Children's Book and Media Review
This is a book about, well… the characters can’t quite seem to figure it out! The numbers think it should be about numbers, but the letters are intent on it being about letters. They bicker back and forth until an Alligator shows up. The leader of the letters points out that Alligator starts with A, while the number leader states that it’s clearly 1 Alligator. This goes back and forth, with the numbers getting bigger and bigger and the alphabet moving up, for example a 10-piece Jigsaw puzzle being put together by 11 Koalas and 12 Lions. Finally, after all …

Resettlement Struggles Of Burmese Refugee Students In U.S. High Schools: A Qualitative Study, Madhavi Tandon Dr.
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
This article presents findings from a qualitative study that examined how five Burmese refugee students adjusted and navigated two public school high schools in a Midwestern urban city in the U.S. The purpose of the study was to capture their unique histories and migration stories from which they drew strength as they resettled in the U.S. The present study focused specifically on the barriers faced by them in achieving high school graduation and impediments to higher education. Important findings included lack of navigational capital, linguicism and the intense shame of being a multilingual learner, birth order, and poor health. Other …

Student reviews of graphic novels, comics, manga, or anime were produced in LIS 670, an introduction to history and development of graphic novels, manga, comic books, and anime, and their role in libraries and information settings. Students modeled their reviews after VOYA’s Graphically Speaking by Kat Kan.

The school disciplinary landscape across the United States changed significantly through the enactment of policies that criminalize students’ behaviors during the 1990s and 2000s. Schools began to involve the police and criminal legal system in school disciplinary issues that used to be handled by school administrators. This shift led youth of Color1 to increasingly come into contact with the juvenile legal system through school suspensions, expulsions, and referrals to alternative schools—what we characterize as the school-toprison nexus.
Conceptualizing the school-to-prison pipeline as a nexus, or interlocking system of power over youth, allows us to understand how the criminalization of youth …

Are Researchers Registering Systematic Reviews In Clinicaltrials.Gov?, Gary E. Kaplan, Ms, Ahip
Academic Commons and Scott Memorial Library Staff Papers and Presentations
BACKGROUND:
ClinicalTrials.gov (CT) is an increasingly important resource for systematic reviewers attempting to identify published and unpublished clinical studies. In addition to clinical studies, however, some searches of the CT database also return systematic reviews (SRs). When I inquired about the SRs appearing in the results, the NLM Help Desk responded that “We do not recommend that systematic reviews be entered in ClinicalTrials.gov, since we only want the results of a clinical trial entered once. However, we will not refuse them if they are entered.” I wanted to find out how many SRs are included, describe their characteristics, and suggest …

Neoclassical Administrative Common Law, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski
Neoclassical Administrative Common Law, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski
Journal Articles
This essay reviews John Dickinson’s neglected classic, Administrative Justice and the Supremacy of Law in the United States. Writing on the cusp of the New Deal, Dickinson helped establish a mainstream, moderate stance about the shape and legitimacy of the administrative state. A closer reading of this work, which is rich in jurisprudential reflection and historical learning, offers a better idea about the structure, promise, and limits of the doctrinal world he helped create.

Neurons in vertebrate central nervous systems initiate and conduct sodium action potentials in distinct subcellular compartments that differ architecturally and electrically. Here, we report several unanticipated passive and active properties of the cerebellar granule cell’s unmyelinated axon. Whereas spike initiation at the axon initial segment relies on sodium channel (Nav)-associated fibroblast growth factor homologous factor (FHF) proteins to delay Nav inactivation, distal axonal Navs show little FHF association or FHF requirement for high-frequency transmission, velocity and waveforms of conducting action potentials. In addition, leak conductance density along the distal axon is estimated as o1% that of somatodendritic membrane. The faster …

Integrative taxonomy (IT) is becoming a preferred approach to delimiting species boundaries by including different empirical criteria. IT methods can be divided into two types of procedures both of which use multiple kinds of evidence: step-by-step approaches test hypotheses by sequential evaluation in a hypothetic-deductive framework, while model-based procedures delimit groups based on statistical information criteria. In this study we used a step-by-step approach and a Gaussian clustering (GC) method to test species boundaries in the northernmost species of the Liolaemus montanus group. We used different methods based on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence data, morphological measures and niche envelope …
A Phenomenological Study Of Effective Leadership In Academic Health Sciences Libraries In The United States, Ricky Lester Fought
A Phenomenological Study Of Effective Leadership In Academic Health Sciences Libraries In The United States, Ricky Lester Fought
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Academic health sciences libraries are experiencing a challenging period of transition and competition. They are still transitioning from a print to electronic environment while facing competition from the Internet and other information providers. Higher education is going through a period of shrinking state appropriations while facing greater accountability and calls for more affordability. These challenging times, however, are also bringing opportunities to libraries to contribute more to their campuses and partner with other departments on new programs and projects. To realize these opportunities and make it through the challenges ahead, academic health sciences libraries will need good leadership. The perceived …
Cerebellar Neuropathology Influences Cerebellar-Prefrontal Cortex Pathways: A Comprehensive Approach As Relevant To Autism Spectrum Disorders, Eric Mckimm
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The cognitive and social dexterity of humans is attributed to the neocortex, an area of the brain well accepted to elevate us beyond the mental processing of all other species. The cognitive ability of the cerebellum however, remains one of the most misunderstood. Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), with a prevalence of 1 in 68 children, lack clear empirical explanations for abnormal neuropathology and potential neuronal disconnections influenced by the cerebellum. The current evaluation takes a comprehensive look at how the cerebellum, pre-frontal cortex, and basal ganglia are interconnected and influenced by each other as relevant to ASDs. With a better …
Parents' And Teachers' Collaborative Perspective: An Input For A Model On Materials Development In A Multilingual Setting, Jane Kibla Lartec
Parents' And Teachers' Collaborative Perspective: An Input For A Model On Materials Development In A Multilingual Setting, Jane Kibla Lartec
Journal of Research Initiatives
This study explored the collaborative perspective of teachers and parents on the materials development in a multilingual setting. Respondents were six parents and six teachers from two pilot schools in a melting pot city of different languages and cultures. The research design employed was qualitative to gain insights, explore the depth, richness and complexity inherent in the social or cultural phenomenon. Data were gathered from interviews with the aid of audio recorder and interview guide based on Malone (2007). The responses were transcribed and then categorized into themes according to similarities pertaining to the development of materials. It was found …
Speaking And Mourning: Working Through Identity And Language In Chang-Rae Lee’S Native Speaker, Matthew L. Miller
Speaking And Mourning: Working Through Identity And Language In Chang-Rae Lee’S Native Speaker, Matthew L. Miller
Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies
In my essay entitled “Speaking and Mourning: Working Through Identity and Language in Chang-rae Lee’s Native Speaker,” I argue that the novel’s protagonist Henry Park finds himself at a critical juncture in his life at the novel’s beginning. I analyze the protagonist’s relationship to language acquisition and identity, which have been developed by Lee to be associated as traumas. Furthermore, these topics are complicated by the death of his son, Mitt. This loss is a trauma of the heart and of the self for the main character who sees a successful navigation of language and immigration lost by his …
