‘The Willing Women Are Standing Waiting Now’: British Women, The Second World War, And The Women’S Library At The London School Of Economics And Political Science, Erin Doerner

SLIS Connecting

Since the end of the Second World War some 70 years ago, research and scholarship featuring wartime contributions of the average British citizenhasfocused largely on men's experiences of combat, the various roles of government agencies, or the assumed viability and tenacity of political and military leaders. The role of gender in the experience of war was often a side-note, not a focus of research. Since the 1960s, and more frequently since the late 1980s, a new wartime perspective has begun to be documented and explored in academic and literary scholarship - that of British women.

This study examines primary materials …

Core Values: Intellectual Freedom And Privacy In Public Libraries, Stephanie A. Evans

SLIS Connecting

With the passing of the USA Patriot Act in 2001 following the events of 9/11, libraries on the national scale have had to staunchly defend issues of privacy and confidentially more-so than ever before. Evidence of this lies not only in statements within the ALA’s Resolution on the USA PATRIOT Act and Libraries but also in other core documents which guide policy development in public libraries (ALA 2005). Intellectual Freedom and privacy are two of the major issues addressed and protected by the American Library Association through the Office of Intellectual Freedom and the Library Bill of Rights (ALA 1996).

Asian American Women's Resilience: An Integrative Review, Andrew Thomas Reyes, Rose E. Constantino

Asian/Pacific Island Nursing Journal

Asian American women face unique stressors that threaten their overall health and well-being. However, resilience is a phenomenon that allows individuals to develop positive adaptation despite adversities and challenges. This integrative review is conducted in order to explore the current state of knowledge regarding the resilience of Asian American women. Twelve databases were used to identify related articles: Academic Search Premier, CINAHL, ERIC, Ethnic NewsWatch, GenderWatch, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global, ProQuest Sociological Abstracts, PsycINFO, PubMed, SAGE (Psychology and Sociology collections), Scopus, and Web of Science. Twenty-one research studies met the inclusion criteria of the integrative review. Five common themes …

A Risk Stratification Model For Antihypertensive Medication Non-Adherence Among Chinese Immigrants, Wen-Wen Li, Chih-Ling Huang

Asian/Pacific Island Nursing Journal

The purpose of this study was to establish a risk stratification model for identifying Chinese immigrants at risk for non-adherence to antihypertensive medications. Questionnaires were self-administered to 200 Chinese immigrants in San Francisco, USA. Questionnaires included demographics, culture factors (e.g., Perceived Susceptibility in General, Perceived Benefits of Western Medication, Perceived Benefits of Chinese Herbs, and Health-Related Social Support), and medications adherence. Participants' mean age was 70.6 (±10.3) years. Three stratification factors were identified for non-adherence: Lower Perceived Susceptibility in General, lower Perceived Benefit of Western Medications, and longer Length of Stay in the United States. The probability of non-adherence was …

New Prediction Approach For Stabilizing Time-Varying Systems Under Time-Varying Input Delay, Frederic Mazenc, Michael Malisoff

Faculty Publications

We provide a new sequential predictors approach for the exponential stabilization of linear time-varying systems with pointwise time-varying input delays. Our method circumvents the problem of constructing and estimating distributed terms in the stabilizing control laws, and allows arbitrarily large input delay bounds. We illustrate our method using a pendulum dynamics.

Associating Mathematics To Its History: Connecting The Mathematics We Teach To Its Past, Joseph M. Furner, Ernest A. Brewer

Transformations

Across the USA and around the world now, globalization has taken a strong hold. The purpose of this paper is to explore the historical considerations that can be incorporated in the teaching of mathematics. The paper will also provide suggestions for teaching math by interweaving historical elements into the mathematics instruction. Teachers should strive to bridge the cultural and historical gap among all students by incorporating innovative ideas as well as historical and cultural connections into their teaching so to foster understanding, appreciation, and tolerance for the richness inherent in diversity and a sound understanding of mathematics and appreciation for …

Every Student Can Be An Einstein: Addressing Math Anxiety In Today’S Classrooms, Joseph M. Furner

Transformations

This article is geared toward mathematics educators in hopes that they can ultimately excite young people about mathematics, encourage students to be confident in their ability to solve problems, understand mathematical concepts, and see math as a human endeavor. The author believes that as students feel less anxious about and more confident in their abilities to do math that their performance will improve. As math test scores are often a concern for principals, teachers, and society at large, success and confidence with mathematics is critical in our high-tech globally competitive world. Math anxiety has become a growing concern in the …

Using Technology And Media-Rich Platforms To Help Teach The Pythagorean Theorem, Hui Fang Huang Su, Denise Gates, Janice Haramis, Farrah Bell, Claude Manigat, Kristin Hierpe, Lourivaldo Da Silva

Transformations

The history of mathematics is quite extensive, dating back to ancient times and elapsing several centuries. Many great mathematicians, philosophers, scientists, and scholars have contributed to mathematics on the subject we see today. For the purpose of this research project, we have chosen to highlight the great mathematician Pythagoras and his famous Pythagorean Theorem. We investigate the history of the Pythagorean Theorem, relationships among Pythagorean numbers, and unusual proofs of the Theorem. This paper provides a suggestive lesson plan, activity, and presentation for classroom use.

Macroinvertebrate Community Composition, Food Web Structure, And Emergence Rate In Neotropical Cloud-Forest Streams In Mindo, Ecuador, Anna M. Harris

Masters Theses

Tropical cloud forest streams are one of the most threatened and understudied ecosystems in the world. Understanding how these ecosystems function is essential for effective conservation. In this study, macroinvertebrate community composition, functional feeding group analysis, ecosystem attributes, and physicochemical parameters were used to evaluate biophysical stream conditions of 3 low-order Neotropical cloud forest streams at Reserva Las Gralarias in Mindo, Ecuador. Additionally, food web structure was analyzed via stable isotope analysis and aquatic insect emergence rate was also examined. As stream size increased from 1st to 3rd order, the macroinvertebrate communities shifted from being collector-gatherer dominated (65.2 to 29.8%, …

Antenna For Wireless Underground Communication, Mehmet Vuran, Xin Dong, David Anthony

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Systems and methods are disclosed for an underground antenna structure for radiating through a dissipative medium, the antenna structure. The antenna structure includes a dielectric substrate, a feeding structure disposed on the substrate, and one or more electrical conductors. The one or more electrical conductors are disposed on the substrate, oriented, and buried within the dissipative medium. The electrical conductors are also adapted to radiate signals at a frequency in half-space adjacent to the dissipative medium. The adaptation includes a beamwidth state for one or more of the electrical conductors based at least in part on the relative permittivity of …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Although global food demand is expected to increase 60% by 2050 compared with 2005/2007, the rise will be much greater in sub- Saharan Africa (SSA). Indeed, SSA is the region at greatest food security risk because by 2050 its population will increase 2.5-fold and demand for cereals approximately triple, whereas current levels of cereal consumption already depend on substantial imports. At issue is whether SSA can meet this vast increase in cereal demand without greater reliance on cereal imports or major expansion of agricultural area and associated biodiversity loss and greenhouse gas emissions. Recent studies indicate that the global increase …

Reef Society And The Tyranny Of Data, Robert Wintner Dec 2016

Reef Society And The Tyranny Of Data, Robert Wintner

Animal Sentience

Modern science now approaches divergent processes in many areas, including health assessments of marine eco-systems and social aspects of marine species. Scientific data have long enjoyed a reputation for objectivity but incidents of science-for-hire, data spinning/skewing and political jading are more frequent than ever. In the field of reef creature sensitivity, technical treatises can “logically” explain away what a person of average education can clearly observe on any given reef. Western medicine discounted anecdotal evidence of any cure outside the 4% margin of error until those cures demanded attention and in some cases application. Modern science must now enter an …

Shamans, Wives, Families: An Isoseño Case Considered Using Turner On Kayapo Dominance And Beauty, Kathleen B. Lowrey

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

In this essay I describe what I have seen elapse over twenty years in the lives (and sometimes deaths) of two shamans and their respective wives in Isoso, an indigenous community of Guarani-speaking people in the Bolivian Chaco. These shamans’ two different kinds of shamanic practice, their two different sorts of marriage, and the two different life-trajectories of their wives resonate with the dual nature of Isoso itself and its historical constitution. The reproduction of a hierarchical Arawakan way of life through feminine submission to a Guarani “egalitarianism” of masculine dominance has been, I suspect, a dynamic of long standing …

Illusion And Value, Or Marcel Mauss On Alienability And Inalienability, Marcos Lanna Dec 2016

Illusion And Value, Or Marcel Mauss On Alienability And Inalienability, Marcos Lanna

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This article reexamines Marcel Mauss’s The Gift and suggests that a certain degree not only of alienability and inalienability but also of illusion is a condition for communication and social organization. Even if there is not an explicit concept of illusion in Mauss’s works, the paper points out that it is present in those of Claude Lévi-Strauss, and that both Mauss’ and Lévi-Strauss’ perspectives can be fruitfully contrasted to Karl Marx’s theory of alienation. Starting from Mauss, this paper offers an exploration of logical and historical continuities between the notions of the gift and of commodities, arguing that they are …
