Using The Clean Water Act To Tackle Ocean Acidification: When Carbon Dioxide Pollutes The Oceans, Miyoko Sakashita Jul 2016

Using The Clean Water Act To Tackle Ocean Acidification: When Carbon Dioxide Pollutes The Oceans, Miyoko Sakashita

Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy

Carbon dioxide is an invisible pollutant that threatens water quality and entire marine ecosystems. The oceans absorb carbon pollution from the atmosphere, which reacts with seawater causing it to become more acidic. Ocean acidification impairs the growth, survival and reproduction of marine animals, and if unabated will massively disrupt entire ecosystems. One of the most powerful tools that we have to combat ocean acidification is the Clean Water Act—a law that has successfully solved difficult water pollution problems for decades. This article will discuss how the Clean Water Act can be leveraged to address ocean acidification and to protect our …

Ten Ways States Can Combat Ocean Acidification (And Why They Should), Ryan P. Kelly, Margaret R. Caldwell

Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy

The ocean is becoming more acidic worldwide as a result of increasing atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (“CO2”) and other pollutants. This fundamental change is likely to have substantial ecological and economic consequences globally. In this Article, we provide a toolbox for understanding and addressing the drivers of ocean acidification. We begin with an overview of the relevant science, highlighting known causes of chemical change in the coastal ocean. Because of the difficulties associated with controlling diffuse atmospheric pollutants such as CO2, we then focus on controlling smaller-scale agents of acidification, discussing ten legal and policy …

Small Packages, Big Returns: Uncovering The Venom Diversity Of Small Inverebrate Conoidean Snails, J. Gorson, M. Holford Jul 2016

Small Packages, Big Returns: Uncovering The Venom Diversity Of Small Inverebrate Conoidean Snails, J. Gorson, M. Holford

Publications and Research

Venomous organisms used in research were historically chosen based on size and availability. This opportunity-driven strategy created a species bias in which snakes, scorpions, and spiders became the primary subjects of venom research. Increasing technological advancements have enabled interdisciplinary studies using genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics to expand venom investigation to animals that produce small amounts of venom or lack traditional venom producing organs. One group of non-traditional venomous organisms that have benefitted from the rise of -omic technologies is the Conoideans. The Conoidean superfamily of venomous marine snails includes, the Terebridae, Turridae (s.l), and Conidae. Conoidea venom is used for …

David Lion Gardiner: A Yankee In Gold Rush California, 1849-1851, Molly Mcclain

History: Faculty Scholarship

The US-Mexico War (1846-48) transformed the San Diego region by drawing in new investors, among them David Lion Gardner (1816-92) who came from New York to seek his fortune during the Gold Rush. Uncomfortable with the reckless pursuit of profit that he witnessed in San Francisco, Gardiner set up a mercantile business in San Diego. His surviving letters to family members tell the story of his experience in California between 1849 and 1851. They also reveal the capitalist origins of modern San Diego.

Understanding Women's Needs For Weather And Climate Information In Agrarian Settings: The Case Of Ngetou Maleck, Senegal, Edward Carr, Grant Fleming, Tshibangu Kalala

Sustainability and Social Justice

While climate services have the potential to reduce precipitation- and temperature-related risks to agrarian livelihoods, such outcomes are possible only when they deliver information that is salient, legitimate, and credible to end users. This is particularly true of climate services intended to address the needs of women in agrarian contexts. The design of such gender-sensitive services is hampered by oversimplified framings of women as a group in both the adaptation and climate services literatures. This paper demonstrates that even at the village level, women have different climate and weather information needs, and differing abilities to act on that information. Therefore, …

Scientific Agriculture And The Agricultural State: Farmers, Capitalism, And Government In The Late Nineteenth Century, Ariel Ron Jul 2016

Scientific Agriculture And The Agricultural State: Farmers, Capitalism, And Government In The Late Nineteenth Century, Ariel Ron

History Faculty Publications

The history of American capitalism in the decades around the turn of the twentieth century usually focuses on labor and industry to the relative neglect of important changes in agriculture. Landmark federal policies from the Morrill Land Grant Act (1862) to the Smith-Lever Act (1914) indicate that these changes involved a tightening and self-reinforcing relationship between commercial farming and national governing power. To understand this trajectory, which contrasts markedly with the experience of business and labor, we have to consider a long-developing movement for “scientific agriculture” that allowed well-organized farmers to exert decisive influence on federal policy from about the …

Characterization Of Salmonella Isangi Possessing A Ctx-M15 Esbl Associated With An Outbreak In A Us Hospital, Geehan Suleyman, Mary Perri, Dora Vager, Linoj Samuel, Marcus J. Zervos, George Alangaden, Robert J. Tibbetts

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Articles

Over an approximately 50-day period in 2015, an outbreak of CTX-M-15 extended spectrum β-lactamase-(ESBL)-possessing Salmonella Isangi occurred among 19 adult surgical patients and one healthcare worker (HCW) at a large urban tertiary care hospital in the United States. A total of 45 S. Isangi isolates were isolated from stool (35), blood (4), urine (3), respiratory (2), and wound (1) cultures. Phenotypically, all but three isolates demonstrated resistance to ampicillin, ampicillin/sulbactam, ceftriaxone, and cefepime, and one isolate was resistant to ertapenem. Genotypically, a single CTX-M-15 ESBL was identified in all but three isolates by real-time PCR. Interestingly, two of the CTX-M-15 …

Trace Elements And Human Obesity: An Overview, Shamshad Karatela, Neil I. Ward Jul 2016

Trace Elements And Human Obesity: An Overview, Shamshad Karatela, Neil I. Ward

Manipal Journal of Nursing and Health Sciences

The human body requires certain amount of trace elements to function properly (especially those that are classified as essential to health). Most elements are co-factors in the molecular mechanisms within the body but when in excess can also cause toxicity. Concentrations of some elements in excess (above optimum) or deficient amount can progress to some types of metabolic abnormalities which could lead to obesity. Obesity is a multifactorial condition with multiple pathways including environmental, dietary, and genetic. All these factors, including elemental abnormalities can disrupt the molecular mechanisms. Whilst there is evidence that obesity causes several elemental deficiencies, there is …

Exploring Civil Rights Through Mississippi Collections, Jennifer Brannock, Greg Johnson

Urban Library Journal

Bibliographic instruction is an important tool to teach students about services and collections offered in a library. At the University of Southern Mississippi and the University of Mississippi, curators often use instruction sessions to teach students about the civil rights history of the state. Through correspondence, photographs, government documents, and music, students become aware of the activities of civil rights activists and the segregationists they fought against. This paper explores the various civil rights primary sources and subjects covered in instruction sessions at the University of Southern Mississippi and the University of Mississippi.

Multiracial Resources In A Monoracially-Organized Library World, Helen Look Jul 2016

Multiracial Resources In A Monoracially-Organized Library World, Helen Look

Urban Library Journal

Mainstream library practices in organizing information generally reflects social norms in which white, as a racial group, is privileged and dominant and others are marginalized and frequently excluded. Multiracial/multi-ethnic people are growing in numbers and are increasingly unwilling to accept exclusion and invisibility. In a society that prefers the binary -- black/white, male/female, conservative/liberal -- fighting for anything else is a challenge. Researchers pursuing information about those standing outside of any racial binary typically struggle with poor classification in library catalogs and bibliographic databases, variable language with wildly different meanings depending on context, and offensive archaisms that may be their …

State Of The Art Review: Promoting Dog Walking For Healthy Lifestyles, Hayley Christian, Adrian Bauman, Jacqueline Epping, Glenn N. Levine, Gavin Mccormack, Ryan E. Rhodes, Elizabeth Richards, Melanie Rock, Carri Westgarth

School of Nursing Faculty Publications

Regular physical activity is associated with numerous health benefits, including the prevention of many chronic diseases and conditions or a reduction in their adverse effects. Intervention studies suggest that promoting dog walking among dog owners who do not routinely walk their dogs may be an effective strategy for increasing and maintaining regular physical activity. Strategies that emphasize the value of dog walking for both dogs and people, promote the context-dependent repetition of dog walking, enhance the social-interaction benefits, encourage family dog walking and ensure availability of public space for dog walking may encourage increased dog walking. Research also supports organizing …

Reduction Of Friction By Recombinant Human Proteoglycan 4 In Il-1Α Stimulated Bovine Cartilage Explants, Katherine M. Larson, Ling Zhang, Khaled A. Elsaid, Tannin A. Schmidt, Braden C. Fleming, Gary J. Badger, Gregory D. Jay

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

A boundary lubricant attaches and protects sliding bearing surfaces by preventing interlocking asperity-asperity contact. Proteoglycan-4 (PRG4) is a boundary lubricant found in the synovial fluid that provides chondroprotection to articular surfaces. Inflammation of the diarthrodial joint modulates local PRG4 concentration. Thus, we measured the effects of inflammation, with Interkeukin-1α (IL-1α) incubation, upon boundary lubrication and PRG4 expression in bovine cartilage explants. We further aimed to determine whether the addition of exogenous human recombinant PRG4 (rhPRG4) could mitigate the effects of inflammation on boundary lubrication and PRG4 expression in vitro.

Cartilage explants, following a 7-day incubation with IL-1α, were tested …

Determining Groundwater Sources And Ages Via Isotope Geochemistry In Big Sky, Montana, Thomson Connie Jul 2016

Determining Groundwater Sources And Ages Via Isotope Geochemistry In Big Sky, Montana, Thomson Connie

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

The Big Sky ski resort area in southwestern Montana is experiencing exponential growth in both development and population. Concerns have arisen over the quantity of good-quality groundwater in the region, and whether there is a large enough reserve to support the growing demand. In light of already-documented water-level decreases, and domestic wells needing to be deepened or replaced, the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) enlisted the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology's Ground Water Investigation Program to perform an assessment of groundwater availability and quality in the region, and define groundwater supply sources.

The geology in the …

Water is the most essential nutrient for cattle production. Water is used in almost every bodily function, including digestion, milk production, and excretion. Given the role and function of water in relation to animal production, health, and welfare, it is critical that abundant, clean water is available in any livestock production operation. Livestock must have immediate access to water within every paddock of a rotational grazing system to realize maximum efficiency and production.
