Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Fluorescein-Tagged Carborane For Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (Bnct), Lucas A. Kuzmanic Dec 2016

Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Fluorescein-Tagged Carborane For Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (Bnct), Lucas A. Kuzmanic

Honors Capstones

Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) is a bimodal cancer treatment that involves killing cancer cells through a nuclear reaction of two nontoxic species, boron-10 (10B) and thermal neutrons. There are currently only two FDA-approved drugs for this promising area of cancer therapy, so present research focuses on the synthesis of novel compounds with high boron content as well as methods for their delivery into the tumor cell. A fluorescent tag can allow the observation of the delivery vehicle’s uptake during biodistribution studies. Accordingly, fluorescein was conjugated with iodinated 1-methyl-o-carborane and characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy …

Free Speech Matters: The Roberts Court And The First Amendment, Joel M. Gora Dec 2016

Free Speech Matters: The Roberts Court And The First Amendment, Joel M. Gora

Journal of Law and Policy

This article contends that the Roberts Court, in the period from 2006 to 2016, arguably became the most speech-protective Supreme Court in memory. In a series of wide-ranging First Amendment decisions, the Court sounded and strengthened classic free speech themes and principles. Taken together, the Roberts Court’s decisions have left free speech rights much stronger than they were found.

Those themes and principles include a strong libertarian distrust of government regulation of speech and presumption in favor of letting people control speech, a consistent refusal to fashion new “non-speech” categories, a reluctance to “balance” free speech away against governmental interests, …

Cellphones And The Fourth Amendment: Why Cellphone Users Have A Reasonable Expectation Of Privacy In Their Location Information, Paul Cividanes Dec 2016

Cellphones And The Fourth Amendment: Why Cellphone Users Have A Reasonable Expectation Of Privacy In Their Location Information, Paul Cividanes

Journal of Law and Policy

The Fourth Amendment, which affords individuals protection from unreasonable searches and seizures, was ratified over two hundred years ago. As such, it was impossible for the Amendment’s framers to conceive the technologies that exist today. As technology progresses, courts are often faced with the task of deciding how the Fourth Amendment should apply in the modern world. As Fourth Amendment jurisprudence has developed, the Supreme Court has originated tests and doctrines for courts to use when hearing Fourth Amendment challenges to government action. One such test, the ‘reasonable expectation of privacy’ test, looks to see whether an individual has a …

Where's The Fire?, Burt Neuborne

Journal of Law and Policy

Freedom of speech is priceless, but distressingly fragile. Life, and law, would be much simpler if we could react to free speech's importance and fragility by granting it absolute legal protection. Since, however, absolute protection of speech is not—and should not be—a serious option, we face the legal realist challenge of erecting a First Amendment legal structure capable of providing real-world protection to highly controversial speech, often by weak speakers, without closing the door to government regulation. Given the uncertainty inherent in applying fact-dependent complex rules in protean factual settings, many potential speakers would avoid being drawn into unpredictable and …

Protecting Hatred Preserves Freedom: Why Offensive Expressions Command Constitutional Protection, Andrew P. Napolitano Dec 2016

Protecting Hatred Preserves Freedom: Why Offensive Expressions Command Constitutional Protection, Andrew P. Napolitano

Journal of Law and Policy

The First Amendment is not the guardian of taste. Instead, the U.S. Constitution wholeheartedly protects freedom of thought and expression, even if generated and defined by hatred, as long as that expression does not produce immediate lawless violence. Although free speech may lead to tenuous relationships or uncomfortable debates, it must be defended unconditionally. Too many politicians and lawmakers believe that the freedom of speech protected by the First Amendment attaches only to those ideas and expressions that they approve of; this is not so. This article argues that the Founders intended the First Amendment's free speech principle as a …

Persistent Threats To Commercial Speech, Jonathan H. Adler Dec 2016

Persistent Threats To Commercial Speech, Jonathan H. Adler

Journal of Law and Policy

The current Supreme Court is very protective of speech, including commercial speech. Threats to commercial speech persist nonetheless. This article briefly examines two: the use of commercial speech restrictions as a form of rent-seeking, and compelled commercial speech. Regulation of commercial speech protect is sometimes used to protect established corporate interests from competitors who are less able to bear the costs of regulation, with consequences that extend beyond the economic marketplace. In the case of commercial speech, courts have been unduly deferential to claims of a consumer “right to know” as a basis for mandated labeling and disclosure. Greater protection …

Type III secretion systems (T3SS) are central virulence factors for many pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria, and secreted T3SS effectors can block key aspects of host cell signaling. To counter this, innate immune responses can also sense some T3SS components to initiate anti-bacterial mechanisms. The Yersinia pestis T3SS is particularly effective and sophisticated in manipulating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and IL-18, which are typically processed into their mature forms by active caspase-1 following inflammasome formation. Some effectors, like Y. pestis YopM, may block inflammasome activation. Here we show that YopM prevents Y. pestis induced activation of the Pyrin inflammasome induced …

Research Challenges And Conservation Implications For Urban Cat Management In New Zealand, Kh Kikillus, Gk Chambers, Mj Farnworth, Km Hare Dec 2016

Research Challenges And Conservation Implications For Urban Cat Management In New Zealand, Kh Kikillus, Gk Chambers, Mj Farnworth, Km Hare

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Over the past 20 years, conservation efforts in New Zealand have moved from being concentrated in rural and isolated island locations, where exotic mammalian predators are often controlled, to begin to bring native fauna back to major cities. However, human–wildlife conflicts arise when conservation occurs in close proximity to cities. These are particularly intense when companion animals are involved either as potential predators or prey of high-value conservation animals. Within New Zealand, this conflict is particularly fraught around domestic cats (Felis catus) in the urban environment. Cats in New Zealand are recognised as major introduced predators of native fauna, but …

Improving Screening For Problem Behaviors Among Homeless Children In Georgia, Marvin So, Luisita G. Agbayani, Mariel K. Gutierrez, Josef T. Griffins Dec 2016

Improving Screening For Problem Behaviors Among Homeless Children In Georgia, Marvin So, Luisita G. Agbayani, Mariel K. Gutierrez, Josef T. Griffins

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Among other challenges, homeless children often struggle with internalizing and externalizing behavior problems that impair functioning and well-being (Bassuk, et al., 1997). Given the instability of service continuity often present in the lives of homeless families and their children, it is strikingly common for child mental and behavioral disorders to be caught at a later developmental stage among this group compared to both housed and other low-income peers (Grant, et al., 2007). Emergency shelters represent an untapped setting in which to deploy universal, evidence-based screeners for problem behaviors among this population. We implemented universal screening interventions across three shelters serving …

Referring to the MUSIC Model of Academic Motivation and reflecting upon personal observations, student outcomes, and student comments, I provide personal insight on how design-focused projects can be …

The Trifecta Approach And More: Student Perspectives On Strategies For Successful Online Lectures, Laura Jacobi Dec 2016

The Trifecta Approach And More: Student Perspectives On Strategies For Successful Online Lectures, Laura Jacobi

i.e.: inquiry in education

The purpose of this study was to explore the perspectives of students regarding what was effective about the way in which the online lectures were structured in an upper level online organizational communication course. Student evaluations from 27 students were used, with questions focused upon the structure of lectures in the online course as compared to other online courses and to traditional classrooms. Qualitative analyses reveal the use of the trifecta approach, the use of audio voice-overs with PowerPoint slides, the concise nature of lectures, the ability to review them, and the use of key points as significant to student …

Okay, Our Courses Are Online, But Are They Ada Compliant? An Investigation Of Faculty Awareness Of Accessibility At A Midwestern University, John A. Huss, Shannon Eastep

i.e.: inquiry in education

The purpose of this study was to investigate the current extent of our faculty’s familiarity with the rights, responsibilities, and resources pertaining to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 508 of the Workforce Rehabilitation Act insofar as compliance and accommodations for online courses. Through the collection of data we sought to heighten awareness and encourage faculty members to look at and think about how their online programs and courses are consistent with accessible design, thereby providing a real opportunity for continuous improvement in both course design and implementation. An electronic researcher-created survey instrument revealed that accessibility compliance for …

Rivalry In Toyer: The Impact Of The Male Gaze And The Final Girl On Theatrical Conflict, Sento Ashby

Liberal Arts Capstones

Although much progress has been made in recent years, traditional gender roles still permeate society. This project investigated gender constructs in relation to choreographed violence and found that females are often victims unless they adopt masculine survival styles, while males are usually aggressors – particularly towards females. Analysis of the characters in the play Toyer by Gardner McKay supported this conclusion.

Retracing Augustine’S Ethics: Lying, Necessity, And The Image Of God, Matthew Puffer Dec 2016

Retracing Augustine’S Ethics: Lying, Necessity, And The Image Of God, Matthew Puffer

Christ College Faculty Publications

Augustine’s exposition of the image of God in Book 15 of On The Trinity (De Trinitate) sheds light on multiple issues that arise in scholarly interpretations of Augustine’s account of lying. This essay argues against interpretations that posit a uniform account of lying in Augustine—with the same constitutive features, and insisting both that it is never necessary to tell a lie and that lying is absolutely prohibited. Such interpretations regularly employ intertextual reading strategies that elide distinctions and developments in Augustine’s ethics of lying. Instead, I show how looking at texts written prior and subsequent to the texts usually consulted …

Greenbroke: Stories, Sarah Jean Rains Dec 2016

Greenbroke: Stories, Sarah Jean Rains

Graduate Theses

In my collection Greenbroke: Stories, I explore the underbelly of the equestrian world. On the surface, the equestrian community is viewed as a world for the wealthy. It is viewed as a community of extravagance and excess. Additionally, there are few pieces of fiction that actually take the reader beyond the glamor of the surface. My stories do just that. Throughout my collection it was my aim to allow readers into a world that is different from the stereotypical equine community they thought they knew. In my stories, horse people watch their worlds collapse around them. My characters exist …

The Catholic Church, Catalyst For Change: Taking The Black Community Of Rock Hill, Sc From The Twentieth To The Twenty-First Century, 1946-2016, Sandra Ludwa

Graduate Theses

The Roman Catholic Oratorians came to Rock Hill, South Carolina in 1935 with the mission to minister to the poor, underprivileged, and disadvantaged of all races and creeds, and to spread the good news of Catholicism. During the past eighty-one years, the Catholic Church has had a tremendous effect on where the community stands today. It was, and remains, significant because it improves economic, social, educational, and vocational conditions for the black community in particular. The church is ever changing, growing, and evolving to meet the needs of its congregation and community, and is quite different from the Catholic Church …
