Diffuse ionized gas (DIG) is prevalent in star-forming galaxies. Using a sample of 365 nearly face-on star-forming galaxies observed by Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO, we demonstrate how DIG in star-forming galaxies impacts the measurements of emission-line ratios, hence the interpretation of diagnostic diagrams and gas-phase metallicity measurements. At fixed metallicity, DIG-dominated low ΣHα regions display enhanced [S II]/Hα, [N II]/Hα, [O II]/Hβ and [O I]/Hα. The gradients in these line ratios are determined by metallicity gradients and ΣHα. In line ratio diagnostic diagrams, contamination by DIG moves H II …

Liver Enzymes And Risk Of Ischemic Heart Disease And Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Mendelian Randomization Study, Junxi Liu, Shiu Lun Au Yeung, Gabriel M. Leung, C. Mary Schooling
Publications and Research
We used Mendelian randomization to estimate the causal effects of the liver enzymes, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and gamma glutamyltransferase (GGT), on diabetes and cardiovascular disease, using genetic variants predicting these liver enzymes at genome wide significance applied to extensively genotyped case-control studies of diabetes (DIAGRAM) and coronary artery disease (CAD)/myocardial infarction (MI) (CARDIoGRAMplusC4D 1000 Genomes). Genetically higher ALT was associated with higher risk of diabetes, odds ratio (OR) 2.99 per 100% change in concentration (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.62 to 5.52) but ALP OR 0.92 (95% CI 0.71 to 1.19) and GGT OR 0.88 (95% CI 0.75 …

Elementary Students’ And Teachers’ Perceptions Of Flipped Mathematics Lessons, Susan Grace Edwards Mosher
All Theses And Dissertations
Flipped learning is a pedagogical model that allows more time for students to engage in active learning in the classroom because direct instruction is moved to video and watched outside of class time. Although many studies have shown the effectiveness of this strategy, previous perceptional studies have primarily focused on flipped learning through the lens of high school students and adult learners. This study was designed to explore elementary students’ and teachers’ perceptions of flipped learning in mathematics. A descriptive qualitative case study was conducted in a suburban elementary school in North Carolina. Three fifth grade teachers and fifteen of …

Comparative Genetic Screens In Human Cells Reveal New Regulatory Mechanisms In Wnt Signaling, Andres M. Lebensohn, Ramin Dubey, Leif Neitzel, Ofelia Tacchelly-Benites
Dartmouth Scholarship
The comprehensive understanding of cellular signaling pathways remains a challenge due to multiple layers of regulation that may become evident only when the pathway is probed at different levels or critical nodes are eliminated. To discover regulatory mechanisms in canonical WNT signaling, we conducted a systematic forward genetic analysis through reporter-based screens in haploid human cells. Comparison of screens for negative, attenuating and positive regulators of WNT signaling, mediators of R-spondin-dependent signaling and suppressors of constitutive signaling induced by loss of the tumor suppressor adenomatous polyposis coli or casein kinase 1α uncovered new regulatory features at most levels of the …

Proposal For A Practical Implementation Of Maslowian Portfolio Theory, Philippe De Brouwer
Proposal For A Practical Implementation Of Maslowian Portfolio Theory, Philippe De Brouwer
European Management Studies
For many centuries, investing in financial markets was only for the very rich. However, since the Second World War it has become both possible and necessary for larger parts of the population to make investment decisions. “Possible,” because wealth became more equally distributed and “necessary,” because of the increase in life expectancy and the need to provide an (extra) income during retirement. In Europe it was MiFID I while in the United States it was FINRA Rule 2111 that gave direction to financial advisers. In their individual ways, both regulations state that they expect good care on the part of …

Applying Text Mining To Analyze The Performance Of Pbos On The Basis Of Their Obligatory Annual Activity Statements, Tomasz Dyczkowski
European Management Studies
The paper’s aims is to investigate if the level of detail and selection of particular performance-related information by public benefit organizations (PBOs) in their obligatory annual activity statements can stimulate individual donations. The research encompassed 177 randomly selected Polish PBOs. It applied text mining methodologies and a laboratory experiment. The results obtained allowed the identification of nine key groups of topics that PBOs focus on the narrative parts of their obligatory annual activity statements. Moreover, it was proven that organizations that potential donors would like to support with their 1% tax write-off discuss their performance in more detail and focus …

It has long been recognized in the design of micromirror-based optical systems that balancing static flatness of the mirror surface through structural design with the system’s mechanical dynamic response is challenging. Although a variety of mass reduction approaches have been presented in the literature to address this performance trade, there has been little quantifiable comparison reported. In this work, different mass reduction approaches, some unique to the work, are quantifiably compared with solid plate thinning in both curvature and mass using commercial finite element simulation of a specific square silicon-on-insulator–based micromirror geometry. Other important considerations for micromirror surfaces, including surface …

Using Catchment Modeling Framework For Modeling Of Water And Pesticide Fate At Hillslope Scale, K. Djabelkhir, P. Kratt, C. Lauvernet, N. Carluer
Open Water Journal
Control and reduction of water contamination by pesticides are major issues for the protection of aquatic ecosystems. In order to better understand and formalize the main pathways of pesticides transport, the Catchment Modeling Framework (Kraft et al., 2011) has been chosen, which is an open source hydrological framework providing a spatial distribution with an object-oriented approach. Modularity characteristic of CMF, allows users given a modular design to our landscape, and to choose equations describing flux connection between hydrological response units either in surface and subsurface, and to add new modules and functions.
The aim of this study is to better …

For the monitoring of hydrometeorological variables, and more generally, for decision support systems, the instrumental in-situ measurement is crucial.
Referring to professional micrometeorological stations, there is a problem represented by the high costs of measures.
The high cost can be substantially related to the quality of the materials, to the array of industrial production processes and to the costs of skilled workers, needed for the installation and for the maintenance of the equipment.
A further problem in the development of such measuring networks is represented by "closed" products which, for structural layouts, data management and communications, are almost always referred …

Remote telemetry has a long history at the USGS and other hydrologic monitoring organizations, enabling real-time hydrologic data presentation on the Web. Citizen volunteers have also long contributed to hydrologic data–Wisconsin’s USGS and Wisconsin State Geological and Natural History Survey (WGNHS) groundwater network has nearly 100 volunteers participating. Ubiquitous short message service (SMS) messaging and email-capable mobile phones mean nearly everyone can provide telemetric data if they know what information to provide and the infrastructure to accept the information exists: this is “crowdsourcing.”

International Conference on Marketing
WhatsApp is the number one smartphone application in Malaysia. With its enormous user base, WhatsApp is a platform with considerable potential for viral marketing, which is a form of electronic word-of-mouth. Past literature indicates that the success of viral marketing greatly depends on a user’s decision to forward viral content, with the user’s intention being the key factor leading up to it. Although different models have been proposed in electronic word-of-mouth viral marketing behaviour, these platforms do not work entirely the same way as WhatsApp, which is a mobile instant messaging application. In addition, the factors affecting the user’s participation …

Using Creativity From Art And Engineering To Engage Students In Science, Mason Albert Kuhn, Scott Greenhalgh, Mark Mcdermott
Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions
STEAM education, referring to integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics, is a contemporary buzzword that is popular in many schools. In particular, many elementary school teachers who have been tasked to incorporate STEM teaching, because of the requirements of the Next Generation Science Standards, attempt to apply the arts in their science curriculum because they feel more comfortable using instructional approaches that incorporate creative activities such as crafts, drawing, and model construction than the core practices of STEM disciplines. Teachers can use the creative arts activities in two ways to enhance the STEM learning environment: 1) Using creative processes …
