Research & Publications

Behavioral Change Support Systems (BCSSs) is a socio-technical information systems with psychological and behavioral outcomes aim to change users’ behavior and lifestyle. The promising outcomes of BCSSs make them especially useful in certain areas such as healthcare, where these systems could be leveraged to motivate people toward healthy behavior and then help them to achieve their goals better. However, health BCSSs cannot help facilitate self-monitoring and self-management or even improve patients’ health outcomes when patients do not accept the technology first. In this article, we extend the existing literature of users’ acceptance of health BCSSs by introducing new variables that …

Saudi Medical Journal

Cystic lymphangioma usually confined to head and neck is a well-recognized tumor that occurs during childhood. However, a cardiac lymphangioma is exceptionally uncommon and a particularly rare form of disease. We report a case of cystic lymphangioma arising from the right ventricular wall, and presenting as pericardial mass in a young female, who presented with a history of exercise intolerance in the form of breathlessness on exertion and palpitations. The management of such a case was a difficult task; however, she underwent near total resection of the mass, and is doing well for the last 2 years.

Safety Guidance For Manned Aircraft Pilots Operating In The Presence Of Drones, Aviators Code Initiative Jan 2016

Safety Guidance For Manned Aircraft Pilots Operating In The Presence Of Drones, Aviators Code Initiative

Flight Safety in the Drone Age

Drones, or Unmanned Aircraft Systems—UAS— create substantive (if not profound) new capabilities, opportunities, and benefits. But as drones become more common, manned aircraft operators face new challenges. The FAA asserts that drones “are inherently different from manned aircraft” and “create situations not common to manned flight.” Current safety initiatives advancing aircraft integration focus almost exclusively on drone operators using education, regulation, and (more recently) enforcement. Promising technologies may provide effective manned/unmanned aircraft interoperability in the near future, but these nascent efforts do not fully address the risks to manned aircraft created by drones.

Faculty Scholarship

On October 2, 1997, the Member States of the European Union signed the Treaty of Amsterdam which amended the European Community Treaty (ECT). Among the Amsterdam Treaty's most important new provisions was ECT Article 13, which authorized the Council of Ministers, acting unanimously, to "take appropriate action to combat discrimination based on sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief disability, age or sexual orientation." The Council acted with surprising rapidity to adopt Directive 2000/78, which prohibits discrimination in employment on all the listed bases (except for "racial or ethnic origin, " which is covered by Directive 2000/43). Since December …

Airline Pilots In Recovery From Alcoholism: A Quantitative Study Of Cognitive Change, Heather Christina Hamilton Jan 2016

Airline Pilots In Recovery From Alcoholism: A Quantitative Study Of Cognitive Change, Heather Christina Hamilton

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In order to perform their duties, airline pilots must have no clinical diagnosis of mental illness or any substance use disorder. However, provisions have been in place since the 1970s that provide for a return to work for airline pilots with alcohol problems. To date, over 5,000 airline pilots have undergone rehabilitation for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) and successfully returned to work. An important gap in the literature remains with regard to what extent improvements in cognitive performance may be experienced by airline pilots who complete treatment and to what extent age influences the amount of change. This study examined …
