KIP Articles

Bats carry and shed many emerging infectious disease agents including Ebola virus and SARS-like Coronaviruses, yet they rarely display clinical symptoms of infection. Bat epithelial or fibroblast cell lines were previously established to study the bat immune response against viral infection. However, the lack of professional immune cells such as dendritic cells (DC) and macrophages has greatly limited the significance of current investigations. Using Pteropus alecto (P. alecto ) GM-CSF plus IL4, FLT3L and CSF-1, we successfully generated bat bone marrow-derived DC and macrophages. Cells with the phenotype, morphology and functional features of monocyte-derived DC, bona fide DC or macrophages …

A Review Of Present And Alternative Lionfish Controls In The Western Atlantic, Adam Rittermann Dec 2016

A Review Of Present And Alternative Lionfish Controls In The Western Atlantic, Adam Rittermann

HCNSO Student Capstones

Lionfish (Pterois volitans and Pterois miles) are the first recorded invasive piscivore in the Caribbean and have become a threat to native species. As generalist consumers, lionfish have a broad diet and reduce prey and competitor abundance and juvenile recruitment. To confront this problem, this paper serves to review all of the current and alternative future controls available to manage lionfish populations in the Western Atlantic and determine where focus is lacking. Derby and cull efforts are the only management efforts in place and are not effective in their current state as these local events have short-term benefits, …

Using Gis To Predict Cetacean Strandings Related To Harmful Algal Blooms, Jessica L. Boyd

HCNSO Student Capstones

Exposure to harmful algal bloom (HAB) toxins, such as Karenia brevis, has been linked to cetacean strandings and mortalities. Biological and environmental data from a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) Unusual Mortality Event (UME) in 2004 are compared to those from pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus) mass stranding events in 2013-2014 in western Florida. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) maps have been created by overlaying stranding locations and select K. brevis presence data in order to identify common spatial and temporal trends. Preliminary results indicate that elevated K. brevis levels (>10,000 cells/L) in Sarasota Bay during January-February and November may …

Exploring Psychological Territoriality Through The Domestic Gothic In Beloved And Mama Day, Lori L. Cook Dec 2016

Exploring Psychological Territoriality Through The Domestic Gothic In Beloved And Mama Day, Lori L. Cook

English Department Theses

The novels, Beloved, by Toni Morrison, and Mama Day, by Gloria Naylor, contain narratives of families with a history of slavery that explore how their female protagonists claim their identities within the new boundaries of freedom. Using a framework of the Domestic Gothic, this paper explores how formerly enslaved female characters claim new psychological territory in bounded domestic spaces by using the chores they were forced to perform during their times of slavery as a means to independence. Domestic duties such as cooking and gardening along with magical and religious ceremonies and acts of violence are passed down through the …

Evaluation Of Urea Hydrolysis As A Biomarker For Detecting Pathogenic Vibrio Parahaemolyticus In Clinical Isolates And Raw Oysters, Maryam Kate Mohammadi-Aragh Dec 2016

Evaluation Of Urea Hydrolysis As A Biomarker For Detecting Pathogenic Vibrio Parahaemolyticus In Clinical Isolates And Raw Oysters, Maryam Kate Mohammadi-Aragh

Theses and Dissertations

Vibrio parahaemolyticus (Vp) infection is commonly caused by the consumption of raw or undercooked shellfish. Raw oysters are associated with most Vp outbreaks. Pathogenic Vp express thermostable-direct hemolysin (tdh) and to some extent thermostable-related hemolysin (trh). Additionally, some pathogenic Vp express urease (uh). The objectives of this work were to discern any relationships between urease (uh) expression, tdh/trh expression, and hemolytic activity in pathogenic and non-pathogenic clinical strains, and to compare urease, motility, tdh/trh expression, and hemolytic activity in raw oyster isolates. This information would determine if urease could be used as a biomarker to detect pathogenic Vp. About 80% …

Dynamics Of Understory Tree Seedling Recruitment And Growth Of Advance Regeneration Following Variable-Density Thinning Of Second-Growth Conifer Stands In The Pacific Northwest, Carson James Dec 2016

Dynamics Of Understory Tree Seedling Recruitment And Growth Of Advance Regeneration Following Variable-Density Thinning Of Second-Growth Conifer Stands In The Pacific Northwest, Carson James

Theses and Dissertations

With a growing desire to generate structural characteristics of late-successional conifer forests, managers are commonly seeking an approach to increase structural heterogeneity in otherwise simple second-growth stands. This study examined understory response to experimental thinning on the Olympic Peninsula of Western Washington. Variable-density thinning within the Olympic Habitat Development Study was found to have significant effects on both the density of seedling recruitment as well as early growth of western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.). In additional analysis, pre-commercial understory thinning, implemented by the Olympic National Forest, produced no observable acceleration in basal area growth. Results suggest that understory development …

A Theoretical Analysis Of Multiproduct Mergers: Application In The Major Meat Processing Sectors, Benjamin Lee Sanderson Dec 2016

A Theoretical Analysis Of Multiproduct Mergers: Application In The Major Meat Processing Sectors, Benjamin Lee Sanderson

Theses and Dissertations

The research is motivated by the significant increase in multiproduct mergers in the meat-protein processing sector, whereby the largest firms now process beef, pork, and chicken. This thesis conducts a theoretical merger analysis, accounting for both within- and across-submarket substitution of demand related goods. The model developed is suitable for analyzing markets in which there are identifiable consumer submarkets within a larger market. The results indicate two primary findings. The first finding is that Bertrand firms have a unilateral incentive to merge. Firms involved in a given merger increase profit, as well as those not included in the merger. Second, …

Investigating The Antigen Removal Process Of Porcine Cartilage In Preparation Of Creating An Osteochondral Xenograft, Bradley Jeffery Kindred

Theses and Dissertations

With Athletes and individuals developing osteoarthritis and chondral defects at younger ages, long term treatments are in high demand. Total knee replacements only last for 10-15 years, so younger individuals would need to have multiple knee replacements within their lifetime. Allograft transplantation has shown to last long term and have high success rates, but the lack of donors and the possibility of damaging other areas of the knee to obtain tissue grafts has become a large concern. Xenografts derived from porcine cartilage is cost effective and the supply is abundant. Two antigen removal processes were examined: a short term antigen …

Biopolarity: Coral Scientists Between Hope And Despair, Irus Braverman Dec 2016

Biopolarity: Coral Scientists Between Hope And Despair, Irus Braverman

Journal Articles

Biopolarity draws on extensive interviews with dozens of coral scientists and on my observations of the international coral reef symposium in Hawaii on June 2016 to document the oscillation of coral scientists between hope and despair in their imaginations of coral futures. At one extreme of the oscillation are catastrophic predictions of the death of corals by the mid-21st century. In this despondent narrative, corals are getting fried and nothing short of an abrupt (and unlikely) shift in how humans use fossil fuels will save them. The pessimistic trajectory of this swing of the pendulum comes replete with daunting maps, …

Antigenic And Genetic Evolution Of Emerging Avian Origin Influenza A Viruses, Yifei Xu Dec 2016

Antigenic And Genetic Evolution Of Emerging Avian Origin Influenza A Viruses, Yifei Xu

Theses and Dissertations

Periodic introductions of influenza A viruses (IAVs) from wild birds contribute to emergence of novel strains that infect domestic poultry, lower mammals, and humans, but the mechanisms of emergence are unclear. The objectives of this dissertation research are to infer the genesis of two emerging IAVs, low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) H10N8 and highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H7N8 viruses, and to characterize the antigenic diversity and genetic evolution of contemporary H7 avian influenza viruses (AIVs) from North America. First, AIVs that are genetically close to the human H10N8 isolate were recovered at the live poultry market (LPM) visited by …

Utilization Of Phosphate Alternatives In Chunked And Formed Deli Ham And Marinated Chicken Breast, Carlos Seth Morris Dec 2016

Utilization Of Phosphate Alternatives In Chunked And Formed Deli Ham And Marinated Chicken Breast, Carlos Seth Morris

Theses and Dissertations

Porcine Semimembranosus muscles were vacuum tumbled with phosphate, without phosphate, fiber dry vinegar, or whey protein concentrate (WPC). Consumers preferred (P<0.05) deli ham with phosphate, without phosphate and WPC over the oat fiber with vinegar treatment. In addition, the phosphate treatment had less cooking loss, (P<0.05) greater bind strength (P<0.05) and more intact slices (P<0.05) than other treatments. In addition, WPC produced ham with a higher (P<0.05) CIE l* and a lower (P<0.05) b* value than other treatments. Consumers preferred (P<0.05) chicken breasts marinated with phosphate with respect to flavor and aroma over the negative phosphate treatment and oat fiber treatments. Chicken breast with phosphate increased pH and had less cooking loss (P<0.05) as compared to chicken with WPC and without phosphate. Results indicated that oat fiber has potential as a phosphate replacer in marinated chicken, and WPC has potential as a phosphate replacer in deli ham.

Identification And Genetic Characterization Of Antimicrobial Activities Of Pseudomonas Mississippiensis, A Novel Bacterial Species Isolated From Soybean Rhizosphere, Jiayuan Jia

Theses and Dissertations

An aerobic, Gram-negative, rod shaped and polarlagellated bacterium, designated strain MS586, was isolated from soybean rhizosphere in Mississippi. The taxonomic position of MS586 was determined using a polyphasic approach. Analysis of the housekeeping genes supported the novel position of MS586. The results were also supported by average nucleotide identity (ANI) values. Based on these data, it is proposed that strain MS586 represents a novel species, Pseudomonas mississippiensis, within the genus Pseudomonas. The type strain is MS586. Strain MS586 showed a broad-spectrum of antimicrobial activity against plant pathogenic bacteria and fungi that are economically important in agriculture. Preliminary studies using transposon-based …

The results showed that the Mississippi State University Extension agent evaluation …

Spatial And Trophic Niche Specialization In Castor Canadensis, Robert Antonio Francis Dec 2016

Spatial And Trophic Niche Specialization In Castor Canadensis, Robert Antonio Francis

Theses and Dissertations

The Hutchinsonian niche is the n dimensional hyper volume that allows for the persistence of a species. Castor canadensis, a large semi-aquatic rodent, is an ecosystem engineer and often a keystone species for many ecosystems. I examined the effect of multiple spatial scales on hierarchical habitat selection byC. canadensis using presence-only modeling techniques. I also determined individual trophic niche specialization in C. canadensis utilizing stable isotope analysis. I concluded that C. canadensis displayed scale independent habitat selection when comparing landscape and fine spatial scales. Individual trophic niche specialization occurred in colonies of the same resource availability. Also, individual trophic niches …

Domestic Use Of Space In An Iron Age House From Tell Halif, Israel, Jared Brian Wilson Dec 2016

Domestic Use Of Space In An Iron Age House From Tell Halif, Israel, Jared Brian Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

Although household archaeology has been around for a number of years now, it has been slow to truly catch on as a way to learn something about the people of ancient Israel as a whole. Many archaeologists historically were only interested in the monumental architecture like: “palatial and storage complexes, cultic complexes, cemeteries, and fortification systems” (Hardin 2011:12). Archaeologists have realized that studying the basic housing and activity areas of the people that inhabit cities and the outlying areas lead them to have a greater understanding of what is really happening on a day-to-day basis. Understanding what is happening in …

Droplet Impact On Dry, Superhydrophobic Surfaces With Micro-Scale Roughness Elements, Nadine Boufous Dec 2016

Droplet Impact On Dry, Superhydrophobic Surfaces With Micro-Scale Roughness Elements, Nadine Boufous

Theses and Dissertations

Most aircraft accidents are caused by technical problems or weather-related issues. One cause of weather-related incidents is inlight icing, which can induce negative performance characteristics and endanger the operation of an airplane. Various researchers investigating the problem of inlight icing have proposed ice-phobic coatings as one viable solution. For this purpose, it is critical to study the behavior of a droplet impact on different types of surfaces. As an alternative to physical testing, three-dimensional numerical simulation using computational fluid dynamics offers a promising strategy for evaluating the effects of surface characteristics. Using the volume of fluid method, three simulations of …

Fall Migrant Waterbird Community Structure And Stable Isotope Ecology In The Mississippi Alluvial Valley And Northern Gulf Of Mexico: Use Of Migratory Bird Habitat Initiative Sites And Other Wetlands, Justyn Richard Foth

Theses and Dissertations

The Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV) was dominated by extensive lowland forests, but during the 20th century most of the MAV was converted to agricultural, aquaculture, and other human uses. These land-use changes created stopover migration and wintering habitats for waterfowl, shorebirds and other waterbird species. Before landscape modification of the MAV, shorebirds likely migrated past the MAV to wetlands along the northern Gulf of Mexico (NGoM). In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill impacted coastal marshes of the NGoM. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service implemented the Migratory Bird Habitat Initiative (MBHI) to provide waterbirds with wetlands inland of oil-impacted …
