A Problematic Test Of The Kin Selection Hypothesis Among The Urak-Lawoi Of Ko Lipe, Thailand: Commentary On Camperio Ciani, Battaglia, And Liotta (2015), Paul L. Vasey, Doug P. Vanderlaan, Raymond Hames, Amornthep Jaidee Jan 2016

A Problematic Test Of The Kin Selection Hypothesis Among The Urak-Lawoi Of Ko Lipe, Thailand: Commentary On Camperio Ciani, Battaglia, And Liotta (2015), Paul L. Vasey, Doug P. Vanderlaan, Raymond Hames, Amornthep Jaidee

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Camperio Ciani et al. argued that the Urak-Lawoi people of Ko Lipe island live in a ‘‘traditional,’’ ‘‘subsistence primitive society’’ reminiscent of the ‘‘ancestral’’ human past and that their socio-cultural situation is ‘‘remarkably similar’’ to Samoa. On this basis, they asserted that the Ko Lipe Urak-Lawoi are an appropriate population for determining the role that kin selection played in the evolution of male androphilia. The purpose of this commentary is to outline some of our concerns with this characterization and with the statistical analyses conducted by Camperio Ciani et al. in their study of the Urak-Lawoi.

Paleoindians, Proboscideans, And Phytotoxins: Exploring The Feasibility Of Poison Hunting During The Last Glacial-Interglacial Transition, Alan J. Osborn Jan 2016

Paleoindians, Proboscideans, And Phytotoxins: Exploring The Feasibility Of Poison Hunting During The Last Glacial-Interglacial Transition, Alan J. Osborn

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Archaeologists have long envisioned direct encounters between Paleoindians and megafauna of the Last Glacial-Interglacial Transition (LGIT, 15–11.5 cal BP). Debate continues regarding the role that these Paleoindian hunters played in the extinction event(s). Archaeologists, paleontologists, and paleobiologists have proposed that Paleoindians proved to be very effective hunters who employed darts and spears tipped with razorsharp, chipped-stone projectile points. These weapons are assumed to have been capable of inflicting mortal wounds and death as a result of massive blood loss. Few archaeologists, however, have considered the possible use of hunting poisons, as well as the implications of poison use for past …

Dama Dentition: A New Tooth Eruption And Wear Method For Assessing The Age Of Fallow Deer (Dama Dama), Frazer Bowen, Ruth F. Carden, Julie Daujat, Sandrine Grouard, Holly Miller, Sophia Perdikaris, Naomi Sykes Jan 2016

Dama Dentition: A New Tooth Eruption And Wear Method For Assessing The Age Of Fallow Deer (Dama Dama), Frazer Bowen, Ruth F. Carden, Julie Daujat, Sandrine Grouard, Holly Miller, Sophia Perdikaris, Naomi Sykes

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

Reliable aging techniques for wild animals are notoriously challenging to develop because of the scarcity of sizeable collections of known-age specimens. Without such techniques it is difficult to reconstruct hunting patterns, which is a significant problem for the examination of assemblages from pre-farming cultures. This paper presents a new method, based on mandibular tooth eruption and wear, for assessing the age of fallow deer. The method was developed from a large collection (n = 156) of known-age Dama dama specimens, has been blind tested by members of the zooarchaeological community and represents a user-friendly system with the potential to …

Pacific Horizons: The Transformation Of European Perceptions Of Paradise, 1880-1900, Luke Scalone Jan 2016

Pacific Horizons: The Transformation Of European Perceptions Of Paradise, 1880-1900, Luke Scalone

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Since the publication of Bernard Smith’s European Vision in the South Pacific in the 1960s, an immense amount of literature has been produced about how European exploration in the Pacific Ocean affected explorers, national governments, elite classes, and indigenous peoples. However, there is little scholarship about how the interactions between Europeans and Pacific Islanders in the 19th century influenced the perceptions of readers on the continent. This project will fill in this gap by showing how colonial and imperial literature affected European readers’ perception of what constitutes an ideal society between 1880 and 1900. To explore these changes, I will …

“Ni De Aquí, Ni De Allá”: Garífuna Subjectivities And The Politics Of Diasporic Belonging, Paul Joseph López Oro Jan 2016

“Ni De Aquí, Ni De Allá”: Garífuna Subjectivities And The Politics Of Diasporic Belonging, Paul Joseph López Oro

Africana Studies: Faculty Publications

López Oro analyzes two census campaigns—one in New York City and one in Honduras—geared toward Garifuna populations in order to interrogate larger questions about how Garifuna populations are included, or not, within dominant discourses of Honduran multiculturalism and US Latinidad. He argues that Garifuna are a quintessentially diasporic population who disrupt common assumptions about what it means to be Honduran, Latino, and/or Black in the Americas.

An Assessment Of Recent Trade Law Developments From An Animal Law Perspective: Trade Law As The Sheep In Wolf's Clothing?, Charlotte Blattner Jan 2016

An Assessment Of Recent Trade Law Developments From An Animal Law Perspective: Trade Law As The Sheep In Wolf's Clothing?, Charlotte Blattner

Animal Law Review

Further development within the field of animal law seems to be at an impasse, lost among the potential paths presented by its traditional influences: international treaty law, domestic animal welfare regulations, and trade law. First, classical elements of global animal treaty law are limited to preservationist aspirations, insusceptible to the questions of how animals are treated or how they cope with their environment. Second, animal welfare regulation is understood as a matter confined to national territories. In cross-border dialogue, animal matters have been reduced to allegations of imperialism, which is not conducive to furthering animal interests. Third, animals are regarded …

Forging A Path For Women's Rights In Customary Law, Tamar Ezer Jan 2016

Forging A Path For Women's Rights In Customary Law, Tamar Ezer

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

Common law in Africa began as a dynamic, fluid structure that was effective for governing small, tight-knit communities. After the introduction of European colonialism, however, common law incorporated European customs, such as patriarchy and individualism. The individual and patriarchal structure solidified in many African communities and had a grossly disproportionate effect on women, whose lives were dictated by lack of property rights and self-determination. In South Africa in particular, the patriarchal structure continued into the 20th century despite a global recognition of equal rights for women. This article explores the origins of common law and suggests that many communities may …

Red-Handed Without A Defense: Avoiding Civil Forfeiture When Leasing To Lawful Marijuana Tenants, Cielo Fortin-Camacho Jan 2016

Red-Handed Without A Defense: Avoiding Civil Forfeiture When Leasing To Lawful Marijuana Tenants, Cielo Fortin-Camacho

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

Lawful marijuana tenants (“LMT”), or tenants who lease property for the purpose of operating a marijuana-related business in compliance with the applicable marijuana provisions of their state, are demanding property and offering big bucks—leaving property owners in a precarious situation. This Article discusses the problem faced by property owners wishing to lease premises to growers, processors, and sellers of marijuana in states that have adopted marijuana provisions and established regulatory frameworks. In these states, marijuana provisions do not alter the respective state’s landlord-tenant statutes, despite the various property-related requirements marijuana businesses must adhere to for licensure to operate. Licensing requirements …

“I Can’T Relate”: Refusing Identification Demands In Teaching And Learning, Ian Barnard Jan 2016

“I Can’T Relate”: Refusing Identification Demands In Teaching And Learning, Ian Barnard

English Faculty Articles and Research

In literature, composition, and other areas of English Studies, relateability can be an important tool to inscribe marginalized subjects as academic citizens. However, its larger arc reproduces ethnocentric and individualistic ideologies at the national and personal levels that foreclose the true understanding of and engagement with Otherness that defines learning. What are the particular intellectual and other challenges, pleasures, and rewards of refusing the pedagogical imperative to engage and understand through identification? I conclude the article by deploying theorists of difference to ask what it means to understand difference as difference, how this understanding might be facilitated, and what the …

Ethnography Of Parkland Students: How Do Students Judge Others Based On Their Apparel?, Lori Armstrong Jan 2016

Ethnography Of Parkland Students: How Do Students Judge Others Based On Their Apparel?, Lori Armstrong

Independent Honors Projects

In this brief ethnographic study, the student sets out to reinvestigate the findings of a previous student project focusing on Parkland student’s tendency to judge others based on their attire. Data collection for the two studies were similar: photos representing styles of dress, and participant interviews. However, this study included examples of styles of dress for men in addition to styles of dress for women. Where the first project concluded that students did not tend to judge, this student’s survey showed contradictory results, with more negative judgement being placed on the photos presenting women than those presenting men. The author …

Prehistoric Human Impact On Tree Island Lifecycles In The Florida Everglades, Traci Ardren, Justin P. Lowry, Melissa Memory, Kelin Flanagan, Alexandra Busot Jan 2016

Prehistoric Human Impact On Tree Island Lifecycles In The Florida Everglades, Traci Ardren, Justin P. Lowry, Melissa Memory, Kelin Flanagan, Alexandra Busot

United States National Park Service: Publications

The current study provides a fine-grained analysis of evidence for sustained pre-Columbian human occupation and socio-ecological interaction within Everglades National Park. Utilizing archaeological data on dietary and cultural patterns recovered from recent excavations at a prehistoric tree island site, we argue the role of ancient human populations in the formation or augmentation of tree islands should be incorporated into environmental models of the tree island lifecycle. High phosphorus levels in human waste, especially the largely organic waste of prehistoric populations, as well as other anthropogenic factors have not been adequately factored into current environmental models of tree island formation or …

Application Of Cognitive Apprenticeship Model (Ca) To Library Instruction, Elizabeth K. Tompkins Jan 2016

Application Of Cognitive Apprenticeship Model (Ca) To Library Instruction, Elizabeth K. Tompkins

Publications and Research

The cognitive apprenticeship model, which links apprenticeship-learning techniques and classroom practices, offers a flexible framework for planning and implementing library sessions. Originally developed by educators Collins, Brown, and Newman, cognitive apprenticeship illuminates the thought process of teachers and other experts while they deliver instruction in problem solving, close reading, critical thinking, or other higher order reasoning. This paper discusses how librarians can employ the cognitive apprenticeship model to collapse the thought process associated with library research into components that are comprehensible to all levels of students.

Socrates' Mission, Daniel W. Graham Jan 2016

Socrates' Mission, Daniel W. Graham

BYU Studies

Socrates is the quintessential watershed of ancient thought. He is known as the thinker who turned philosophy away from cosmological speculation to ethics and value theory. In his own time, he was hailed by Apollo’s Oracle at Delphi as the man who was wiser than all others, and he was lampooned by Aristophanes on the comic stage as a quack, a sophist, and a fraud. His followers included two of the greatest traitors Athens produced, Alcibiades and Critias, and two of the greatest thinkers and moralists, Plato and Xenophon. In the end, he was tried on charges of impiety and …

Are Petroglyphs Markers For Frontier Boundaries Or Directional To Raw Material Resources?, Howard R. Feldman, Philip Charles Laporta Jr., Talia J. Belowich

Lander College for Women - The Anna Ruth and Mark Hasten School Publications and Research

The Shawangunk, NY region is known for rich mineral resources: anomalous concentrations of quartz crystals; native silver; silver, copper and zinc sulfides; and minimal quantities of native gold. The Shawangunks also host Native American petroglyphs carved into local bedrock. Although the Shawangunks are rich in metallic ores and semiprecious minerals, the entire range is sorely deficient in chert and other raw materials used for prehistoric subsistence. Despite the lack of raw materials for subsistence needs, archaeological tools found in the area are strikingly similar in raw-material type, as well as general morphology, to quarry-extraction tools discovered in the adjacent Wallkill …
