In Search Of Heterotopia: Immersive Experiences In The Museum, Nicolas Crosby Jan 2016

In Search Of Heterotopia: Immersive Experiences In The Museum, Nicolas Crosby

All Master's Theses

Museums everywhere are waging battle to find ways to attract new audience members. In this thesis I draw upon participant observation, interviews, and event planning in order to examine how museums create heterotopic, interactive immersive experiences. I focus on the work of two Seattle-area museums, and a gallery and a museum in Ellensburg. The Entertainment, Music, and Popular Culture museum (EMP), the Nordic Heritage Museum (NHM), and the Museum of Culture and Environment (MCE) developed opportunities for visitors to engage with museum-created heterotopic events. I approach this analysis through a theoretical framework that emphasizes structure and agency. On one hand, …

Home Range Creation And Analysis Using Geospatial Modeling Environment And Arcgis Software, Alexandra Locher, Matt Lindenberg Jan 2016

Home Range Creation And Analysis Using Geospatial Modeling Environment And Arcgis Software, Alexandra Locher, Matt Lindenberg

Open Textbooks

Many analyses in natural resources or ecology-related fields, specifically wildlife-focused disciplines, investigate wildlife habitat use and movement patterns for population and habitat management. Kernel density estimates and home range analysis are commonly used by wildlife biologists for such investigations. Methods to conduct home range analyses are often complex and require use of multiple software programs. In the literature and on the web, it is difficult to find comprehensive instructions on how to create home ranges and proceed with analyses. The purpose of this manual is to describe the process of synthesizing raw location point location data, creating home ranges (kernel …

Choreographing Intimacy: The Making Of ‘[They] Slipped Briskly Into An Intimacy From Which They Never Recovered’ – A Dance Film, Antonio Rinaldi Jan 2016

Choreographing Intimacy: The Making Of ‘[They] Slipped Briskly Into An Intimacy From Which They Never Recovered’ – A Dance Film, Antonio Rinaldi

Theses : Honours

In this investigation, I have utilised a practice-led research methodology to capture ‘intimacy’ in film, specifically, the medium of dance film. The exegetical work is divided into the written research with an accompanied dance film component; however they should be viewed as an integrated thesis. The aim of my research was to develop my choreographic practice through a film that is a sensory and evocative exploration of intimacy. I argue that the film components of dance film (directing, cinematography, editing and the like) uniquely capture an intangability of dance and the complexities of human intimacy in a manner that is …

An Analysis Of Chosen Alarm Code Pin Numbers & Their Weakness Against A Modified Brute Force Attack, Alastair Nisbet, Maria Kim Jan 2016

An Analysis Of Chosen Alarm Code Pin Numbers & Their Weakness Against A Modified Brute Force Attack, Alastair Nisbet, Maria Kim

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Home and commercial alarms are an integral physical security measure that have become so commonplace that little thought is given to the security that they may or may not provide. Whilst the focus has shifted from physical security in the past to cyber security in the present, physical security for protecting assets may be just as important for many business organisations. This research looks at 700 genuine alarm PIN codes chosen by users to arm and disarm alarm systems in a commercial environment. A comparison is made with a study of millions of PIN numbers unrelated to alarms to compare …

To Accommodate Or Not To Accommodate: (When) Should The State Regulate Religion To Protect The Rights Of Children And Third Parties?, Hillel Y. Levin, Allan J. Jacobs, Kavita Arora

Scholarly Works

When should we accommodate religious practices? When should we demand that religious groups instead conform to social and legal norms? Who should make these decisions, and how? These questions lie at the very heart of our contemporary debates in the field of Law and Religion.

Particularly thorny issues arise where religious practices may impose health-related harm to children within a religious group or to third parties. Unfortunately, legislators, scholars, courts, ethicists, and medical practitioners have not offered a consistent way to analyze such cases and the law is inconsistent. This Article suggests that the lack of consistency is a troubling …

Conflict-Affected Youth Livelihoods Programming: Bridging The Gap Between Research & Practice, Chanel M. Marin

Public Health Theses

The current thesis project consists of a programmatic mapping of existing policy and programming related to conflict-affected youth livelihoods and a Rapid Evidence Assessment (REA) of the literature to identify the evidence base for effective interventions. The programmatic mapping identified key actors in the field and existing policy and programming, revealing a need for: data regarding evidence-based interventions; demand-driven intervention strategies; cross-sectoral partnerships providing holistic programming approaches; increased outreach to vulnerable sub-populations; and increased youth participation in program design, implementation, management, and evaluation. The REA revealed a severe shortage of evidence-based practice in this area, but sheds light on the …

Animal & Human Leptospirosis In A High Transmission Setting In Fiji, Eri Togami Jan 2016

Animal & Human Leptospirosis In A High Transmission Setting In Fiji, Eri Togami

Public Health Theses

Leptospirosis is a neglected zoonotic disease with a worldwide distribution, yet disproportionally affects poor rural subsistence farmers in the tropics. The animal reservoirs for spill-over infection to humans in such settings in the South Pacific have not been well delineated, thus hampering effective control efforts. We conducted a case control investigation among households that participated in a seroprevalence survey for leptospirosis in Western Fiji. We surveyed domestic animals and trapped rodents at 45 cases and 73 control households who had one or more, and no inhabitants with evidence for anti-leptospire agglutinating antibodies. We performed serology among all animals and used …

Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor Polymorphisms And Tuberculosis Disease Susceptibility In Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, Max Mu Wang Jan 2016

Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor Polymorphisms And Tuberculosis Disease Susceptibility In Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, Max Mu Wang

Public Health Theses

Background: TB is a leading cause of mortality, infecting over one-third of the world’s population. Difficulties combating the disease are compounded by the fact that a majority of TB infections remain in an asymptomatic latent state. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is an innate cytokine that is encoded in a functionally polymorphic genetic locus with characterized allelic variants that correlate to TB progression. Understanding the genetic factors that regulate host immune responses to TB will help to identify individuals who are at higher risk of severe infection.

Methods: A case-control study of HIV+ active pulmonary TB cases and HIV+ controls …

Whole-Genome Sequencing And Phylogenetic Analysis Of Novel Paramyxoviruses Discovered In Bats From Brazil, Heather Louise Wells Jan 2016

Whole-Genome Sequencing And Phylogenetic Analysis Of Novel Paramyxoviruses Discovered In Bats From Brazil, Heather Louise Wells

Public Health Theses

Wildlife disease surveillance has been increasing in recent years in an effort to identify and characterize novel emerging zoonoses. In particular, bats have been targets of active surveillance because of their recent associations with diseases of global public health importance, such as Ebola virus, SARS-like coronaviruses, and Nipah and Hendra virus. The high species richness, large population sizes, and frequent inter- and intra-species interactions of bats make them ideal reservoirs of infectious diseases. For this molecular epidemiological study, novel paramyxoviruses discovered through surveillance of bats in Brazil were fully sequenced to allow for a range of genetic analyses, including the …

The Role Of Folate In The Association Between Perinatal Air Pollution Exposure And Birth Outcomes In Lanzhou, China, Rebecca Ann Wong Jan 2016

The Role Of Folate In The Association Between Perinatal Air Pollution Exposure And Birth Outcomes In Lanzhou, China, Rebecca Ann Wong

Public Health Theses

Background: China’s rapid economic and industrial development over the past few decades has been accompanied by tremendous increases in air pollutant emissions and come at a serious cost to the environment and public health. Recent research has revealed an increased risk of adverse birth outcomes associated with perinatal air pollution exposure. Although the mechanisms by which air pollutants contribute to adverse birth outcomes have not yet been established, folate intake has been shown to counteract several of the hypothesized biological pathways.

Hypothesis: Dietary folate intake and folic acid supplementation modify the association between perinatal air pollution exposure (PM10, NO2, SO2) …

Aldehyde Dehydrogenase 1 (Aldh1) Genes In Cancer Clinical Prognosis Outcomes, Mengyi Ding

Public Health Theses

ABSTRACT

Background & Hypothesis

It has become clear that ALDH1 genes are involved in the pathobiology of various human cancers. Several lines of evidence indicated that ALDH1 gene expression in tumors may be associated with clinical prognosis outcomes. This hypothesis of our study is that ALDH1 genes may be used to predict human cancer prognosis. In order to test this hypothesis, a systematic review of published articles, a meta-analysis using Random-Effects model was conducted to assess the association between ALDH1 genes and clinicopathological features as well as survival outcomes.

Methods

Using PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science, this study identified …

Vitamin D Status And Age Of Menarche:, Alexandra Hua

Public Health Theses

Early age of menarche (AOM) increases risk for chronic disorders, including cardiovascular disease and related mortality, type 2 diabetes, and breast cancer. Vitamin D deficiency may be linked to earlier onset of menstruation, but there is limited research examining vitamin D and its association with AOM. The objective of this study was to examine the association between vitamin D levels and AOM by analyzing the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2001-2010. We hypothesized that that vitamin D deficiency is associated with earlier age of menarche in adolescent and early adult females in the United States. Cross-sectional …

Lifetime Residential Water Source And Thyroid Cancer Risk: A Connecticut Based Case-Control Study, Hannah Grace Kaneck Jan 2016

Lifetime Residential Water Source And Thyroid Cancer Risk: A Connecticut Based Case-Control Study, Hannah Grace Kaneck

Public Health Theses

While incident thyroid cancer diagnoses continue to increase at a rate faster than any other cancer in the US, questions about environmental exposures’ link to small malignancy increases persist. Nitrate consumption as a predictor for thyroid cancer has become a topic of interest due to their ubiquitous contamination of water and food supplies. No epidemiological studies have looked at the correlation of residential water source over an entire lifetime and its relation to thyroid cancer. A Connecticut based case-control study conducted in 2010-2011, including 462 histologically confirmed incident thyroid cancer cases and 498 Connecticut based controls used multivariate unconditional logistic …

Spermatogenesis Drives Rapid Gene Creation And Masculinization Of The X Chromosome In Stalk-Eyed Flies (Diopsidae), Richard H. Baker, Apurva Narechania, Rob Desalle, Philip M. Johns, Josephiine A. Reinhardt, Gerald S. Wilkinson Jan 2016

Spermatogenesis Drives Rapid Gene Creation And Masculinization Of The X Chromosome In Stalk-Eyed Flies (Diopsidae), Richard H. Baker, Apurva Narechania, Rob Desalle, Philip M. Johns, Josephiine A. Reinhardt, Gerald S. Wilkinson

Biology

Throughout their evolutionary history, genomes acquire new genetic material that facilitates phenotypic innovation and diversification. Developmental processes associated with reproduction are particularly likely to involve novel genes. Abundant gene creation impacts the evolution of chromosomal gene content and general regulatory mechanisms such as dosage compensation. Numerous studies in model organisms have found complex and, at times contradictory, relationships among these genomic attributes highlighting the need to examine these patterns in other systems characterized by abundant sexual selection. Therefore, we examined the association among novel gene creation, tissue-specific gene expression, and chromosomal gene content within stalk-eyed flies. Flies in this family …

Fire Severity Controlled Susceptibility To A 1940s Spruce Beetle Outbreak In Colorado, Usa, Dominik Kulakowski, Thomas T. Veblen, Peter Beb Jan 2016

Fire Severity Controlled Susceptibility To A 1940s Spruce Beetle Outbreak In Colorado, Usa, Dominik Kulakowski, Thomas T. Veblen, Peter Beb

Geography

The frequency, magnitude, and size of forest disturbances are increasing globally. Much recent research has focused on how the occurrence of one disturbance may affect susceptibility to subsequent disturbances. While much has been learned about such linked disturbances, the strength of the interactions is likely to be contingent on the severity of disturbances as well as climatic conditions, both of which can affect disturbance intensity and tree resistance to disturbances. Subalpine forests in western Colorado were affected by extensive and severe wildfires in the late 19th century and an extensive and severe outbreak of spruce beetle (Dendroctonus rufipennis) in the …

Socioeconomic Rights Adjudication In Canada: Can The Minimum Core Help In Adjudicating The Rights To Life And Security Of The Person Under The Canadian Charter Of Rights And Freedoms?, Ania Kwadrans Jan 2016

Socioeconomic Rights Adjudication In Canada: Can The Minimum Core Help In Adjudicating The Rights To Life And Security Of The Person Under The Canadian Charter Of Rights And Freedoms?, Ania Kwadrans

Journal of Law and Social Policy

Violations of the minimum core economic and social rights (ESR) deprive society’s most vulnerable individuals and groups of the very resources that are essential to life and basic well-being. States have an obligation to ensure that meaningful remedies are available for such infringements. Though articulating a minimum core for ESR poses challenges, and critics of the concept find it beyond the institutional competence of courts, it remains an important tool for adjudication. The minimum core focuses the inquiry on the underlying goals of human rights: the protection of vulnerable and marginalized groups from the most serious forms of deprivation and …

Music And The Child, Natalie Sarrazin Jan 2016

Music And The Child, Natalie Sarrazin

Milne Open Textbooks

Children are inherently musical. They respond to music and learn through music. Music expresses children’s identity and heritage, teaches them to belong to a culture, and develops their cognitive well-being and inner self worth. As professional instructors, childcare workers, or students looking forward to a career working with children, we should continuously search for ways to tap into children’s natural reservoir of enthusiasm for singing, moving and experimenting with instruments. But how, you might ask? What music is appropriate for the children I’m working with? How can music help inspire a well-rounded child? How do I reach and teach children …
