Deciding When To Step In And When To Back Off: Culturally Mediated Writing Instruction For Adolescent English Learners, Leslie Patterson, Carol Wickstrom, Jennifer Roberts, Juan Araujo, Chieko Hoki

TAPESTRY

Culturally Mediated Writing Instruction invites students to take an inquiry stance toward issues of interest and significance—exploring issues, framing questions, gathering information, synthesizing findings into messages, publishing or presenting their findings, and assessing their efforts before moving on to other inquiries. CMWI can be seen as a rich and dynamic landscape of literacy tasks, routines, practices, materials, and dialogues that invites students to ask questions and to look for answers to those questions. Data from four high-school classrooms illustrate that CMWI teachers made interdependent and layered instructional decisions in response to students' needs, and that they provided mediation toward for …

Disrupting Poverty: The Impact of Academic Optimism and Organizational Citizenship Behaviors on Student Achievement in California High-Poverty Secondary Charter Schools

by Derek King

One of the byproducts of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was the commissioning of a study by the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare to better understand the disposition of the nation’s educational system. By 1966, the most comprehensive educational study to date was completed, the Equality of Educational Opportunity (Coleman et al., 1966). The findings shocked the nation by concluding that familial poverty restricted a student’s academic achievement, rendering all school-based interventions …

Auditory Fatigue Model Applications To Predict Noise Induced Hearing Loss In Human And Chinchilla, Pengfei Sun, Daniel Fox, Kathleen Campbell, Jun Qin Dec 2016

Auditory Fatigue Model Applications To Predict Noise Induced Hearing Loss In Human And Chinchilla, Pengfei Sun, Daniel Fox, Kathleen Campbell, Jun Qin

Articles

Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) remains a severe health problem worldwide. Current noise metrics and models have assessment limitations on gradually developing NIHL (GDNIHL). In this study, we apply a complex velocity level (CVL) auditory fatigue model to quantitatively assess the impact of basilar membrane (BM) movement on GDNIHL. The transfer functions of chinchilla and human auditory systems, including the triple-path nonlinear (TRNL) filters to simulate the inner ear responses, are applied to obtain BM velocity distribution. Chinchilla and human experimental hearing loss data are used to validate the proposed CVL model’s effectiveness. The results reveal that the developed CVL …

Theory On Meaningful Retirement Through Volunteerism: An Application Among The Elderly, Johnny Yao Jr. Dec 2016

Theory On Meaningful Retirement Through Volunteerism: An Application Among The Elderly, Johnny Yao Jr.

CNU Journal of Higher Education

Retirement is a phase in an individual’s life wherein there is withdrawal from employment and for most of the elderly, regular remuneration ceases. In spite of this, there is a growing number of retirees who continues to render work through volunteering even after retirement. This correlational study enlisted a multi-stage and purposive sample of 102 volunteer retirees in Cebu City. A 5-part instrument package was utilized to (1) describe the respondents’ demographic characteristics and (2) the nature of their volunteer work. Their reported (3) psychological well-being, (4) life satisfaction and (5) physical health were also determined using the Ryff Scales …

Equivalent Representations Of Non-Exponential Discounting Models, James A. Feigenbaum Dec 2016

Equivalent Representations Of Non-Exponential Discounting Models, James A. Feigenbaum

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

I characterize the entire class of consumption rules for finite-horizon models in which consumption is proportional to lifetime wealth. Any such rule can be obtained from a preference model with CRRA period utility. In a steady state with constant interest rates, a proportional consumption rule can be derived from a model with time-consistent preferences or from a model with possibly time-inconsistent preferences in which a household continually reoptimizes future utility discounted relative to the present instant. These two preference models will only coincide for the special case when the discount function is exponential. More generally, there will be two distinct …

Federal Involvement In Education Policy: An Analysis Of Race To The Top, Angela L. Early Dec 2016

Federal Involvement In Education Policy: An Analysis Of Race To The Top, Angela L. Early

Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to trace federal involvement in public K-12 education policy and to determine its effectiveness. Specifically, I present a historical analysis of federal education policy leading to the passage of Race to the Top (RTTT) in 2009. My goal is to show that, although the federal government has grown more involved in education policy, especially from the late 1980s (following the 1983 publication of A Nation At Risk that showed the failings of the nation’s schools) until present, actually students in the K-12 public education system have not progressed as the federal government had hoped. …

Principled Organizational Dissent In State Universities And Colleges In Metro Cebu, Jiolito Benitez Dec 2016

Principled Organizational Dissent In State Universities And Colleges In Metro Cebu, Jiolito Benitez

CNU Journal of Higher Education

State Universities and Colleges are offices of public trust. These are institutions in which accountability and transparency are indispensable and thus conscientious and principled dissent is a matter of duty. This study inquired into the instances of Principled Organizational Dissent (POD) in State Universities and Colleges (SUC) in Metro Cebu and the perception of POD among the said SUC employees. As evidenced by the cases and complaints filed before the Office of the Ombudsman Visayas, the Civil Service Commission, Region VII, and respective SUCs, SUC employees do engage in POD. The study revealed that most SUC employees –administrators and non-administrators …

The Quantum Biology Of Reactive Oxygen Species Partitioning Impacts Cellular Bioenergetics, Robert J. Usselman, Cristina Chavarriaga, Pablo R. Castello, Maria Procopio, Thorsten Ritz, Edward A. Dratz, David John Singel, Carlos F. Martino Dec 2016

The Quantum Biology Of Reactive Oxygen Species Partitioning Impacts Cellular Bioenergetics, Robert J. Usselman, Cristina Chavarriaga, Pablo R. Castello, Maria Procopio, Thorsten Ritz, Edward A. Dratz, David John Singel, Carlos F. Martino

Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Faculty Publications

Quantum biology is the study of quantum effects on biochemical mechanisms and biological function. We show that the biological production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in live cells can be influenced by coherent electron spin dynamics, providing a new example of quantum biology in cellular regulation. ROS partitioning appears to be mediated during the activation of molecular oxygen (O2) by reduced flavoenzymes, forming spin-correlated radical pairs (RPs). We find that oscillating magnetic fields at Zeeman resonance alter relative yields of cellular superoxide (O2•−) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) ROS products, indicating coherent singlet-triplet mixing at the point of ROS formation. Furthermore, …

Regular Expressions In Practice, Kathryn Lybarger Dec 2016

Regular Expressions In Practice, Kathryn Lybarger

Library Presentations

Regular expressions are not just for programmers anymore; they are supported by common software and systems used for cataloging and metadata, and allow for very powerful search and replace, even complete reformatting of library data! In this webinar, we’ll discuss the building blocks of regular expressions, practice identifying what they match (and do not match!), and consider how we can use them to make everyday library work more efficient.

A Bounded Affinity Theory Of Religion And The Paranormal, Joseph O. Baker, Christoper Bader, F. Carson Mencken Dec 2016

A Bounded Affinity Theory Of Religion And The Paranormal, Joseph O. Baker, Christoper Bader, F. Carson Mencken

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

We outline a theory of bounded affinity between religious experiences and beliefs and paranormalism, which emphasizes that religious and paranormal experiences and beliefs share inherent physiological, psychological, and ontological similarities. Despite these parallels, organized religious groups typically delineate a narrow subset of experiences and explanatory frames as acceptable and True, banishing others as either false or demonic. Accordingly, the theory provides a revised definition of the “paranormal” as beliefs and experiences explicitly rejected by science and organized religions. To demonstrate the utility of the theory, we show that, after controlling for levels of conventional religious practice, there is a strong, …

Effects Of Temperature On Transcriptome And Cuticular Hydrocarbon Expression In Ecologically Differentiated Populations Of Desert Drosophila, William J. Etges, Cassia De Oliveira, Sub Hash Rajpurohit, Allen G. Gibbs

Life Sciences Faculty Research

We assessed the effects of temperature differences on gene expression using whole-transcriptome microarrays and cuticular hydrocarbon variation in populations of cactophilic Drosophila mojavensis. Four populations from Baja California and mainland Mexico and Arizona were each reared on two different host cacti, reared to sexual maturity on laboratory media, and adults were exposed for 12 hr to 15, 25, or 35°C. Temperature differences influenced the expression of 3,294 genes, while population differences and host plants affected >2,400 each in adult flies. Enriched, functionally related groups of genes whose expression changed at high temperatures included heat response genes, as well as genes …
