Online Sex Slaves: The Internet's Powerful Role In Sex Trafficking, Daizchane Baker
Online Sex Slaves: The Internet's Powerful Role In Sex Trafficking, Daizchane Baker
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Sex trafficking, often referred, as "modem day slavery" is one of the fastest growing criminal enterprises on the Internet. Sex trafficking occurs when a victim, typically a female, is traded for the purpose of commercial sex. Fueled by global economic conditions and increased international mobility, the trading of human beings is expanding rapidly. Classified advertisements on the Internet and social media websites have help aid in the advancement of the industry because traffickers are hidden behind the shield of anonymity and protection known as the web. Victims are sold numerous times to multiple buyers on a daily basis. Sex trafficking …
Fluoroquinolones Vs. Dental Attrition In The Etiology Of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders, Marissa Salvia
Fluoroquinolones Vs. Dental Attrition In The Etiology Of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders, Marissa Salvia
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
This research focuses on the etiology of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJD), specifically osteoarthritis (OA) of the jaw. The population samples studied include early medieval skeletal remains from Saleux, France (n=40) and a modem population samples reported from the studies conducted by Rando and Waldron (2012), Emodi-Perlman et al. (2012), and Yadav (2011 ). When studying the etiology of OA, this research looks at the role of fluoroquinolones and dental attrition as possible factors. Fluoroquinolones are anti-inflammatory drugs that can cause rupture in the Achilles tendon; dental attrition is the wear on teeth from tooth on tooth contact. Although there has …
Continuity And Change In The History Of Scottish Juvenile Justice, Christine Kelly
Continuity And Change In The History Of Scottish Juvenile Justice, Christine Kelly
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
This paper explores the theme of continuity and change in the history of Scottish juvenile justice, drawing attention to the longer historical view which enables us to focus on the underlying continuities between nineteenth and twentieth century developments. In this context the paper presents a number of key research findings based on extensive primary research on Victorian and Edwardian Scotland. These focus on three areas: the role of reformatory and industrial schools, the operation of the early juvenile courts and the impact of new scientific discourses. The paper argues that these insights are of value in supporting an interpretation of …
Noble Freedom: The Importance Of Freedom In The Theology Of Beatrice Of Nazareth And Hadewijch, Seth Alexander
Noble Freedom: The Importance Of Freedom In The Theology Of Beatrice Of Nazareth And Hadewijch, Seth Alexander
Dissertations
The mulieres religiosae were a diverse group of women in the late twelfth and early thirteenth century who lived a variety of lifestyles. Two such mulieres are Hadewijch, a beguine, and Beatrijs of Nazareth, a Cistercian nun both outstanding thirteenth-century writers who exemplify the mystical theology characteristic of this dynamic group of women. The task of this study is to explore the writings of these two medieval authors to examine how they interpreted their experiences of union with God. To do this, I will investigate the ways in which these two particular women of the thirteenth- century Low Countries construct …
Habermas And Public Reason In The Digital Age: Technology And Deliberative Democracy, Asaf Bar-Tura
Habermas And Public Reason In The Digital Age: Technology And Deliberative Democracy, Asaf Bar-Tura
Dissertations
Scholars defending the deliberative model of democracy have focused much of their attention on argumentation and criteria for offering public reasons in deliberative processes, but have paid little attention to the ways in which digital technologies mediate such deliberations. Conversely, critical theorists of technology have emphasized the socially determined nature of technology, but have lacked a theory of democracy through which to normatively assess technologies that mediate public discourse. Through a reworking of Jürgen Habermas’s discourse-based theory of democracy, my research provides a new understanding of the flows of political communication and power in the democratic public sphere and the …
Managing Workers Who Are Deaf: A Phenomenological Investigation Of Hearing Supervisors, Hayley Sneiderman Stokar
Managing Workers Who Are Deaf: A Phenomenological Investigation Of Hearing Supervisors, Hayley Sneiderman Stokar
Dissertations
This study examines the experience of hearing managers of Deaf employees in the restaurant sector, specifically as it relates to accommodation and social integration. Deaf workers who use American Sign Language differ from their hearing peers with regard to communication style, language choice, and need for accommodation. Responsibility for social integration and logistical accommodation falls largely on managers, who may be unfamiliar with the needs and capabilities of Deaf workers. The aim of this study is to generate knowledge about the accommodation and social integration experiences of managers with Deaf workers that can benefit those unfamiliar with these phenomena. The …
What Is Mortal Shall Be Swallowed Up By Life (2 Cor 5:4): A Critical And Constructive Engagement With John Hick's Theology Of Death In Death And Eternal Life (1976), Hongmei Zhao
Dissertations
The springboard for my investigation is John Hick’s theology of death or “par-eschatology” in Death and Eternal Life (1976), a postmortem soteriology rooted in Irenaeus’ teleological framework of person-making. I organize my project around the two constitutive aspects of human existence: time and space, or temporality and embodiment.
Regarding postmortem temporality, I present: 1) new scholarships in the New Testament, early Christianity, and Reformation studies, and 2) recent developments in ecumenical dialogues and the Justification-Sanctification Debate. Through this, I demonstrate a widely emerging emphasis–the centrality of sanctification in the Christian understanding of salvation. I argue that this crystalizing consensus lends …
The Seat Of Justice In The House Of Love: Toward An Ecclesial Theory Of Justice, James Grant Gholson
The Seat Of Justice In The House Of Love: Toward An Ecclesial Theory Of Justice, James Grant Gholson
Dissertations
ABSTRACT
This dissertation is an extension of the ongoing conversation about justice within Christian ethics from a postliberal perspective. Beginning with an account of Christian ethical methodology centered on the grammar of the Christian “language-game” that is both shaped by, and which mediates, the communal reading of scripture, the dissertation argues that Christian discipleship, as a teleological enterprise governed by the normativity of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, consists in the communal representation of Christ’s own faithfulness to God as a public witness over against the reign of the “principalities and powers” of the world. Applying Iris Marion …

Analysis Of Human Versus Machine Translation Accuracy, Shihua Brazill, Michael Masters, Pat Munday
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine whether significant differences exist in Chinese-to-English translation accuracy between moderate to higher-level human translators and commonly employed freely available machine translation tools. A Chinese-to-English language proficiency structure test and a Chinese-to-English phrase and sentence translation test were given to a large sample of machine (n=10) and human translators (n=133) who are native Chinese speakers with at least 15 years of familiarity with the English language. Results demonstrated that native Chinese speakers with this minimum level of English proficiency were significantly better at translating sentences and phrases from Chinese to English, compared to …

Stewarding Our Mountains: A Program Evaluation Of Place-Based Service Learning On The Appalachian Trail, Bonnie Jean Harvey
Stewarding Our Mountains: A Program Evaluation Of Place-Based Service Learning On The Appalachian Trail, Bonnie Jean Harvey
Anthropology Theses
Appalachians’ relationships with the environment alter over time due to political, economic, and ecological factors. These changing relationships, for instance rural agrarian livelihoods shifting to urban contexts, can influence how an individual perceives personal responsibility in regional environmental stewardship, such as caring for and preserving local ecology. Observing that recent shifts resulted in less perceived youth stewardship for the Appalachian Trail (AT), the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) created the Trail to Every Classroom (TTEC) program in 2006. The TTEC program attempts to foster stewardship through the practice of place-based service learning - a diversification of education where youth learn through …
Split Personalities: Understanding The Responder Identity In College Composition, Anthony Edward Edington
Split Personalities: Understanding The Responder Identity In College Composition, Anthony Edward Edington
Journal of Response to Writing
For decades, researchers and teachers in composition have wrestled with how to respond to student writing. Part of this discussion has focused on what role teachers should assume when reading and responding to texts. From these discussions, different roles have emerged, including the gatekeeper, the critic, the facilitator, the coach, and the judge, among others. While some have argued that the use of response identities helps teachers focus their responses while offering students an audience for their texts, others are more wary of what influence these roles may have on the student-teacher relationship and teacher comments. This article explores the …

Morphological Comparisons Of Five Species Of Tamarins In Peru, Leila M. Porter, Tyler D. Kotowski
Morphological Comparisons Of Five Species Of Tamarins In Peru, Leila M. Porter, Tyler D. Kotowski
Honors Capstones
Tamarins of the genus Leontocebus (formerly Saguinus), subfamily Callitrichinae, represent one of the most diverse primate taxa but detailed information about their phylogeny is still lacking. Recent molecular phylogenetic analyses have led to the reclassification of many taxa. In Peru, ten subspecies of tamarins were reclassified as eight new species and four new subspecies based on genetic differences among these taxa. However, no one has attempted to determine whether these new “genetic species” have distinguishable morphological traits. To do this, we examined twenty crania and skins representing five Peruvian “genetic species” housed in the Mammals Collection at the Field Museum …

North Minneapolis Residents' Knowledge And Awareness Of Indoor Air Quality In Older Residences, Blisse Marie Cajacob
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Older housing stock is one suspected cause of poor indoor air quality and poor indoor air quality can cause many negative health conditions. Four hazardous conditions related to indoor air quality were examined for this study: lead, asbestos, dampness causing mold and radon. North Minneapolis residents, specifically low-income, disproportionately live in older stock houses and have higher rates of asthma compared to other parts of the state. In this study, data was collected to understand North Minneapolis residents' knowledge and awareness of indoor air quality in older residences. Fifteen minute interviews followed by a brief sociodemographic questionnaire were used to …
Reason Is King And Science Is His Crown: A Study Of French Science-Fiction For The Dissemination Of Philosophical Thought, Lauren A. Gandy
Reason Is King And Science Is His Crown: A Study Of French Science-Fiction For The Dissemination Of Philosophical Thought, Lauren A. Gandy
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The thesis seeks to explore the didactic application of French science-fiction during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries for the portrayal and dissemination of their respective philosophical theories. Studying science-fiction novels during these centuries will allow a comparison of seventeenth and eighteenth-century dissemination methods, to determine if the foundational seventeenth-century methods were retained or modified to more accurately represent the change in philosophical attitudes. Exploration of this topic will contribute to a greater understanding of French Enlightenment theory, analysis of relatively unstudied novels in the science-fiction genre, and a novel approach to “proto” science-fiction literature by connecting the previously separate genres …

The Agent Across The Border: "Russia" And "Ukraine" As Actors In The News, 2013-2015, Abbey L. Thomas
Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics
This study examines how two media sources—one Russian and one Ukrainian—portray Russia and Ukraine before, during, and after the EuroMaidan crisis in Ukraine. Russian-language texts posted between January 2013 and December 2015 on the sites Ukranews.com (a Ukrainian news outlet) and TASS.ru (Russian) were organized in a corpus of over 20,000,000 words. This study analyzes the nouns “Россия” (“Russia”) and “Украина” (“Ukraine”) according to the verbal predicates that attach to either noun. The results demonstrate predictable variation in the agency of the two entities in response to cultural events and contexts.
The analysis of the corpus data operationalizes a combined …

The Perception Of Creaky Voice: Does Speaker Gender Affect Our Judgments?, Kaitlyn E. Lee
Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics
This study focuses on the phonetics of creaky voice saliency and the perceptual sociolinguistic indexes that are evoked during creaky voice use. This study consists of two experiments: the first a listener judgment based Likert scale, the second an AXB study. The first experiment used modal and creaky voice statement-of-fact tokens to determine whether the speaker is or isn’t x characteristic (intelligent, feminine, educated, masculine, hesitant, and confident). This study found that both male and female speakers were found to be less intelligent, less educated, less feminine, more masculine, less confident, and more hesitant when using creaky voice phonation as …

Afterword: Gesamtkunstwerk As Epistemic Space, Kevin S. Amidon Ph.D.
Modern Languages Faculty Publications
For two centuries, Gesamtkunstwerk—the ideal of the “total work of art”—has exerted a powerful influence over artistic discourse and practice, spurring new forms of collaboration and provoking debates over the political instrumentalization of art. Despite its popular conflation with the work of Richard Wagner, Gesamtkunstwerk’s lineage and legacies extend well beyond German Romanticism, as this wide-ranging collection demonstrates. In eleven compact chapters, scholars from a variety of disciplines trace the idea’s evolution in German-speaking Europe, from its foundations in the early nineteenth century to its manifold articulations and reimaginings in the twentieth century and beyond, providing an uncommonly broad perspective …

Reopening Paradise: Ecotourism In Cuba, Patricia Socarras
ENV 434 Environmental Justice
In December 2014, President Barack Obama announced that his administration will be working towards normalizing relations between Cuba and America for the first time in sixty-four years. This announcement was followed by loosened regulations on travel and talks of reopening commerce for the near future. The prospect of deregulating trade and travel between Cuba and the United States has many individuals concerned for the various tensions that juxtapose the two countries. Primarily, many are concerned with the tensions between Cuba’s socialist values and those of American enterprise. Questions are being raised about the ways these two conflicting values can coexist …
Hebrew And Computer-Mediated Communication: The Effects Of A Language Manipulation On Perception, Identity, And Preservation, Tamar Nir
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This study aimed to explore the ways in which Hebrew is currently being manipulated online through a linguistic deviation called Fakatsa. In this study, participants were asked to rate random statements of frivolous or serious topics in either standard grammatical Hebrew or Fakatsa Hebrew conditions on specific judgment values. It was hypothesized that participants would rate the Fakatsa writer negatively on certain characteristics, such as intelligence, education, religiosity, and nationalism and positively on other characteristics, such as femininity and creativity. Twenty-four participants completed this experiment. Results showed that participants responded as expected for certain negative attributes typical of Fakatsa and …

Constructing Identity Painting, Mythos And Persona, Danielle Dygert
Theses & ETDs
The physical manifestation of persona can be seen as morphologies of man, flora, and fauna from Homer’s human animal hybrid characters acted out during ancient cult rituals to contemporary fantasy, comic and game art characters acted out by Cosplayers. This thesis consists of a series of oil paintings, shaped by Homer’s coming-of-age motif and my perception of sisterhood, as I am one of seven sisters. Sisterhood, understood though the Pleiade myth, is both autonomous and mutual. Thesomophoria, Kathos and Anodos, a seven panel cycle, embodies the complexities of identity played out within an autonomous mythscape. This thesis offers an alternative …

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Camperio Ciani et al. argued that the Urak-Lawoi people of Ko Lipe island live in a ‘‘traditional,’’ ‘‘subsistence primitive society’’ reminiscent of the ‘‘ancestral’’ human past and that their socio-cultural situation is ‘‘remarkably similar’’ to Samoa. On this basis, they asserted that the Ko Lipe Urak-Lawoi are an appropriate population for determining the role that kin selection played in the evolution of male androphilia. The purpose of this commentary is to outline some of our concerns with this characterization and with the statistical analyses conducted by Camperio Ciani et al. in their study of the Urak-Lawoi.

Paleoindians, Proboscideans, And Phytotoxins: Exploring The Feasibility Of Poison Hunting During The Last Glacial-Interglacial Transition, Alan J. Osborn
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Archaeologists have long envisioned direct encounters between Paleoindians and megafauna of the Last Glacial-Interglacial Transition (LGIT, 15–11.5 cal BP). Debate continues regarding the role that these Paleoindian hunters played in the extinction event(s). Archaeologists, paleontologists, and paleobiologists have proposed that Paleoindians proved to be very effective hunters who employed darts and spears tipped with razorsharp, chipped-stone projectile points. These weapons are assumed to have been capable of inflicting mortal wounds and death as a result of massive blood loss. Few archaeologists, however, have considered the possible use of hunting poisons, as well as the implications of poison use for past …
