The Impact Of Direct-Fed Microbials And Enzymes On The Health And Performance Of Holstein Cattle With Emphasis On Colostrum Quality And Serum Immunoglobulins In The Calf, Shona Brittany Ort

Master's Theses and Capstones

Research has shown that direct-fed microbials (DFM) and enzyme supplementation can impact the dry matter intake (DMI), milk production, and milk composition. However, limited research has evaluated the impact of DFM and enzyme supplementation on colostrum quality and the uptake of the Immunoglobulins A and G (IgA and IgG) by calves. In this study, 36 multiparous Holstein cows were blocked by expected calving date and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments 3 weeks prior to calving and remained on these treatments until week 8 postpartum. These treatments were: 1) 0 g of DFM and enzyme (control), 2) 45.40 g/d …

Kelp Meal (Ascophyllum Nodosum) Supplementation To Organic Lactating Dairy Cows: Effects On Milk Production, Milk Composition, Animal Health And Nutrient Utilization During The Non-Grazing And Grazing Seasons In New Hampshire, Nicole Theresa Antaya

Master's Theses and Capstones

This thesis examines the feeding of kelp meal (KM), most commonly produced from the species Ascophyllum nodosum to lactating dairy cattle. In the first experiment KM was fed at incremental levels to lactating jersey cattle over the winter season in Lee, New Hampshire. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of incremental amounts (0, 57, 113, and 170 g/d) of KM on animal performance and milk iodine concentration in dairy cows fed high-forage diets. While animal performance was not improved, milk iodine output increased linearly in cows fed KM. Trends and quadratic effects were observed for nutrient …

Methods In Culturing Algae And The Addition Of Algae To Enhance The Performance Of Gravel Roughing Filtration Pretreatment, Kyle Daniel Hay Jan 2016

Methods In Culturing Algae And The Addition Of Algae To Enhance The Performance Of Gravel Roughing Filtration Pretreatment, Kyle Daniel Hay

Master's Theses and Capstones

Gravel roughing filtration (GRF) is often used to pretreat marginal source waters prior to the main filtration process. GRF is a proven way to consistently improve water quality and reduce the effects of low water quality spikes such as during a precipitation event. This research is aimed at improving GRF performance through the application of various forms of algae. Research was broken down into four components: culturing and transferring algae, growing filamentous algae on the filter bed of a downflow GRF, applying an algae coating to the surface of gravel media, and testing a field-scale horizontal roughing filter (HRF) to …

The Characterization Of A Putative Perilipin-5 Splice Variant, Cara C. Hardy Jan 2016

The Characterization Of A Putative Perilipin-5 Splice Variant, Cara C. Hardy

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

Lipid droplets, or LDs, are very important and dynamic organelles in cells. LDs are stores

of fat for use in metabolism, membrane construction, and signaling. Dysfunction of lipid droplet formation or breakdown can lead to many health risks, such as atherosclerosis and diabetes. Lipid droplet regulation occurs primarily via a dynamic and complex coat of proteins on the surface of the droplet. This work sought to characterize a novel variant, or new protein, derived from the sequence of the parent chain of perilipin-5, which we have termed perilipin-5B. Perilipin-5 is a member of the perilipin family of lipid droplet coat …

Nidus Idearum. Scilogs, Ii: De Rerum Consectatione, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Welcome into my scientific lab! My lab[oratory] is a virtual facility with noncontrolled conditions in which I mostly perform scientific meditation and chats: a nest of ideas (nidus idearum, in Latin). I called the jottings herein scilogs (truncations of the words scientific, and gr. Λόγος – appealing rather to its original meanings "ground", "opinion", "expectation"), combining the welly of both science and informal (via internet) talks (in English, French, and Romanian). In this second book of scilogs collected from my nest of ideas, one may find new and old questions and solutions, some of them already put at work, others …

Key Socio-Ecclesial Themes Arising In The Asian American Community (Chapter One Of Evangelical Pilgrims From The East: Faith Fundamentals Of Korean American Protestant Diasporas), Sunggu Yang Jan 2016

Key Socio-Ecclesial Themes Arising In The Asian American Community (Chapter One Of Evangelical Pilgrims From The East: Faith Fundamentals Of Korean American Protestant Diasporas), Sunggu Yang

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

The chapter examines the socio-ecclesial or practical theological situation of Asian Americans, of which Korean Americans are a part and out of which Korean American evangelical diasporas seek their unique cultural faith formation-the topics of the following chapters.1 The Asian American socio-ecclesial context is a hard one to analyze because of its cultural complexity. Mainly, the complexity comes from the dual identity or double consciousness of Asian American life-being Asian on the one hand and American on the other. This hybridity without a doubt complicates the cultural investigation of Asian American Christianity. At the same time, however, that hybridity is …

The Role Of Oxytocin In Modulating Neural Oscillations In Nulliparous Women, Xiaoyue Mona Guo

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The hormone oxytocin (OT) has been implicated in social cognition and behavior as well as in modulating important affiliative relationships such as parenting; meanwhile, intranasal OT administration is gaining popularity as a means to modulate neural activity in brain regions during experimental tasks. However, the neural mechanisms underscoring the changes associated with OT administration have yet to be fully elucidated. Using electroencephalography (EEG), this thesis project aims to further our understanding of how OT affects brain activity and response to infant cues. In a double-blind placebo controlled design, OT’s effect on resting-state neural oscillations and event-related potentials (ERPs) to face …

Association Of Tuberculosis And Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor In A South African Population, Duncan Reid Reid

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that plays an important role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune inflammatory diseases. Functional promoter variants in the MIF gene influence host susceptibility to different infectious diseases, including tuberculosis (TB). However, the effect of functional MIF promoter variants in subjects with co-infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and TB, who comprise over 12 percent of new TB cases globally and 60 percent of new TB cases in South Africa, has been examined only in one prior study. Here, an association study was carried out in a clinically well-defined rural population in KwaZulu-Natal, …

Effects Of Nox-1 Inhibition On Real-Time Blood Nitric Oxide And Hydrogen Peroxide In Acute Hyperglycemia, Ashley Mawhinney Jan 2016

Effects Of Nox-1 Inhibition On Real-Time Blood Nitric Oxide And Hydrogen Peroxide In Acute Hyperglycemia, Ashley Mawhinney

PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship

Hyperglycemia has been associated with vascular endothelial dysfunction in part by a reduction in nitric oxide (NO) production and increased oxidative stress (e.g., increased superoxide (SO) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Endothelial-derived NO can be significantly reduced by increased SO/H2O2 in part by the activation of NADPH oxidase during hyperglycemia. Of the 7 NADPH oxidase isoforms, NADPH oxidase isoform 1 (NOX1) is mainly expressed in the vasculature and may play a major role in hyperglycemia induced oxidative stress and vascular endothelial dysfunction. This hypothesis was tested by measuring blood NO and H2O2 levels in …

Evaluation Of The Efficacy Of Candidate Probiotics For Disease Prevention In Shellfish Hatcheries, Saebom Sohn Jan 2016

Evaluation Of The Efficacy Of Candidate Probiotics For Disease Prevention In Shellfish Hatcheries, Saebom Sohn

Open Access Dissertations

In the United States of America, oyster production is an important component of the seafood economy in many communities in coastal states. The severe impact of disease outbreaks and mass mortality of oyster larvae in hatcheries impacts production, since the oyster industry is largely dependent on hatchery and nursery production. The use of probiotics has been proposed as a potential preventative measure to limit the impact of bacterial diseases in shellfish hatcheries. In previous laboratory studies, the probiotic bacteria Phaeobacter inhibens S4 and Bacillus pumillus RI06-95 improved the survival of eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) larvae against the pathogens …

Design And Development Of Ph Sensitive Nanomedicine For Targeted Drug Delivery, Mohan C. Pereira Jan 2016

Design And Development Of Ph Sensitive Nanomedicine For Targeted Drug Delivery, Mohan C. Pereira

Open Access Dissertations

Targeted drug delivery has been the major topic in drug formulation and delivery. As nanomedicine emerges to create nano-scale therapeutics and diagnostics, it is still essential to embed targeting capability to these novel systems to make them useful. Design of robust nanomedicine with universal targeting capabilities could provide effective solutions to the ever increasing demand of curing and preventing major diseases.

Diseases like carcinoma & ischemia are accompanied with hypoxia and acidosis. Because of the elevated glycolysis and acidosis in the diseased cells, they show a lower pH in the surface of the cells which promotes the appearance of aggressive …

The Potential Of Indonesian Microalgal Strains To Support Eastern White Shrimp (Litopenaeus Vannamei) Aquaculture, Wa Iba Jan 2016

The Potential Of Indonesian Microalgal Strains To Support Eastern White Shrimp (Litopenaeus Vannamei) Aquaculture, Wa Iba

Open Access Dissertations

Indonesia is well known for abundant aquatic resources, both marine and freshwater, including fishes, zooplankton and phytoplanktonic microalgae. However, relatively little information is available about microalgal resources despite their potential to be used as live feed in the hatchery phase of aquaculture of a number of marine species. The use of local microalgae is desirable in local hatcheries because they tend to grow better with high yield under local conditions, thus reducing the risk of culture crash and production cost while preventing disease vectors that may introduced by foreign microalgae strains. In this dissertation, the potential of Indonesian microalgae to …

A Biomimetic, Energy-Harvesting, Obstacle-Avoiding, Path-Planning Algorithm For Uavs, Snorri Gudmundsson

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

This dissertation presents two new approaches to energy harvesting for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). One method is based on the Potential Flow Method (PFM); the other method seeds a wind-field map based on updraft peak analysis and then applies a variant of the Bellman-Ford algorithm to find the minimum-cost path. Both methods are enhanced by taking into account the performance characteristics of the aircraft using advanced performance theory. The combined approach yields five possible trajectories from which the one with the minimum energy cost is selected. The dissertation concludes by using the developed theory and modeling tools to simulate the …
