Comparing Game Simulation To Concept Models For Student-Centered Learning In Biology, Margaurete Romero Nov 2016

Comparing Game Simulation To Concept Models For Student-Centered Learning In Biology, Margaurete Romero

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Science education research continues to demonstrate improved learning with active-learning techniques compared to lectures. However, the question of which active-learning methods are the most effective for learning complex scientific principles in various context still remains. Models are commonly used in activities that allow students to simplify complex systems and understand how components interact. I investigated the outcomes for student learning and engagement of two model-based activities - concept models and game simulations. The activities were conducted in an introductory biology course in sixteen discussion sections. Eight sections were assigned to the concept model activity and eight to the simulation activity. …

Corrosion Characteristics Of Magnesium Under Varying Surface Roughness Conditions, Yahya Efe Yayoglu Nov 2016

Corrosion Characteristics Of Magnesium Under Varying Surface Roughness Conditions, Yahya Efe Yayoglu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The biggest challenge with magnesium alloy biodegradable implants is the rapid corrosion at the earlier stages of the healing process after implantation. In this research, the impact of surface roughness generated by different means on the corrosion rate of AZ31 magnesium alloy in a simulated biologic environment is investigated. In order to perform accurate experimentation, an in vitro setup is assembled that simulates the human body environment accurately has been prepared using Schinhammer’s in vitro immersion testing setup and Kokubo’s Simulated Body Fluid (SBF). For the immersion test of Mg in SBF, several surface texture groups of Mg have been …

Investigating Early Village Community Formation And Development At Kolomoki (9er1), Shaun Eric West Nov 2016

Investigating Early Village Community Formation And Development At Kolomoki (9er1), Shaun Eric West

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In southeastern North America, the Woodland period (ca. 1000 B.C. to A.D. 1050) was arguably witness to the first early village societies, and Kolomoki—located in southwestern Georgia—is among the largest villages during this interval. Though archaeologists recognize these communities as seminal developments in the course of human history, little attention has been paid to how they develop and vary internally. This thesis seeks to address these issues by focusing on the development and social construction of the early village community at Kolomoki. The results of an excavation program carried out within Kolomoki’s South Village affords a clearer picture of this …

Pepper Mild Mottle Virus As A Surrogate For Enteric Viruses: Implications For Assessing Water Quality, Erin Michelle Symonds Nov 2016

Pepper Mild Mottle Virus As A Surrogate For Enteric Viruses: Implications For Assessing Water Quality, Erin Michelle Symonds

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Less than 10% of the world’s domestic wastewater is disinfected prior to discharge into surface waters; therefore, human exposure to diverse wastewater-related pathogens results in millions of cases of illness each year. Among the enteric pathogens, viruses represent an important group of emerging pathogens and are frequently the cause of food- and water-borne outbreaks of illness. Although the World Health Organization and many government agencies mandate the use of bacterial indicators to identify poor microbial water quality, it is well known that these indicators poorly correlate with fecal pollution contamination events and risk of disease. The field of public health-related …

Blessed With The Faculty Of Mirthfulness: The New Journalism And Irish Local Newspapers In 1900, Mark Wehrly Nov 2016

Blessed With The Faculty Of Mirthfulness: The New Journalism And Irish Local Newspapers In 1900, Mark Wehrly

Irish Communication Review

Throughout the nineteenth century, several developments contrived – mostly indirectly – to make newspaper publishing in Britain an attractive business prospect. These included rising literacy levels, the abolition of taxes on newspapers in 1855 and innovations in the way newspapers were produced and distributed. From the mid-nineteenth century onwards this had the effect, in both Britain and Ireland, of increasing in multiples the number of different newspapers that were published (Cullen, 1989: 4–5). Likewise, in Dublin as in London, lively debates took place on the desirability of these developments, and the question of the social function of journalism was widely …

Tabloid Sensationalism Or Revolutionary Feminism? The First-Wave Feminist Movement In An Irish Women’S Periodical, Sonja Tiernan

Irish Communication Review

By 1928 women had achieved many of the objectives of the first-wave of the feminist movement. They had secured political franchise in general elections, girls benefitted from improved access to education and working women were gradually experiencing better conditions in the workplace. However, Europe remained under the rule of a patriarchy and newspapers were controlled by men within that system.

Smartsignplay: Lily Learns American Sign Language, Jeremiah Doody Nov 2016

Smartsignplay: Lily Learns American Sign Language, Jeremiah Doody

DHI Digital Projects Showcase

Many children are born either wholly or partially deaf, leaving parents to wonder how they can communicate with, and teach their child. For a hearing parent, unfamiliar with American Sign Language (ASL), traditional methods can be exasperating. Additional methods are helpful to reinforce this learning process. The teaching method needs to be effective, yet easy enough for a 2 year old to pick up. Likewise, the premise needs to actually hold the child’s attention. SmartSignPlay was proposed as an interactive smartphone, or tablet, game designed to make teaching ASL easier and fun. The game was to be point and click, …

Media And Protests: The Utilisation Of Communication Technologies By Environmental Movements, Liam Leonard

Irish Communication Review

A notable feature of the recent political landscape has been the increasing incidents of confrontation between grassroots and elites. These conflicts have occurred in the wake of the declining relevance of the traditional left-right dichotomy, and have been exemplified by the campaigns of opposition led by environmental groups against the globalised corporate sector. This article will examine how new forms of political expression may arise from the environmental movements’ utilisation of the new technologies of communication as a strategic tool in their campaigns of protest.

Live Life To The Power Of Ps2: Locating The Digital Games Industry In The New Media Environment, Aphra Kerr

Irish Communication Review

The digital games industry is a global entertainment business stretching from Tokyo to San Francisco to London. In May each year, game developers from around the world meet in Los Angeles to pitch their ideas to publishers, sneak a preview of other games and do licensing deals with hardware companies and Hollywood studios. The show has much in common with Melia and Cannes: it has all the glitz, the hype and the stars. The main difference is that the stars are non-human, the digital game producers are relatively unknown and this form of popular culture has been largely ignored by …

Scots Gaelic And Welsh Language Broadcasting In The Cultural Contexts: A Comparative Analysis, Fachna O'Drisceoil Nov 2016

Scots Gaelic And Welsh Language Broadcasting In The Cultural Contexts: A Comparative Analysis, Fachna O'Drisceoil

Irish Communication Review

This paper will be a presentation and comparative analysis of the experiences of Welsh and Scots Gaelic broadcasting. The intention is to draw conclusions regarding broadcasting strategies in those languages and to identify the implications of those conclusions for Irish language broadcasting strategy. It was decided that a brief discussion of a wider range of lesser used languages would be superficial in nature, and of little real benefit to understanding the Irish situation. Instead, a more detailed presentation will be given of the Welsh and Scots Gaelic cases on the basis that their cultural and historical experience has most similarity …

Overlap In The Seasonal Infection Patterns Of Avian Malaria Parasites And West Nile Virus In Vectors And Hosts, Matthew Medeiros, Robert Ricklefs, Jeffrey Brawn, Marilyn Ruiz, Tony Goldberg, Gabriel Hamer Nov 2016

Overlap In The Seasonal Infection Patterns Of Avian Malaria Parasites And West Nile Virus In Vectors And Hosts, Matthew Medeiros, Robert Ricklefs, Jeffrey Brawn, Marilyn Ruiz, Tony Goldberg, Gabriel Hamer

Biology Department Faculty Works

Multiple vector-borne pathogens often circulate in the same vector and host communities, and seasonal infection dynamics influence the potential for pathogen interactions. Here, we explore the seasonal infection patterns of avian malaria (Haemosporida) parasites (Plasmodium and Haemoproteus) and West Nile virus (WNV) in birds and mosquitoes in suburban Chicago. We show that both pathogens vary seasonally in Culex mosquitoes and avian hosts, but that patterns of covariation are complex. Different putative Plasmodium species varied asynchronously across the season in mosquitoes and birds, suggesting that different forces may govern their transmission. Infections of Culex mosquitoes with Plasmodium parasites were positively associated …

Animal, Dairy, And Veterinary Sciences Center For Integrated Biosystems | Biological Engineering, Usu College Of Engineering

College of Engineering News

The goal of my research group is to develop and investigate methods and tools to understand and detect diseases. We currently have 3 research thrusts: modeling subretinal tissue, simulating microgravity and radiative effects on skeletal muscle, and separating and identifying bacteria. We use micropatterning and 2D cultures with spider silk to model normal and diseased layers of the subretina. For our muscle research, we are currently using a rotating cell culture system and Cesium disks to replicate the conditions during spaceflight. To identify mycobacterial strands, we are combining dielectrophoresis with Raman spectroscopy for fast and accurate detection. In each of …
