Habitat Quality Modeling For Bird Species At Furman University, Emma Cook
Habitat Quality Modeling For Bird Species At Furman University, Emma Cook
Earth and Environmental Sciences Presentations
In rapidly urbanizing areas, such as Greenville County in Upstate South Carolina, it is important to study habitat use and quality across land cover types in order to maximize conservation. Habitat fragmentation is a threat to many species of birds in areas with increasing development, especially those species that utilize larger forest patches for nesting and foraging. While land cover type and patch size are extremely important factors in determining habitat quality for birds, recent research has shown that the matrix of surrounding landscape proves to be very important as well. The landscape matrix, sometimes called landscape mosaic, considers the …
Soundscape Mapping: Spatial Variability Of Sound At Furman University, Alec Schindler
Soundscape Mapping: Spatial Variability Of Sound At Furman University, Alec Schindler
Earth and Environmental Sciences Presentations
Looking at the entire soundscape and studying its spatial variability can often give us important information about the health of the ecosystem. However, most previous studies only measure sound intensity, and are therefore limited in their depiction of the soundscape. Another tool for mapping soundscapes is SPreAD-GIS. This tool models sound propagation in an area. However, previous studies have only used it to evaluate the effects of noise pollution, but not applied it towards depicting the soundscape as a whole. I mapped the soundscape of Furman University’s campus using sound intensity as well as many different soundscape indices in order …

Despite strong evidence for NMDA receptor (NMDAR) hypofunction as an underlying factor for cognitive disorders, the precise roles of various NMDAR subtypes remains unknown. The GluN2Ccontaining NMDARs exhibit unique biophysical properties and expression pattern, and lower expression of GluN2C subunit has been reported in postmortem brains from schizophrenia patients. We found that loss of GluN2C subunit leads to a shift in cortical excitatory-inhibitory balance towards greater inhibition. Specifically, pyramidal neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) of GluN2C knockout mice have reduced mEPSC frequency and dendritic spine density and a contrasting higher frequency of mIPSCs. In addition a greater number …

The Microbiome Of The Eastern Oyster, Crassostrea Virginica (Gmelin, 1791): Temporal And Spatial Variation, Environmental Influences, And Its Impact On Host Physiology, Melissa L. Pierce
Doctoral Dissertations
Prokaryotic communities are ubiquitous in every environment on earth. In the oceans they are integral to a number of biogeochemical processes and form the base of marine food webs. Microbes have also coevolved with eukaryotes, aiding in a variety of host functions including digestion and nutrient absorption, development of the immune system, and protection against pathogens. The disruption of these microbial communities, especially in the gut, has been linked to altered health statuses and physiological functions in a range of hosts. The eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin, 1791), is a valuable economic and ecological resource in near-shore environments. As a …

Carrie Mae Weems And The Construction Of Visual Text, W Michael Mosby
Carrie Mae Weems And The Construction Of Visual Text, W Michael Mosby
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Once photography's democratization of image started to take root in mid-1800's the evolution of the projected character of Emancipated African American became entwined with the visual, as well as the literary. My work examines MacArthur Fellow Carrie Mae Weems's series From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried as a contemporary literary text in direct dialogue with Frederick Douglass's ideas about photography's place in the regeneration of "self-image" for the new race of free African Americans. Weems's use of historical photographs originally intended to reinforce the same stereotypes Douglass hoped to defeat reclaims the individual in each image of …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Indoor mold may cause asthma and other respiratory symptoms; however, no study has been conducted in homes in Memphis. This study aims to monitor indoor mold exposure and explore its relationship to respiratory symptoms/illnesses. Environmental monitoring was conducted in 15 homes (9 with visible mold and 6 without) in Shelby County. Indoor environmental samples included ground and air vent dust, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), real-time particulate matter (PM), CO2, relative humidity (RH), and temperature. In laboratory, mold in dust samples were analyzed using an Endpoint PCR and VOCs on a thermal desorption-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (TD-GC/MS) system. No association was found …
Invasive Species Impacts On Infrastructure, Invasive Species Advisory Committee
Invasive Species Impacts On Infrastructure, Invasive Species Advisory Committee
National Invasive Species Council
Executive Summary
Invasive species represent one of the most significant threats to ecosystems, human and animal health, infrastructure, the economy, and cultural resources. Because potentially invasive, non-native species typically enter the United States through ports of entry in urban environments, some of the first observable impacts may be to infrastructure, yet little is known about the economic costs associated with these impacts to the “built” environment. In addition, federal agencies currently lack the authority necessary to effectively prevent, eradicate, and control invasive species that impact the human-built environment. This lack of authority prevents rapid response to some of the most …

Actin has well established functions in cellular morphogenesis. However, it is not well understood how the various actin assemblies in a cell are kept in a dynamic equilibrium, in particular when cells have to respond to acute signals. Here, we characterize a rapid and transient actin reset in response to increased intracellular calcium levels. Within seconds of calcium influx, the formin INF2 stimulates filament polymerization at the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), while cortical actin is disassembled. The reaction is then reversed within a few minutes. This Calcium-mediated actin reset (CaAR) occurs in a wide range of mammalian cell types and in …

Investigating The Impact Of Unsupervised Feature-Extraction From Multi-Wavelength Image Data For Photometric Classification Of Stars, Galaxies And Qsos, Annika Lindh
Conference papers
Accurate classification of astronomical objects currently relies on spectroscopic data. Acquiring this data is time-consuming and expensive compared to photometric data. Hence, improving the accuracy of photometric classification could lead to far better coverage and faster classification pipelines. This paper investigates the benefit of using unsupervised feature-extraction from multi-wavelength image data for photometric classification of stars, galaxies and QSOs. An unsupervised Deep Belief Network is used, giving the model a higher level of interpretability thanks to its generative nature and layer-wise training. A Random Forest classifier is used to measure the contribution of the novel features compared to a set …

Feminist Complaint Department, Sarah Taavola
Theses
This body of work and research is focused upon finding connections between the artist’s personal trajectory, Surrealist ideology, and Feminist texts. Starting with the Surrealist’s ideology of the unconscious, dreams, and use of objects, the artist investigates the eroticism and fetishization of female imagery. Surrealist work is brimming with portrayals of women as man’s mediator, muse, femme-enfant [child-woman], source and object of man’s desire, and the embodiment of l’amour fou [crazy love]. These representations of women depicted through fragmented female bodies transform into objects to be easily used and consumed, like furniture or food. The artist investigates how Surrealist women …
An Examination Into The Relationship Between Iron Deficiency And Postpartum Depression, Sara A. Burroughs
An Examination Into The Relationship Between Iron Deficiency And Postpartum Depression, Sara A. Burroughs
Senior Honors Theses
Postpartum depression is recognized as the most common complication of childbearing; however, its etiology remains fairly undetermined. Many different influences have been hypothesized as to what may cause postpartum depression, including changes in levels of various hormones (such as estrogen and progesterone), a decrease in serotonin, low levels of vitamin D, social factors, and iron deficiency. The lack of strong evidence for one specific cause makes it fairly clear that there are many factors that play a role in the development of postpartum depression. Iron deficiency is one issue that is thought to contribute to the development of postpartum depression …

Introduction: Civilians and military personnel develop a range of physical and psychosocial impairments following traumatic brain injury (TBI), including alcohol abuse. As a consequence, increased rates of alcohol misuse magnify TBI‑induced pathologies and impede rehabilitation efforts. Therefore, a developed understanding of the mechanisms that foster susceptibility of the injured brain to alcohol sensitivity and the response of the injured brain to alcohol is imperative for the treatment of TBI patients. Alcohol sensitivity has been demonstrated to be increased following experimental TBI and, in additional studies, regulated by presynaptic vesicle release mechanisms, including synapsin phosphorylation. Materials and Methods: Mice were exposed …
Aesthetic And Affective Experiences In Coffee Shops: A Deweyan Engagement With Ordinary Affects In Ordinary Spaces, Jaishikha Nautiyal
Aesthetic And Affective Experiences In Coffee Shops: A Deweyan Engagement With Ordinary Affects In Ordinary Spaces, Jaishikha Nautiyal
Education and Culture
Can everyday spaces, such as coffee shops bustling with rapid activity, promise an aesthetic experience that remains untapped and undertheorized? If so, what kinds of communicative habits make the coffee shop experience aesthetically wholesome? To this end, I engage and extend American pragmatist John Dewey’s mission of recovering aesthetic experiences in habituated processes of living in his Art as Experience and interweave it with contemporary thought on affective experiences in ordinary activities. Ultimately, I present coffee shops as exemplars of everyday third spaces (spaces other than home and work) promising the qualitative immediacy of artful, affectively rich and embodied communicative …
Art And Education In Dewey: Accomplishing Unity, Bringing Newness To The Fore, Vasco D'Agnese
Art And Education In Dewey: Accomplishing Unity, Bringing Newness To The Fore, Vasco D'Agnese
Education and Culture
The aim of this paper is to discuss the role of art in Deweyan thought, making a case for the relationship among art, experience, and education. I will do so by drawing on both Deweyan works—primarily Art as Experience and chapter nine of Experience and Nature—and scholarly literature devoted to the issue. Based on those precedents, I wish to argue that art plays a central function in Deweyan thought. Dewey conceived of art as (a) the very basis on which to deepen, enlarge, and make sense of experience; (b) the place where humans search for meaning and unity find its …
Experience And Expression, Jay Michael Hanes, Eleanor Weisman
Experience And Expression, Jay Michael Hanes, Eleanor Weisman
Education and Culture
Two artist-educators analyzed their creative process informed by John Dewey’s concepts regarding the act of expression. The essay interweaves a description of their performance piece with a discussion of conceptual processes, including intermediality and collaboration as crucial in art making, learning, and pedagogical efficacy. Both the creation of the piece and the written analysis were guided by concepts Dewey identified as compression, impulsion, and expression. The authors argue that experience and expression exemplify creative learning and are transferable to knowledge construction in all areas of inquiry. Throughout an aesthetic learning process, deep reflection plays an essential role with interpretation and …
Virtual Sonography, Joseph Blaylock
Virtual Sonography, Joseph Blaylock
Defensive Publications Series
A system and method are disclosed to ingest sonography data at a high frame rate, to generate a high quality 3D model. The system could comprise standard sonography equipment, coupled to a computer with graphics display and machine learning software. The method works by a user generating 2D ultrasonic images of an object, which are sent to the computer. The machine-learning system then uses the sonography data to create 3D models from collections of 2D video, and creates a platonic 3D model of the subject. While the user is scanning the object, the system then presents gaps in the 3D …
