Are Cattle Surrogate Wildlife? Savanna Plant Community Composition Explained By Total Herbivory More Than Herbivore Type, Kari E. Veblen, Lauren M. Porensky, Corinna Riginos, Truman P. Young

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

The widespread replacement of wild ungulate herbivores by domestic livestock in African savannas is composed of two interrelated phenomena: (1) loss or reduction in numbers of individual wildlife species or guilds and (2) addition of livestock to the system. Each can have important implications for plant community dynamics. Yet very few studies have experimentally addressed the individual, combined, and potentially interactive effects of wild vs. domestic herbivore species on herbaceous plant communities within a single system. Additionally, there is little information about whether, and in which contexts, livestock might functionally replace native herbivore wildlife or, alternatively, have fundamentally different effects …

The Bilingual Brain, Victoria A. James

Journal of Counseling and Psychology

This literature review explores the neurocognitive effects of the bilingual brain. Many areas of bilingualism are examined such as age of acquisition, which is when the second language is attained, and memory. The three types of bilingual memory are implicit memory, which is procedural memory, explicit memory, which is declarative memory, and episodic memory, which is autobiographical memory. In relation to the bilingual brain, cognition, control, and /lateralization are also reviewed. Finally, second language (L2) learning strategies are considered. The objective of this study is to obtain an understanding on how two or more languages are acquired and processed in …

Playing With The History Of Middle Earth: Board Games, Transmedia Storytelling, And The Lord Of The Rings, Adam Brown, Deb Waterhouse-Watson Sep 2016

Playing With The History Of Middle Earth: Board Games, Transmedia Storytelling, And The Lord Of The Rings, Adam Brown, Deb Waterhouse-Watson

Journal of Tolkien Research

Contemporary cases of transmedia storytelling have thrown many conventional understandings of ‘adaptation’ into disarray. The resurgence of tabletop game culture has thus far played a significant role in this, though scholars have largely neglected the subject, particularly in terms of how transmedia relationships reconfigure the meaning(s) shaped by and through games by players. This paper addresses this phenomenon through a close analysis of two board games based on The Lord of the Rings, in which the (re)construction of the story-world of the source text(s) impacts strongly on ‘conventional’ modes of narrative and identification. Governed by the adoption of various …

"The Effort To Translate": Fan Film Culture And The Works Of J.R.R. Tolkien, Maria Alberto Sep 2016

"The Effort To Translate": Fan Film Culture And The Works Of J.R.R. Tolkien, Maria Alberto

Journal of Tolkien Research

In his 1940 preface “On Translating Beowulf,” J.R.R. Tolkien contends that “The effort to translate, or to improve a translation, is valuable, not so much for the version it produces, as for the understanding of the original which it awakes” (53). Though made with a specific literary tradition in mind, Tolkien’s assertion about the value of translation bears re-visitation in light of circumstances where the terminology has shifted. Specifically, Tolkien’s own work has since become the myth undergoing translation, and in popular parlance, translation itself has changed from simply describing the transference of a text between languages to now include …

China And Africa’S Peace And Security Agenda: The Burgeoning Appetite, Oita Etyang, Simon Oswan Panyako

Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies

China and Africa have had contacts since time immemorial. It is, however, in the last two decades that China vastly increased its engagement with Africa, following the first Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) that took place in 2000 and the Beijing Summit held in 2006. China has skillfully utilized its international strategy of multipolarity and non-interference to champion its economic interests as well as its hegemonic quest. It is undeniable that China has heavily invested in Africa through Foreign Direct Investments (FDI), and infrastructure development. China has also increased its appetite on matters peace and security. …

Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies

The article assesses the socio-economic and human repercussions of one of the fiercest ethnic conflicts in Ghana’s Northern Region on people and society. While Ghana remains a stable democracy, sporadic ethnic and chieftaincy conflicts have been a recurrent feature of the political process. Analyzing data from survey opinions and interviews from wide spectrum of respondents, the study noted that the Nawuri-Gonja conflicts have destroyed the fabric of the society leaving behind squalor, breakdown of healthcare, education and psychological trauma. Women and children have suffered rape assaults and unprecedented high rate of mortality due to malnourishments respectively. The plights of these …

Conflict Of Interest In Exploitation And Utilisation Of Transboundary Natural Resources On Lake Victoria, Edmond M. Were Sep 2016

Conflict Of Interest In Exploitation And Utilisation Of Transboundary Natural Resources On Lake Victoria, Edmond M. Were

Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies

The management of Lake Victoria as a “regional common” is expected to adhere to the global principles of transboundary natural resource management. However, national interest and power asymmetry amongst riparian states buoyed by external demand have overwhelmed global and regional norms leading to incessant exploitation of the common resources. This paper uses idealist and realist perspectives of power relations to inform the analysis of conflicting interests in transboundary natural resource exploitation. It partly relies on 2012-2013 primary data from purposively selected Beach Management Units in Kenya and Uganda and secondary data from regional fisheries institutions. Notwithstanding the normative value of …

Sending Out An Sos: Mitochondria As A Signaling Hub, Iryna Bohovych, Oleh Khalimonchuk Sep 2016

Sending Out An Sos: Mitochondria As A Signaling Hub, Iryna Bohovych, Oleh Khalimonchuk

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Normal cellular physiology is critically dependent on numerous mitochondrial activities including energy conversion, cofactor and precursor metabolite synthesis, and regulation of ion and redox homeostasis. Advances in mitochondrial research during the last two decades provide solid evidence that these organelles are deeply integrated with the rest of the cell and multiple mechanisms are in place to monitor and communicate functional states of mitochondria. In many cases, however, the exact molecular nature of various mitochondria-to-cell communication pathways is only beginning to emerge. Here, we review various signals emitted by distressed or dysfunctional mitochondria and the stress-responsive pathways activated in response to …

Extended Therapeutic Window Of A Novel Peptide Inhibitor Of Trpm2 Channels Following Focal Cerebral Ischemia, Venugopal Reddy Venna Sep 2016

Extended Therapeutic Window Of A Novel Peptide Inhibitor Of Trpm2 Channels Following Focal Cerebral Ischemia, Venugopal Reddy Venna

UCHC Articles - Research

Abstract

Introduction

TRPM2 channels have been suggested to play a role in ischemic neuronal injury, specifically in males. A major hindrance to TRPM2 research has been the lack of specific TRPM2 inhibitors. The current study characterized the specificity and neuroprotective efficacy of a novel TRPM2 inhibitor.

Methods

Fluorescent calcium imaging (Fluo5F) was used to determine inhibitor efficacy of the TRPM2 peptide inhibitor (tat-M2NX) in HEK293 cells stably expressing hTRPM2. Adult (2–3months) and aged (18–20 months) mice were subjected to 60 min middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) and injected with tat-M2NX, control scrambled peptide (tat-SCR) or clotrimazole (CTZ) either 20 min …

Is The Injury Real?: The Seventh Circuit Extends Article Iii Standing To Data Breach Victims, Emily P. Linehan Sep 2016

Is The Injury Real?: The Seventh Circuit Extends Article Iii Standing To Data Breach Victims, Emily P. Linehan

Seventh Circuit Review

Data breaches are becoming a more frequent and more troubling part of modern life. When customer or employee information is stolen en masse, lawsuits often follow. Courts have frequently dismissed such cases very early for want of Article III standing. For purposes of standing, courts are faced with the question of whether or not the fact of a breach is sufficient for plaintiffs to bring lawsuits against the credit card companies, employers, or stores that, as victims of a cyberattack, have compromised the information of hundreds or thousands. But the real victims are those whose personal information has been stolen. …

Filming Police & Legal Dramas: Examining The Influence Of Television Programs On The Legal Profession And Law Enforcement, Ryan D. Suniga Sep 2016

Filming Police & Legal Dramas: Examining The Influence Of Television Programs On The Legal Profession And Law Enforcement, Ryan D. Suniga

Seventh Circuit Review

Criminal trials make for inherently compelling television. There are very few things as dramatic as watching an individual being forced to defend their liberty. Because of the spectacle associated with criminal proceedings, the legal drama has evolved into a staple of television programing. Media programing like Serial and Making a Murderer can have profound effects on the operation and integrity of criminal proceedings. While televising criminal justice proceedings adds a level of accountability to those procedures, it also creates an opportunity for abuse by allowing the media to negatively influence individuals vital to the integrity of the criminal justice system …

Antibiotic Resistance: Emergence And Solutions, Angel Treasa Alex, Giridhar Sivalanka, Shawinki Rai

Manipal Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Antibiotic resistance is one of the leading medical crises in the world today. The antibiotic resistant strains are presenting a serious threat to the health of individuals. The strains of Staphylococcus aureus, which are untreatable by any existing antibiotics, were developed already. According to World Health Organization, 4,80,000 people develop drug resistant tuberculosis each year, globally. Ever since the antibiotics were discovered, the resistant strains have been challenging the efficacy of the developed antibiotics. This crisis has been due to the lack of new drugs and due to the misuse of the existing antibiotics. This review presents the emergence, molecular …
