The Effects Of Ketamine Exposure On Nmda Receptor Mediated Synaptic Transmission In The Developing Brain - A Mechanistic Study Of Ketamine-Induced Neuroapoptosis, Saurabh Kokane
Psychology Theses - Archive
Ketamine is a widely used pediatric anesthetic because of its high potency in pediatric patients. Side-effects produced by ketamine anesthesia in adults are also not seen in children after ketamine use. However, several preclinical studies have shown that prolonged or repeated exposure of neonates to ketamine resulted in widespread death of neurons (neuroapoptosis) in almost all areas of the neonatal brain (Brambrink et al, 2012; Hayashi et al, 2002; Ikonomidou et al, 1999; Scallet et al, 2004; Zou et al, 2009a, b). Increasing evidence shows that this neuroapoptosis affects prenatal and neonatal brain adversely, specifically in brain areas involved in …
Design And Evaluation Of Hmp Kinase Analogs As Thiamine Pathway Inhibitors, Diego A. Lopez
Design And Evaluation Of Hmp Kinase Analogs As Thiamine Pathway Inhibitors, Diego A. Lopez
Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive
Current bacterial chemotherapy faces an overwhelming reduction in efficacy due to an increase in bacterial resistance; resulting in a higher clinical demand for novel therapeutics and the investigation for their respective targets. Vitamin pathways exogenous to the human body represent an attractive target for drug development since the enzymatic machinery is solely and ubiquitously to many infectious agents. HMP kinase [E.C 2.7.1.49] is a key enzyme in the thiamine metabolism. It catalyzes two subsequent phosphorylations of 4-amino-5-hydroxymethyl-2-methylpyrimidine (HMP), making it indispensable for microbial survival. Our efforts aimed for a substrate-based approach, where over 50 HMP analogs were synthesized and assayed …
Derivatization Of Small Acids To Enhance Sensitivity In Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry And Gas Chromatography Vacuum Ultraviolet Spectroscopy, Chih-Hao Wang
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses - Archive
Disinfection by-products (DBPs) are a significant concern in drinking water quality. Haloacetic acids, which are generated from disinfection processes, are one of the major groups in disinfection by-products. Because they induce potential harmful effects for human health, the US government has already established regulations to control the levels of haloacetic acids in drinking water. In order to control the presence of haloacetic acids in drinking water and monitor other potential harmful compounds, an appropriate analytical method is needed. In this study, a gas chromatography (GC) method was developed for detecting haloacetic acids in water. Three different derivatization reagents were compared …
Method Development For Qualification And Quantification Of Cannabinoids And Terpenes In Extracts By Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Allegra Leghissa
Method Development For Qualification And Quantification Of Cannabinoids And Terpenes In Extracts By Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Allegra Leghissa
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses - Archive
Cannabinoids are a class of chemical compounds that act on cannabinoid receptors in cells. These receptors have different kinds of ligands, including endocannabinoids (produced in the body by humans and animals), phytocannabinoids (found mainly in Cannabis sativa), and synthetic cannabinoids. At least 85 different phytocannabinoids have been isolated; different cannabinoids are believed to have different effects and possible benefits in medical treatments, and it is therefore fundamental to classify cultivars prior to their medical use. The other class of compounds that characterize C.sativa are terpenes. They confer flavor and fragrance that are unique to each plant and further confer botanical …
Urban Ecology In North Texas: Native Plants And Nitrogen Deposition, Michelle Lynn Green
Urban Ecology In North Texas: Native Plants And Nitrogen Deposition, Michelle Lynn Green
Biology Dissertations - Archive
Globally, the human population continues to grow and move into urban areas causing a range of effects on local ecosystems. Elevated temperatures, altered hydrology, and higher concentrations of atmospheric pollutants in urban environments create novel conditions for resident organisms. My research focused on one particular aspect of human alteration to urban environments – nitrogen (N) deposition – and its effects on native plants across an urban to rural gradient in the southern Great Plains, North Texas (NTX), USA. Nitrogen oxides (NOx) – the product of combustion and precursor to nitrate deposition in precipitation – were significantly positively correlated with impervious …
Exploring Engagement With Social Media Content, Holly Atwood Syrdal
Exploring Engagement With Social Media Content, Holly Atwood Syrdal
Marketing Dissertations - Archive
Engagement in the realm of social media is thought to be related to a number of positive brand and organizational outcomes and has emerged as a hot topic among marketing academics and practitioners alike. However, there is currently no consensus on exactly what constitutes this type of engagement. This lack of agreement and, hence, lack of a “social media engagement” measure, have made it difficult for academics to advance theory in this area and for researchers to test hypotheses concerning positive brand and organizational outcomes that may be related to this form of engagement. This dissertation directly addresses this gap …

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2dm) Onset And "Remission"., Srikanth Tangelloju
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2dm) Onset And "Remission"., Srikanth Tangelloju
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a progressive disease condition. As the disease progresses the function of beta (β) cells (cells which regulate insulin) decline, thereby increasing the circulating blood glucose levels. If left unmanaged the disease progresses from onset to development of T2DM related complications and eventually death. When managed, in certain individuals, T2DM onset can be prevented and/or slowed down and in certain T2DM individuals, remission is observed. There are some known modifiable risk factors such as diet and physical activities that are associated with the speed and direction of progression, but much is still unknown. In …
Air Pollution, Pulmonary Oxidative Stress, And The Endothelin System In The Development Of Cardiovascular Injury., Jordan B. Finch
Air Pollution, Pulmonary Oxidative Stress, And The Endothelin System In The Development Of Cardiovascular Injury., Jordan B. Finch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this project was to examine the role of endothelin-1 (ET-1) as a mediator in the pathway between air pollution exposure and the development of vascular injury. A human cohort and male mice (C57BL/6 and ecSOD-Tg) were used to evaluate changes in the ET-1 system in response to exposures of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Human ET-1 levels were significantly associated with environmental factors and markers of vascular change, but were decreased with increased PM2.5. No association was seen between ET-1 and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) except for EPC-4, possibly indicating a regulatory relationship with this specific population. In …
Vinyl Chloride-Diet Interactions In Liver Disease : Potential Roles Of Autophagy And Energy Management., Anna L. Lang
Vinyl Chloride-Diet Interactions In Liver Disease : Potential Roles Of Autophagy And Energy Management., Anna L. Lang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Vinyl chloride (VC) is a prevalent environmental toxicant that has been shown to cause liver injury at high, occupational exposures. However, most studies have not addressed interactions of low doses with risk-modifying factors. This study aims to explore low-level VC metabolite exposure interactions with other potential risk-modifying factors and their effect on underlying liver disease. We examined sub-hepatotoxic effects of a VC metabolite (chloroethanol, CE) in two murine models of liver injury using ethanol and lipopolysaccharide (LPS). In both, CE significantly enhanced liver injury when compared to either ethanol or LPS alone. Previous studies have shown an increase in mTOR …
Effects Of Attachment Style, Coping Strategy, Social Support And Spirituality On Parental Grief Among Older Chinese Parents : Structural Equation Modeling., Yongqiang Zheng
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Most modern grief theories and clinical working models are constructed in the context of Western culture, and the effectiveness or explanatory power of those theories and models have not been fully tested in other cultures, especially through a more complex interactive model. The current study focuses on the role of attachment style, coping strategy, social support and spirituality on older bereaved parents’ grief. It also explores if differences in age, gender, causes of the child’s death, time since the death have a differential effect on parental grief. The purpose of this study was to test the main factors effectively mediating …

Polyandry In The Absence Of Fitness Benefits In A Species With Female-Biased Sexual Size Dimorphism, Marie Claire Chelini, Eileen A. Hebets
Eileen Hebets Publications
Most studies exploring the evolution of female mating systems focus on species in which females are either monandric (mate with a single male) or highly polyandric (mate with multiple males), but less is understood about variation in mating decisions within a species. How and why do females of a single species decide whether or not to copulate with additional mates? In this study we attempt to answer this question in the highly dimorphic crab spider, Mecaphesa celer, whose females may be either monandric or polyandric. We tested three hypotheses: (1) a female’s decision to remate is based on sequential mate …
Effects Of Invasive Shrub Honeysuckle (Lonicera Maackii) And Forest Composition On Bird Communities In Woodland Stands., Katie Rae Lynch
Effects Of Invasive Shrub Honeysuckle (Lonicera Maackii) And Forest Composition On Bird Communities In Woodland Stands., Katie Rae Lynch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Invasive species pose a threat to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems by decreasing biodiversity (Didham et al. 2005). Amur bush honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii) has typically reduced native plant diversity and altered animal communities by influencing animal abundance and activity (Collier and Vankat 2002). This study was intended to determine whether honeysuckle density or other characteristics of forested stands influence avian diversity, whether impacts are seasonally dependent, and whether correlations exist between attributes of forested stands and honeysuckle density. In order to test the hypotheses, thirteen forest stands within the Louisville Metropolitan Area were selected. They had similar tree composition …

Mechanisms Responsible For The Development Of Causal Perception In Infancy., Nicholas A. Holt
Mechanisms Responsible For The Development Of Causal Perception In Infancy., Nicholas A. Holt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The aim of the current dissertation was to investigate the mechanisms that contribute to the emergence of causal perception in infancy. Previous research suggests that the experience of self-produced causal action may be necessary to promote the development of causal perception (Rakison & Krogh, 2012). The goal of the current study was two-fold: (1) to further explore the roles of self-produced action, haptic, proprioceptive and visual information, and parental interaction on young infants’ understanding of causality. To assess the impact of these factors on infants’ causal learning, 4½-month-olds were randomly assigned to one four conditions. Three of the conditions (Active …
Carnosine, A Therapeutic Potential For Critical Limb Ischemic., Adjoa Agyemang Boakye
Carnosine, A Therapeutic Potential For Critical Limb Ischemic., Adjoa Agyemang Boakye
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Critical Limb ischemia (CLI) is a serious manifestation of peripheral artery disease. Advanced CLI patients are poor candidates for vascular surgeries. Numerous studies have shown that hypoxia inducible factor 1α (HIF1-α) plays an important role in recovery from murine hindlimb ischemia (HLI). HIF1-α is regulated by oxygen dependent prolyl hydroxylases (PHDs). Previous studies have shown that inhibition of PHDs by metal quenchers and viral delivery of HIF1-α improves blood flow to the ischemic limb. However, clinical trials with these therapies are largely negative partly because they do not address the underlying chronic oxidative stress. Based on recent observations that endogenous …
Comparative Analyses Of Transcriptome Data From Beef Cattle Persistently Infected With Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus, Sara Michelle Nilson
Comparative Analyses Of Transcriptome Data From Beef Cattle Persistently Infected With Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus, Sara Michelle Nilson
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Persistent infection (PI) with Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDV) is a major source of economic loss for the livestock industry. Persistent infection occurs when a dam is exposed to the virus during 42 to 125 days of gestation and the virus is passed to the fetus without an adaptive immune response. These PI calves serve as continuous sources of infection to others. The identification of differences in expression of gene networks and/or genetic markers associated with infection could assist in the development of novel strategies to prevent, control, or treat BVDV. To examine the host response to PI, RNA-Seq data …
Genome-Wide Association Study For Feed Efficiency Traits Using Snp And Haplotype Models, Kashly Rene Schweer
Genome-Wide Association Study For Feed Efficiency Traits Using Snp And Haplotype Models, Kashly Rene Schweer
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Feed efficiency has long been recognized for its economic importance in beef cattle production systems. Feed intake is not a routinely collected trait on-farm due to the expense of measuring individual feed intake. Identification of genomic regions associated with feed efficiency and its component traits would be advantageous for selection programs. The objective of this study was to uncover genomic regions associated with average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) through genome-wide association studies (GWAS) with SNP and haplotype Bayesian models. Phenotypes of ADG and ADFI along with genotypes from the BovineSNP50v2 array from crossbred steers and …

Development Of Terminal And Maternal Economic Selection Indices In Beefmaster Cattle, Kathleen Pearl Ochsner
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In the design of economic selection indices, the relative importance of traits in the breeding objective is reflected by their relative economic weighting. The objective of this study was to develop two economic selection indices for Beefmaster cattle: one for a terminal production system and one for a maternal production system. The terminal index was developed assuming bulls are mated to mature cows with all resulting progeny harvested. The maternal index was developed assuming bulls are mated to a combination of heifers and mature cows, with resulting progeny retained as replacements or sold at weaning.

Impact Of Finishing Diets With De-Oiled Distillers Grains Or Antioxidant Containing Supplement On Beef Shelf Life, Katherine I. Domenech-Pérez
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In its entirety this dissertation intended to address the impact of feeding several forms of de-oiled corn distillers grains plus solubles and the effect of supplementing OmniGen-AF as a potential antioxidant source for extending beef shelf life. In study one we learned that despite the de-oiling process, greater inclusion levels (65%, DM basis) of de-oiled wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) causes an increase in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) similar to the levels obtained with full-fat WDGS. Lower inclusion levels (35 and 50%, DM basis) of de-oiled WDGS have intermediate PUFA content in comparison to 65% de-oiled WDGS, full-fat WDGS …

Radiation therapy is an effective cancer treatment modality although tumors invariably become resistant. Using the transgenic adenocarcinoma of mouse prostate (TRAMP) model system, we report that a hypofractionated radiation schedule (10 Gy/day for 5 consecutive days) effectively blocks prostate tumor growth in wild type (β1wt /TRAMP) mice as well as in mice carrying a conditional ablation of β1 integrins in the prostatic epithelium (β1pc-/- /TRAMP). Since JNK is known to be suppressed by β1 integrins and mediates radiation-induced apoptosis, we tested the effect of SP600125, an inhibitor of c-Jun amino-terminal kinase (JNK) in the TRAMP model system. Our results show …
