Additionally, the article comments on the expected changes to existing law in this field drafted at the EU level.
Literary Creolization In Layachi's A Life Full Of Holes, Maarten Van Gageldonk
Literary Creolization In Layachi's A Life Full Of Holes, Maarten Van Gageldonk
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Literary Creolization in Layachi's A Life Full of Holes" Maarten van Gageldonk discusses the publication of Larbi Layachi's 1964 book by Grove Press based on a transcription and translation by Paul Bowles. Both Bowles and the editors at Grove Press made numerous alterations to the content and form of Layachi's tales in order to make them more accessible for readers. In the process, Layachi's book became a "cultural creole" (Hannerz). Drawing on archival materials from the Grove Press Records housed at Syracuse University, van Gageldonk examines how in its published form A Life Full of Holes …
Politics Of Feminist Revision In Di Prima's Loba, Polina Mackay
Politics Of Feminist Revision In Di Prima's Loba, Polina Mackay
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Politics of Feminist Revision in di Prima's Loba" Polina Mackay explores Diane di Prima's two-volume epic Loba (1998) and, through a comparison of di Prima to the work of Adrienne Rich, argues that Loba practices a politics of feminist revision. Further, Mackay examines the ways in which di Prima starts to move away from the recovery project of female voices in patriarchal culture, associated with late twentieth-century Feminism, towards a women's literature which need not be defined entirely through its resistance to patriarchal narratives of gender in men's literature. Here it focuses on di Prima's revisionist …

Bloom Filters Optimized Wu-Manber For Intrusion Detection, Monther Aldwairi, Koloud Al-Khamaiseh, Fatima Alharbi, Babar Shah
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
With increasing number and severity of attacks, monitoring ingress and egress network traffic is becoming essential everyday task. Intrusion detection systems are the main tools for capturing and searching network traffic for potential harm. Signature-based intrusion detection systems are the most widely used, and they simply use a pattern matching algorithms to locate attack signatures in intercepted network traffic. Pattern matching algorithms are very expensive in terms of running time and memory usage, leaving intrusion detection systems unable to detect attacks in real-time. We propose a Bloom filters optimized Wu-Manber pattern matching algorithm to speed up intrusion detection. The Bloom …

A Survey Of Social Network Forensics, Umit Karabiyik, Muhammed Abdullah Canbaz, Ahmet Aksoy, Tayfun Tuna, Esra Akbas, Bilal Gonen, Ramazan S. Aygun
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Social networks in any form, specifically online social networks (OSNs), are becoming a part of our everyday life in this new millennium especially with the advanced and simple communication technologies through easily accessible devices such as smartphones and tablets. The data generated through the use of these technologies need to be analyzed for forensic purposes when criminal and terrorist activities are involved. In order to deal with the forensic implications of social networks, current research on both digital forensics and social networks need to be incorporated and understood. This will help digital forensics investigators to predict, detect and even prevent …
Promoting Student Buy-In: Using Writing To Develop Mathematical Understanding, Barbara King, Denise Raposo, Mercedes Gimenez
Promoting Student Buy-In: Using Writing To Develop Mathematical Understanding, Barbara King, Denise Raposo, Mercedes Gimenez
Georgia Educational Researcher
Writing in mathematics provides students with the opportunity to think critically about and reflect on their experiences while solving problems. While many studies have documented the benefit of writing in math, it is not clear which instructional methods should be used to help students learn how to use writing to support learning. In this study, we take a constructivist approach to building students understanding of effective writing by developing a series of active, student-centered lessons. The findings indicate that students wrote more effectively after the instructional sequence; in particular, they were better able to explain their reasoning and to make …

Are You Wo(Man) Enough To Get Married?, Tiurma M. P. Allagan
Indonesia Law Review
The Indonesian Marriage Law states that marriage is a physical and spiritual relationship between a man and a woman as husband and wife in order to create an eternal happy family based on the Almighty God. This definition reflects that marriages in Indonesia must be between heterosexual couples. However, a question appears as to whether a man or a woman mentioned thereof includes a man and a woman who were hermaphrodite, intersex, or nowadays known as a person with Disorder of Sexual Development (DSD)? The case of AH whereby his marriage was cancelled by the Supreme Court in 2014 for …

This work demonstrates the use of genetic algorithms in optimized view planning for 3D reconstruction applications using small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The quality of UAV site models is currently highly dependent on manual pilot operations or grid-based automation solutions. When applied to 3D structures, these approaches can result in gaps in the total coverage or inconsistency in final model resolution. Genetic algorithms can effectively explore the search space to locate image positions that produce high quality models in terms of coverage and accuracy. A fitness function is defined, and optimization parameters are selected through semi-exhaustive search. A novel simulation …
Minibrain And Wings Apart Control Organ Growth And Tissue Patterning Through Downregulation Of Capicua, Liu Yang
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
The regulation of organ growth is a fundamental aspect of developmental biology. My work uses Drosophila as a model system to understand how the various growth regulators are coordinated. The transcriptional repressor Capicua (Cic) controls tissue patterning and restricts organ growth, and has been recently implicated in several cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. Cic has emerged as a primary sensor of signaling downstream of the receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK)/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway, but how Cic activity is regulated in different cellular contexts remains poorly understood. In order to identify Cic regulators, I have used affinity purification/mass spectrometry (AP-MS) to study …

'Whose Goals Am I Meeting?' Policy And Practice Dilemmas In Adult Basic Education (Abe) In The Era Of Accountability, Alma Hallulli Biba
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
For the last two decades, federal legislation and Massachusetts’ state ABE policies have linked adult learners’ educational outcomes to performance systems and accountability requirements. These outcomes, represented as ‘goals’, reflect an emphasis on return-on-investment strategies and outcome-based accountability measures. Greatest emphasis is placed on that subset of adult learners’ goals that are easily measured, attainable, and that are associated with public outcomes. This dissertation, in contrast, seeks to understand the goal setting process from the perspective of learners and local ABE stakeholders. Using a novel, mixed-method approach, this dissertation presents ABE learners’ goal setting as a decision problem in order …
Evolution In The Deep Sea: Scales And Mechanisms Of Population Divergence, Amanda E. Glazier
Evolution In The Deep Sea: Scales And Mechanisms Of Population Divergence, Amanda E. Glazier
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
The deep sea is the Earth’s largest ecosystem and harbors a unique and largely endemic fauna. Although most research has focused on the ecological mechanisms that allow coexistence, recent studies have begun to investigate how this remarkable fauna evolved.. My work quantifies geographic patterns of genetic variation and investigates potential mechanisms that shape evolution in the deep ocean.
Bathymetric genetic divergence is common in the deep sea with population structure typically decreasing with depth. The evolutionary mechanisms that underlie these patterns are poorly understood. Geographic patterns of genetic variation indicated that the protobranch bivalve Neilonella salicensis was composed of two …

Supporting Metacognitive Awareness And Strategy Use Through Digital Photography In A Rural Title I School, Antonio P. Gutierrez De Blume, Mete Akcaoglu, Wendy L. Chambers
National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal
The Photography and Media Literacy Project (PMLP) was an after-school program designed to teach fourth and fifth grade children about the science and art of photography in a Title I school in rural southeast Georgia. Through the completion of a problem-based applied project, we endeavored to further enhance and develop students’ media literacy, critical thinking, and metacognitive skills. The project involved having students consider some aspect of their environment (i.e., a problem from the natural, physical, school or social environment) and develop a media presentation about the topic (e.g., a movie), which included images that they took (with iPods that …

Possibilities And Challenges Of Teaching Integrated Math And Social Studies For Social Justice: Two Teacher Educators' Collaborative Self-Study, Paula P. Guerra, Sohyun An
Georgia Educational Researcher
In this paper, we—one mathematics teacher educator and one social studies teacher educator—describe a project where we collaborated to model teaching integrated mathematics and social studies for social justice in our methods courses. We encountered varied challenges in our efforts to prepare teacher candidates for social-justice-oriented lessons. These challenges included teacher candidates’ perception of authority/credibility of their professors who were foreign females from the “Third World”, teacher candidates’ deficit views on minoritized students, and the limited time and resources for teacher collaboration in teacher education. Despite these challenges, we believe this kind of project is necessary to move forward in …

Cervical Disc Herniation With Myelopathy Following Cervical Tuina Manipulation, Valeria Jia-Yi Chiu, Shu-Yuan Chou, Yu-Ting Hsieh, Yi-Shiung Horng
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Complications following cervical manipulation can be classified as cerebrovascular or noncerebrovascular complications. The former complications occur more frequently, and they are usually due to vertebral artery occlusion, damage or thrombus formation. The latter include spinal cord or nerve root injuries and have seldom been reported. Herniation of the cervical disc with myelopathy following manipulation is rare. However, we have encountered two patients who developed cervical disc herniation with myelopathy secondary to cervical tuina manipulation for nuchalgia at the bone setting facilities. One of the patients suffered from shooting pain during manipulation and developed tetraparesis two days later. An MRI examination …

Reform of the U.S. international income taxation system has been a hotly debated topic for many years. The principal competing alternatives are a territorial or exemption system and a worldwide system. For reasons summarized in this article, we favor worldwide taxation if it is real worldwide taxation – i.e., a non-deferred U.S. tax is imposed on all foreign income of U.S. residents at the time the income in earned. This approach is not acceptable, however, unless the resulting double taxation is alleviated. The longstanding U.S. approach for handling the international double taxation problem is a foreign tax credit limited to …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Recent studies of flood risk at New York Harbor (NYH) have shown disparate results for the 100 year storm tide, providing an uncertain foundation for the flood mitigation response after Hurricane Sandy. Here we present a flood hazard assessment that improves confidence in our understanding of the region's present-day potential for flooding, by separately including the contribution of tropical cyclones (TCs) and extratropical cyclones (ETCs), and validating our modeling study at multiple stages against historical observations. The TC assessment is based on a climatology of 606 synthetic storms developed from a statistical-stochastic model of North Atlantic TCs. The ETC assessment …

Micro-Meso-Macro Comparative Law: An Essay On The Methodology Of Comparative Law, Alessandro Romano
Micro-Meso-Macro Comparative Law: An Essay On The Methodology Of Comparative Law, Alessandro Romano
Chicago-Kent Journal of International and Comparative Law
There are strong analogies between the quest for a methodology of comparative law and the broader debate on the epistemology of social and natural sciences. In this vein, after having explored the dispute between holists and reductionists, I argue that the dichotomy between micro and macro comparative law ought to be abandoned. Building on the insights of social theory, I introduce a specific framework to bridge the two levels of enquiry through a meso analysis. This framework is applied to investigate the robustness of the findings of the legal origin theory.
On Saints, Sinners, And Sex In The Apocalypse Of Saint John And The Sefer Zerubbabel, Natalie Latteri
On Saints, Sinners, And Sex In The Apocalypse Of Saint John And The Sefer Zerubbabel, Natalie Latteri
Theology & Religious Studies
The Apocalypse of St. John and the Sefer Zerubbabel [a.k.a Apocalypse of Zerubbabel] are among the most popular apocalypses of the Common Era. While the Johannine Apocalypse was written by a first-century Jewish-Christian author and would later be refracted through a decidedly Christian lens, and the Sefer Zerubbabel was probably composed by a seventh-century Jewish author for a predominantly Jewish audience, the two share much in the way of plot, narrative motifs, and archetypal characters. An examination of these commonalities and, in particular, how they intersect with gender and sexuality, suggests that these texts also may have functioned similarly as …

Piercing The Corporate Veil Us Lessons From Romania And Slovakia, Alexandra Horvathova, Catalin Gabriel Stanescu
Chicago-Kent Journal of International and Comparative Law
This article describes and analyzes the doctrine of piercing the corporate veil in various jurisdictions across the world. First, it introduces the development and history of this doctrine in the United States - the jurisdiction, which has nurtured this legal concept for several centuries. Second, it analyzes its possible implementation within two chosen jurisdictions in Central and Eastern Europe: Romania and Slovakia. The authors’ aim is to assess their home jurisdictions and examine whether these jurisdictions apply the doctrine, if so, then in which form and to what extent. The authors analyze different areas of their respective legal systems - …
