Determining Gas Contents Of Magmas That Produce Submarine Basaltic Balloons Eruptions: Foerstner 1891 And Socorro 1993, Jacob Balcanoff

Open Access Master's Theses

Submarine eruptions that produce basaltic balloons are an uncommon eruption style only observed in five cases during historical times. Two well-studied examples occurred at Foerstner volcano in 1891 (Pantelleria, Italy) and at Socorro island, Mexico in 1993. Magmas erupted during these events were crystal-poor, alkali-rich trachybasalts to basanites. Pre-eruption gas contents (CO2 and H2O) have been determined using Fournier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis of melt inclusions in olivine and plagioclase phenocrysts. Both eruptions were found to be enriched in carbon dioxide and water relative to other ocean island basaltic compositions. Foerstner inclusions contain 0.17 wt.% to …

Development And Testing Of A Pressure Sensor Integrated Foil, Alexander Robert Stott

Open Access Master's Theses

Autonomous underwater vehicles are becoming increasingly more prevalent in exploring and studying the bodies of water found all over the world. Having a way to detect and identify the surrounding environment in close range would allow vehicles to move more efficiently and safely through hazardous environments or in groups of many. This study took biological inspiration from the fish sensory organ known as the lateral line to design, fabricate, and test a pressure sensor integrated foil. It examined the ability of pressure sensors to detect flow structures as well as variation in flow structures during a dynamic, flapping foil sinusoidal …

The Liquidity Crisis, Investor Sentiment, And Reit Returns And Volatility, Daniel Huerta, Peter V. Egly, Diego Escobari Jan 2016

The Liquidity Crisis, Investor Sentiment, And Reit Returns And Volatility, Daniel Huerta, Peter V. Egly, Diego Escobari

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

The real estate investment trust (REIT) industry experienced a liquidity crisis resulting from reduced access to credit commitments as banks were restoring their balance sheets during the 2007–2009 financial crisis. Employing generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH) models, we examine the impact of the liquidity crisis and investor sentiment on REIT returns and volatility over the December 2001 to February 2013 period. We find that the liquidity crisis negatively impacts REIT returns and helps explain increases in volatility; this finding is robust to multiple specifications. We show that investor sentiment is a significant factor in the REIT return-generating process with institutional …

How The Creation Of Appellate Courts In England And The United States Limited Judicial Comment On Evidence To The Jury, Renée Lettow Lerner Jan 2016

How The Creation Of Appellate Courts In England And The United States Limited Judicial Comment On Evidence To The Jury, Renée Lettow Lerner

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The practice of judicial comment on the evidence has traditionally been the main form of jury control. Previous scholarly work has focused on the loss of the power in state courts, and has attributed the decline of judicial comment to a strict separation of functions between judge and jury and to regional differences in legal culture. This article examines two jurisdictions in which the power of comment long remained strong, at least in theory: the High Court of England, with its predecessors, and the federal courts in the United States. In both jurisdictions, judicial power to comment has been limited …

Following the substantive harmonization in Regulation (EC) no. 1/2003, the European Commission has started more recently to focus on the harmonization of procedure and sanctions, and in January 2016, the European Parliament called for penalties against natural persons. This special issue looks at the current state of individual sanctions on the EU Member State level, examines from a comparative perspective the institutional challenges which these individual sanctions present, especially for leniency programmes, and discusses the pros and cons of introducing further individual, in particular criminal sanctions in Europe. It examines the experience with criminal sanctions in France, Germany, the United …

Explaining Variations In Bailout Policies: A Review Of Cornelia Woll's The Power Of Inaction, Arthur E. Wilmarth Jr., Kelsey M. Barnes

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In The Power of Inaction: Bank Bailouts in Comparison (Cornell Univ. Press, 2014), Professor Cornelia Woll asks a question of fundamental importance: "What was the nature of power [that] finance wielded over the fate of the economy and the crisis management in 2008, which affected the lives of so many?" To measure the effective power that the financial industry wielded during the crisis, Woll compares the terms of bailout programs that governments adopted in six countries. She contends that financial institutions were more likely to receive larger amounts of public support, and to make minimal contributions to rescue plans, in …

Berkshire's Blemishes: Lessons For Buffett's Successors, Peers, And Policy, Lawrence A. Cunningham Jan 2016

Berkshire's Blemishes: Lessons For Buffett's Successors, Peers, And Policy, Lawrence A. Cunningham

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Berkshire Hathaway’s unique managerial model is lauded for its great value; this article highlights its costs. Most costs stem from the same features that yield such great value, which boil down, ironically, to Berkshire trying to be something it isn’t: it is a massive industrial conglomerate run as an old-fashioned investment partnership. An advisory board gives unchecked power to a single manager (Warren Buffett); Buffett makes huge capital allocations and pivotal executive hiring-and-firing decisions with modest investigation and scant oversight; Berkshire’s autonomous and decentralized structure grants operating managers enormous discretion with limited second-guessing; its trust-based culture relies on a cultivated …

Just The Facts Ma’Am": How Military Appellate Courts Rely On Factual Sufficiency Review To Overturn Sexual Assault Cases When Victims Are "Incapacitated", Lisa M. Schenck

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This article contends that since sufficient protections are now in place in the military justice system, the military courts of criminal appeals no longer require factual sufficiency review authority to protect an accused tried by courts-martial, and furthermore, military criminal courts of appeals should have the same standard of review as other federal criminal courts, that is, a conviction should be tested for legal sufficiency.

Federal Rule of Evidence 801(d)(1)(B) has long provided that prior statements consistent with the testimony of a witness who is subject to cross-examination may be introduced and used as substantive evidence when offered “to rebut an express or implied charge that the declarant recently fabricated it or acted from a recent improper influence or motive in so testifying.” At the end of 2014, the rule was amended also to allow prior consistent statements to be introduced as substantive evidence when offered “to rehabilitate the declarant’s credibility as a witness when attacked on another ground.”

Technological Innovation, Data Analytics, And Environmental Enforcement, Robert L. Glicksman Jan 2016

Technological Innovation, Data Analytics, And Environmental Enforcement, Robert L. Glicksman

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Technical innovation is ubiquitous in contemporary society and contributes to its extraordinarily dynamic character. Sometimes these innovations have significant effects on the state of the environment or on human health and they have stimulated efforts to develop second order technologies to ameliorate those effects. The development of the automobile and its impact on life in the United States and throughout the world is an example. The story of modern environmental regulation more generally includes chapters filled with examples of similar efforts to respond to an enormous array of technological advances.

This Article uses a different lens to consider the role …

Regulation And The Courts: Judicial Review In Comparative Perspective, Francesca Bignami Jan 2016

Regulation And The Courts: Judicial Review In Comparative Perspective, Francesca Bignami

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

After a historical survey of the literature, this chapter puts forward a new analytical scheme to capture variation in comparative judicial review. The earliest, and still relevant, classification developed in the scholarly literature turns on the difference between judicial review of administrative action by the ordinary courts in the English common law and by a special body (Conseil d’Etat) connected to the executive branch in the French droit administratif. This is followed chronologically by the contrast that has been drawn by Robert Kagan and public-choice scholars between the litigious and formal American system of law and public policy and the …

Towards A Law Of Coworkers, Naomi Schoenbaum Jan 2016

Towards A Law Of Coworkers, Naomi Schoenbaum

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

A growing body of research reveals what most Americans already know from experience: that our coworkers play a central role in our lives. The significance of coworker relationships is only magnified in an era of expanding work hours in the twenty-four-seven economy. But the law does not reflect this reality, and instead relegates coworkers to the status of legal strangers. This Article argues that the law’s failure to recognize coworker relationships undermines not only these relationships, but also the goals of work law, and makes the case for a law of coworker relationships that would promote the equal, fair, and …

Gender And The Sharing Economy, Naomi Schoenbaum Jan 2016

Gender And The Sharing Economy, Naomi Schoenbaum

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

While the sharing economy has been celebrated as a flexible alternative to traditional employment for those with family responsibilities, especially women, it presents challenges for gender equality. Many of the services that are “shared” take place in the context of intimacy, which can have substantial consequences for transacting, particularly by enhancing the importance of identity of both the worker and the customer. Expanding on previous research on intimate work — a critical area that exists largely in limbo between the law of the market and the law of the family — this Article, written for the Cooper-Walsh Colloquium, explores the …

Photocopies, Patents, And Knowledge Transfer: 'The Uneasy Case' Of Justice Breyer's Patentable Subject Matter Jurisprudence, Dmitry Karshtedt Jan 2016

Photocopies, Patents, And Knowledge Transfer: 'The Uneasy Case' Of Justice Breyer's Patentable Subject Matter Jurisprudence, Dmitry Karshtedt

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

One aspect of Justice Stephen Breyer’s discomfort with patents, as expressed in his opinion for the Supreme Court in Mayo v. Prometheus and his dissent from the order dismissing certiorari in LabCorp v. Metabolite, is strikingly similar to one of his critiques of copyright law in The Uneasy Case for Copyright, a well-known article he wrote as Professor Breyer more than forty-five years ago. In The Uneasy Case, Breyer argued that the burdens on duplication of technical articles imposed by copyright law restrict the flow of information and prevent scientists from enjoying spillover benefits of published research. His patent opinions …

Assessment Of Competitive Requirements, Repeated Sprint Paddle Ability And Trainability Of Paddling Performance In Surfers, Oliver Farley Jan 2016

Assessment Of Competitive Requirements, Repeated Sprint Paddle Ability And Trainability Of Paddling Performance In Surfers, Oliver Farley

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Studies examining the physical demands of surfing, the physiological characteristics of surfers, training techniques and various indices important to surfing performance are limited and characterised by methodological discrepancies. This thesis consists of five studies to assess the competitive requirements, test specific repeat sprint fitness and the trainability of sprint paddling in surfers.

Initially an understanding of surfing movement patterns and a determination of the reliability and validity of custom-made GPS units was established (SurfTraX, Gold Coast, Australia) (Study 1: The validity and inter-unit reliability of custom-made SurfTraX GPS units and use during surfing). Durations, intensities, external loads and velocity …

Measuring The Quality And Identifying Influencing Factors Of Sustainability Reporting: Evidence From The Resources Industry In Australia, Siew Hoon Ong Jan 2016

Measuring The Quality And Identifying Influencing Factors Of Sustainability Reporting: Evidence From The Resources Industry In Australia, Siew Hoon Ong

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The lack of a standardised reporting framework in sustainability reporting has resulted in companies producing unaudited generic sustainability information that are not reflective of companies’ actual sustainability performance. The disclosures also differ in quality and hinder comparison. This study addresses these problems with the development of a new scoring index that integrates the hard and soft principles in Clarkson, Li, Richardson and Vasvari’s (2008) environmental index with performance indicators of the Global Reporting Initiatives (GRI) framework. The newly developed index comprises all three aspects of sustainability (economic, environmental and social) and adopts a standardised scoring scale that is reflective of …

Shrinkage Estimation Of Dynamic Panel Data Models With Interactive Fixed Effects, Xun Lu, Liangjun Su Jan 2016

Shrinkage Estimation Of Dynamic Panel Data Models With Interactive Fixed Effects, Xun Lu, Liangjun Su

Research Collection School Of Economics

We consider the problem of determining the number of factors and selecting the proper regressors in linear dynamic panel data models with interactive fixed effects. Based on the preliminary estimates of the slope parameters and factors a la Bai (2009) and Moon and Weidner (2015), we propose a method for simultaneous selection of regressors and factors and estimation through the method of adaptive group Lasso (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator). We show that with probability approaching one, our method can correctly select all relevant regressors and factors and shrink the coefficients of irrelevant regressors and redundant factors to zero. …

Hot Property In New Zealand: Empirical Evidence Of Housing Bubbles In The Metropolitan Centres, Ryan Greenaway-Mcgrevy, Peter C. B. Phillips Jan 2016

Hot Property In New Zealand: Empirical Evidence Of Housing Bubbles In The Metropolitan Centres, Ryan Greenaway-Mcgrevy, Peter C. B. Phillips

Research Collection School Of Economics

Using recently developed statistical methods for testing and dating exuberant behaviour in asset prices we document evidence of episodic bubbles in the New Zealand property market over the past two decades. The results show clear evidence of a broad-based New Zealand housing bubble that began in 2003 and collapsed over mid-2007 to early 2008 with the onset of the worldwide recession and the financial crisis. New methods of analysing market contagion are also developed and are used to examine spillovers from the Auckland property market to the other metropolitan centres. Evidence from the latest data reveals that the greater Auckland …

Semiparametric Estimation Of Partially Linear Dynamic Panel Data Models With Fixed Effects, Liangjun Su, Yonghui Zhang Jan 2016

Semiparametric Estimation Of Partially Linear Dynamic Panel Data Models With Fixed Effects, Liangjun Su, Yonghui Zhang

Research Collection School Of Economics

In this paper, we study a partially linear dynamic panel data model with fixed effects, where either exogenous or endogenous variables or both enter the linear part, and the lagged-dependent variable together with some other exogenous variables enter the nonparametric part. Two types of estimation methods are proposed for the first-differenced model. One is composed of a semiparametric GMM estimator for the finite-dimensional parameter θ and a local polynomial estimator for the infinite-dimensional parameter m based on the empirical solutions to Fredholm integral equations of the second kind, and the other is a sieve IV estimate of the parametric and …

Modified Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy For Correction Of Severe Anterior Open Bite: Technical Note And Case Report, Prasarn Tangarturonrasme, Laddawun Sununliganon Jan 2016

Modified Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy For Correction Of Severe Anterior Open Bite: Technical Note And Case Report, Prasarn Tangarturonrasme, Laddawun Sununliganon

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) is a common procedure used for the correction of mandibular anomalies. This procedure has been through various modifications that aims to increase skeletal stability and reduce possible complications. So far, the limitation of BSSO technique remains a concern in certain circumstances, such as skeletal relapse after closing of anterior open bite, especially in severe cases. Also, there is a risk of facial paralysis following a large amount of mandibular setback in a severe mandibular prognathism. Therefore, concomitant surgery such as segmented osteotomy and/or maxillary osteotomy may be used for correction of the deformity in order …

The Evolution And Development Of A Novel Trait In Sepsidae, Dacotah Melicher Jan 2016

The Evolution And Development Of A Novel Trait In Sepsidae, Dacotah Melicher

Biological Sciences

Evolutionary novelty, the appearance of new traits with no existing homology, is central to the adaptive radiation of new species. Novel traits inform our understanding of development and how developmental mechanisms can generate novelties. Sepsid flies (Diptera: Sepsidae) have a sexually dimorphic, jointed appendage used for courtship and mating. The appendage develops from the fourth abdominal histoblast nest rather than an imaginal disc. Histoblast nests in other species produce the adult epidermis and lack three-dimensional organization. The sepsid system is an opportunity to investigate the evolutionary history of a novel trait and the developmental mechanisms that pattern epidermal tissue into …

Evidence Of Climate Niche Creation In The Northern Great Plains: The History Of Invasion, Population Genetics, Competitive Effect, And Long-Term Trends Of Invasive Poa Pratensis L., Lauren Alexsandra Dennhardt Jan 2016

Evidence Of Climate Niche Creation In The Northern Great Plains: The History Of Invasion, Population Genetics, Competitive Effect, And Long-Term Trends Of Invasive Poa Pratensis L., Lauren Alexsandra Dennhardt

Biological Sciences

Understanding the mechanisms of invasion is critical in order to control an invasive species. Poa pratensis L. (Kentucky bluegrass) is an invasive species that has been present in the northern Great Plains (NGP) for over 100 years, but has become a dominant species in the mixed grass region recently. My dissertation seeks to answer one critical question—why has P. pratensis become such a successful invasive species in the NGP? I first asked if the invasion was caused by adaptation and/or propagule pressure. I screened the genetic fingerprint of invasive P. pratensis in the NGP along with measuring the genomic content …

Interactively Cutting And Constraining Vertices In Meshes Using Augmented Matrices, Yu-Hong Yeung, Jessica Crouch, Alex Pothen Jan 2016

Interactively Cutting And Constraining Vertices In Meshes Using Augmented Matrices, Yu-Hong Yeung, Jessica Crouch, Alex Pothen

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We present a finite-element solution method that is well suited for interactive simulations of cutting meshes in the regime of linear elastic models. Our approach features fast updates to the solution of the stiffness system of equations to account for real-time changes in mesh connectivity and boundary conditions. Updates are accomplished by augmenting the stiffness matrix to keep it consistent with changes to the underlying model, without refactoring the matrix at each step of cutting. The initial stiffness matrix and its Cholesky factors are used to implicitly form and solve a Schur complement system using an iterative solver. As changes …
