Phylogeography Of Oculina Corals And Their Algal Symbionts: Insights Into The Origin And Expansion Of Oculina Patagonica In The Mediterranean, Karine Eliane Posbic Leydet Jan 2016

Phylogeography Of Oculina Corals And Their Algal Symbionts: Insights Into The Origin And Expansion Of Oculina Patagonica In The Mediterranean, Karine Eliane Posbic Leydet

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In a world of rapidly changing environmental conditions, species must effectively respond to their changing habitat or risk extinction. The goal of my dissertation is to elucidate the origins and mechanisms underlying the recent successful population expansion of the invasive coral Oculina patagonica in the Mediterranean Sea. To do this, I have utilized nuclear markers and next-generation sequencing data for the coral host and its algal symbiont as well as environmental data. Although only recently first described from the waters of the Mediterranean, genetic, historical demographic, and fossil evidence suggests that O. patagonica has not been anthropogenically introduced from the …

Nationalisme Et Littérature Francophone Au Maroc: Genèse D'Une Littérature Indépendante, Nadia Miskowiec Jan 2016

Nationalisme Et Littérature Francophone Au Maroc: Genèse D'Une Littérature Indépendante, Nadia Miskowiec

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Morocco was under French protectorate between 1912 and 1956 when it gained its independence. This colonization left traces in literature, notably the beginnings of a Moroccan literature written in French. However, while written in French these works include specifically Moroccan features that reflect the diversity and complexity of that nation. I argue that the works written by Moroccan authors such as Abdellatif Laâbi, Mohammed Khaïr-Eddine, Mohammed Choukri, Mohammed Leftah, Ahmed Sefrioui and Tahar Ben Jelloun, post-independence, have significantly contributed to building a decolonized identity for Moroccans. By focusing on the literary tools deployed by these authors the research highlights aspects …

Retention Of Institutional Memory Via Knowledge Management: Perceptions Regarding The Effectiveness Of Corporate Approaches Applied In Higher Education, Sonya Yvette Marsh

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Research has shown that private industry has a better grasp on knowledge management concepts and practices than in the higher education arena. Given the internal and external challenges facing colleges and universities, the processes and systems associated with knowledge management could serve as a resource for performance improvement and greater levels of effectiveness and efficiency. This phenomenological study was conducted to determine the perceptions and perspectives of deans regarding the usefulness and value of implementing knowledge management best practices typically employed by organizations in the private sector. Four research questions guided this study: 1) What level of awareness exists of …

Impacts Of Rock-Brine Interactions On Petrophysical Properties Of A Sandstone Reservoir, Utilizing Geochemical And Pore Network Modeling, Masoud Safari-Zanjani Jan 2016

Impacts Of Rock-Brine Interactions On Petrophysical Properties Of A Sandstone Reservoir, Utilizing Geochemical And Pore Network Modeling, Masoud Safari-Zanjani

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Unfavorable consequences of geochemical reactions, such as calcite and silica scaling, in geothermal power plant surface facilities have been discussed in many recent studies. However, the impact of brine-rock interactions related to geothermal projects on reservoir properties has not been addressed fully. In this study, interactions between geothermal fluid and reservoir rocks in two fields located in Vermilion Parish, LA, and Chocolate Bayou, TX, are examined using geochemical modeling. The studied reservoir belongs to the Frio formation. In the geochemical models, the brine is cooled down to the estimated output temperature of a geothermal heat exchanger and re-equilibrated. Then, brine-rock …

Physical Modeling Of Graphene Nanoribbon Field Effect Transistor Using Non-Equilibrium Green Function Approach For Integrated Circuit Design, Yaser Mohammadi Banadaki Jan 2016

Physical Modeling Of Graphene Nanoribbon Field Effect Transistor Using Non-Equilibrium Green Function Approach For Integrated Circuit Design, Yaser Mohammadi Banadaki

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The driving engine for the exponential growth of digital information processing systems is scaling down the transistor dimensions. For decades, this has enhanced the device performance and density. However, the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS) states the end of Moore’s law in the next decade due to the scaling challenges of silicon-based CMOS electronics, e.g. extremely high power density. The forward-looking solutions are the utilization of emerging materials and devices for integrated circuits. The Ph.D. dissertation focuses on graphene, one atomic layer of carbon sheet, experimentally discovered in 2004. Since fabrication technology of emerging materials is still in early …

Theory And Utility Of The Three Isotope Fractionation Relationship, Justin Alan Hayles Jan 2016

Theory And Utility Of The Three Isotope Fractionation Relationship, Justin Alan Hayles

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The field of isotope geochemistry began with the study of oxygen isotope geothermometry, most famously for carbonates. Traditionally oxygen isotope studies are only concerned with the relationship between one rare isotope, oxygen-18, and the common isotope, oxygen-16. In these cases, the abundance of the third stable isotope, oxygen-17 is ignored because for almost all terrestrial processes the 17O-16O relationship roughly scales with the 18O-16O relationship through a fractionation processes and is thought to not provide any new information. However, the discovery of large “mass independent” isotope effects for ozone chemistry has driven a multitude of uses for triple isotope relationships. …

Garbage Collection For General Graphs, Hari Krishnan Jan 2016

Garbage Collection For General Graphs, Hari Krishnan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Garbage collection is moving from being a utility to a requirement of every modern programming language. With multi-core and distributed systems, most programs written recently are heavily multi-threaded and distributed. Distributed and multi-threaded programs are called concurrent programs. Manual memory management is cumbersome and difficult in concurrent programs. Concurrent programming is characterized by multiple independent processes/threads, communication between processes/threads, and uncertainty in the order of concurrent operations. The uncertainty in the order of operations makes manual memory management of concurrent programs difficult. A popular alternative to garbage collection in concurrent programs is to use smart pointers. Smart pointers can collect …

High-Resolution Correlation Using Geophysical And Geochemical Methods On Three Cambrian Drumian Marine Sedimentary Successions In The House Range Embayment, Western Laurentia, Emad I. Elfar

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) of the base of the Cambrian Drumian Stage was defined at 62 m above the base of the Wheeler formation, at the First Appearance Datum (FAD) of Ptychagnostus atavus (P. atavus), and at 10 meter below the DrumIan Carbon isotope Excursion (DICE) on the Stratotype Ridge in the Drum Mountains western Utah, (Babcock at al., 2004; 2007). Tracing the base of the the Drumian stage to other Middle Cambrian sequences in the House Range Embayment (HRE), a fault-controlled deep-water intrusion into an extensive carbonate platform along the passive margin of western Laurentia, …

Fear No Evil: Making Sense Of Intersectionality And Fear Of Crime Amongst Blacks In High Crime Neighborhoods, Melinda Jackson Jan 2016

Fear No Evil: Making Sense Of Intersectionality And Fear Of Crime Amongst Blacks In High Crime Neighborhoods, Melinda Jackson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The extant literature on fear of crime has relied almost entirely upon quantitative data and was criticized as atheoretical due to its focus on the demographic characteristics associated with vulnerability. Emerging qualitative research on fear of crime has begun to overcome this limitation by drawing upon an intersectional lens, but quantitative assessments have yet to fully incorporate this theoretical development. The current study addresses this limitation by analyzing qualitative data collected through semi-structured interviews and quantitative data collected as part of a large-scale survey. The primary goal of this dissertation is to take an intersectional approach to understand the relationships …

Direct Position Control Of Dielectric Barrier Discharge Filaments, Matthew C. Paliwoda, Joshua L. Rovey, Mitchell Wainwright Jan 2016

Direct Position Control Of Dielectric Barrier Discharge Filaments, Matthew C. Paliwoda, Joshua L. Rovey, Mitchell Wainwright

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Controllable patterns of plasma filaments are being explored for reconfigurable metamaterial applications. When operated in a filamentary mode, volume dielectric barrier discharges are known to produce patterns of self-organizing plasma filaments. In this work the presence and intensity of a single filament at a fixed location is controlled by an isolated and independently electrically adjusted needle electrode. Time-averaged normalized light intensity, current, and voltage are measured while varying the voltage of the needle through a self-biasing resistance. For a 7.5 kV, 3.2 kHz DBD, the needle-controlled filament discharges similar to adjacent filaments at low potentials but stops discharging at a …

Comparison Of Robust And Probabilistic Lmi-Based Design Of Adaptive Flight Controllers With Uncertain Input Dynamics, Mario Luca Fravolini, Tansel Yucelen, Benjamin Gruenwald, Merve Dogan, Marcello R. Napolitano Jan 2016

Comparison Of Robust And Probabilistic Lmi-Based Design Of Adaptive Flight Controllers With Uncertain Input Dynamics, Mario Luca Fravolini, Tansel Yucelen, Benjamin Gruenwald, Merve Dogan, Marcello R. Napolitano

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Adaptive control-based schemes have been implemented to date in a variety of different ap-plications. However, the ability to obtain a predictable transient closed-loop performance in adaptive systems is still a challenging problem from a verification and validation point of view. To face this problem we have recently introduced an analysis and design framework for adaptive control systems in the presence of bounded uncertainty and bounded adaptive control (the boundedness can be enforced, for instance, by a parameter projection mechanism) showing that the transitory performance of a MRAC system can be expressed, analyzed, and optimized via a convex optimization formulation based …

Friending The Privacy Regulators, William Mcgeveran Jan 2016

Friending The Privacy Regulators, William Mcgeveran

Articles

According to conventional wisdom, data privacy regulators in the European Union are unreasonably demanding, while their American counterparts are laughably lax. Many observers further assume that any privacy enforcement without monetary fines or other punishment is an ineffective “slap on the wrist.” This Article demonstrates that both of these assumptions are wrong. It uses the simultaneous 2011 investigation of Facebook’s privacy practices by regulators in the United States and Ireland as a case study. These two agencies reached broadly similar conclusions, and neither imposed a traditional penalty. Instead, they utilized “responsive regulation,” where the government emphasizes less adversarial techniques and …

Numerical Simulation Of Pile Installation And Following Setup Considering Soil Consolidation And Thixotropy, Firouz Rosti Jan 2016

Numerical Simulation Of Pile Installation And Following Setup Considering Soil Consolidation And Thixotropy, Firouz Rosti

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

During pile installation, the stresses and void ratios in the surrounding soils change significantly, creating large displacements, soil disturbance and the development of excess porewater pressures. The disturbed soils, especially fine grain soils, tend to regain their strength over time due to both the consolidation of the excess porewater pressure and thixotropic behavior of soil particles. In this research, the pile installation process and the subsequent consolidation, the thixotropy and load tests for several test piles were modeled using finite element (FE) model. A new elastoplastic constitutive model, which was developed based on the disturbed state concept (DSC) and critical …

Effects Of Various Seating Arrangements On Disruptive Classroom Behavior, Natalie Marie Robichaux Jan 2016

Effects Of Various Seating Arrangements On Disruptive Classroom Behavior, Natalie Marie Robichaux

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Both class-wide behavioral interventions and antecedent strategies are commonly used to target disruptive behavior problems and improve classroom management. Typically, antecedent strategies precede behavioral interventions due to their proactive nature. Antecedent strategies, such as altering the classroom seating arrangement, may be more desirable to teachers than behavior interventions due to their simplicity and ability to be easily incorporated into existing routines. Past research, though limited, has demonstrated that row and column seating arrangements are associated with lower disruptions during independent work activities compared to group seating arrangements. In the first study, a multi-element design was used to compare rates of …

Study Of Condensed Matter Systems With Monte Carlo Simulation On Heterogeneous Computing Systems, Sheng Feng Jan 2016

Study Of Condensed Matter Systems With Monte Carlo Simulation On Heterogeneous Computing Systems, Sheng Feng

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We study the Edwards-Anderson model on a simple cubic lattice with a finite constant external field. We employ an indicator composed of a ratio of susceptibilities at finite momenta, which was recently proposed to avoid the difficulties of a zero momentum quantity, for capturing the spin glass phase transition. Unfortunately, this new indicator is fairly noisy, so a large pool of samples at low temperature and small external field are needed to generate results with a sufficiently small statistical error for analysis. We thus implement the Monte Carlo method using graphics processing units to drastically speed up the simulation. We …

Growth Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons During The Supercritical Pyrolysis Of N-Decane, Subramanian Venkateswaran Kalpathy Jan 2016

Growth Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons During The Supercritical Pyrolysis Of N-Decane, Subramanian Venkateswaran Kalpathy

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In order to serve a dual role as a propellant and as a coolant, fuels in the pre-combustion environment of future high-speed aircraft will be exposed to temperatures and pressures of up to 700 °C and 130 atm—conditions that are supercritical for jet fuels. Under such conditions, fuel can undergo pyrolytic reactions leading to the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), which are precursors to fuel-line solid deposits that can hinder safe operation of the aircraft. Therefore, to prevent solid deposit formation, it is extremely important to understand the PAH formation pathways in the supercritical fuel pyrolysis environment. To better …

Intracontinental Neotectonics: Case Studies From The Tian Shan Orogen And Kuqa Fold-Thrust Belt, Cindy M. Colón Jan 2016

Intracontinental Neotectonics: Case Studies From The Tian Shan Orogen And Kuqa Fold-Thrust Belt, Cindy M. Colón

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the kinematic properties of intracontinental deformation during short geologic time scales. Using three case studies this work characterizes active deformation at varying spatial scales within the continental interior of Eurasia. The far-field effect of the Cenozoic Indo-Asia collision is the driving force controlling deformation within the Eurasian continental interior. Active deformation across the intracontinental Tian Shan range challenges the plate tectonic model that proposes crustal deformation is concentrated along plate boundaries. This work further constrains the active kinematics of intracontinental motion that is necessary to understand the dynamics of the Eurasian intracontinental system. The two standing …

Wrestling With Neptune: The Political Consequences Of The Military Inundations During The Dutch Revolt, Robert Tiegs Jan 2016

Wrestling With Neptune: The Political Consequences Of The Military Inundations During The Dutch Revolt, Robert Tiegs

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Over the course of several centuries during the High and Late Middle Ages the people of Holland developed a vast water-management infrastructure to protect themselves against flooding. Enormous sections of the province lay at or below sea-level, so it was only through constant diligence that they kept their lands dry. They found that the best way to maintain these flood defenses was through cooperation and consensus forming at the local and regional level. Those who would be affected an inundation were given a chance to participate in the decision-making process about how to prevent floods from occurring. These environmental influences …

Promoting Literacy Development In The Early Childhood Classroom: An Evaluation Of Phonemic Awareness And Phonics Instruction, Elise Catherine Mciver Jan 2016

Promoting Literacy Development In The Early Childhood Classroom: An Evaluation Of Phonemic Awareness And Phonics Instruction, Elise Catherine Mciver

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Research has consistently demonstrated that literacy skills are associated with a host of benefits that are both substantial and long lasting. Given the implications of reading skill development, efforts to understand the most effective methods of teaching students how to read are consequential. Fortunately, substantial research has been conducted on this topic and has subsequently highlighted two essential building blocks of a balanced literacy framework: phonemic awareness and phonics. The current literature on the reading acquisition process shows that if students are to benefit from phonics instruction, they must have a certain level of phonemic awareness proficiency. The question remains, …

The Effects Of Using Knee Wraps On Back Squat And Vertical Jump Performance., Cardyl Trionfante

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Using knee wraps (KW) as an ergogenic aid has been commonly practiced in various sports such as powerlifting, strongman, and Olympic weightlifting. There is limited research investigating the effects of using KW during back squat (BS) and none regarding vertical jump (VJ). This dissertation investigates the effects of wearing KW on BS and VJ performance through a series of studies. The first study was designed to observe acute and long term effects of using KW on VJ performance. VJ performance decreased when KW were worn and was not considered an ergogenic aid for VJ. The second study was designed to …

Development Of Functional Markers For Resistance To Leaf Scald In Sugarcane, Andres Felipe Gutierrez Viveros Jan 2016

Development Of Functional Markers For Resistance To Leaf Scald In Sugarcane, Andres Felipe Gutierrez Viveros

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Leaf scald, caused by Xanthomonas albilineans, is a major sugarcane disease worldwide. The disease is managed primarily with resistant cultivars obtained through classical breeding; however, the erratic symptom expression hinders the reliability and reproducibility of the selection process. The development of molecular markers associated with incompatible/compatible reaction can overcome this limitation. Suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) and quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping were the strategies used to find leaf scald resistance-associated genes and molecular markers in sugarcane. SSH results showed that genes involved in signal perception and transduction, and DNA binding, were highly expressed in the resistant clone LCP 85-384 compared …

Conjunctive Management Of Water Resources Under Climate Change Projection Uncertainty, Amir Mani Jan 2016

Conjunctive Management Of Water Resources Under Climate Change Projection Uncertainty, Amir Mani

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Goal of this study is to investigate the impacts of climate change projection uncertainty on conjunctive use of water resources. To pursue this goal first, a conjunctive-use model is developed for management of groundwater and surface water resources via mixed integer linear fractional programming (MILFP). The conjunctive management model maximizes the ratio of groundwater usage to reservoir water usage. A conditional head constraint is imposed to maintain groundwater sustainability. A transformation approach is introduced to transform the conditional head constraint into a set of mixed integer linear constraints in terms of groundwater head. A supply network is proposed to apply …

21st Century Transformational Leadership: The Neo-Stereotypical Phenomenon Of A Black Female Principal, Terri Valentine Wallis Jan 2016

21st Century Transformational Leadership: The Neo-Stereotypical Phenomenon Of A Black Female Principal, Terri Valentine Wallis

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the leadership perceptions of a Black female first year principal in a predominantly White private Christian school. For years, educational research and leadership models for school principals were theorized and constructed based on White men or those in the dominant group. This study is significant in that it sought to explore the perception of the leadership behaviors and dispositions of a Black female to determine if there was a correlation between the Transformational Leadership Theory and the emergent leadership style. In the qualitative tradition, this autoethnographic study used narrative inquiry to explore …

This project is primarily centered around bridging the connection between research of neurological disorders, mental health, and how they interact with the design world. The end product will be a new state mental hospital for North Dakota that aims to develop a built environment that helps people with debilitating mental disorders get onto the road of recovery and ultimately learn how to integrate themselves …

Effects Of Pitch And Rhythm Priming Tasks On Accuracy And Fluency During Sight-Reading, Christine Renee Russell Jan 2016

Effects Of Pitch And Rhythm Priming Tasks On Accuracy And Fluency During Sight-Reading, Christine Renee Russell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Given the prevalent use of sight-reading in the classroom, at music festivals, and in audition procedures, it is important to know the most effective practices in preparing students to sight-read musical excerpts. Previous studies suggest that rhythm accuracy is a significant indicator of sight-reading ability. However, others have observed a possible influence of pitch on the performance of rhythm. In an effort to better understand that relationship, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of pitch and rhythm priming tasks on sight-reading accuracy and fluency. High school wind instrumentalists (N=182) sight-read selected stimulus exercises from the Watkins-Farnum …

La Philosophie Poétique D'Édouard Glissant, Un Monisme Vitaliste, David Llorca Jan 2016

La Philosophie Poétique D'Édouard Glissant, Un Monisme Vitaliste, David Llorca

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Édouard Glissant (1928-2011) is a world famous poet and novelist from French Island Martinique who, following the footsteps of Aimé Césaire, tried to heal the traumatic disruption and resolve the identity crisis of Creole people after the abominations of slavery and colonization by poetic sublimation and engaged thoughts. How is Glissant a philosopher? How does he articu-late poetry and philosophy together? What does he understand by “Relation”, why is it central in his thought and how does the articulation of all his concepts around it make a philosophical en-semble? How original and cohesive is this ensemble? Also, as we know …

Building As Bridge: Re-Imagining Sustainable Living Through Symphonic Design, Emma Demartelaere Jan 2016

Building As Bridge: Re-Imagining Sustainable Living Through Symphonic Design, Emma Demartelaere

Architecture Theses

For German Philosopher, Martin Heidegger, a bridge is a manifestation of the fourfold—Earth, Sky, Divinities, and Mortals—which is at the root of all dwelling. He believed that preserving this fourfold is how we dwell in a holistic way on earth. This understanding of sustainable living requires human participation. Today, sustainable design has disregarded human participation with its specialized application, limiting our understanding of its relationship to the larger world. However, the task of architecture is not to reduce our understanding with the world, but rather to, like music, invite us into a space for interpretation; calling us to participate in …

A Direct Study Of 20ne(Alpha,P)23na With The Helical Orbit Spectrometer (Helios), Jianping Lai

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Type Ia Supernovae are thermonuclear explosions that occur on CO white dwarfs in binary systems, completely disrupting the system. While the exact progenitor of these events is unclear, there have been several studies exploring the nucleosynthesis that drives these stellar explosions. These studies have shown that a handful of reactions have a significant effect on Type Ia Supernova nucleosynthesis, specifically 12C(alpha, gamma), 12C+12C, 20Ne(alpha, p), 20Ne(alpha, gamma), and 30Si(p, gamma). While the 20Ne(alpha,p)23Na reaction has been shown to be one of the five most influential reactions, it has not been directly been measured at astrophysically relevant energies. We performed direct …

Why Enumeration Matters, Richard A. Primus Jan 2016

Why Enumeration Matters, Richard A. Primus

Michigan Law Review

The maxim that the federal government is a government of enumerated powers can be understood as a “continuity tender”: not a principle with practical consequences for governance, but a ritual statement with which practitioners identify themselves with a history from which they descend. This interpretation makes sense of the longstanding paradox whereby courts recite the enumeration principle but give it virtually no practical effect. On this understanding, the enumerated-powers maxim is analogous to the clause that Parliament still uses to open enacted statutes: “Be it enacted by the Queen’s most Excellent Majesty.” That text might imply that the Queen is …
