The Importance Of Passive Sustainable Design, Caitlin Raymond
The Importance Of Passive Sustainable Design, Caitlin Raymond
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Sustainability is a topic regularly discussed within today’s culture. Many people are worried about society’s future due to pollution, excessive use of nonrenewable resources, and more. Even with all of the growing awareness and promotion, the historical context and more specifically the passive design techniques used in buildings have received little attention. It is imperative to increase this awareness, as well as increase the application of passive sustainable techniques to ensure that sustainable building is efficient and effective. This project has two portions, a literature review and a design project. The literature review assembles research and techniques collected on passive …

Unique Behavioral And Neurochemical Effects Induced By Repeated Adolescent Consumption Of Caffeine-Mixed Alcohol In C57bl/6 Mice., Meridith T. Robins, Julie Lu, Richard M. Van Rijn
Borch Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology Faculty Publications
The number of highly caffeinated products has increased dramatically in the past few years. Among these products, highly caffeinated energy drinks are the most heavily advertised and purchased, which has resulted in increased incidences of co-consumption of energy drinks with alcohol. Despite the growing number of adolescents and young adults reporting caffeine-mixed alcohol use, knowledge of the potential consequences associated with co-consumption has been limited to survey-based results and in-laboratory human behavioral testing. Here, we investigate the effect of repeated adolescent (post-natal days P35-61) exposure to caffeine-mixed alcohol in C57BL/6 mice on common drug-related behaviors such as locomotor sensitivity, drug …

A Tomographic-Piv Investigation Of Vapor-Induced Flow Structures In Confined Jet Impingement Boiling, M. J. Rau, P. P. Vlachos, S V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
Tomographic particle image velocimetry (PIV) is used to study the effect of confinement gap height on the liquid flow characteristics in jet impingement boiling. This first application of tomographic PIV to flow boiling is significant given the complexity of confined two-phase jet impingement. A jet of subcooled wa- ter at a Reynolds number of 5,0 0 0 impinges onto a circular heat source undergoing boiling heat transfer at a constant heat input. Confinement gap heights of 8, 4, and 2 jet diameters are investigated. A visual hull method is used to reconstruct the time-varying regions of the vapor in the …

Experiment Design And Training Data Quality Of Inverse Model For Short-Term Building Energy Forecasting, Liang Zhang, Jin Wen, Can Cui, Xiwang Li, Teresa Wu
International High Performance Buildings Conference
For data-driven building energy forecasting modeling, the quality of training data strongly affects a model’s accuracy and cost-effectiveness. In order to obtain high-quality training data within a short time period, experiment design, active learning, or excitation is becoming increasingly important, especially for nonlinear systems such as building energy systems. Experiment design and system excitation have been widely studied and applied in fields such as robotics and automobile industry for their model development. But these methods have hardly been applied for building energy modeling. This paper presents an overall discussion on the topic of applying system excitation for developing building energy …

Prediction Of Air-Side Particulate Fouling Of Hvac&R Heat Exchangers, H. Inamdar, E. A. Groll, J. A. Weibel, S V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
Air-to-refrigerant heat exchangers used in heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration systems routinely experience air-side fouling due to the presence of particulates in outdoor and indoor environments. The influence on the performance of the heat exchanger, in terms of heat transfer efficiency and pressure drop imposed, depends on the extent of air-side fouling. Fouling of a heat exchanger is determined by a variety of parameters such as the dimensions of the heat exchanger, physical properties of the airborne particulates, and airflow conditions over the heat exchange surfaces. A comprehensive model is developed to deterministically calculate the extent of fouling of a …

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is the main pathogen responsible for hand, foot and mouth disease with severe neurological complications and even death in young children. We have recently identified a highly potent anti-EV71 neutralizing monoclonal antibody, termed D5. Here we investigated the structural basis for recognition of EV71 by the antibody D5. Four three-dimensional structures of EV71 particles in complex with IgG or Fab of D5 were reconstructed by cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) single particle analysis all at subnanometer resolutions. The most critical EV71 mature virion-Fab structure was resolved to a resolution of 4.8 Å, which is rare in cryo-EM studies of …

A Review Of The Evidence Supporting The Taste Of Non‐Esterified Fatty Acids In Humans, Cordelia Running, Richard D. Mattes
Department of Food Science Faculty Publications
Dietary fats contribute to the flavor of foods by multiple mechanisms. A role for their taste has only recently gained credence. Current evidence indicates non‐esterified fatty acids (NEFA) are the effective stimuli for the taste component. CD36 and GPR120 are putative receptors, but may not fully account for the totality of the range of sensations elicited by fatty acids. The sensory quality of long‐chain NEFA is not adequately characterized by commonly accepted taste primary qualities and has been termed oleogustus. There is marked individual variability in sensitivity to the taste of NEFA prompting hypotheses of genetic and environmental determinants. Though …
Sparse Non-Negative Matrix Factorization For Mesh Segmentation, Tim Mcgraw, Jisun Kang, Donald Herring
Sparse Non-Negative Matrix Factorization For Mesh Segmentation, Tim Mcgraw, Jisun Kang, Donald Herring
Computer Graphics Technology Faculty Publications
We present a method for 3D mesh segmentation based on sparse non-negative matrix factorization (NMF). Image analysis techniques based on NMF have been shown to decompose images into semantically meaningful local features. Since the features and coefficients are represented in terms of non-negative values, the features contribute to the resulting images in an intuitive, additive fashion. Like spectral mesh segmentation, our method relies on the construction of an affinity matrix which depends on the geometric properties of the mesh. We show that segmentation based on the NMF is simpler to implement, and can result in more meaningful segmentation results than …

To Honor Our Past: Historical Research, Library History And The Historiographical Imperative: Conceptual Reflections And Exploratory Observations, Jean-Pierre V. M. Hérubel
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
This exploratory discussion considers history of libraries, in its broadest context; moreover, it frames the entire enterprise of pursuing history as it relates to LIS in the context of doing history and of doing history vis-à-vis LIS. Is it valuable intellectually for LIS professionals to consider their own history, writing historically oriented research, and what is the nature of this research within the professionalization of LIS itself as both practice and discipline? Necessarily conceptual and offering theoretical insight, this discussion perforce tenders the idea that historiographical innovations and other disciplinary approaches and perspectives can invigorate library history beyond its current …

E-Book Reading Practices In Different Subject Areas: An Exploratory Log Analysis, Robert S. Freeman, E. Stewart Saunders
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Print books pose inherent difficulties for researchers who want to observe users’ natural in-book reading patterns. With e-books and logs of their use it is now possible to track several aspects of users’ interactions inside e-books, including the number and duration of their sessions with an e-book and the order in which pages are viewed. This chapter reports on a study of one-year of EBL user log data from Purdue University to identify different reading patterns or ways in which users navigate within different types of e-books—authored monographs vs. edited collections--and in e-books in different subject areas. The analysis of …

Cultivar Identification And Genetic Relatedness Among 25 Black Walnut (Juglans Nigra) Clones Based On Microsatellite Markers, Kejia Pang, Keith E. Woeste, Charles Michler
Department of Forestry & Natural Resources Faculty Publications
A set of eight microsatellite markers was used to genotype 25 black walnut (Juglans nigra L.) clones within the Purdue University germplasm repository. The identities of 212 ramets were verified using the same eight microsatellite markers. Some trees were mislabeled and corrected as to clone using analysis of microsatellite markers. A genetic dendrogram was constructed to show the degree of genetic relatedness between clones. Two additional dendrograms, one based on crown architecture traits and the other on tree size and form traits, were also built and compared with the genetic dendrogram. The genetic dendrogram showed that these eight molecular markers …

Effect Of Cooling Pad Installation On Indoor Airflow Distribution In A Tunnel-Ventilated Laying-Hen House, Hui Xue, Zhu Qiang, Ji-Qin Ni, Li Baoming, Shi Zhengxiang, Zhao Shumei, Wang Yu
School of Agricultural & Biological Engineering Faculty Publications
Extra cooling pads on the sidewalls are needed for larger poultry houses using tunnel ventilation system. Preliminary study showed that the airflow velocity going through different aisles varies greatly when the extra pads are installed at the end of sidewalls, making a “[”-shape air inlet. Combined with field tests, the CFD (computational fluid dynamics) technology was used to study the uniformity of airflow distribution in a tunnel-ventilated laying-hen house. The air distribution was first monitored in a layer house to find the main reason resulting in the variations of airflows in different aisles. Then CFD simulations were carried out with …

Expectation, Expectoration And Disgust: Information Manipulation Alters Spitting Efficiency, A Proxy For Salivary Flow, Cordelia Running, John E. Hayes
Department of Nutrition Science Faculty Publications
Saliva is becoming an increasingly useful research material across multiple fields of inquiry, including biomedical, dental, psychological, nutritional, and food choice research. However, both the flow rate and protein composition of stimulated saliva differ as a function of the collection method. We hypothesized that the context in which a salivary stimulus is presented to participants may alter salivation via behavioral (i.e., spitting efficiency) or top down cognitive effects. We presented participants with a constant stimulus (commercially available green tea) in two distinct contexts, once where the tea was described as a food item (“tea”) and once where it was described …

Assessing Patient-Centered Communication In Medical Education: A Crystallized Approach To Understanding The Quality, Nature, And Form Of Feedback By Standardized Patients, Simone Kathe Brennan
Wayne State University Dissertations
Patient-centered Communication (PCC) is the gold standard in effective clinical communication. Feedback from Standardized Patients (SPs) provides one strategy to teach PCC. SP feedback is highly valued, but little is understood about its quality, nature, and the form in which it is actually delivered. Methods: Using the meta-method of crystallization (Ellingson, 2009), I conducted three unique studies, content analysis, iterative thematic analysis, and narrative analysis of SP feedback. These analyses were conducted using transcribed SP feedback from a multi-station, residency-based Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE). SPs in this OSCE were trained using the adapted version of the Kalamazoo Essential Elements …

Coyote distribution and habitat use, diet and foraging behavior and space use patterns were investigated in the greater Detroit area of southeastern Michigan. We found evidence of coyotes on 24 of 30 (80%) suburban and 7 of 11 (64%) urban plots. Overall fifty-eight percent of coyote evidence was found within edge habitats, with den sites and tracks the only types of evidence found strictly in interior habitats. Land cover around evidence points included more wooded land cover than expected in suburban areas, suggesting the importance of tree cover for coyote occupancy, and more open space and wooded land cover than …
Muscle Metaboreflex And Arterial Baroreflex: Action, Interaction And Altered Control In Heart Failure, Jasdeep Kaur
Muscle Metaboreflex And Arterial Baroreflex: Action, Interaction And Altered Control In Heart Failure, Jasdeep Kaur
Wayne State University Dissertations
Stimulation of skeletal muscle afferents by metabolites that accumulate in the exercising muscle elicits a large pressor response, termed the muscle metaboreflex. Muscle metaboreflex activation during submaximal exercise induces large increases in arterial pressure, cardiac output, heart rate and ventricular contractility however, the vascular responses have varied in previous studies. We addressed three specific questions: 1) what are the mechanism(s) regulating the non-ischemic vasculature during muscle metaboreflex activation in normal subjects, 2) whether muscle metaboreflex activation vasoconstricts the ischemic active muscle from which this reflex originates and if this vasoconstriction is exaggerated in heart failure and 3) how do the …
Neural Circuitry Deficits Associated With Dysfunctional Myelin, Kathleen June Maheras
Neural Circuitry Deficits Associated With Dysfunctional Myelin, Kathleen June Maheras
Wayne State University Dissertations
In the current study, we have generated mutant mice that lack Claudin 11 (Cldn11) tight junctions in CNS myelin sheaths. In myelin sheaths, Cldn11 forms tight junctions located along the outer and inner edges of the membrane spiral, preventing ions and small molecules from entering the intramyelinic space. The function of Cldn11 tight junctions is to improve the passive properties of the myelin membrane, by increasing membrane resistance and reducing capacitance, thereby improving the speed of saltatory conduction. In the absence of Cldn11, conduction velocity is slowed, most dramatically in small diameter myelinated fibers, somewhat analogous to reducing myelin thickness. …
Development Of Carbon Based Neural Interface For Neural Stimulation/Recording And Neurotransmitter Detection, Wenwen Yi
Wayne State University Dissertations
Electrical stimulation and recording of neural cells have been widely used in basic neuroscience studies, neural prostheses, and clinical therapies. Stable neural interfaces that effectively communicate with the nervous system via electrodes are of great significance. Recently, flexible neural interfaces that combine carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and soft polymer substrates have generated tremendous interests. CNT based microelectrode arrays (MEAs) have shown enhanced electrochemical properties compared to commonly used electrode materials such as tungsten, platinum or titanium nitride. On the other hand, the soft polymer substrate can overcome the mechanical mismatch between the traditional rigid electrodes (or silicon shank) and the soft …
Utilization Of A Large-Scale Wireless Sensor Network For Intrusion Detection And Border Surveillance, Mosad Helsan Alkhathami
Utilization Of A Large-Scale Wireless Sensor Network For Intrusion Detection And Border Surveillance, Mosad Helsan Alkhathami
Wayne State University Dissertations
To control the border more effectively, countries may deploy a detection system that enables real-time surveillance of border integrity. Events such as border crossings need to be monitored in real time so that any border entries can be noted by border security forces and destinations marked for apprehension. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are promising for border security surveillance because they enable enforcement teams to monitor events in the physical environment. In this work, probabilistic models have been presented to investigate senor development schemes while considering the environmental factors that affect the sensor performance. Simulation studies have been carried out using …
Investigation Of Mutations In Nuclear Genes That Affect The Atp Synthase, Russell Dsouza
Investigation Of Mutations In Nuclear Genes That Affect The Atp Synthase, Russell Dsouza
Wayne State University Dissertations
The F1 domain is the catalytic subunit of the mitochondrial ATP synthase. Studies with respiratory-deficient yeast identified ATP1 and ATP2 as nuclear genes encoding the alpha and beta subunits, respectively, of the mitochondrial F1-ATPase. The mutations in the atp1 and atp2 genes were cloned and sequenced, and they appear to affect the ATP synthase. Most yeast strains with mutations in the or the subunit primarily show an F1 assembly defective phenotype. This feature is similar to the assembly-defective mutants missing the chaperones required for assembly of the F1 oligomer or either the alpha/beta subunits.
Some of the atp2 and atp1 …
