Refining Statutory Interpretation: How Natural Gas Export Regulations Violate U.S. International Trade Obligations, Amanda L. Tharpe Sep 2016

Refining Statutory Interpretation: How Natural Gas Export Regulations Violate U.S. International Trade Obligations, Amanda L. Tharpe

Catholic University Law Review

As a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the United States is required to abide by nondiscriminatory trade policies when exporting products to other WTO members. Current U.S. policy regulating natural gas exports impose burdensome and lengthy licensing procedures on those requesting approval of a permit to export natural gas to countries with which the U.S. does not have a free trade agreement. A similar commodity, crude oil, is regulated by different regulations that allow for U.S. oil producers to freely export crude oil overseas. This Comment analyzes the differences in federal laws and regulations governing the export of …

Computational Design Of Ceramic Bone Scaffolds Fabricated Via Direct Ink Writing, Jeffrey Roberge Sep 2016

Computational Design Of Ceramic Bone Scaffolds Fabricated Via Direct Ink Writing, Jeffrey Roberge

Master's Theses

Bone scaffold porosity and stiffness play a critical role in the success of critical-size bone defect rehabilitation. In this work, we present a computational procedure to design ceramic bone scaffolds to provide adequate mechanical support and foster bone healing. The scaffolds considered in our study consist of a lattice of curved rods fabricated via direct ink writing. We develop cellular solids models of the scaffold's effective elastic constants as functions of its geometric parameters, up to some unknown coefficients. To determine numeric values for these coefficients, we execute a computational design of experiments whereby effective elastic properties are obtained using …

Development Of An Improved Live Attenuated Antigenic Marker Csf Vaccine Strain Candidate With An Increased Genetic Stability, Lauren Gayle Holinka-Patterson

Doctoral Dissertations

Classical Swine Fever Virus (CSFV) is an extremely contagious, hemorrhagic and often fatal disease of pigs that causes serious socioeconomic impact on countries which experience outbreaks or are endemically infected. Current control measures utilized for CSFV are contingent upon the epidemiological status of the inflicted area and entail either prophylactic vaccination or non-vaccination, “stamping out”, protocol with the elimination of infected herds and culling of animals on neighboring farms. This latter practice results in less than satisfactory consequences, although once thought to be the answer to eradication of CSFV from a region, “stamping out” results in tremendous economic losses as …

Large-N comparative studies have helped common pool resource scholars gain general insights into the factors that influence collective action and governance outcomes. However, these studies are often limited by missing data, and suffer from the methodological limitation that important information is lost when we reduce textual information to quantitative data. This study was motivated by nine case studies that appeared to be inconsistent with the expectation that the presence of Ostrom’s Design Principles increases the likelihood of successful common pool resource governance. These cases highlight the limitations of coding and analysing Large-N case studies. We examine two issues: 1) the …

Lubricants For Turbine Engines, David W. Johnson

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The lubricant systems used in turbine engine applications are discussed with respect to the particular problems associated with aircraft applications. After initially describing the relevant specifications, the typical basestocks are described along with some common degradation schemes. The additive systems, including antioxidants, anti-foaming agents, and anti-wear additives needed to achieve the typical specifications, are described along with their mechanism of action and degradation mechanisms. The methods used for the monitoring of lubricant health, including in-line and offline methods, are also discussed. Finally, future changes in specifications, basestocks, and additives are discussed with respect to new, high-performance bearing materials.
