Winter Activity Of Myotis Septentrionalis: Role Of Temperature In Controlling Emergence From A Hibernaculum, Cliff A. Lemen, Patricia Freeman, Jeremy A. White Sep 2016

Winter Activity Of Myotis Septentrionalis: Role Of Temperature In Controlling Emergence From A Hibernaculum, Cliff A. Lemen, Patricia Freeman, Jeremy A. White

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

We acoustically monitored a small mine in southeastern Nebraska known to be a hibernaculum for the Northern Long-eared Myotis (Myotis septentrionalis) for two winters (2014-2015 and 2015-2016). Some M. septentrionalis emerged on nights with mild temperatures throughout both winters. There was an 89% probability of detecting this species when temperature at sunset was >5°C. Our results indicated that acoustical surveys outside mines or caves in winter, particularly on nights with mild temperatures, are an effective method of identifying hibernacula of M. septentrionalis and potentially other species without disturbing individuals by entering the hibernaculum or by netting individuals as …

Microrna-433 Inhibits Glucocorticoid And Tgf-Β Signaling: Impacts On Osteoblast Circadian Rhythm, Commitment, And Differentiation, Spenser Scott Smith Sep 2016

Microrna-433 Inhibits Glucocorticoid And Tgf-Β Signaling: Impacts On Osteoblast Circadian Rhythm, Commitment, And Differentiation, Spenser Scott Smith

Doctoral Dissertations

Lineage commitment and differentiation of skeletal cells requires coordinated regulation of multiple signaling systems by microRNAs (miRNAs). Transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) is important for osteoblastogenesis, chondrogenesis and adipogenesis. Here, we show that miR-433 limits TGFβ signaling and is a negative regulator of osteoblastogenesis and chondrogenesis. miR-433 has also been found to target the glucocorticoid receptor, and rhythmic secretion of glucocorticoids is critical for synchronizing circadian clocks. We hypothesized that miR-433 regulates the circadian clocks by regulating glucocorticoid signaling.

In vivo, miR-433 displays robust rhythmicity in mouse calvaria. Its expression pattern was anti-phasic in relation to Bmal1, peaking after …

Street Vending And Competitive Advantage: Towards Building A Theoretical Framework, Aborampah Amoah-Mensah Sep 2016

Street Vending And Competitive Advantage: Towards Building A Theoretical Framework, Aborampah Amoah-Mensah

The Qualitative Report

The study examines the strategies adopted by street vendors or hawkers in Ghana in a bid to gain competitive advantage. Drawing on six focus group meetings held with street vendors in two sub-metropolitan assemblies (Bantama and Tafo) in Kumasi, Ghana, the study finds that street vendors adopt ten strategies – networking, multiple undifferentiated market strategy, the sale of convenient products, “dying and resurrecting” (strategic exit and return into business), regular changing of goods and services, exploitation of flexible operating hours, cost-based pricing strategy, sales promotion, trade credit and locational advantage – to gain competitive advantage. Using these strategies, a theoretical …

Hints Of Wholeness, Dylan Yvonne Welch Sep 2016

Hints Of Wholeness, Dylan Yvonne Welch

Theses and Dissertations

The fertile tension between what we know and don’t know about ourselves is the mystery that invigorates existence. In this essay, I posit that beauty is found in a knot of knowability and unknowability bound together in wholeness. This work contemplates our unique receptivity to that underlying but invisible wholeness which makes its presence known as beauty in nature immediately around us and on a cosmic scale.

Most sense organs of arthropods are ensconced in small exoskeletal compartments that hinder direct access to plasma membranes. We have developed a method for exposing live sensory and supporting cells in such structures. The technique uses a viscous light cured resin to embed and support the structure, which is then sliced with a sharp blade. We term the procedure a “goggatomy,” from the Khoisan word for a bug, gogga. To demonstrate the utility of the method we show that it can be used to expose the auditory chordotonal organs in the second antennal segment and the olfactory receptor neurons …

Using Dual-Language Books To Preserve Language & Culture In Alaska Native Communities, Kathryn Ohle, Jonathan Bartles Sep 2016

Using Dual-Language Books To Preserve Language & Culture In Alaska Native Communities, Kathryn Ohle, Jonathan Bartles

Wellness & Healing: Indigenous Innovations & Alaska Native Research

“Children learn their language on their mother’s lap.” This conventional wisdom from a Cup’ik Elder describes the approach used by many Alaska Native peoples to promote native language acquisition. Presumably, the children learn by listening to stories and tales from a trusted parent or caregiver. However, what happens when the caregiver does not speak the native language? This chapter describes an effort to address this issue while also promoting better educational outcomes by providing access to diverse dual-language books in Alaska Native languages through the use of a digital children’s library. Potential benefits from these efforts include an increase in …

Investigations of Enterobius sp. infection in prehistory have produced a body of data that can be used to evaluate the geographic distribution of infection through time in the Americas. Regional variations in prevalence are evident. In North America, 119 pinworm positive samples were found in 1,112 samples from 28 sites with a prevalence of 10.7%. Almost all of the positive samples came from agricultural sites. From Brazil, 0 pinworm positive samples were found in 325 samples from 7 sites. For the Andes region, 22 pinworm positive samples were found in 411 samples from 26 sites for a prevalence of 5.3%. …

“Cellular Basis Of Consciousness”: Not Just Radical But Wrong, Brian Key Sep 2016

“Cellular Basis Of Consciousness”: Not Just Radical But Wrong, Brian Key

Animal Sentience

Reber (2016) attempts to resuscitate an obscure and outdated hypothesis referred to as the “cellular basis of consciousness” that was originally formulated by the author nearly twenty years ago. This hypothesis proposes that any organism with flexible cell walls, a sensitivity to its surrounds, and the capacity for locomotion will possess the biological foundations of mind and consciousness. Reber seeks to reduce consciousness to a fundamental property inherent to individual cells rather than to centralised nervous systems. This commentary shows how this hypothesis is based on supposition, false premises and a misunderstanding of evolutionary theory. The cellular basis of consciousness …

The Person And The Self As Social Accomplishment, Leslie Irvine Sep 2016

The Person And The Self As Social Accomplishment, Leslie Irvine

Animal Sentience

Rowlands (2016) presents a compelling argument for extending personhood to nonhuman animals. Sociological conceptions of the person also do not require that animals meet the elusive standard of self-awareness. Sociological ideas on selfhood support the claims about pre-reflective awareness and extend the requisite experiences to animals.

The Evolutionary History Of Consciousness, Eirik Søvik, Clint Perry Sep 2016

The Evolutionary History Of Consciousness, Eirik Søvik, Clint Perry

Animal Sentience

Klein & Barron argue that insects are capable of subjective experience, i.e., sentience. Whereas we mostly agree with the conclusion of their arguments, we think there is an even more important message to be learned from their work. The line of reasoning opened by Klein & Barron proves instructive for how neuroscientists can and should explore the biological phenomenon of consciousness.

1. Prescribed burning is used in tropical savannas to improve habitat conditions for domestic and wild herbivores, but its effects on the ecological interactions between these herbivore guilds have never been assessed experimentally. Understanding such effects will contribute towards more informed management of both guilds in landscapes where they share habitats.

Beginnings: Physics, Sentience And Luca, Carolyn A. Ristau Sep 2016

Beginnings: Physics, Sentience And Luca, Carolyn A. Ristau

Animal Sentience

According to Reber’s model, Cellular Basis of Consciousness (CBC), sentience had its origins in a unicellular organism and is an inherent property of living, mobile organic forms. He argues by analogy to basic physical forces which he considers to be inherent properties of matter; I suggest that they are instead the stuff of scientific investigation in physics. I find no convincing argument that sentience had to begin in endogenously mobile cells, a criterial attribute of the originator cell(s)for sentience according to CBC. Non-endogenously mobile cells, (i.e., plants or precursors) in a moving environment would suffice. Despite my concerns and the …

Stardines Swim High Across The Sky And Other Poems

Children's Book and Media Review

Stardines Swim High Across the Sky is a charming anthology of short poems describing various imaginary creatures that are punny combinations of real animals with inanimate objects and quirky personality traits. Presented as discoveries from the author’s travels into “far-flung places,” this book introduces us to such delights as the jollyfish, “radiant, ebullient blobs of mirth,” the fountain lion, “the only lions no one dreads,” and the titular stardines, that “illuminate the darkest nights,” along with thirteen other creatures in short verse form.

The Colonial Remix: Power And Language In Colonial And Digital Spaces, Susana Aho

The Quiet Corner Interdisciplinary Journal

This paper maps the similarities between colonial and digital media histories, as well as the repercussions these similarities might have on constructions of power and language in a digital age. The colonial encounter in sixteenth century led to the eventual displacement of indigenous pictographic forms by Western alphabetic ones. However, the first years of encounter are also marked by experimentation in which these two forms were combined in unique ways, creating hybrid reading and writing methods. Similarly, digital platforms are able to combine previously separate media (photography, film, 3D animation, print design, maps, etc) in the same files and environments, …

Poetic Illiteracy And Cultural Insularity: The Crisis Of Cultural Nationalism In Virgilio Piñera's La Isla En Peso, Stephen A. Cruikshank Sep 2016

Poetic Illiteracy And Cultural Insularity: The Crisis Of Cultural Nationalism In Virgilio Piñera's La Isla En Peso, Stephen A. Cruikshank

The Quiet Corner Interdisciplinary Journal

The twentieth-century Cuban poet Virgilio Piñera was both a radical and rebellious writer who wrote against the national discourses of his time. In his acclaimed poem La isla en peso Piñera challenges the Neobaroque discourse of Cuban identity by describing Cuba as 'insular' rather than innovative. The following article argues that La isla en peso, like a prophetic letter, seems to have foreseen seventy years earlier what the modern literary critic Abraham Acosta has recently described as a "threshold of illiteracy," that is, a disruption or illiterate interference of one's critical reading by exposing the contradictions of cultural nationalism. …

Maximizing Short-Term Study Abroad Programs Offered By State Comprehensive Universities, David Kaplin

Teacher-Scholar: The Journal of the State Comprehensive University

Study abroad experiences off er a wide range of growth opportunities to participating students. From heightened independence and personal confidence to an enhanced understanding of the host culture to a greater awareness of cross-cultural and global citizenship, the benefits of well-run study abroad programs have been assessed through survey questions, interviews, faculty observations, and student testimonials (Forsey, Broomhall & Davis, 2012; Dwyer & Peters, 2004; Gorka & Niesenbaum, 2001). In addition, students returning from study abroad programs tend to rethink the goals of their undergraduate education, often taking more interdisciplinary courses and courses involving cross-cultural components, and many travel or …

Might Insects Experience Pain?, Robert W. Elwood Sep 2016

Might Insects Experience Pain?, Robert W. Elwood

Animal Sentience

The aim of this commentary is to expand the discussion about subjective experience to other arthropods, notably crustaceans. Various species of crustaceans show responses consistent with their feeling pain. Hermit crabs also show prolonged investigation of new shells. They clearly attend to and integrate information from a wide variety of sources that enable them to evaluate the quality of the new shell relative to their current shell. These observations too are consistent with their having subjective experience.

Protein Carbonylation Of An Amino Acid Residue Of The Na/K‐Atpase Α1 Subunit Determines Na/K‐Atpase Signaling And Sodium Transport In Renal Proximal Tubular Cells, Yanling Yan, Anna P. Shapiro, Brahma R. Mopidevi, Muhammad Chaudhry, Kyle Maxwell, Steven T. Haller, Christopher A. Drummond, David J. Keendey, Jiang Tian, Deepak Malhorta, Zijian Xie, Joseph I. Shapiro Md, Jiang Liu

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Background We have demonstrated that cardiotonic steroids, such as ouabain, signaling through the Na/K‐ATPase, regulate sodium reabsorption in the renal proximal tubule. By direct carbonylation modification of the Pro222 residue in the actuator (A) domain of pig Na/K‐ATPase α1 subunit, reactive oxygen species are required for ouabain‐stimulated Na/K‐ATPase/c‐Src signaling and subsequent regulation of active transepithelial 22Na+ transport. In the present study we sought to determine the functional role of Pro222 carbonylation in Na/K‐ATPase signaling and sodium handling.

Methods and Results Stable pig α1 knockdown LLC‐PK1‐originated PY‐17 cells were rescued by expressing wild‐type rat α1 and rat α1 with …
