Pretty Maps: Evaluating Gis Adoption Of Cartographic Design Standards And Best Practices In Professional Publications, David Medeiros Jan 2016

Pretty Maps: Evaluating Gis Adoption Of Cartographic Design Standards And Best Practices In Professional Publications, David Medeiros

Master's Theses

The nature of GIS maps, as tools designed for visual communication, puts them in the realm of art that is in many ways unique among scientific tools. As a visual form of communication, maps are responsive to methods of visual design, affecting the map’s appeal and function. Through cartography, a well established body of standards and best-practices exists to help GIS users avoid common design errors and create effective and meaningful maps that support their work. This research examines the adoption rate of those standards amongst professionals using GIS software for creating maps for journal publications. A selection of 80 …

Religious Identity And The Provision Of Public Goods: Evidence From The Indian Princely States, Latika Chaudhary, Jared Rubin Jan 2016

Religious Identity And The Provision Of Public Goods: Evidence From The Indian Princely States, Latika Chaudhary, Jared Rubin

ESI Publications

This paper describes a simple model of how a ruler’s religious identity affects public goods provision. Our primary insight is that rulers reduce public goods expenditures to a greater degree when there are privately-provided substitutes excludable by religion. The basic idea is that if the good is provided privately to the ruler’s co-religionists, the ruler faces weaker incentives to provide this public good because his co-religionists receive lower marginal utility from its provision. Testing such a conjecture is an empirical challenge, however, since the religious identity of rulers rarely varies over time and place. We address this problem by exploiting …

Nonverbal Indicators Of Pain, Simon Van Rysewyk Jan 2016

Nonverbal Indicators Of Pain, Simon Van Rysewyk

Animal Sentience

In discussing fish pain, Key (2016) privileges pain in humans — “the only species able to directly report on its feelings.” Human experience of pain is not necessarily best reflected by verbal self-report, however. Neural responses to noxious stimuli are influenced by individual differences and by context. Nonverbal pain displays such as facial expressions reflect part of the neural response to noxious stimuli. Most mammals have a specific facial grimace reflecting pain. If fish have a somatic expression of pain, the development of a reliable and accurate somatic pain scale specific to fish could make a contribution to the debate …

Taking Bankruptcy Rights Seriously, Rafael I. Pardo Jan 2016

Taking Bankruptcy Rights Seriously, Rafael I. Pardo

Scholarship@WashULaw

Perhaps more so than any other area of law affecting individuals of low-to-moderate means, bankruptcy poignantly presents an affordability paradox: The system’s purpose is to relieve individuals from financial distress, yet it simultaneously demands a significant commitment of resources to obtain such relief. To date, no one has undertaken a comprehensive study of the complexities and costs of the litigation burden that Congress has imposed on self-represented debtors who seek a fresh start in bankruptcy. In order to explore the problems inherent in a system that sometimes necessitates litigation as the path for vindicating a debtor’s statutory right to a …

The Business Of Treaties, Melissa (M.J.) Durkee Jan 2016

The Business Of Treaties, Melissa (M.J.) Durkee

Scholarship@WashULaw

Business entities play important and underappreciated roles in the production of international treaties. At the same time, international treaty law is hobbled by state- centric presumptions that render its response to business ad hoc and unprincipled.

This Article makes three principal contributions. First, it draws from case studies to demonstrate the significance of business participation in treaty production. The descriptive account invites a shift from attention to traditional lobbying at the domestic level and private standard-setting at the transnational level to the ways business entities have become autonomous international actors, using a panoply of means to transform their preferred policies …

Love And Hate In University Technology Transfer: Examining Faculty And Staff Conflicts And Ethical Issues, Clovia Hamilton Jan 2016

Love And Hate In University Technology Transfer: Examining Faculty And Staff Conflicts And Ethical Issues, Clovia Hamilton

Winthrop Faculty and Staff Publications

With respect to university technology transfer, the purpose of this paper is to examine the literature focused on the relationship between university research faculty and technology transfer office staff. We attempt to provide greater understanding of how research faculty’s personal values and research universities’ organization values may differ and why. Faculty researchers and tech transfer office (TTO) staff are perceived to be virtuous agents. When both are meeting each other’s needs, a “love” relationship exists. However, when these needs are not met, a “hate” relationship exists that is replete with doubt and uncertainty. This doubt and uncertainty creates tension and …

A Case Study On Establishing A Community Advisory Board: What Are The Main Challenges?, Erika Perez

Student Research – Stevenson Center

As part of my professional practice for my master’s degree in Sociology-Applied Economic and Community Development, my main responsibility was to develop a community leadership group for a non-profit in Providence, Rhode Island. The agency, Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island, offers a variety of services to immigrants and incoming refugees. My role as a Community Advisory Board Coordinator involved establishing a community group while giving opportunities for leadership and client input on services received from the agency. Community boards serve an important role in any organization as they offer valuable input in creating high-quality services. However, organizing community groups …

Youth Personhood @Crossroad: A Virtual Ethnography Of An Asymmetrical Relation Between Digital Natives And Digital Immigrants In Indonesia, Sofyan Ansori, Febrian -, Hafiz A. Ramadhan

Antropologi Indonesia

Indonesian youth has developed into the largest internet user in this country. The development of technology drives the digital natives toward new challenges in identity attainment (personhood). It is common for young people to have a “storm and stress” phase in their life which is part of their identity attainment as one of the major and basic tasks of youth daily life. However, along with youth behavior in using internet, a generational problem emerges. The problematic behavior pattern includes taking dangerous selfies, sexting, cyberbullying, and promoting the radical activism. Through a research conducted with online observation and virtual ethnography, we …

Psychology Faculty Publications

In the current investigation, we sought to examine "day-of-the-week" drinking of an at-risk sample of nonstudent emerging adults and whether specific factors are associated with differential drinking patterns. Our study aims were to (a) identify differences in weekday versus weekend drinking, and (b) examine specific expectancies (i.e., sociability, tension reduction) and demographic factors (e.g., age, sex) relating to weekend versus weekday drinking after controlling for harmful drinking and holiday drinking. Participants were heavy-drinking noncollege attenders recruited from the community (N = 238; 63.4% men, 35.7% women; M age = 21.92 years). They reported daily drinking for the previous 30 days …

Does Teaching Parents Emotion-Coaching Strategies Change Parental Perception Of Children's Negative Emotions?, Eric Labass

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The purpose of this study was to explore if parental perception of children's negative emotions changes after participating in the parenting program How to Talk to Kids So Kids Will Listen-Video Series (HTK) (Faber & Mazlish, 2002). The HTK workshop comprises six sessions designed to teach parents to identify and empathize with children's feelings and learn emotional communication skills that facilitate a respectful relationship between parent and child. The Coping with Children's Negative Emotions Scale (CCNES) (Fabes, Eisenberg, & Bernzweig, 1990) was given to parents before and after participation in the HTK workshop. The CCNES revealed that a total of …

Effective Combat Leadership: How Do Individual, Social, And Organizational Factors In The U.S. Army Reserve Cultivate Effective Women's Leadership In Dangerous Contexts?, Diana Drita Ellerman

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This research centered on the experiences of a dozen women who served in U.S. Army Reserve leadership positions. Although they served in dangerous contexts the Army had an exclusionary policy at the time that formally excluded the women from direct combat. The impetus for the research was Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta's announcement in January 2013 that the U.S. military would be eliminating the exclusionary policy. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into what individual, social, and organizational factors support women's effective leadership in dangerous contexts. The research utilized narrative inquiry in order to bring forth the …

The Drive To Write: Inside The Writing Lives Of Five Fiction Authors, Emily S. Fine Jan 2016

The Drive To Write: Inside The Writing Lives Of Five Fiction Authors, Emily S. Fine

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Authors of fiction often describe writing as a psychologically meaningful and emotionally charged process. While ample research has provided evidence for the mental and physical health benefits of writing (e.g., Pennebaker & Seagal, 1999), few studies have methodically examined the inner life of the fiction writer. This study explored two primary questions: (a) Why do authors write? and (b) How does the act of writing affect them in turn? This study employed Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) as a guiding methodology. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five authors of fiction, then transcribed and analyzed to generate a rich interpretative account. The …
