A Preliminary Study Of Intergenerational Differences In Masxha Regarding Practice And Attitudes Towards Zulu Traditions During Pregnancy And Birth, Momoko Oyama Oct 2016

A Preliminary Study Of Intergenerational Differences In Masxha Regarding Practice And Attitudes Towards Zulu Traditions During Pregnancy And Birth, Momoko Oyama

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In the Zulu culture, several traditions and rituals are practiced during a woman’s pregnancy and perinatal period. However, as urbanization spreads and western influences strengthen, these rituals risk being lost. This project aims to capture existing knowledge of these traditions and to assess the intergenerational changes in practice and attitudes towards practicing the rituals.

Information on Zulu traditions practiced during a woman’s pregnancy and perinatal period was collected through two interviews and a focus group consisting of three elderly women in Masxha, a Black township in KwaZulu-Natal. Following the interviews and focus group, 32 Masxha residents were recruited to complete …

Migrant Education In Morocco: Cross-Cultural Competence Favored Over Integrative Reform. An Analysis Of The Moroccan Government’S Migrant Integration Efforts Through Education., Ella Schoenen

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In 2014 the Ministry in Charge of Moroccans Abroad and Migration Affairs, adopted the National Policy of Immigration and Asylum detailing efforts to realize an adaptive education system, sensitive to migrant education and inclusive of teaching and learning strategies directed towards children of foreign heritage. As migrant networks grow more and more fortified, and people all over the world experience improved mobility, destination countries are finding multicultural and inclusive education systems integral to the wellbeing of its new residents, and the tolerance of its native citizens. Based on the national strategy for immigration and asylum put forth by the Ministry …

Who Speaks The Culture Of The Corporation?, Gwendolyn Gordon Oct 2016

Who Speaks The Culture Of The Corporation?, Gwendolyn Gordon

Michigan Business & Entrepreneurial Law Review

Recent cases – Burwell v Hobby Lobby Stores and Citizens United chief among them – evince a new understanding of the nature of the corporation and its place in society. Whether a corporation has rights – such as those of religious exercise – is not, however, just a question of legal interpretation. To answer this question requires a theory of group or cultural identity, that is, a theory of how a group may have “culture” separate and apart from those of the individuals that comprise it. And such a theory must address how to understand the meaning of culture when …

Complexity Of Academic Socialization Of Historically Underrepresented Doctoral Students: De-Privileging Distinctions Between Macro-And-Micro-Theoretical Approaches, Zarrina Talan Azizova Oct 2016

Complexity Of Academic Socialization Of Historically Underrepresented Doctoral Students: De-Privileging Distinctions Between Macro-And-Micro-Theoretical Approaches, Zarrina Talan Azizova

Teaching, Leadership & Professional Practice Faculty Publications

This article represents a conceptual work that critiques and challenges traditional linear theoretical assumptions of academic socialization and integration that are often applied to research of diverse populations in academia in general and doctoral education specifically. The article further proposes a new conceptual framework of academic socialization as a meaning-making act of historically underrepresented doctoral students. The ultimate goal of the proposed framework is to reconcile the restrictive use of sociological macro- and micro- orientations to foreground possibilities of a conceptual and empirical focus on an individual meaning making act (as a form of individual agency) of historically underrepresented doctoral …

Killing Two Birds With One Stone: Data-Driven Storage Selection And Collection Analysis, Yao Chen Oct 2016

Killing Two Birds With One Stone: Data-Driven Storage Selection And Collection Analysis, Yao Chen

Journal of East Asian Libraries

This article investigated how to use holding data, circulation and interlibrary loan (ILL) statistics to analyze the East Asian collection at the University of Minnesota. Data from multiple sources was divided along Library of Congress call number classification to help explore what was collected, utilized, and what should be grown or de-emphasized. These three sets of data are readily available in most libraries, and they can serve as a powerful tool to help subject librarians to assess the collection in their subject fields. With these data, a librarian can also make informed decisions about collection management, including remote storage selection …

Etsu Today - Fall 2016, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU Today [magazine]

The leaves have begun to change here on the campus of East Tennessee State University and we are well into the fall semester. Other than commencement, the start of a new academic year is my favorite time of year at ETSU, for it brings a sense of academic renewal as we return to the classroom and our new students begin their academic journeys. Each fall semester, I have the opportunity to welcome new and returning students to the campus, providing them with a few words of wisdom as their ETSU experience begins to take shape. I encourage our students to …

Action Research Using Entomological Research To Promote Hands-On Science Inquiry In A High-Poverty, Midwest Urban High School, Dustin Stockmann Oct 2016

Action Research Using Entomological Research To Promote Hands-On Science Inquiry In A High-Poverty, Midwest Urban High School, Dustin Stockmann

Dissertations

The purpose of this mixed-methods action research study was to examine to what extent entomological research can promote students’ hands-on learning in a high-poverty, urban, secondary setting. In reviewing the literature, the researcher was not able to find a specific study that investigated how entomological research could promote the hands-on learning of students. The researcher did find evidence that research on learning in a secondary setting was important to student growth. It should also be noted that support was established for the implementation of hands-on science inquiry in the classroom setting. The study’s purpose was to aid educators in their …

Profile: Inspiring Alumni Leaders, University Relations Oct 2016

Profile: Inspiring Alumni Leaders, University Relations

Profile (1996-)

This issue of Profile and my impending departure have given me another opportunity: the chance to think about leadership. Why does it matter? What are the elements of effective leadership? And how is it present in Morris alumni? In the pages that follow we focus on several alumni who provide examples of leadership for the rest of us to study and emulate. As we emerge from a summer of violence in this country and around the world, and as we bear witness to an extremely polarized political election season, it seems appropriate to take some time to reflect on what …
