The Role Of Phenotypic Plasticity In The Adaptive Evolution Of Fundulus Heteroclitus, David Isaac Dayan
The Role Of Phenotypic Plasticity In The Adaptive Evolution Of Fundulus Heteroclitus, David Isaac Dayan
Open Access Dissertations
Phenotypic plasticity is the ability of a single genotype to produce multiple phenotypes in response to the environment. Because phenotypic plasticity mediates the relationship between genetic variation and the traits that are ultimately subjected to selection, phenotypic plasticity has the potential to influence evolutionary trajectories and contribute to the accumulation and release of cryptic genetic variation. This dissertation investigates both of these themes using a combination of trait level approaches and population genomics. First, the dissertation focuses on variation at the trait level in chapters 2 and 3. Chapter two uses a genome wide association study to demonstrates that the …
The Establishment And Characterization Of Primary Cell Cultures Derived From The Ctenophore Mnemiopsis Leidyi, Kaitlyn J. Warren
The Establishment And Characterization Of Primary Cell Cultures Derived From The Ctenophore Mnemiopsis Leidyi, Kaitlyn J. Warren
Open Access Theses
We have developed a primary cell culture system that can be utilized to isolate adult somatic cell types from Mnemiopsis leidyi, a lobate Ctenophore. Our primary cell cultures are derived from tissue explants and maintained in a complex undefined media, which is generated from tissue isolated from Ctenophore lobes. Approximately 24 hours after explant removal, cultures are screened for the presence of desired cell types. These primary cell cultures can be reliably maintained and visually monitored for a variety of parameters including proliferation, changes in cell morphology and/or differentiation. Exemplar cell types that are easily isolated from primary cultures …

The Psychological Flexibility Model And Ptsd Intrusion Symptoms, Kaylin Jones
The Psychological Flexibility Model And Ptsd Intrusion Symptoms, Kaylin Jones
Dissertations
The psychological flexibility model offers a lens through which to view the development and maintenance of PTSD symptoms. The model consists of six behavioral processes, including cognitive fusion, experiential avoidance, and lack of contact with the present moment, which are said to interact with each other to either resolve or maintain symptoms of PTSD. The mediation models proposed within the psychological flexibility model have yet to be examined within any sample. This study examined the relationships between cognitive fusion, experiential avoidance, lack of contact with the present moment, and PTSD intrusion symptoms within a sample of trauma-exposed adults experiencing symptoms …
Fibropapillomatosis In Marine Turtles: A Comprehensive Review, Samantha L. Mccorkle
Fibropapillomatosis In Marine Turtles: A Comprehensive Review, Samantha L. Mccorkle
HCNSO Student Capstones
Fibropapillomatosis is a disease that affects six of the seven species of marine turtles. The disease was first noticed in 1928, and wasn’t observed again until the 1970s. By the 1980s there was a rapid spread of fibropapillomatosis through the sea turtle population, becoming an endemic in both Florida and Hawaii. By 1995 the concentration of disease in the population reached its climax and has showed a decline in prevalence since. After identifying a viral cause studies began to focus on cultivating the virus in the lab and sequencing, while the virus has been sequenced it has not been successfully …

Global Language Studies Faculty publications
Abstract
Three different English translations exist for Jules Verne's Le Château des Carpathes (1892). The first, by an anonymous translator, was published in London by Sampson Low in 1893 and carried the title The Castle of the Carpathians. An abridged and altered version of this same translation later reappeared in 1963 in the “Fitzroy Edition” published in London by Arco; it was retitled Carpathian Castle and was edited by I.O. Evans. In 2010 a new English translation of this novel was published in Brooklyn, New York by Melville House; it featured a significantly revised title, The Castle in Transylvania …

Alienation And Fragmentation: The Poetry Of War Memory In The Odyssey And E.E. Cummings, Jake Sawyer
Alienation And Fragmentation: The Poetry Of War Memory In The Odyssey And E.E. Cummings, Jake Sawyer
Studies in Mediterranean Antiquity and Classics
Current Homeric war trauma scholarship surrounding the Odyssey often has a limited, though brilliantly constructed focus looking only at Odysseus’ personal experience through psychological models. By engaging with other war poetry, specifically the work of the American poet and World War I veteran E.E. Cummings, new perspectives about war trauma and the military to civilian transition are brought to the Odyssey. This paper uses both the psychological models and an analysis of E.E. Cummings poetry in order to draw comparison to the epic and expand the scope of current scholarship by including the characters of Agamemnon and Menelaus. By looking …

A Landscape And Systems Ecology Approach For Predicting Fish Concentration In Seasonally Pulsed And Spatially Heterogeneous Wetlands, Simeon Yurek
Open Access Dissertations
Seasonal pulsing of hydrology in the Greater Everglades watershed produces dynamic, annual cycles of wetland flooding and drying, and of environmental conditions. Biota have adapted to exploit these pulses through movement and foraging behaviors. A primary ecological concern, pertinent to Everglades restoration, is to understand how sufficient concentration of aquatic biomass, particularly that of small fish and invertebrates, is produced under nutrient limited conditions, to support diverse and abundant communities of piscivorous predators, such as wading birds and herpetofauna. This question is investigated through computer simulation modeling of small−bodied fishes in the freshwater Everglades, and analyses of empirical monitoring data …
Acoustic Green's Function Extraction In The Ocean, Xiaoqin Zang
Acoustic Green's Function Extraction In The Ocean, Xiaoqin Zang
Open Access Dissertations
The acoustic Green's function (GF) is the key to understanding the acoustic properties of ocean environments. With knowledge of the acoustic GF, the physics of sound propagation, such as dispersion, can be analyzed; underwater communication over thousands of miles can be understood; physical properties of the ocean, including ocean temperature, ocean current speed, as well as seafloor bathymetry, can be investigated. Experimental methods of acoustic GF extraction can be categorized as active methods and passive methods. Active methods are based on employment of man-made sound sources. These active methods require less computational complexity and time, but may cause harm to …

Objectives—Despite well-known fitness advantages to males who produce and maintain high endogenous testosterone levels, such phenotypes may be costly if testosterone-mediated investment in reproductive effort trade-off against investment in somatic maintenance. Previous studies of androgen-mediated trade-offs in human immune function find mixed results, in part because most studies either focus on a few indicators of immunity, are confounded by phenotypic correlation, or are observational. Here the association between male endogenous testosterone and 13 circulating cytokines are examined before and after ex vivo antigen stimulation with phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) and lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in a high pathogen population of Bolivian forager-horticulturalists.

© The Animal Consortium 2015. The abundance and cross-linking of intramuscular connective tissue contributes to the background toughness of meat, and is thus undesirable. Connective tissue is mainly synthesized by intramuscular fibroblasts. Myocytes, adipocytes and fibroblasts are derived from a common pool of progenitor cells during the early embryonic development. It appears that multipotent mesenchymal stem cells first diverge into either myogenic or non-myogenic lineages; non-myogenic mesenchymal progenitors then develop into the stromal-vascular fraction of skeletal muscle wherein adipocytes, fibroblasts and derived mesenchymal progenitors reside. Because non-myogenic mesenchymal progenitors mainly undergo adipogenic or fibrogenic differentiation during muscle development, strengthening progenitor …
