Lab-On-A-Chip Nucleic-Acid Analysis Towards Point-Of-Care Applications, Varun Lingaiah Kopparthy Oct 2016

Lab-On-A-Chip Nucleic-Acid Analysis Towards Point-Of-Care Applications, Varun Lingaiah Kopparthy

Doctoral Dissertations

Recent infectious disease outbreaks, such as Ebola in 2013, highlight the need for fast and accurate diagnostic tools to combat the global spread of the disease. Detection and identification of the disease-causing viruses and bacteria at the genetic level is required for accurate diagnosis of the disease. Nucleic acid analysis systems have shown promise in identifying diseases such as HIV, anthrax, and Ebola in the past. Conventional nucleic acid analysis systems are still time consuming, and are not suitable for point-ofcare applications. Miniaturized nucleic acid systems has shown great promise for rapid analysis, but they have not been commercialized due …

Oceanic Top-Down Trophic Cascades And The Link To Anthropogenic Effects, Amanda Gangwish Oct 2016

Oceanic Top-Down Trophic Cascades And The Link To Anthropogenic Effects, Amanda Gangwish

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

As the human population continues to grow, it has become obvious that we are changing Earth’s ecosystems. These anthropogenic effects can create top-down trophic cascades throughout much of the Earth’s ecosystems – including the oceans. The oceans and the species that reside there are of extreme importance to the human population because they provide food and are sources of income for much of the world. Due to this importance, there has been a growing interest in researching the anthropogenic effects on the oceans and their species. The purpose of this review is to examine the current understanding of some major …

Cux2-Positive Radial Glial Cells Generate Diverse Subtypes Of Neocortical Projection Neurons And Macroglia, Ton Dan Nguyen Oct 2016

Cux2-Positive Radial Glial Cells Generate Diverse Subtypes Of Neocortical Projection Neurons And Macroglia, Ton Dan Nguyen

Master's Theses

The mammalian neocortex is 6-layered structure that develops in an “inside-out” manner, with cells of the deep layers (Layers 5-6) born first. Cells of the superficial outer layers (Layers 2-4) are generated subsequently and must migrate past older born cells to their final laminar position. Pioneering transplant studies suggested a progressive lineage restriction model, which posits that early neural stem cells (or radial glial cells, RGCs) are multipotent and sequentially generate different types of cortical neurons based on birthdate. Recently published work from Franco et al. (2012) argues against this paradigm, and proposes the existence of a subclass of neural …

Optimization Of The Bowtie Gap Geometry For A Maximum Electric Field Enhancement, Tsenguun Byambadorj Oct 2016

Optimization Of The Bowtie Gap Geometry For A Maximum Electric Field Enhancement, Tsenguun Byambadorj

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Optimization of the geometry of a metallic bowtie gap at radio frequency is presented in this thesis. Since the design and fabrication of a plasmonic device (nanogap) at nanoscale is challenging, the results of this study can be used to estimate the best design parameters for nanogap structure. The geometry of the bowtie gap including gap size, tip width, metal thickness, and tip angle are investigated at macroscale to find the maximum electric field enhancement across the gap. This thesis focuses on the simulation portion of a work that consists of experimental and simulation platforms. The simulation platform is created …

Role Of Humor In Emotion Regulation: Differential Effects Of Adaptive And Maladaptive Forms Of Humor, Lindsay Mathews Sep 2016

Role Of Humor In Emotion Regulation: Differential Effects Of Adaptive And Maladaptive Forms Of Humor, Lindsay Mathews

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Humor is widely believed to be an adaptive method of regulating emotions; however, the empirical literature remains inconclusive. One potential explanation for inconsistent results is that humor may be a multidimensional construct. Correlational research suggests that “adaptive” humor styles (Self-Enhancing and Affiliative) are more beneficial than “maladaptive” humor styles (Self-Defeating and Aggressive). The current study examined the effects of humor styles on positive and negative emotion in a sample of 146 young adults. In Part I of the study, participants were 1) randomly assigned to three conditions (adaptive humor, maladaptive humor, and distraction), 2) instructed to write about life events …

Red Flour Beetle, Tribolium Castaneum, Development On Rice Fractions And Oviposition Preference, Brook A. Hale Sep 2016

Red Flour Beetle, Tribolium Castaneum, Development On Rice Fractions And Oviposition Preference, Brook A. Hale

Student Theses and Dissertations

The red flour beetle (RFB), Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), is a stored-product insect commonly found in rice mills. To understand how RFBs develop on different types of rice fractions occurring in a rice mill, I conducted three studies. I examined egg to adult development on nine rice fractions (rough rice, rice hulls, paddy rice dust, brown rice, rice bran, milled broken kernels, milled whole kernels, milled rice dust and rice flour) and identified brown rice, bran, milled kernels and rice flour were best for development. A second study examined neonate adult development using rice fractions and temperature as variables and found …

Conspecific Pollen On Insects Visiting Female Flowers On The Oak Parasite Phoradendron Coryae (Viscaceae), William Wiesenborn Sep 2016

Conspecific Pollen On Insects Visiting Female Flowers On The Oak Parasite Phoradendron Coryae (Viscaceae), William Wiesenborn

Western North American Naturalist

Phoradendron coryae (Viscaceae) is a dioecious, parasitic plant on oak trees and shrubs in Quercus (Fagaceae), and it occurs from Arizona to Texas and into northern Mexico. The species produces minute spherical flowers during summer. Dioecious flowering requires pollinating insects to carry pollen from male to female plants. I investigated the pollination of P. coryae parasitizing Quercus turbinella shrubs at 3 sites at different elevations in the Cerbat Mountains of northwestern Arizona during August–September 2015. I examined pollen from male flowers, aspirated insects landing on female flowers, and counted conspecific pollen grains carried by insects. The tricolpate pollen of P. …

Baghdad Science Journal

In this work, a series of new Nucleoside analogues (D-galactopyranose linked to oxepanebenzimidazole moiety) was synthesized via multisteps synthesis. The first step involved preparation of two benzimidazoles 2-styrylbenzimidazole and 2-(phenyl ethynyl) benzimidazole via reaction of phenylenediamine with cinnamic acid or β-phenyl propiolic acid. Electrophilic addition of the prepared benzimidazoles by three anhydrides in the second step afforded (4-6) and (14-16) which in turn were treated with 1,2,3,4-di-O-isopropylidene galactopyranose in the third step to afford a series of the desirable protected nucleoside analogues (7-9) ,(17-19)which after hydrolysis in methanolic sodium methoxidein the fourth step afforded the free nucleoside analogues (10-12) and …

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

We introduce and study general mathematical properties of a new generator of continuous distributions with two extra parameters called the Another generalized transmuted family of distributions. We present some special models. We investigate the asymptotes and shapes. The new density function can be expressed as a linear combination of exponentiated densities based on the same baseline distribution. We obtain explicit expressions for the ordinary and incomplete moments and generating functions, Bonferroni and Lorenz curves, asymptotic distribution of the extreme values, Shannon and Renyi entropies and order statistics, which hold for any baseline model, certain characterisations are presented. Further, we …

Structural And Dynamic Analysis Of Wild And Splice Variants Human Μ-Opiod Receptors In Complex With Morphine And Ibntxa And Human Topoisomerase Ii Alpha Mutational Basis Of Amsacrine Resistance, Safaa Sader

Theses and Dissertations

Morphine prescribing is limited by its high addiction tendency and other serious effects. Recent animal’s biological studies on Mu 6TM splice variants, which mainly include G1, G2 and Mu3, supported a high safety and potency profiles of IBNtxA as potential alternative of Morphine. Nevertheless, there is no high-resolution structures of these 6TM variants, and the detailed structural features and dynamic characteristics of these splice variants remain elusive. We applied homology modeling and MD simulation to probe the structural, dynamic and ligand binding differences between the wild type (7TM) and two major truncated 6TM variants (G1 and G2). MD results underscored …

Antimicrobial Resistance In Saudi Arabia: An Urgent Call For An Immediate Action, Hosam M. Zowawi Sep 2016

Antimicrobial Resistance In Saudi Arabia: An Urgent Call For An Immediate Action, Hosam M. Zowawi

Saudi Medical Journal

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is increasingly being highlighted as an urgent public and animal health issue worldwide. This issue is well demonstrated in bacteria that are resistant to last-line antibiotics, suggesting a future with untreatable infections. International agencies have suggested combating strategies against AMR. Saudi Arabia has several challenges that can stimulate the emergence and spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria. Tackling these challenges need efforts from multiple sectors to successfully control the spread and emergence of AMR in the country. Actions should include active surveillance to monitor the emergence and spread of AMR. Infection prevention and control precautions should also be optimized …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This crowdsourced project introduces a collaborative approach to improving the reproducibility of scientific research, in which findings are replicated in qualified independent laboratories before (rather than after) they are published. Our goal is to establish a non-adversarial replication process with highly informative final results. To illustrate the Pre-Publication Independent Replication (PPIR) approach, 25 research groups conducted replications of all ten moral judgment effects which the last author and his collaborators had “in the pipeline” as of August 2014. Six findings replicated according to all replication criteria, one finding replicated but with a significantly smaller effect size than the original, one …

A Simplified Direct Lipid Mixing Lipoplex Preparation: Comparison Of Liposomal-, Dimethylsulfoxide-, And Ethanol-Based Methods, Joseph Meisel, George Gokel Sep 2016

A Simplified Direct Lipid Mixing Lipoplex Preparation: Comparison Of Liposomal-, Dimethylsulfoxide-, And Ethanol-Based Methods, Joseph Meisel, George Gokel

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

Established transfection methodology often uses commercial reagents, which must be formed into liposomes in a sequence of about half a dozen steps. The simplified method reported here is a direct lipid mixing approach that requires fewer steps, less manipulation, and is less time-consuming. Results are comparable to those obtained with more commonly used methods, as judged by a variety of analytical techniques and by comparisons of transfection results. The method reported here may be applied to non-liposome-forming compounds, thereby greatly expanding the range of structures that can be tested for transfection ability.

Synthesis Of Simplified Ym-254890 Analogs, Derek Thomas Rensing Aug 2016

Synthesis Of Simplified Ym-254890 Analogs, Derek Thomas Rensing

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

G Protein Coupled Receptors (GPCR’s) are responsible for a multitude of physiological, cellular, and disease processes. GPCR’s signal through non-receptor based heterotrimeric G proteins and since G proteins effectively mediate GPCR signal transduction they are attractive therapeutic targets. However, little is known about the signaling pathways associated with individual G proteins. For this reason, there is intense interest in the development of chemical probes that can help identify the downstream biochemistry of individual G proteins. One small molecule natural product that shows promise along these lines is YM-254890 (YM). YM has been shown to specifically and potently inhibit the α subunit …

The Role Of Epidermal Enhancer 923 In The Chromatin Architecture And Transcriptional Regulation Of The Epidermal Differentiation Complex, Inez Oh Aug 2016

The Role Of Epidermal Enhancer 923 In The Chromatin Architecture And Transcriptional Regulation Of The Epidermal Differentiation Complex, Inez Oh

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The epidermis covers the surface of the skin and provides a functional barrier across the entire body. Epidermal cells or keratinocytes proliferate in the innermost basal layer and migrate upwards into the suprabasal spinous and granular layers as they differentiate, and finally into the terminally differentiated outermost stratum corneum. Keratinocytes undergoing terminal differentiation are marked by tissue-specific concomitant expression of genes encoded in the Epidermal Differentiation Complex (EDC) locus. The EDC genes are organized into four gene families - S100, Sprr, Lce, and Flg-like, which are coordinately expressed upon activation of the terminal differentiation program in keratinocytes. The molecular mechanisms …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Amphiphiles For Mammalian Cell Transfection And Antimicrobial Activity, Joseph William Meisel Aug 2016

Synthesis And Characterization Of Amphiphiles For Mammalian Cell Transfection And Antimicrobial Activity, Joseph William Meisel

Dissertations

Amphiphiles are molecules that contain both water-soluble and water-insoluble components. The dual nature of these molecules engenders remarkable properties including the ability to self-assemble into ordered structures. Cell membranes are composed of amphiphilic phospholipids that organize into a bilayer motif. Synthetic amphiphiles can interact with natural membranes and influence the transport of molecules across the cell membrane. The work elaborated in this report employs amphiphiles to co-assemble with DNA and transport the genetic material across cell membranes. First, a simplified method for interacting DNA with amphiphiles was developed. Second, a series of known ion-transporting compounds were assayed for their interaction …

Headwaters

Saint John’s is a “landscape paradise” in central Minnesota. Although no complete checklist of vegetation exists for the campus, various surveys reveal a diverse flora. This floral wealth is the result of several terrestrial biomes converging on campus — prairie, savanna, deciduous forest, and coniferous forest — as well as diverse aquatic habitats including both lakes and wetlands. A 56-acre restored prairie at the entrance of Saint John’s is dominated by big bluestem and little bluestem. A savanna has been restored to the north and east of the Gemini Lakes and is characterized by bur oaks scattered among prairie grasses …

Error Resilient Video Coding Using Bitstream Syntax And Iterative Microscopy Image Segmentation, Neeraj Jayant Gadgil Aug 2016

Error Resilient Video Coding Using Bitstream Syntax And Iterative Microscopy Image Segmentation, Neeraj Jayant Gadgil

Open Access Dissertations

There has been a dramatic increase in the amount of video traffic over the Internet in past several years. For applications like real-time video streaming and video conferencing, retransmission of lost packets is often not permitted. Popular video coding standards such as H.26x and VPx make use of spatial-temporal correlations for compression, typically making compressed bitstreams vulnerable to errors. We propose several adaptive spatial-temporal error concealment approaches for subsampling-based multiple description video coding. These adaptive methods are based on motion and mode information extracted from the H.26x video bitstreams. We also present an error resilience method using data duplication in …
