Dogging Darwin: America's Revolt Against The Teaching Of Evolution, J. Herbie Difonzo
Dogging Darwin: America's Revolt Against The Teaching Of Evolution, J. Herbie Difonzo
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
More than four in ten Americans believe that God created humans in their present form 10,000 years ago. American antagonism toward the teaching of evolution is deeply rooted in fundamentalist radition and an aversion to intellectualism. These forces have combined to demonize Charles Darwin to such an extent that sectarian-based legal and political attacks on evolution show no signs of abating. Darwin's day in court began in 1925 with the famous Scopes Monkey Trial. It continued into the 21' century with Kitzmiller v. Dover Area Schools. Throughout, the core creationist agenda has remained the same, although an evolution in labeling …

Methods For Measuring Individually Experienced Temperature And Food Intake In Controlled Thermal Environments, Molly Bernhard
Methods For Measuring Individually Experienced Temperature And Food Intake In Controlled Thermal Environments, Molly Bernhard
All ETDs from UAB
The three studies to be presented assess individual-level heat exposure in free-living urban and rural environments and assess food intake in randomized controlled trials in a 2-hour exposure, and a 7-hour crossover heat exposure. The first interest was broad: examining heat exposure and its relation to potential health outcomes. To examine whether heat exposure could be measured in free-living organisms, a light and temperature monitoring device was repurposed and used in a pilot study of individual-level heat exposure in urban and rural community members. Differences between the current and most commonly accepted way of estimating heat exposure, weather station datasets, …

The Impact Of Imago Dei On Thinking About Portrait Photography, Neil Craigan
The Impact Of Imago Dei On Thinking About Portrait Photography, Neil Craigan
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The problem this project addressed was the relationship between the imago Dei and the work of photographers in the field of portrait photography. This created a strong vocational emphasis for the project in light of which the researcher explored the theological and biblical data on the imago Dei, examined the connection between being an image bearer and an image creator of the image bearer, discussed the nature of photography, developing a philosophy and broad understanding of the portrait and the value people attach to it. The field research was qualitative in its approach and professional photographers were interviewed regarding their …
Book Review Of Christine Sleeter’S White Bread: Weaving Cultural Past Into The Present, James C. Jupp
Book Review Of Christine Sleeter’S White Bread: Weaving Cultural Past Into The Present, James C. Jupp
National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal
This is a book review of Christine Sleeter’s new novel White Bread: Weaving Cultural Past into the Present. This review extolls White Bread as a significant contribution that aids in White teachers’ race-cognizance and race-visible teaching. After providing necessary background on Sleeter, the review situates White Bread as reflective of four key dimensions of her critical multicultural research. Importantly, Sleeter’s fictionalized representations in the novel show what committed and effective teachers actually do when teaching across race, culture, class, language, and other differences in public school classrooms. Overall, the review recommends White Bread as a “must read” for professional …

"Their Shadows Still Walk With Us": Mapping A Decolonial Cartography Of Struggle With Ingrid Washinawatok El-Issa, Sandra Álvarez
Political Science Faculty Articles and Research
This paper maps a cartography of struggle to document the dynamic, living legacy of Menominee leader Ingrid Washinawatok El-Issa and her contribution to the decolonial possibilities of transnational Indigenous feminism. I propose that mapping a cartography of struggle is a useful way for movements to consider how the past informs the present and future possibilities of resistance and decoloniality.

Psychological Capital As A Mediator Between Team Cohesion And Productivity, Robert John Cesaro
Psychological Capital As A Mediator Between Team Cohesion And Productivity, Robert John Cesaro
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Organizations attempting to optimize productivity are seeking new ways to develop psychological capital in teams. The researcher conducted a quantitative study to determine whether team cohesion, as assessed by the Revised Group Environment Questionnaire (RGEQ), impacts team productivity, as assessed by the Performance Measurement Team (PMT) Manufacturing Resource System (MRS); whether this relationship can be attributed to a team's level of psychological capital, as assessed by the Psychological Capital Questionnaire (PCQ-12); and whether psychological capital mediates the relationship between team cohesion and team productivity. Forty-five PMTs in a large U.S. defense manufacturing organization were surveyed using the PCQ-12 and the …

Implementation Of International Financial Reporting Standards By Listed Companies In Nigeria, Emmanuel Inalegwu Ogbenjuwa
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This study is on implementation of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) by reporting entities in Nigeria. Since Nigeria adopted IFRS in 2010, managers of reporting entities have been confronted with organizational changes both in the structures and processes of financial reporting. Previous studies have not assessed the claims that adopting IFRS improves the quality of financial reports and managerial efficiency. This study evaluated the assertion that IFRS adoption impacts the quality of financial reports, operational costs, and operational efficiencies of management. The theoretical frameworks which undergirded the study were theories of organizational behaviors and attitudinal change. Data were collected via …
Cultural Sovereignty And Cultural Violence: Native American Artists And The Dunn Studio, 1932-1962, Pamela Krch
Cultural Sovereignty And Cultural Violence: Native American Artists And The Dunn Studio, 1932-1962, Pamela Krch
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The early twentieth century engendered a period of profound change within the United States as industrialization, post-World War I miasma, and vigorous imperialism transformed the nation. The Southwest's Santa Fe provided a haven for the influx of White scientists, affluent socialites, and artists who sought authenticity through reinvention. Lighting upon the neighboring Indian communities, White elites soon appropriated Native culture, production, and imagery, seeing these as sources for nationalism, commodification, and as outlets for reformist aims. Art educator Dorothy Dunn stands as exemplary of the latter, as she fervently believed that the new genre of Native American easel art answered …
The Persistent Fear Of Crime In A Safe Metropolitan Area: The Continual Impact Of Social Disorganization, Guillermo Rivas
The Persistent Fear Of Crime In A Safe Metropolitan Area: The Continual Impact Of Social Disorganization, Guillermo Rivas
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
While the association between physical and social disorder on crime have been established (Skogan, 1990), it is less clear how they influence fear of crime. Fear of crime is important to consider given that is can decrease both physical and mental health (Gee & Payne-Sturges, 2004). Utilizing data based on a randomly selected household survey in El Paso County, Texas (N= 1,070) I seek to examine the influence of physical and social disorders and social cohesion on fear of crime. OLS linear regression results illustrate the persistent impact of physical and social disorders regardless of neighborhood characteristics of poverty and …
Becoming Resilient: A Positive Deviance Inquiry Into The Resilience Of Mexican Immigrant Women, Maria Del Carmen Sajquim De Torres
Becoming Resilient: A Positive Deviance Inquiry Into The Resilience Of Mexican Immigrant Women, Maria Del Carmen Sajquim De Torres
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
ABSTRACT
The United States has approximately 12 million Mexican-born immigrants, almost half of which are female (Gonzalez-Barrera & Lopez, 2013). Research has determined that Mexican immigrants have the best level of mental health when compared to other ethnic groups in the U.S. (Alegria et al., 2008; Horevitz & Organista, 2012). Adverse living conditions resulting from immigration and time spent in the U.S. are believed to cause the loss of this advantage. The potential strengths or assets contributing to advantageous levels of mental health in Mexican-born immigrants have not been fully identified in research.
This exploratory and descriptive inquiry used an …

Rewriting, Recapturing, Reenvisioning: Writing Assessment Revisited In The Hermeneutic Sphere, Judith Ann Fourzan
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This Dissertation explores the use of hermeneutics in reconsidering the role of writing assessment in composition. The traditional view of writing assessment is negative. In order to change this traditional view and enable composition faculty to utilize writing assessment and a valuable and necessary tool, a hermeneutic sphere offers the best framework upon which to recast writing assessment as part of composition and writing. A hermeneutic sphere is an interpretive methodology that allows for the investigation of any and all aspects of the subject at hand - in this case, writing assessment. The hermeneutic sphere works much like a heuristic …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The Rio Grande in the El Paso, Texas, U.S./Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, Valley has a long history of human use from prehistoric to modern times. Formal irrigation began in the 1600s, mainly for viticulture, changing to cotton and pecans in the 1900s. The Rio Grande was subject to bed shifting and flooding that, after 1848, affected the location of the international boundary. During the Great Depression the U.S. and Mexican governments sponsored conservation projects to provide jobs and increase agricultural production. The 1933 “Convention - Rectification of the Rio Grande” was the culmination of interstate and bi-national agreements to divide Rio …
An Environmental Justice Examination Of Hispanic Immigrants' Flood Hazard Exposure And Vulnerability In The Miami And Houston Metro Areas, Alejandra Maldonado
An Environmental Justice Examination Of Hispanic Immigrants' Flood Hazard Exposure And Vulnerability In The Miami And Houston Metro Areas, Alejandra Maldonado
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Research reveals that disasters are particularly debilitating for racial/ethnic minorities. However, prior studies of racial/ethnic dimensions of disaster vulnerability have lumped people together in broad categories (e.g. Hispanic) without regard for substantial within-group heterogeneity. As a result, aspects of disaster vulnerability experienced by Hispanic immigrants (distinguished from US-born Hispanics) have been concealed. Using survey data from 1,283 adult householders in the Houston and Miami Metropolitan Statistical Areas and follow-up interview data from a subset of survey respondents, this Thesis addresses that limitation by examining whether Hispanic immigrants experience heightened flood risk relative to other social groups. The Thesis is comprised …
A Theory Of Animal Oppression, Sharon Stephania Murillo
A Theory Of Animal Oppression, Sharon Stephania Murillo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
American society is characterized by indifference toward the notion of animal rights. Americans are unaware or often ignore the fact that “more than 9,000,000 farm animals die each year in the U.S. and exceeds 70 billion globally.” More than 6,000,000 animals die every hour, and die every second in slaughterhouses around the world. These numbers reflect the reality of American meat consumption. In this thesis, I will argue that individuals often ignore the impact of animal exploitation and as the “oppressors”, such that we do not even realize that we are oppressing animals and committing an injustice. We have the false …

The Afterlife Views And The Use Of The Tanakh In Support Of The Resurrection Concept In The Literature Of Second Temple Period Judaism: The Apocrypha And The Pseudepigrapha, Jan A. Sigvartsen
Dissertations
The literature of Second Temple Period Judaism indicates there was an increased interest in and speculation about the fate of the righteous and the wicked following their physical death. This period saw the birth of multiple Jewish sects and also multiple views of the afterlife. This study will outline the numerous afterlife views and will analyse the resurrection passages appearing in the Apocrypha and the Pseudepigrapha to gain a comprehensive overview of the texts used from the TaNaKh in support of these various resurrection beliefs. This study also provides a better understanding of how the TaNaKh was read by differing …
Dominant Discourses And Language Socialization In The Literacy Practices Of A Spanish-Speaking Church, Katherine Christoffersen
Dominant Discourses And Language Socialization In The Literacy Practices Of A Spanish-Speaking Church, Katherine Christoffersen
Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications
Over the years, research has investigated language in communities, schools and homes, community programs and to a lesser degree research investigates language use in religious communities. In particular, there is a lack of research on religious language and literacy practices in Hispanic communities, especially those in the United States, although incipient work has revealed the importance of religious literacy among women Mexican immigrants (Farr, 2000) and for the socialization of children into a Mexican identity (Baquedano-López, 1997). Given the hostile local sociopolitical environment of Spanish in the state of Arizona in the Southwestern United States, the church is one of …

This year-long ethnographic case study seeks to contribute to the body of literature on minoritized students' transitions from high school to college by drawing on sociocultural theories of literacies and identities to examine seven bilingual Latino/a students' academic trajectories from the spring semester of their senior year in high school through the fall semester of their first year in college. Specifically, this study explores how Latino/a youth's identities and academic aspirations were shaped by literacy practices across spaces - out-of-school, at a high school, and in college classrooms - over the course of a year. The study was conduct in …
A Theology Of Missional Leadership In The Book Of Revelation, Gyeongchun Choi
A Theology Of Missional Leadership In The Book Of Revelation, Gyeongchun Choi
Dissertations
Problem
Leadership styles and the attendant behavior of mission practitioners and church administrators too often demonstrate leadership attitudes and practices that reflect cultural norms while violating biblical norms. There is both historical and contemporary evidence of a predictable migration from leadership as service to leadership as control—such as autocracy, coercion, self-ascendancy, and dominance. These problems are found in leadership practices primarily informed by cultural norms apart from God’s Word. These norms vary widely and may even be practiced within the faith community thus violating biblical principles. This reality creates an urgent need for the application of biblical principles that transcend …
An Analysis Of Adventist Mission Methods In Brazil In Relationship To A Christian Movement Ethos, Marcelo Eduardo Da Costa Dias
An Analysis Of Adventist Mission Methods In Brazil In Relationship To A Christian Movement Ethos, Marcelo Eduardo Da Costa Dias
Dissertations
In a little over 100 years, the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Brazil has grown to a membership of 1,447,470 (December 2013), becoming the country with the second highest total number of Adventists in the world. Very little academic research has been done to study or analyze the growth and development of the Adventist church in Brazil. In terms of its mission methods, what is the Christian movement ethos that fostered this development in Brazil? How can it continue to foster Adventist church growth in Brazil in spite of contextual changes?
As a missiological study that reflects typical interdisciplinarity crossing traditional …
