What Happens In The Shadows: Racial Hierarchy And The Policing Of People Of Color, Nanditha Vinod Apr 2025

What Happens In The Shadows: Racial Hierarchy And The Policing Of People Of Color, Nanditha Vinod

English and Creative Writing Presentations

In this presentation, I examine the relationship between methods used in graphic memoirs by illustrators to depict and critique political and social inequalities. I specifically analyze the graphic memoir Guantanamo Kid by Alexandre Franc and Jérôme Tubiana, which depicts the brutal experience of Mohammed El-Gharani, who was falsely imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay as a child. I argue that the illustrators manipulate the composition of lights and shadows to emphasize racial hierarchy and the inherent power imbalance between people of color and white bodies that severely restrict agency. The usage of lights and shadows, often overlooked in visual arts, heightens the …

254 - “Ship Fever”: Contextualizing Epidemic Typhus In Mid-19th Century New York, Audrey Ryan

GREAT Day Posters

Epidemic typhus is a disease caused by the bacteria R. prowazekii, and spread through the vector of human body lice. Historically, typhus outbreaks have been associated with “social maladies”: poverty, war, natural disasters, and other factors that bring about the overcrowded and unhygienic living conditions where typhus spreads most easily. In a study I conducted last year, I learned that between 1847 and 1850, 17.5% of the 169 adult deaths in the Monroe County Poorhouse were attributed to typhus (also called “ship fever”). In a sample of 205 people buried in Mount Hope Cemetery (Rochester's general population) during the same …

Original Sin Or The Lack Thereof Rousseau’S Philosophical Anthropology, Jane V. Carney Apr 2025

Original Sin Or The Lack Thereof Rousseau’S Philosophical Anthropology, Jane V. Carney

Honors Theses

Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s philosophical anthropology finds its roots in deeply theological territory. At the heart of his philosophy is the belief that man is essentially good but becomes corrupted by the influences of society. His strong belief in the innate goodness of humanity therefore led him to question Christian doctrines that appear to contradict that natural goodness. This then led him to object to the doctrine of original sin. Rousseau’s interpretation of original sin, and his subsequent rejection of it, shaped his broader political and philosophical thought, and is thus a vital piece of understanding Rousseau’s broader normative theory. Because he …

Analysis Of Skeletal Trauma: Examining Current And Potential, Maia Stevenson Apr 2025

Analysis Of Skeletal Trauma: Examining Current And Potential, Maia Stevenson

D.U.Quark

Skeletal trauma is an important component of death investigations which is often discovered through postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) scanning. The analysis of skeletal trauma is a key process in the medicolegal field which could provide information on the cause and manner of death of the individual. Though PMCT provides useful imaging data for discovery, there is a lack of reliable technological tools for analyzation of such data. More definitive skeletal reconstruction tools and injury mechanism categorization tools would increase the efficiency of the post-mortem examination process. This review observes the current methods of discovering skeletal trauma through PMCT and surveys …

013 - The Vitale Collection, Christian Chaffee, Tia Blossomgame, Aiden Lalone, Abigail Cornelius

GREAT Day Posters

This poster is an analysis of an archaeological collection by the late amateur archaeologist Jim Vitale, which was donated by his son, Sebastian Vitale. Jim Vitale was an anthropology graduate from SUNY Geneseo, studying archaeology under Dr. Wendel Rhodes. Vitale became an avid collector after college, focusing his attention on Native American history prior to European contact. He conducted extensive surveys and excavations in and around the Genesee Valley. His finding of Native American artifacts, such as projectile points and pottery, helps tell the story of who lived in these areas before Europeans took them over. After his passing, Vitale’s …

244 - Trends And Practices Relating To Maternal Mortality Rates In 19th And Early 20th Century Rochester, New York, Shannon Lacy

GREAT Day Posters

This study explores the incidence and causes of maternal mortality in 19th century and early 20th century Rochester. Several practices, including the emergence of antiseptics and obstetrics, have reduced maternal mortality rates since the end of the 19th century. At that time, the development of germ theory led to the discovery of the cause of puerperal fever, a common cause of maternal deaths first addressed by Semmelweis in the 1840s. Although the overall prevalence of sepsis-related post-birth mortality has decreased, we are now seeing how the medicalization of birth comes with its own complications, including hemorrhage and post-intervention infection. In …

267 - An Investigation Of The Impact On Human Well-Being By Flooding In Delaware, Daniela Paolino

GREAT Day Posters

Flooding causes obvious physical destruction, but if the visible effects of destruction are so great, how much greater are the invisible? Looking at the history and preexisting effects of flooding on the environment, and using them to reveal potential long-term physical damages helps to make known its potential consequences on society. Delaware is a prime subject to examine; due to its long history of flooding, water has progressively consumed coastal lands during record-breaking coastal floods that are projected only to increase in magnitude. This review attempts to elucidate how social well-being in Delaware is being impacted by flooding and what …

God’S Got Me:The Intersection Of Faith And Mental Healing, Bre'anna Coleman Apr 2025

God’S Got Me:The Intersection Of Faith And Mental Healing, Bre'anna Coleman

Honors Theses

Due to the lack of healthcare accessibility and other factors within the Mississippi Delta, faith and the church is often utilized within African American communities in the area as a form of mental wellness. The Intersection of Faith and Mental Healing was a photo voice methodology project that highlighted how faith and mental healing intersect and impact African Americans within the Mississippi Delta. Through three prompts, six participants discussed mental health and how faith, location, and their identities shaped their views of mental wellness. Five participants were male with one female participant. Their ages ranged from eighteen to sixty five …

Shifting Social Identities In The Iron Iia: A Household Perspective From Tel Gezer, Charissa D. Wilson Apr 2025

Shifting Social Identities In The Iron Iia: A Household Perspective From Tel Gezer, Charissa D. Wilson

Doctoral Dissertations

Recent archaeological excavations have gathered a significant amount of data from which to view the regionality that still existed in the Jezreel Valley, the Yarkon Basin and at several Shephelah sites in the Iron Age IIA as a continuation of what has been termed “Canaanite enclaves” from the previous period. It had previously been assumed that Canaanite social traditions had diminished by the 10th century B.C. or had fallen by the wayside due to new economic and political systems from emerging states in the southern Levant. Tel Gezer, a once powerful Canaanite stronghold, was a city on the edge of …

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

The need for ethical guidelines that support and empower researchers who aim to enhance the societal impact of research has become critical. Recognizing the growing emphasis on research impact by governments and funding bodies worldwide, this article investigates the often overlooked ethical dimensions of generating and evaluating research impact. We focus on ethical issues and practices that are specific to the process of intentionally working to develop societal impacts from research. We highlight the complexities and ethical dilemmas encountered when researchers engage with non-academic groups, such as policymakers, industries, and local communities. Through a combination of literature review and insights …

Demography Of Bluff View Cemetery Vermillion, Sd, Ellie E. Schwartz Apr 2025

Demography Of Bluff View Cemetery Vermillion, Sd, Ellie E. Schwartz

Honors Thesis

Cemeteries offer accessible, rich data for research on demographic reconstruction of past populations. Gravestones can give vital information such as date of birth, date of death, sex/gender, occupation, religious affiliation, and, implicitly, social and cultural values of the community at large (Dethlefsen and Deetz, 1966; Sattenspiel and Stoops, 2010). One of the drawbacks of cemetery data are that they more often than not do not provide details of the cause of death for an individual or in some rare occasions cause of death is on the gravestones (e.g., colonial graves during the tuberculosis outbreak in New England would often list …

Exploring Occupational Identity And Cultural Belongingness Of Chinese Transracial Intercountry Adoptees: A Qualitative Study, Kenzie Butts, Karen Park Apr 2025

Exploring Occupational Identity And Cultural Belongingness Of Chinese Transracial Intercountry Adoptees: A Qualitative Study, Kenzie Butts, Karen Park

Spring 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium

Chinese transracial intercountry adoptees may experience discrimination, microaggressions, and stereotyping by not feeling like they fit in with White American or traditional Chinese cultures due to an upbringing of a different race and ethnicity. These barriers may result in a lack of engagement in cultural experiences further impacting their sense of identity and cultural belongingness. A qualitative phenomenological research approach was used to understand how seven Chinese transracial adoptees identity development and sense of cultural belongingness relate to their occupational participation during their early adulthood years. Data was collected through a 45-minute, audio-recorded virtual semi-structured interview via Microsoft Teams and …

Hieronymus Bosch’S Purgatory In In Bruges, Yalet Yanar Apr 2025

Hieronymus Bosch’S Purgatory In In Bruges, Yalet Yanar

The Agora

In this paper I analyze the critically acclaimed film _In Bruges_, directed by Martin McDonagh, arguing that the film transforms the town of Bruges into a narrative embodiment of the Purgatory depicted in Hieronymus Bosch’s medieval paintings. The Boschian transformation is achieved through the use of medieval symbolism, themes of sin, repentance, and the afterlife, as well as visual references to Bosch’s characters, scenes, and his Last Judgement triptych in Bruges.

The Overmedicalization Of The Female Orgasm And The Orgasm Gap, Mackenzie Dybvik Apr 2025

The Overmedicalization Of The Female Orgasm And The Orgasm Gap, Mackenzie Dybvik

The Agora

This paper, as the title suggests, dives into the overmedicalization of the female orgasm, and subsequently, the orgasm gap. It touches on five commonly believed reasons for the orgasm gap– women’s orgasm difficulty, biology, men’s fault, interpersonal communication issues, and sociocultural influence– and it links all of them to overmedicalization. It describes overmedicalization as the actual issue that needs to be resolved, and thus proposes a solution of increased and more comprehensive sexual health. It argues that better sexual health will help tackle overmedicalization as both clinicians and citizens become more aware of how to fight overmedicalization. It concludes by …

Studying Cultural Change With Transhistorical Semantic Directions, Travis Daichi Ashby Apr 2025

Studying Cultural Change With Transhistorical Semantic Directions, Travis Daichi Ashby

Theses and Dissertations

This study advances the use of diachronic word embeddings in cultural sociology, contributing both methodologically and substantively. Methodologically, it synthesizes best practices for constructing semantic directions and addresses challenges arising from diachronic embeddings, including missing data and semantic drift. Substantively, it examines historical changes in schemas and conceptual metaphors related to "processing." By analyzing the changing associations between processing-related words (e.g., "raw" and "refined") and evaluative categories like authenticity, valence, and aesthetics, the study examines whether word-level changes amongst schematically-related words indicate deeper cultural shifts at the schematic level. Findings indicate a growing association between processed states and inauthenticity, a …

The Use Of Person-Centered Language In Scientific Research Articles Focused On Psychosis, Zach Monahan, Tanner Stone, Vinay Swami, Kelly Dunn, Micah Hartwell Apr 2025

The Use Of Person-Centered Language In Scientific Research Articles Focused On Psychosis, Zach Monahan, Tanner Stone, Vinay Swami, Kelly Dunn, Micah Hartwell

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Purpose: Societal stigma of psychosis leads to delayed treatment for individuals experiencing early symptoms, for fear of being labeled “crazy” or “psychotic.” Delayed treatment can worsen the prognosis of individuals with psychosis. Proper adherence to person-centered language (PCL) guidelines can curb the widely held stigmatized preconceptions about psychotic conditions.

Methods: Our meta-epidemiological analysis began with a systematic search of literature in PubMed discussing psychosis from 2020-2022. From the 14,522 results, we randomly selected 500 articles in journals with at least 20 articles on psychosis (n = 9,775), of which 241 articles met the inclusion criteria. These papers were screened for …

(Don’T) Fight For Your Right To Party: Exploring The Educational Significance Of Trans Joy At Prom, Annaliese Devita Apr 2025

(Don’T) Fight For Your Right To Party: Exploring The Educational Significance Of Trans Joy At Prom, Annaliese Devita

International Journal of Human Rights Education

Prom, a hallmark of American adolescence, is often dismissed as a frivolous tradition, yet it holds profound significance as a space for youth identity formation, social belonging, and cultural navigation. For trans and gender-expansive youth, the stakes of participation in this rite of passage are heightened amidst escalating attacks on their existence. This essay, drawing from graduate thesis research at the University of Edinburgh, examines the historical roots of prom, its embedded cis-heteronormative structures, and how Queer Youth Proms (QYPs) function as sites of resilience, joy, and self-determination for trans youth. While QYPs offer a critical refuge, their existence underscores …

Categories Are Made To Be Broken: Uncovering Strategies And Pedagogies Of Blaqueer Resistance, Femi Higgins

International Journal of Human Rights Education

This article explores the liberatory praxis and spaces of BlaQueer (Black & Queer) and Trans communities, focusing on educational settings that promote the rights and well-being of Black LGBTQ+ people and how these BlaQueer/Trans educational projects disrupt asymmetrical citizenship and violence. The analysis of BlaQueer/Trans educational projects, ranging from ballroom houses to community-based education programs, reveals core competencies that align with human rights education (HRE) and principles of ballroom culture. These include critical thinking and analysis of power structures and embodied resistance pedagogies that interrogate identity and unequal citizenship while building power to dismantle interlocking oppressive systems. The article contends …

Indigenous Women In Southeastern War Culture, Kyra Jordan Franks Apr 2025

Indigenous Women In Southeastern War Culture, Kyra Jordan Franks

Student Theses and Dissertations

Native American history has become more present in modern day curriculums, both in secondary schools and in higher education; however, not all aspects of native society nor all participants are studied equally. Native American women in particular are often overlooked, their actions misinterpreted, and are overall difficult to find in their own history, especially when it comes to their participation in warfare. Historians frequently leave Native women out of their own history, citing the absence of women in historical records as justification; however, just because something is difficult to find does not mean that it is not there. There are …
