Computational Study And Optimization Of Wet Cooling Media In Direct Evaporative Heat Exchanger, Tejas Vijay Bhongale Dec 2016

Computational Study And Optimization Of Wet Cooling Media In Direct Evaporative Heat Exchanger, Tejas Vijay Bhongale

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Evaporative cooling media pads are the primary component of importance in direct evaporative cooling units. To increase the overall efficiency of direct evaporative cooling systems, a wet cooling media pad is considered for further optimization in design and operation. An installation technique called ‘staging’ of cooling media pads is examined and evaluated for its incremental cooling, water usage, and operational cooling efficiency. For Staging, a cooling media is divided into multiple vertical sections, and separate water distribution headers control each part. Staging of cooling media can reduce water consumption in data centers and potentially lessen the amount of cooling media …

An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Supervision And Job Satisfaction Factors Among Residence Directors And Resident Assistants, Stephen A. Berg

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive

Supervising Resident Assistants (RAs) on college campuses is one of the most critical roles of housing staff members. The RA position is difficult based on the number of responsibilities the job requires; it is filled with multiple stressors, such as role ambiguity and role conflict. Supervision is a critical skill for student affairs professionals to possess yet there remains little research on the supervision of RAs. In this study, the relationship between perceived levels of synergistic supervision, training, and job satisfaction factors was examined among residence directors (RDs) and RAs. The researcher sought to fill this gap the in the …

The Effective Practices Of Tasa Honor School Boards In Texas: A View Through The Lens Of Scott's Three Pillars Of Institutional Theory, Kendra Leigh Nelson

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive

Quality public schools are linked to the effectiveness of their school boards, and voting for local trustees, elected lay men and women, impacts the overall condition of local communities (Foster, 2014). Experts believe school board adeptness and efficiency can be increased by improving procedures (Sell, 2005). Looking through the lens of institutional theory, the purpose of this study was to examine the implementation of Richard Scott’s three pillars of institutionalization (regulative, normative, and cultural-cognitive forces) through exploring specific procedures of TASA Honor Boards as compared to demographically similar boards. This study relied on content analysis of school board meeting minutes …

Multi-Modality Magnetic Resonance Imaging In Typical And Atypical Developmental Human Brain, Minhui Ouyang Dec 2016

Multi-Modality Magnetic Resonance Imaging In Typical And Atypical Developmental Human Brain, Minhui Ouyang

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Human brain development is structurally and functionally a nonlinear process and even with the tremendous advancements in the field of neuroimaging based on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) several significant questions remain un-answered. Although brain change and adaption are part of a lifelong process, the earliest phases of maturation, especially from birth to early childhood, are perhaps the most dramatic and important. During this early developmental period, the structural and functional organization of the brain are continuously shaped by a combination of synaptogenesis, dendritic arborization, myelination and synaptic pruning. The current research aims to use more recently developed MRI techniques of …

Integration Of Bim And Utility Sensor Data For Facilities Management, Kamal Suprabhas Dec 2016

Integration Of Bim And Utility Sensor Data For Facilities Management, Kamal Suprabhas

Open Access Theses

Building information modelling represents a building as a database of coordinated, consistent and computable information in construction (Sabol, 2008). There has been a recent trend to study the usage of BIM for post-construction facility management. Recently, attempts are also being made to link a BIM model with smart sensing technology or building automation systems (BAC). This thesis aims to investigate the feasibility of using sensor data from mote based light sensors tied to a BIM model, to be used for maintenance based facility management. More specifically, a prototype will be developed that integrates lighting sensor data collected using a mote …

Expectation Maximization-Based Likelihood Inference For Com-Poisson Cure Rate Model With Interval Censored Data, Piyachart Wiangnak Dec 2016

Expectation Maximization-Based Likelihood Inference For Com-Poisson Cure Rate Model With Interval Censored Data, Piyachart Wiangnak

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

A cure rate or long-term survival model is a model for survival data with the presence of a cure fraction. In this study, we consider the analysis of a cure rate model with interval-censored data, which is one of the most practical censoring scheme in survival study. A competing cause scenario has been considered and the number of competing causes is assumed to follow a flexible Conway-Maxwell Poisson (COM-Poisson) distribution which can handle both over- and under-dispersion that is usually encountered in discrete data and also includes some of the well-known discrete distributions as special cases. In addition, a logistic …

Navigating Women's Cultural Representation Through Video Games In The Obama Era, Mark Stephen Reeder Dec 2016

Navigating Women's Cultural Representation Through Video Games In The Obama Era, Mark Stephen Reeder

English Theses - Archive

While the representations of women in video games have remained disappointingly negative since the 1980s, America’s political shift from the presidencies of George W. Bush to Barack Obama in 2007 had important cultural implications, particularly impacting the representation of women in popular culture. This thesis will examine the cultural depictions of women from 2002-2011, providing a particular focus on the unique cultural factors prevalent during this time period—including the expansion of pornography, a conservative cultural backlash to Obama, and the rapid deterioration of ‘political correctness’—that impacted how images of women in video games were received. Analyzing the cultural atmosphere of …

The World In The Screen: How The Mobile Device Symbolizes Technogenesis, Joel Mathew Morrow Dec 2016

The World In The Screen: How The Mobile Device Symbolizes Technogenesis, Joel Mathew Morrow

English Theses - Archive

The smart phone, or mobile device, holds a preeminent role in a technologically advanced society. These devices allow for connection, productivity, and distraction, and in doing so create new anxieties and underscore old ones. By tracing the provenance of this artifact, we see how our relationship with mobile devices amplifies our relationship with technology as a whole. This thesis examines the development of the mobile device from the viewpoints of social constructivism and technogenesis to illustrate how our increasing intimacy with these devices is part of a long-standing pattern of co-evolution between humans and the technologies they create.

A Self-Regulated Learning Inventory Based On A Six-Dimensional Model Of Srl, Christopher Nuttall Dec 2016

A Self-Regulated Learning Inventory Based On A Six-Dimensional Model Of Srl, Christopher Nuttall

Theses and Dissertations

This report discusses a study undertaken to develop, pilot, and tentatively validate a self- regulated learning (SRL) inventory for L2 contexts. This inventory was specifically designed to measure learners' ability to self-regulate their learning. Although there have been a few SRL inventories developed to measure this ability, they do not conform to the six-dimensional SRL model proposed by educational psychologists and backed by extensive research. This warranted the development of a new SRL inventory. The primary focus of this study was that of taking initial steps to develop such an inventory. These steps involved writing and refining items conforming to …

Limited Attention, Marital Events And Hedge Funds, Yan Lu, Sugata Ray, Melvyn Teo Dec 2016

Limited Attention, Marital Events And Hedge Funds, Yan Lu, Sugata Ray, Melvyn Teo

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We explore the impact of limited attention by analyzing the performance of hedge fund managers who are distracted by marital events. We find that marriages and divorces are associated with significantly lower fund alpha, during the six-month period surrounding and the two-year period after the event. Busy managers who manage multiple funds and who are not part of a team are more affected by marital transitions. Inattentive managers place fewer active bets relative to their style peers, load more on index stocks, exhibit higher R-squareds with respect to systematic factors, and are more prone to the disposition effect.

Brain Transcriptional Profiles Of Male Alternative Reproductive Tactics And Females In Bluegill Sunfish, Charlyn Partridge Dec 2016

Brain Transcriptional Profiles Of Male Alternative Reproductive Tactics And Females In Bluegill Sunfish, Charlyn Partridge

Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles

Bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) are one of the classic systems for studying male alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs) in teleost fishes. In this species, there are two distinct life histories: parental and cuckolder, encompassing three reproductive tactics, parental, satellite, and sneaker. The parental life history is fixed, whereas individuals who enter the cuckolder life history transition from sneaker to satellite tactic as they grow. For this study, we used RNAseq to characterize the brain transcriptome of the three male tactics and females during spawning to identify gene ontology (GO) categories and potential candidate genes associated with each tactic. We …

From Global To Local: Reshoring For Sustainability, Al Ashby Dec 2016

From Global To Local: Reshoring For Sustainability, Al Ashby

Plymouth Business School

The UK clothing industry has seen the extensive offshoring of manufacturing, which has created fragmented global supply chains; these present a range of supply issues and challenges, including many related to sustainability. Reshoring is a reversion of a previous offshoring decision, thereby ‘bringing manufacturing back home’ (Gray et al. J Supply Chain Management 49(2):27–33, 2013), and can be motivated by increased costs and supply management problems. While not a new phenomenon, the reshoring of activities is growing in practice and there is an imperative for academic research (Fratocchi et al. J Purch Supply Manag 20:54–59, 2014). Through an in-depth longitudinal …

A Decision Support System For Strategic Maintenance Planning In Offshore Wind Farms, X Li, D Ouelhadj, X Song, D Jones, Et Al

Plymouth Business School

This paper presents a Decision Support System (DSS) for maintenance cost optimisation at an Offshore Wind Farm (OWF). The DSS is designed for use by multiple stakeholders in the OWF sector with the overall goal of informing maintenance strategy and hence reducing overall lifecycle maintenance costs at the OWF. Two optimisation models underpin the DSS. The first is a deterministic model that is intended for use by stakeholders with access to accurate failure rate data. The second is a stochastic model that is intended for use by stakeholders who have less certainty about failure rates. Solutions of both models are …

The Candidate Cluster And Protocluster Catalog (Ccpc). Ii. Spectroscopically Identified Structures Spanning 2 < Z < 6.6, J. R. Franck, Stacy S. Mcgaugh

Faculty Scholarship

The Candidate Cluster and Protocluster Catalog (CCPC) is a list of objects at redshifts z > 2 composed of galaxies with spectroscopically confirmed redshifts that are coincident on the sky and in redshift. These protoclusters are identified by searching for groups in volumes corresponding to the expected size of the most massive protoclusters at these redshifts. In CCPC1 we identified 43 candidate protoclusters among 14,000 galaxies between 2.74 < z < 3.71. Here we expand our search to more than 40,000 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts z > 2.00, resulting in an additional 173 candidate structures. The most significant of these are 36 protoclusters with overdensities δ gal > 7. We also identify three large proto-supercluster candidates containing multiple protoclusters at z …

Pro-Entrepreneurial Human Resource Management In Non-Profit Organizations, Rafał Kusa Dec 2016

Pro-Entrepreneurial Human Resource Management In Non-Profit Organizations, Rafał Kusa

European Management Studies

The aim of the paper is to examine the human resources management (HRM) in not-profit organisations in view of entrepreneurship theory and to identify some problems which could be crucial for future research and development of pro-entrepreneurial HRM practices in non-profit organizations. It was suggested that some solutions from business ventures can be implemented in non-profit organisations, but specific traits of them (as engagement of volunteers and their motivation and expectations) have to be taken into account. The pro-entrepreneurial HRM in non-profit organisations was analysed in relevance to different types of people’s involvement (employees, volunteers, members, social entrepreneurs) and selected …

Application Of The Grounded Theory Methodology In Hrm Research Within Private And Public Sector – An Attempt At A Meta-Analysis Of Articles Published On The Isi Master Journal List Between 2010 And 2014, Katarzyna Susabowska

European Management Studies

The aim of the study is to assess the cognitive value of research results presented in the articles concerning HRM in which the grounded theory methodology was used. The article puts forward the meta-analysis as a tool for comparing the results of previous empirical research published during the period of the last five years (2010–2014) on the ISI Master Journal List. I hope that my research will add to debates on issues of HRM within the private and public sector.

Laying The Groundwork For A National Impact Investing Marketplace, Stephanie L. Gripne, Joanne Kelley, Kathy Merchant Dec 2016

Laying The Groundwork For A National Impact Investing Marketplace, Stephanie L. Gripne, Joanne Kelley, Kathy Merchant

The Foundation Review

The practice of impact investing is rapidly gaining momentum, but the level of activity among individual and institutional investors, including philanthropists and foundations, has barely penetrated projections of market potential.

The marketplace that should connect impact investors with investees or social ventures does not function effectively.

Developing cost-effective ways to engage new investors and break down barriers to investment is an essential part of growing the industry.

Developing cost-effective ways to “prime the pump” for social ventures to become investor-ready — through a capacity-building process that includes outreach, education, and technical assistance — is an essential part of growing the …

Implementation And Testing Of A Book Lookup System For The Robert E. Kennedy Library, Casey C. Sheehan

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The goal of this senior project centered around improving the quality of student and teacher experiences when visiting the library. The task of finding a book amongst the shelves is an arduous one, which I felt could be improved upon through implementation and testing of a Book Lookup system for the Cal Poly Robert E. Kennedy Library. Development for this project was done using a Python framework. Testing and earlier designs were also created using JavaScript and PHP. Repeated tests were conducted on the accuracy of the software and its ability to decrease user search-time when compared to conventional methods.

Review Classification, Balraj Aujla

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The goal of this project is to find a way to analyze reviews and determine the sentiment of a review. It uses various machine learning techniques in order to achieve its goals such as SVMs and Naive Bayes. Overall the purpose is to learn many different machine learning techniques, determine which ones would be useful for the project, then compare the results. Research is the foremost goal of the project, and it is able to determine the better algorithm for review classification, naive bayes or an SVM. In addition, an SVM which actually gave review’s scores rather than just classifying …

Elasticity Of Cylindrical Black Holes, Conrad Pearson Dec 2016

Elasticity Of Cylindrical Black Holes, Conrad Pearson

Physics

Black holes are regions of strong gravity, and are often regarded as behaving like drops of fluid. When this line of thought is applied to cylindrical black holes (black cylinders), a mapping can be made between known instabilities for black cylinders and ordinary fluid cylinders. However, this known correlation is increasingly less accurate for lower spatial dimensions, and I seek to correct this discrepancy in this thesis. By considering soft solids instead of pure fluids, elastic energy can be included, which brings us closer to a direct comparison. In improving this mapping, it becomes possible to better understand the behavior …

(Non-) Speech Acts: The Performative Power Of Silence, Jane Chin Davidson Dec 2016

(Non-) Speech Acts: The Performative Power Of Silence, Jane Chin Davidson

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

Judgment of accented speech as “inferior English” or “immigrant speech” reinforces an aural type of racial discrimination, especially in the political context of education and the state. The institutional silencing of “defective” speech substantiates the practice of self-silencing in which the (non-) speech act functions as a phenomenological engagement and as a non-performativity of racial difference.
