Histone deacetylases (HDACs) are enzymes that regulate gene expression by modifying chromatin structure through removal of acetyl groups from target histones or non-histone proteins. Previous in vitro studies suggest that HDACs may be novel pharmacological targets in immune-mediated islet β-cell destruction. However, the role of specific HDAC in islet β-cell development and function remain unclear. Here, we generated a conditional islet β-cells specific HDAC3 deletion mouse model to determine the consequences of HDAC3 depletion on islet β-cell differentiation, maintenance and function. Islet morphology, insulin secretion, glucose tolerance, and multiple low-dose streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes incidence were evaluated and compared between HDAC3 …

Influence Of Source Credibility On Consumer Acceptance Of Genetically Modified Foods In China, Mingyang Zhang, Chao Chen, Wuyang Hu, Lijun Chen, Jintao Zhan

Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

This paper examines the reasoning mechanism behind the consumer acceptance of genetically modified foods (GMFs) in China, and investigates influence of source credibility on consumer acceptance of GMFs. Based on the original Persuasion Model—which was developed by Carl Hovland, an American psychologist and pioneer in the study of communication and its effect on attitudes and beliefs—we conducted a survey using multistage sampling from 1167 urban residents, which were proportionally selected from six cities in three economic regions (south, central, and north) in the Jiangsu province through face to face interviews. Mixed-process regression that could correct endogeneity and ordered probit model …

Cutting taxes in order to spur economic development

is an idea still making its way around

the political landscape. It doesn’t seem to matter

how many times “trickle down” economics has

been debunked not only by economists, but also

by history, it seems to linger. Yet, this is part of

an ideology that is considered as gospel by many

politicians.

Of course the idea has one superficial appeal

and one superficial appeal only. It promises to

cut taxes, even if the ones who benefit the most

from such policies are the ones who need them

the least.

How Do Children Become Workers? Making Sense Of Conflicting Accounts Of Cultural Transmission In Anthropology And Psychology, David F. Lancy, Christopher A.J. Little

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

This article uses children’s work as a lens to examine methodological concerns in the study of cultural transmission and children’s learning of useful domestic and subsistence skills. We begin by providing a review of the relevant literature concerning cultural transmission in the context of the ethnographic record, as well as more recent studies originating largely from psychology. We then offer an ethnographic case study concerning Asabano (PNG [Papua New Guinea]) childhood to make an important methodological contribution in the interdisciplinary study of cultural transmission. The case study centers on the paradox that Asabano parents, in interviews, claim that their children …

Long-term, persistent infection with high-risk strains of human papillomavirus (HPV) is the precursor of most cervical cancers and an increasing number of the head and neck cancers. While HPV vaccines can protect patients under twenty-five years old from possible infections, no HPV antiviral drugs are available for the definitive treatment of preexisting or future viral infections. To treat current or future HPV infections, drugs that selectively block virus-specific processes, but do not damage the host cells, are needed. The compounds developed in our group are unique Imidazole-pyrrole polyamides, analogs of natural products Distamycin A and Netropsin that function by interfering …

Nutrition And Helicobacter Pylori: Host Diet And Nutritional Immunity Influence Bacterial Virulence And Disease Outcome, Kathryn P. Haley, Jennifer A. Gaddy

Peer Reviewed Articles

Helicobacter pylori colonizes the stomachs of greater than 50% of the world’s human population making it arguably one of the most successful bacterial pathogens. Chronic H. pylori colonization results in gastritis in nearly all patients; however in a subset of people, persistent infection with H. pylori is associated with an increased risk for more severe disease outcomes including B-cell lymphoma of mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma) and invasive adenocarcinoma. Research aimed at elucidating determinants that mediate disease progression has revealed genetic differences in both humans and H. pylori which increase the risk for developing gastric cancer. Furthermore, host diet and …

The Synbiotic Effect Of Volaticle Oil Extracted From Leaves Rosmarinus Officinolis And Nigellai Sativa On Microbial And Sensory Characteristics Of Minced Poultry Meat During Cold Storage, Bushra S. R . Zangana

Baghdad Science Journal

The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of using duplex volatile oil of *Rosmarinus officinalis* and *Nigella sativa* on microbial quality, sensory properties, and extending the storage time of minced cold poultry meat. Duplex volatile oil was added at 25, 50, and 75 mg/kg to minced poultry meat. These treatments were stored individually for 0, 4, and 7 days at 4-7°C. After conducting several microbial and sensory tests, the following results were obtained: The addition of duplex volatile oil from *Rosmarinus officinalis* and *Nigella sativa* led to a significant reduction (P<0.01) in total aerobic count, psychrophilic count, and coliform bacteria during refrigerated storage periods. The results also showed a significant improvement in sensory evaluation (P<0.01) for the organoleptic characteristics of minced poultry meat (flavor, juiciness, tenderness, overall palatability). It can be concluded that adding duplex volatile oil positively influenced the sensory and microbial safety of minced poultry meat when stored under refrigeration (4-7°C) for up to 7 days.

Extraction Conditions Of Polyphenol Oxidase From Banana Peel, Ghazi M. Aziz, Ali J. R. Al-Sa'ady

Baghdad Science Journal

Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) is an enzyme containing copper, presents in various fruits and vegetables. It is responsible for the browning reactions when the cells are damaged during handling. The best conditions for extraction of polyphenol oxidase from banana peel was by using an extraction buffer containing phosphate buffer (0.05 M, pH 7), 0.01 M ascorbic acid and 0.5% polyethylene glycol, with extraction ratio 1:4 (w:v) for one minute by using blender. The enzyme activity was measured spectrophotometrically at 425 nm. PPO was studied to prevent the browning of banana peel which results in the loss of their marketability. The aim …

The Removal Of Zinc From Aqueous Solutions Using Malvaparviflora, Ahlam Mohammed Farhan, Rasha Abed Jassim, Nafeesa J. Kadhim

Baghdad Science Journal

In this study, the adsorption of Zn (NO3)2 is carried out by using surfaces of malvaparviflora. The validity of the adsorption is evaluated by using atomic absorption Spectrophotometry through determination the amount of adsorbed Zn (NO3)2. Various parameters such as PH, adsorbent weight and contact time are studied in terms of their effect on the reaction progress. Furthermore, Lagergren’s equation is used to determine adsorption kinetics. It is observed that high removal of Zn (NO3)2 is obtained at PH=2. High removal of Zn (NO3)2 is at the time equivalent of 60 min and reaches equilibrium, where 0.25gm is the best weight …

Spectrophotometric Determination Of Chromium Using Indigo Carmine -Application In Various Samples, Najih H. Shekho, Hind A. Mahmoud

Baghdad Science Journal

A rapid, simple, and sensitive spectrophotometric method for determining trace amounts of chromium was studied. The method is based on the interaction of chromium with indigo carmine dye in acidic medium, with oxalates acting as a catalyst. The resulting bleaching of the dye is directly proportional to chromium(VI) concentration, measured at 610 nm. A plot of absorbance vs. chromium(VI) concentration obeys Beer’s law over the range of 0.5-70 μg/25 mL (0.02-2.8 ppm), with a molar absorptivity of 1.71 × 10^4 L·mol^-1·cm^-1 and Sandell’s sensitivity index of 0.0030 μg·cm^-2. The detection limit is 0.0012 μg/mL, and the relative standard deviation ranges …

The Role Of Na/K-Atpase Signaling In Oxidative Stress Related To Obesity And Cardiovascular Disease, Krithika Srikanthan, Joseph I. Shapiro Md, Komal Sodhi

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Na/K-ATPase has been extensively studied for its ion pumping function, but, in the past several decades, has been identified as a scaffolding and signaling protein. Initially it was found that cardiotonic steroids (CTS) mediate signal transduction through the Na/K-ATPase and result in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are also capable of initiating the signal cascade. However, in recent years, this Na/K-ATPase/ROS amplification loop has demonstrated significance in oxidative stress related disease states, including obesity, atherosclerosis, heart failure, uremic cardiomyopathy, and hypertension. The discovery of this novel oxidative stress signaling pathway, holds significant therapeutic

Green Religion: Manipulation Transcending Ideology, Miranda Wittmond

Pop Culture Intersections

As more Americans become aware of the environmental consequences of their actions and decisions, corporations have moved to profit off of rising environmental consciousness. However, instead of changing their practices to actually become environmentally conscious, many corporations often instead present a false front to make our society perceive them as green when they are not, an action commonly referred to as greenwashing. This allows them to gain advantage over their competitors, some of which might actually be sustainable, by taking advantage of consumers’ environmental consciousness. Despite legal action taken to stop this and federal laws putting restrictions on green advertising, …

Quantifying The Toxicity Of 1-Methylnaphthalene To The Shallow-Water Coral, Porites Divaricata, For Use In The Target Lipid Model, Nicholas Turner

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The proximity of coral reefs to coastal urban areas and shipping lanes predisposes corals to petroleum pollution from multiple sources. Previous research has evaluated petroleum toxicity to coral using a variety of methodologies, including monitoring effects of acute and chronic spills, in situ exposures, and ex situ exposures with both adult and larval stage corals. Variability in toxicant, bioassay conditions, species and other methodological disparities among studies prevents comprehensive conclusions regarding the toxicity of hydrocarbons to corals. This research evaluated the 48-hour toxicity of 1-methylnaphthalene to Porites divaricata using a continuous-flow passive dosing system. The range-finding exposure evaluated the dosing …

Dogs & Society: Anglo-American Sociological Perspectives (1865-1934), Michael R. Hill, Mary Jo Deegan

Zea E-Books Collection

HUMANS AND DOGS have a long, wonderful and sometimes problematic association. At a personal level, dogs have been integral to our lives, and our parents’ lives, for as long as the two of us can remember. As sociologists, we also recognize that dogs are important at the macro level. Here, we introduce a selection of early sociological arguments about dogs and their social relationships with humankind. Our interest in developing this book began when we encountered the delightful essays on dogs by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Annie Marion MacLean — two insightful Anglo-American sociologists who present opposing sympathies regarding the …
