Biopower: Foucault And Beyond, Vernon W. Cisney, Nicolae Morar Dec 2015

Biopower: Foucault And Beyond, Vernon W. Cisney, Nicolae Morar

Gettysburg College Faculty Books

Michel Foucault’s notion of “biopower” has been a highly fertile concept in recent theory, influencing thinkers worldwide across a variety of disciplines and concerns. In The History of Sexuality: An Introduction, Foucault famously employed the term to describe “a power bent on generating forces, making them grow, and ordering them, rather than one dedicated to impeding them, making them submit, or destroying them.” With this volume, Vernon W. Cisney and Nicolae Morar bring together leading contemporary scholars to explore the many theoretical possibilities that the concept of biopower has enabled while at the same time pinpointing their most important …

Specialized Replication Operons Control Rhizobial Plasmid Copy Number In Developing Symbiotic Cells, Clarice Lorraine Perry Dec 2015

Specialized Replication Operons Control Rhizobial Plasmid Copy Number In Developing Symbiotic Cells, Clarice Lorraine Perry

Theses and Dissertations

The rhizobium – legume symbiosis is a complex process that involves genetic cooperation from both bacteria and plants. Previously, our lab described naturally occurring accessory plasmids in rhizobia that inhibit this cooperation. A transposon mutagenesis was performed on the plasmids to detect the genetic factor that blocked nitrogen fixation. Several of the plasmids were found to possess a replication operon that when disrupted by transposon insertion, restored symbiotic function. This study describes an in-depth investigation into one of those plasmids, pHRC377, and into its replication operon. The operon, which we have called repA2C2, comes from the repABC family of …

Perceptions Of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (Cpted) At Australian Railway Stations, Paul Cozens, Tiffany Van Der Linde Dec 2015

Perceptions Of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (Cpted) At Australian Railway Stations, Paul Cozens, Tiffany Van Der Linde

Journal of Public Transportation

Personal safety and security are essential criteria for measuring the quality of public transport, and research has consistently demonstrated that crime and fear of crime affect levels of patronage. Although authorities throughout the world are implementing Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), research and practice commonly focus on the elements of surveillance, territoriality, and controlling access. Few studies have investigated the CPTED concepts of “image management” or “geographical juxtaposition” (the surrounding environment). This research compares and contrasts the perceptions of rail users and security experts in relation to two railway stations in Perth, Western Australia. One station was designed in …

Perceived Vs. Actual Distance To Transit In Santiago, Chile, Diego Hernández, Regina Witter Dec 2015

Perceived Vs. Actual Distance To Transit In Santiago, Chile, Diego Hernández, Regina Witter

Journal of Public Transportation

To plan public transport supply and to increase transit patronage, it is indispensable to be aware of people’s perception of the actual supply, that is, how extensive and accurate people’s knowledge is regarding the concrete features of transport supply, such as the locations of transit stops, timetables, and fare structures. This paper addresses the gap between the perceived and real distances to transit stops. The comparison between the real and perceived supply shows a considerably accurate perception. Nevertheless, a pattern is apparent. Metro supply has a higher overestimation rate than buses, i.e., walking distances are perceived as significantly shorter than …

The Search For Exomoon Radio Emissions, Joaquin P. Noyola

Physics Theses - Archive

The field of exoplanet detection has seen many new developments since the discovery of the first exoplanet. Observational surveys by the NASA Kepler Mission and several other instrument have led to the confirmation of over 1900 exoplanets, and several thousands of exoplanet potential candidates. All this progress, however, has yet to provide the first confirmed exomoon. Since all previous attempts to discover exomoons have failed, a novel method to detect them is proposed in this dissertation, which describes development of the method and its applications to select the best exomoon candidates for observational searches. The main goal of these searches …

Theoretical Prediction Of Materials For Efficient Conversion Of Solar Energy, Pranab Sarker

Physics Dissertations - Archive

Our present work represents a systematic theoretical and computational research to find an affordable material for solar energy application using density functional theory (DFT) and post-DFT such as DFT+U and DFT-HSE06. Here, we predict a new photovoltaic material (CuSnW2O8) and a new photocatalyst (ZnSnW2O8). In addition, a new method for predicting the higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) optimized growth conditions will be presented. It is well known that all physical properties are calculated once crystal structure is known. However, knowing crystal structure is extremely challenging and to date, there is no success has been claimed in the case of a …

Green Criminological Concerns & Philosophical Beliefs, Alexander Allen Anderson

Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive

The purpose of this research project was to test the philosophical argument that people who maintained a dualistic mindset or sustained a belief in the existence of the soul would be less concerned with environmental crime. A survey was collected from a sample of 332 individuals at the University of Texas at Arlington in Arlington, Texas. The survey asked individuals to select on a likert scale how concerned they were with environmental harm. Preceding these, individuals were asked to answer either yes, no, or I don’t know on questions concerning their philosophical beliefs, looking for indicators of dualistic thinking and …

We Will Not Strike: The Black Revolt In The Chicago Teachers Union, Charles Grand Dec 2015

We Will Not Strike: The Black Revolt In The Chicago Teachers Union, Charles Grand

History Theses - Archive

In the 1960s, black teachers in Chicago were systematically discriminated against by the school system’s Board of Education. The Board used a subjective oral exam to deny the vast majority of African-American educators certification. Although many uncertified black teachers taught full time at Chicago Public Schools, they were paid significantly less and were vulnerable to arbitrary transfer and termination. The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) claimed to represent uncertified teachers, but severely limited their ability to vote on contracts and in union elections. Union leaders also relegated the demands of uncertified black teachers, prioritizing the concerns of certified white teachers and …

Chapter 2 describes studies undertaken to understand the neurotoxicity of ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes (RPCs), including toxicity in mice and inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE), as previous work by Dwyer demonstrated that RPCs could be acutely toxic in mice, presumably due to …

Synthesis Of Modified Ribose Spin-Label, Ke-Wei Chang Dec 2015

Synthesis Of Modified Ribose Spin-Label, Ke-Wei Chang

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses - Archive

Transfer ribonucleic acids (tRNAs) from all organisms contain modified nucleosides, which are derived from four different nucleosides. Research has indicated that tRNA modifications affect translation and various metabolic pathways. Among these modifications, some of them need more than one enzyme to produce specific nucleosides. Researchers are interested in investigating the fundamental mechanisms and function of post-transcriptional modifying enzymes. A number of these enzymes are metal-dependent, such as MiaB and MiaE. MiaE enzyme (2-methylthio-N6-isopentenyl-adenosine(37)-tRNA monooxygenase) stereospecifically hydroxylates an adeonosine derivative at the 37th position of tRNA, ms2i6A37, to complete the hypermodification of 2-methylthio-N6-(4-hydroxyisopentenyl)-adenosine (ms2io6A37). Several studies showed that the ms2io6A37 modification …

Distributed Algorithms For Electric Vehicle Charging, Akshay Malhotra Dec 2015

Distributed Algorithms For Electric Vehicle Charging, Akshay Malhotra

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

Coordinated charging of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) can effectively mitigate the negative effects imposed on the power distribution grid by uncoordinated charging. Simultaneously, coordinated charging algorithms can accommodate the PEV user’s needs in terms of desired state-of-charge and charging time. In this work, the problem of tracking an arbitrary power profile, by coordinated charging of PEVs, is formulated as a discrete scheduling process, while accounting for the heterogeneity in charging rates and restricting the charging to only the maximum rated power. Then, a novel distributed algorithm is proposed to coordinate the PEV charging and eliminate the need for a central …

Reducing Encoder Complexity Of Intra-Mode Decision Using Cu Early Termination Algorithm, Nishit Samirbhai Samirbhai Shah Dec 2015

Reducing Encoder Complexity Of Intra-Mode Decision Using Cu Early Termination Algorithm, Nishit Samirbhai Samirbhai Shah

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

In this thesis an intra prediction algorithm is proposed that terminates complete full search prediction for the CU and is replaced by CU early termination algorithm which determines the complexity of the CU block and then decision is made to further split or non-split the CU. When the CU texture is complex the CU is split into smaller sub units to find the best size and when the CU texture is flat, the CU is not divided further into sub – units. Down sampling is done first after which complexity is calculated by which a threshold value is set. This …

Sparse Signal Reconstruction In Linear Inverse Scattering Problem, Tanmoy Bhowmik Dec 2015

Sparse Signal Reconstruction In Linear Inverse Scattering Problem, Tanmoy Bhowmik

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

Proper mathematical modeling of inverse scattering problem is of utmost importance in applications such as optical imaging and microscopy, radar, acoustic, seismic and medical imaging. However, the problem is non-linear and ill-posed due to the diffusive nature of wave propagation through the scattering medium. Born and Rytov approximation are two widely used techniques to linearize the inverse scattering problem that simplifies the mathematics and modeling of wave propagation through scattering medium in special cases. The linear inverse scattering problem is still severely ill-posed and hence, in general, the solution is not stable and unique, unless a priori knowledge about the …
