Peripersonal Space And Margin Of Safety Around The Body: Learning Visuo-Tactile Associations In A Humanoid Robot With Artificial Skin, A Roncone, M Hoffmann, U Pattacini, L Fadiga, G Metta

This paper investigates a biologically motivated model of peripersonal space through its implementation on a humanoid robot. Guided by the present understanding of the neurophysiology of the fronto-parietal system, we developed a computational model inspired by the receptive fields of polymodal neurons identified, for example, in brain areas F4 and VIP. The experiments on the iCub humanoid robot show that the peripersonal space representation i) can be learned efficiently and in real-time via a simple interaction with the robot, ii) can lead to the generation of behaviors like avoidance and reaching, and iii) can contribute to the understanding the biological …

The objective of the present study was to evaluate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in two quantitative trait locus (QTL) regions (BTA 6 and BTA 20) that are associated with bovine respiratory disease (BRD). A population of 323 crossbred steers sired by five purebred sire breeds during 2010-2013 (Angus, Braford, Braunvieh, Charolais, and Simmental) were evaluated for BRD susceptibility during the finishing process at a commercial feedlot. A total of 21 animals representing all sire breeds were affected with BRD at some time during the finishing process over the 4-year period. Although multiple sire breeds were evaluated in the present …

Insects: Still Looking Like Zombies, Christopher S. Hill
Animal Sentience
In arguing that insect brains are capable of sentience, Klein & Barron rely heavily on Bjorn Merker’s claim that activity in the human mid-brain is sufficient for conscious experience. I criticize Merker’s claim by pointing out that the behaviors supported by midbrain activity are much more primitive than the ones that appear to depend on consciousness. I raise a similar objection to Klein & Barron’s contention that insect behaviors are similar to behaviors that manifest consciousness in human beings. The similarity is weak. I also respond to the related view that integrative activity in mid-brain structures is sufficient to explain …

The Anchor: 2016
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Treatment As An Individual And The Priority Of Persons Over Groups In Antidiscrimination Law, Patrick S. Shin
Treatment As An Individual And The Priority Of Persons Over Groups In Antidiscrimination Law, Patrick S. Shin
Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works
The Supreme Court has said that the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution and Title VII’s prohibition of discrimination require that all persons be treated as individuals and that the laws operate primarily to protect “persons, not groups.” This article shows that the legal requirement of individual treatment has two distinct components: a rule invalidating inferences about persons based on their membership in protected groups and a rule prohibiting disparate treatment for the sake of group interests or intergroup equality. The first rule is rooted in moral principles of respect for individual autonomy. The second rule is a principle that …

The Origin Of Efficient Triplet State Population In Sulfur-Substituted Nucleobases, Marvin Pollum, Nicholas Dunn, Carlos E. Crespo-Hernández
The Origin Of Efficient Triplet State Population In Sulfur-Substituted Nucleobases, Marvin Pollum, Nicholas Dunn, Carlos E. Crespo-Hernández
Faculty Scholarship
Elucidating the photophysical mechanisms in sulfur-substituted nucleobases (thiobases) is essential for designing prospective drugs for photo-and chemotherapeutic applications. Although it has long been established that the phototherapeutic activity of thiobases is intimately linked to efficient intersystem crossing into reactive triplet states, the molecular factors underlying this efficiency are poorly understood. Herein we combine femtosecond transient absorption experiments with quantum chemistry and nonadiabatic dynamics simulations to investigate 2-thiocytosine as a necessary step to unravel the electronic and structural elements that lead to ultrafast and near-unity triplet-state population in thiobases in general. We show that different parts of the potential energy surfaces …

Adding Insult To Injury: Food Additives And U.S./ Eu International Trade, Anna C. Lopez
Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law
Food additives have played an essential role in human development for centuries. From pickling with vinegar to preserving with salt, additives serve both as a safeguard for human health and a facilitator of population growth. Since the latter half of the twentieth century, the number of food additives that have been introduced has exploded to nearly 4,000. With the increasing adoption of processed foods, safety regulation has taken a more prominent--but questionably effective--role in the regulatory scheme. For example, boric acid was widely used as a food preservative from the 1870s through the 1920s, but was banned after World War …

Developing And Using Evidence-Based E-Learning Videos For Cybersecurity Education, Wu He, Xin Tian, Mohd Anwar
KSU Proceedings on Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
To help people improve their knowledge and security self-efficacy in dealing with malware attacks that are relevant and meaningful to their organizations, we recently developed over 30 e-learning videos based on the major types of malware attacks we captured using the state-of-the-art anti-malware solution. The preliminary evaluation results of the videos are quite positive and indicate that these evidence-based e-learning videos have great potential to increase users’ security self-efficacy.

Training Wheels: A New Approach To Teaching Mobile Device Security, Philip Menard, Jordan Shropshire
KSU Proceedings on Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
Despite massive investments in cyber security education, training, and awareness programs, most people retain unsafe mobile computing habits. They not only jeopardize their own data, but also risk the security of their associated organizations. It appears that conventional training programs are not ingraining sound security practices on trainees. This research questions the efficacy of legacy SETA frameworks and proposes a new cyber training tool for mobile devices. The tool is called Training Wheels. Training Wheels stands a number of cyber security training practices on their heads: instead of using punitive methods of reinforcement it provides rewards to encourage good behavior, …
