versa), this study develops …

Ceasing To Run Underground: 20th-Century Women Writers And Hydro-Logical Thought, Annie M. Cranstoun Feb 2016

Ceasing To Run Underground: 20th-Century Women Writers And Hydro-Logical Thought, Annie M. Cranstoun

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Starting from two central ecopoetic convictions—the constitutive role of environment in human experience (and vice versa), and text’s ability to connect with the world—this dissertation then moves in a different direction from most ecocritical projects. Instead of looking at the ways literary representation flows back into nature in the forms of attitude, praxis, and policy, this study focuses on the earlier part of the loop: the emergence of text from environment, particularly its aquatic parts, via the faculty of the imagination. In its scrutiny of images that spring directly from matter and its faith in the concept of a personal …

Korupsi Demokratis Dalam Partai Politik:Studi Kasus Penyelenggaraan Pemilukada Lampung, Muhammad Aqil Irham Jan 2016

Korupsi Demokratis Dalam Partai Politik:Studi Kasus Penyelenggaraan Pemilukada Lampung, Muhammad Aqil Irham

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

After 1998 Reformation, Indonesia has been experiencing democratization and decentralization. Among others, general election for local government (pemilukada) since 2005 is an implementation of democratization and decentralization. Although democratization in Indonesia was praised by some researchers, many others also figured out some corruptive actions in the democratic process. Warren’s conception about democratic corruption helped us to understand the paradox of post-Reformation democratization and decentralization. According to Warren, corruption in a democracy is a duplicitous exclusion that gives an advantage to few parties in the expense of the others who are excluded from the process of decision-making and collective action. However, …
