Microbial Dynamics Within Shed Mucosal Secretions Of Hirudo Verbana, The European Medicinal Leech, Brittany Maree Ott

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Microbes are widespread throughout our planet, residing in soils, oceans, and even beneath the arctic glaciers. Most interact with each other and other life forms, and there is no known complex organism that lacks an associated microbiome. These microbial symbionts are critical to the survival and proliferation of their host by assisting in nutrient provisioning, physiological development, immunological priming, providing protection from pathogens, contributing to predator evasion, etc. As such, the transmission of these symbionts is a crucial aspect of host biology. Despite a growing appreciation for the prevalence of mixed transmission (incorporating vertical, or from a parental route, and …

The following research question guided this study: What are the similarities and differences between schools in which a shooting occurred and schools in which a shooting was averted? To answer this question, this study compared school shootings and averted school shootings in K-12 schools between January 2007 and December 2013, searching for general themes to analyze in order to add to the literature on averted school shootings. This study …

Hollow Men: Colonial Forms, Irish Subjects, And The Great Famine In Modernist Literature, 1890-1930, Aaron Matthew Percich Jan 2016

Hollow Men: Colonial Forms, Irish Subjects, And The Great Famine In Modernist Literature, 1890-1930, Aaron Matthew Percich

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation traces the impact and influence of Ireland's Great Famine (145-1852) on the formal developments of Irish and British modernism. The Famine is arguably the founding event for colonial Ireland's entry into modernity. This forceful event and forced legacy allows us to rethink modernism's developmental trajectory; rather than a movement deriving out of metropolitan experimentation, I argue for modernism's colonial roots. Colonial events like the Famine or what I term colonial atrocities are marked by mass death and cultural degradation, and further facilitated by the technological, ideological, and exploitative practices deriving from modernity. Representative practices that arise in response …

Immunological Response To Haemonchus Contortus Antigen In Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells Of Parasite Resistant And Susceptible Sheep, Jesica Rae Jacobs

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Parasitism by Haemonchus contortus is the greatest concern of sheep producers and results in billions of dollars in economic loss each year. St. Croix hair sheep are naturally resistant to H. contortus infection, but have body characteristics which are unfavorable for production. Resistance to H. contortus is immune mediated; characterized by a T helper type 2 (Th2) response, however the mechanism of the development of immune response is not known. In these studies, immunological responses of parasite resistant St. Croix sheep and Suffolk sheep peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) are evaluated in response to H. contortus antigens. Three uninfected H. …

Assessment Of Clarias Gariepinus As A Biological Control Agent Against Mosquito Larvae, Buze Chala, Berhanu Erko, Abebe Animut, Abraham Degarege, Beyene Petros

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

BACKGROUND: The emergence and spread of insecticide resistant mosquitoes renewed interest in investigating the use of larvivorous fish as a biological control agent. The potential of Clarias gariepinus fish in controlling Anopheles arabiensis and culicine larvae was assessed under laboratory and semi-field conditions.

RESULTS: Small size (15-20 cm) C. gariepinus fish consumed greater number of mosquito larvae than the large size fish (25-40 cm) in the multivariate regression model (β = 13.36, 95 % CI = 4.57, 22.15). The Anopheles larvae consumed was greater in number than the culicines larvae consumed by the fish (β = 12.10, 95 % CI …

The Communicability Of Nature, Meg E. Smith Jan 2016

The Communicability Of Nature, Meg E. Smith

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

How do we experience nature? In what way can we find ourselves at one with nature, immersed in the experience of nature, and still allow nature a level of healthy “otherness,” of individual separation? Writers, scientists, and lost people have long gone to the wilderness, to nature, in search of answers to life’s mysteries. In effect it has become a destination, a place apart from humans, where it exists only as a haven and place of meditation. Nature has lost its own individuality, its sense of presence as an entity in and of itself. When we seek nature in order …

Grizcode: A Web Series About The University Of Montana From The Student Perspective, Darien W. Gostas

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

The point of this paper is to explore the development, purpose, and challenges of making the web series, GrizCode. It is not as scientific, as it is a narrative of what came to be. The goal of GrizCode was to paint a picture of what student life is like at the University of Montana, giving tips and life advice while celebrating and parodying what it means to be a “Griz.” It consisted of floating head type interviews of students over a green screen background of animations, with fun upbeat music that would keep the audience engaged and promote a joyful …

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) intends to monitor mosquito populations across its broad geographical range of sites because of their prevalence in food webs, sensitivity to abiotic factors, and relevance for human health. We describe the design of mosquito population sampling in the context of NEON's long-term continental scale monitoring program, emphasizing the sampling design schedule, priorities, and collection methods. Freely available NEON data and associated field and laboratory samples, will increase our understanding of how mosquito abundance, demography, diversity, and phenology are responding to land use and climate change.

One way that museums combat this challenge is through an engaging visitor experience. To explore this issue, Old Sturbridge Village is used as a case study. It is a living history museum, depicting the 1830s, that is located in central Massachusetts. OSV was founded in 1946. The research is coupled with literature on museum visitor experiences. This mixed methods study utilizes interviews of employees at the museum, participant observation …

Continuation Of A Life Worth Living: Empathetic Design For The Alzheimer’S Community, Leslie Hulbert Jan 2016

Continuation Of A Life Worth Living: Empathetic Design For The Alzheimer’S Community, Leslie Hulbert

Architecture Theses and Projects

This thesis’ mission is to create a comfortable environment for those suffering with Alzheimer’s and dementia. The institutional environments of the past are not sufficient for such individuals and their families. A community atmosphere is what they need; an entire complex just for them. The victims of this terrible memory defeating disease just want to go home. For many, this is not possible, therefore they should be given an environment that reminds them of home. They should have their own space that is customizable and warm. They should also be free to wander at their leisure. Their freedom should not …

Investigating The Context-Dependent Effects Of Plant Mutualists On Plant And Herbivore Performance In An Agricultural Legume, Catherine Ann Ausland Jan 2016

Investigating The Context-Dependent Effects Of Plant Mutualists On Plant And Herbivore Performance In An Agricultural Legume, Catherine Ann Ausland

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Nutritional symbioses between plants and plant-root mutualists are not only important players in nutrient acquisition by plants but contribute to nutrient cycling, biological community composition and even plant defense elicitation. Furthermore, several studies have purported that anthropogenic nutrient loading may disrupt these symbioses by effectively removing plant dependence on symbionts for nutrient acquisition, while some have evidenced that the presence of another symbiont may ameliorate the negative effects of nutrient loading on said first symbiont. In addition, less is known on how nutrient loading effects may influence higher trophic levels, such as insect herbivores. This study investigated how arbuscular mycorrhizal …

Rendered Invisible: African American Low-Wage Workers And The Workplace Exploitation Paradigm, Llezlie Coleman Jan 2016

Rendered Invisible: African American Low-Wage Workers And The Workplace Exploitation Paradigm, Llezlie Coleman

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

The narrative of low-wage worker exploitation has increasingly narrowed in focus to reflect the experiences of undocumented immigrant workers whose immigration status makes them particularly vulnerable to wage theft and other denials of their substantive workplace rights. Indeed, much of the scholarship in this area rests solidly at the intersection of immigrant justice and employment law. This article disrupts this paradigm by arguing that this limited narrative has rendered African American low-wage workers invisible. It also draws from the voices of low-wage worker advocates who have borrowed from current activism to announce that #BlackWorkersMatter. Given the role of paradigms in …

Language Rich Early Childhood Classroom: Simple But Powerful Beginnings, Erin E. Flynn Jan 2016

Language Rich Early Childhood Classroom: Simple But Powerful Beginnings, Erin E. Flynn

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article highlights research exploring the benefits of small group storytelling as a way to promote rich language in early childhood classrooms. Using the storytelling of children from a preschool classroom serving lower SES children, the collaborative affordances of story circles are explored. Results show that small group storytelling engages children in ways of using language associated with literacy learning. When storytelling, children use language in extended, multi-clause turns, relaying what happened in another context. Story requires children to communicate what happened as well as the interpersonal significance of events. Small group storytelling also gives children a chance to practice …

Extreme variability in abundance of California salmon populations is often ascribed to ocean conditions, yet relatively little is known about their marine life-history. To investigate which ocean conditions influence their distribution and abundance, we surveyed juvenile Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) within the California Current (central California (37o 30’ N) to Newport, Oregon (44o 00’ N)) for a two-week period over three summers (2010-2012). At each station, we measured chlorophyll a as an indicator of primary productivity, acoustic-based metrics of zooplankton density as an indicator of potential prey availability, and physical characteristics such as bottom depth, temperature, and salinity. …

The Role Of Foxo Transcription Factors In Alcohol-Induced Deficient Fracture Repair, Philip M. Roper Jan 2016

The Role Of Foxo Transcription Factors In Alcohol-Induced Deficient Fracture Repair, Philip M. Roper

Dissertations

Proper and complete repair of a bone fracture is essential in quality of life maintenance, but poor healing and fracture malunion are still medically and socially relevant problems. Alcohol abuse impairs normal fracture healing, leading to delayed or incomplete union. This dissertation aims to clarify mechanisms behind this alcohol-induced impaired healing, thereby elucidating potential methods of intervention.

Alcohol-induced oxidative stress has been linked to many morbidities associated with alcohol abuse. This dissertation elucidates a potential mechanism through which alcohol inhibits fracture healing by increasing oxidative stress. Using a rodent model, I found that alcohol exposure decreases fracture callus formation and …
