Novel Adhesive Properties Of Poly(Ethylene-Oxide) Adsorbed Nanolayers, Wenduo Zeng Dec 2015

Novel Adhesive Properties Of Poly(Ethylene-Oxide) Adsorbed Nanolayers, Wenduo Zeng

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Solid-polymer interfaces play crucial roles in the multidisciplinary field of nanotechnology and are the confluence of physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. There is now growing evidence that polymer chains irreversibly adsorb even onto weakly attractive solid surfaces, forming a nanometer-thick adsorbed polymer layer (“adsorbed polymer nanolayers†). It has also been reported that the adsorbed layers greatly impact on local structures and properties of supported polymer thin films. In this thesis, I aim to clarify adhesive and tribological properties of adsorbed poly(ethylene-oxide) (PEO) nanolayers onto silicon (Si) substrates, which remain unsolved so far. The adsorbed nanolayers were prepared by the …

Living The Past: Bergson, Proust, Deleuze And Nietzsche On Memory And The Self, Danae Mcleod Dec 2015

Living The Past: Bergson, Proust, Deleuze And Nietzsche On Memory And The Self, Danae Mcleod

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Memory is not of the past, it is of the present and it is of the future. This insight, developed by Henri Bergson in Matter and Memory is the subject of this dissertation. Focusing on the figural representations in Matter and Memory, I argue that Bergson presents a dynamic conception of memory that can be read as destabilizing fixed notions of the human subject. I closely examine the implications of Bergson’s positive account of memory, demonstrating that his account is primarily oriented toward showing how memory is useful for action in the present. I continue to develop this dynamic model …

Shadow States: The Archaeology Of Power In The Marshes Of Southern Mesopotamia, Abdulameer M. Al-Dafar Dec 2015

Shadow States: The Archaeology Of Power In The Marshes Of Southern Mesopotamia, Abdulameer M. Al-Dafar

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Ancient states and early complex societies emerged in areas where urban settlements had the resources to house large populations and where economic and political centers and institutions could be established to run the society. By contrast, marshes, isolated deserts, extreme mountain peaks and thick forests served as refuges for those who wanted to escape from the state. Moreover, taking these examples into consideration, scholars seem to share the assumption that it is unexpected to find urban centers and central political organizations of isolated refuge areas in the ancient world. This dissertation examines the hypothesis that under certain historical and environmental …

The Habits Of Racism: A Phenomenology Of The Lived Experience Of Racism And Racialised Embodiment., Helen Ngo Dec 2015

The Habits Of Racism: A Phenomenology Of The Lived Experience Of Racism And Racialised Embodiment., Helen Ngo

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation examines some of the complex questions raised by the phenomenon and experience of racism. My inquiry is twofold: First, drawing on the resources of Merleau-Ponty, I argue that the conceptual reworking of habit as bodily orientation helps us to identify the more subtle but fundamental workings of racism, to catch its insidious, gestural expressions, as well as its habitual modes of racialised perception. Racism, on this account, is equally expressed through bodily habits, and this in turn raises important ethical questions regarding the responsibility for one's racist habits; as its etymology suggests, habits are not merely passive sedimentations, …

Age Differences In Loneliness: Neural Correlates, Neurogenetics And Functional Connectivity, Alexandra D'Agostino Dec 2015

Age Differences In Loneliness: Neural Correlates, Neurogenetics And Functional Connectivity, Alexandra D'Agostino

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Loneliness, defined as the subjective experience of social isolation, has been linked to poor health outcomes (e.g. depression, cardiovascular disease) and is prevalent among older adult populations. To improve upon current treatments, the interaction between genetic and environmental risk factors for loneliness and their effect on the brain must be better understood. The present study investigated the brain basis of loneliness in younger (mean age = 20.4) and older adults (mean age = 62.9). We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and an emotional picture task to address this question. fMRI data were collected on a 3T Siemens Trio Scanner, …

Discourses On Time In The European Avant-Garde, Aaron Allen Hayes Dec 2015

Discourses On Time In The European Avant-Garde, Aaron Allen Hayes

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In the 1950s and 1960s, European composers, especially those interested in the development of serialism and electronic music, framed many of their aesthetic and compositional challenges as problems of time. This dissertation examines the writings and music of five notable composers from this era, and reconstructs the philosophical discourses that implicitly and explicitly provide the intellectual horizons for these temporal problems. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Karel Goeyvaerts, Pierre Boulez and Jean Barraqué attended the seminar offered by Olivier Messiaen at the Conservatoire National Supérior de Musique de Paris. With the exception of Barraqué, these composers …

Efficient Numerical Algorithms For Heterogeneous Computation Of Pde Extended Systems With Applications, Yiyang Yang Dec 2015

Efficient Numerical Algorithms For Heterogeneous Computation Of Pde Extended Systems With Applications, Yiyang Yang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) and corresponding numerical schemes are explored to simulate scientific and engineering problems including parachute simulation and American option pricing. These problems involve appropriate coupling of several equations systems. A revised spring-mass model is used to describe the motion of parachute canopy and string motion which considers both string stiffness and angular stiffness. This model is validated by the material's Young's modulus and Poisson ratio and is proved to be convergent to continuum mechanics. The Navier-Stokes equation is applied to simulate the fluid field and a second-order accurate numerical scheme is used, together with the introduction of …

Utilization Of Energy Analytics To Reduce Energy Waste In The Manufacturing Environment, Michael P. Brundage Dec 2015

Utilization Of Energy Analytics To Reduce Energy Waste In The Manufacturing Environment, Michael P. Brundage

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Current manufacturing facilities lack proper performance indicators that can accurately pinpoint areas of energy inefficiency on the manufacturing line. In studying the production dynamics, it is realized that not every disruption event causes permanent production loss for the manufacturing line. Each downtime event is categorized as non-effective (not causing permanent production loss) and effective (causing permanent production loss). This directly leads to the concept of the opportunity window, which is the largest amount of time a machine can be turned off without causing the slowest machine to become blocked or starved. The recovery time is also analyzed, which is the …

The Merchant Of Venice: Portia As The Embodiment Of Queen Elizabeth I, Weijian Wang Dec 2015

The Merchant Of Venice: Portia As The Embodiment Of Queen Elizabeth I, Weijian Wang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

With the large amount of research of William Shakespeare, scholars tend to look at Shakespeare as a noble literary figure who wrote the best English poems and plays ever. They, however, may lose a comprehensive understanding of the motivation for some of his best works by not considering his other social roles, such as businessman, shareholder, etc. So when we talk about The Merchant of Venice, there are always elusive questions about the main characters in the play. One question is about how Shakespeare made the audience, especially after the twentieth century, feel pity for Shylock who might have been …

Food Sharing During The Transition To Agriculture At Neolithic Çatalhöyük, Central Anatolia | Food Sharing During The Transition To Agriculture At Neolithic ÇAtalhã¶Yã¼K, Central Anatolia, G. Arzu Demirergi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

All human societies share food. Investigation of food sharing in a society can provide great insights into social relations. Food sharing practices have been anthropologically explored in many cultures, especially in small scale societies such as hunter-gatherers and subsistence agriculturalists. According to the findings of these studies, it can be generalized that hunter gatherers tend to share food relatively widely and often beyond the kin level, while agriculturalists tend to share more restrictedly and often within the household. Although this general statement sheds light on how food is shared in different subsistence systems, it does not provide information on how …

Structure Determination, Enzymatic Characterization, And Inhibitor Discovery Of Select Protein Targets Of Bacterial Pathogens, Brian Edward Mcgillick Dec 2015

Structure Determination, Enzymatic Characterization, And Inhibitor Discovery Of Select Protein Targets Of Bacterial Pathogens, Brian Edward Mcgillick

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Our interests are in using structure based drug design to target bacterial agents and toxins that have the potential for intentional release into the environment and therefore pose a severe threat to public health and safety. Specifically, we focus on the pathogenic bacteria Francisella tularensis and Yersinia pestis, as well as the Clostridium botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs). Our strategy for F. tularensis and Y. pestis was to target the bacterial system for fatty acid biosynthesis (FAS-II). The FAS-II system contains several enzymes whose sequence and structure is highly conserved across a vast array of pathogens. This coupled with the low homology …

Primary Cilia Discriminate Benign Atypical Nevi From Thin Melanoma, Elizabeth R. Snedecor Dec 2015

Primary Cilia Discriminate Benign Atypical Nevi From Thin Melanoma, Elizabeth R. Snedecor

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Melanoma accounts for an overwhelming majority of mortality and morbidity from skin neoplasms. The aggressiveness of melanoma necessitates accurate and efficient diagnosis, which currently relies on analysis of histological samples by dermatopathologists as the gold standard. However, this gold standard allows for many uncertain diagnoses along with increased morbidity and even mortality. Recently, studies of primary cilia have shown their expression to be reduced in cutaneous malignancies, including melanoma. In a previous study, PC expression was markedly decreased in unambiguous lesions of melanoma compared to benign nevi, independent of other cell cycle variables. More recently it was demonstrated that the …

An Investigation Of Epidermolysis Bullosa And An Analysis Of Research And Treatment, Anna Dowling Dec 2015

An Investigation Of Epidermolysis Bullosa And An Analysis Of Research And Treatment, Anna Dowling

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The dysfunction of genes encoding integral proteins of the extracellular matrix and the basement membrane zone create foundations for the disease epidermolysis bullosa. Various proteins reside in the basement membrane zone and are responsible for the strength of the epidermal tissue. The cure for this disease is elusive which poses a problem for modern medicine. In this analysis, the mechanisms of epidermolysis bullosa subtypes were investigated and the viability of future treatment protocols was assessed. The promising treatment options include stem cell, gene, fibroblast, and protein therapy. Strategies need to be investigated further in order to develop therapeutic cures which …

Investigations Of Silver Vanadium Oxide And Silver Vanadium Phosphorous Oxide Solubility: Impact On Battery Performance, David Charles Bock Dec 2015

Investigations Of Silver Vanadium Oxide And Silver Vanadium Phosphorous Oxide Solubility: Impact On Battery Performance, David Charles Bock

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Extended battery lifetime has increased impact with the prospect of long life applications such as electric vehicles and the integration of energy storage into the electric grid. Thus, consideration of parasitic reactions that occur over long periods of time has elevated significance. One such life limiting reaction for several battery systems is the dissolution of the cathode material into the battery electrolyte. This research investigates cathode solubility in the battery system used to power implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs). The benchmark lithium/silver vanadium oxide (Ag2V4O11, SVO) system used in these devices has an unpredictable long term stability limitation attributed to cathode …

Interacting With Gigapixel Displays, Charilaos Papadopoulos

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Large, high-resolution displays (LHiRDs) are a powerful visualization and data exploration tool. These facilities, with resolutions in the hundreds of millions of pixels, have proliferated in industry and research laboratories, enabling scientists, engineers or physicians to better understand the problems that they face. Recently, the Reality Deck pushed LHiRDs past the gigapixel resolution barrier, offering 1.5 gigapixels and providing a 360 degree horizontal field of view, within a large workspace of 33′ × 19′. Room-sized facilities such as the Reality Deck simultaneously promote and demand physical navigation on behalf of the user. Consequently, static user interfaces (e.g. | keyboard and …

Minimally Disruptive Management Frameworks For Network Functions, Zafar Ayyub Qazi Dec 2015

Minimally Disruptive Management Frameworks For Network Functions, Zafar Ayyub Qazi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Networks today rely on network functions or middleboxes (e.g. | firewalls, WAN optimizers) to provide critical performance, security, and policy compliance capabilities. However, today the management of these middleboxes is hard. First, these middleboxes are implemented as dedicated hardware appliances, making it difficult to dynamically scale resources. Second, operators need to carefully plan the network topology, manually set up rules to route traffic through the desired sequence of middleboxes, and implement safeguards for correct operation in the presence of failures and overload. We can overhaul today’s network infrastructure to address these problems by introducing flexibility in routing and the implementation …

Distributed Energy Resources And Dynamic Microgrid: An Integrated Assessment, Duo Shang Dec 2015

Distributed Energy Resources And Dynamic Microgrid: An Integrated Assessment, Duo Shang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The overall goal of this thesis is to improve understanding in terms of the benefit of DERs to both utility and to electricity end-users when integrated in power distribution system. To achieve this goal, a series of two studies was conducted to assess the value of DERs when integrated with new power paradigms. First, the arbitrage value of DERs was examined in markets with time-variant electricity pricing rates (e.g. | time of use, real time pricing) under a smart grid distribution paradigm. This study uses a stochastic optimization model to estimate the potential profit from electricity price arbitrage over a …

Mobilization Lessons From Marcus Garvey And The Universal Negro Improvement Association, Kenneth Andrew Pierce Dec 2015

Mobilization Lessons From Marcus Garvey And The Universal Negro Improvement Association, Kenneth Andrew Pierce

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This study of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) explains the mobilization successes and failures of a major social movement organization and its leader, Marcus Garvey. The UNIA succeeded in mobilizing millions of Blacks; prior to the UNIA, Black Americans had not developed an organization that produced this level of mobilization. By 1920, Garvey was regarded by both critics and supporters as one of the most important leaders of the African diaspora. This research focuses on the roles of the UNIA’s organizational structure and the Black church in explaining why the UNIA was first highly successful and later collapsed. This …

Deciding What Counts As Persecution: An Analysis Of Gender And Sexual Orientation Asylum Cases In The United States, Cheryl Llewellyn Dec 2015

Deciding What Counts As Persecution: An Analysis Of Gender And Sexual Orientation Asylum Cases In The United States, Cheryl Llewellyn

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In the United States, individuals may apply for asylum if they have a “well-founded†fear of persecution in their country of origin based on one of five enumerated grounds: race, religion, national origin, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the U.S. saw an influx of women and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) applicants. While gender and sexual orientation are not specified in the refugee definition, these applicants contended that their persecution could be attributed to their membership in a particular social group. In response to the growing number of …

Through the use of photography and digital media processes, my art practice explores themes relating to identity, the consciousness of self, home, environment and personal relationships. These themes are explored via an observational approach (external), or, via personal experience (internal); each approach highlighting psychological processes, the vulnerability of self and the commonality of human experience and behavior. In my most recent work, I am using a combination of photography and video, site-specific installation and mixed media applications. Areas of research I am interested in and actively utilize in my work include relational and environmental psychology, cognitive aesthetics, visual communication and …

Using Plant Traits To Predict Denitrification In Wetland Ecosystems, Mary Katherine Alldred Dec 2015

Using Plant Traits To Predict Denitrification In Wetland Ecosystems, Mary Katherine Alldred

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Understanding how changes in ecological communities affect ecosystem function, including the provisioning of ecosystem services, is a critical challenge in the field of ecology. I apply a trait-based approach to link the characteristics of plant communities to their effects on denitrification and nitrogen-removal ecosystem services. My work has addressed this challenge at multiple scales using literature syntheses, field surveys, field manipulations, and greenhouse experiments. In a meta-analysis of 419 published measurements of denitrification, I estimated that vegetation on average increases the ability of marshes to remove nitrogen by 55% and that this effect differs among species. My study was the …

Essays On Patent Licensing, Bruno Dutra Badia Dec 2015

Essays On Patent Licensing, Bruno Dutra Badia

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation consists of three essays dealing with issues related to patent licensing from a game-theoretic perspective. In the first essay, Chapter 2, the problem facing an inventor who holds the patent of a technology that can potentially be used to reduce the costs of firms in a given industry is considered. The technology's ability to cut firms' costs depends on a use for it being discovered, and the inventor has the option of trying or not to discover the use before licensing the technology to the firms. In this context, two main questions are addressed. First, which alternative should …

Two Essays On Actuarial And Financial Econometrics, Kwadwo Asamoah Dec 2015

Two Essays On Actuarial And Financial Econometrics, Kwadwo Asamoah

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In chapter 1, we analyze the concept of credibility in two generalized count models: Mittag Leffler and Weibull count models which can handle both underdispersion and overdispersion in count data and nest the commonly used Poisson model as a special case. A correct specification of the model for determining individual risk premium is important since without a proper pricing mechanism one is simply not competitive in the insurance industry. We find evidence using data from Danish Insurance Company that the simple Poisson model can set the credibility weight to one as a result of large heterogeneity among policyholders and thus, …

Essays On Durable Good Market With Quality Choice, Shino Komatsudani Dec 2015

Essays On Durable Good Market With Quality Choice, Shino Komatsudani

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation constructs a model of durable-goods oligopoly and monopoly in which quality choice is allowed and analyzes the equilibrium behavior of the firms and consumers. The second chapter considers the case of multiple firms and continuum of consumers whose types are uniformly distributed in infinite horizon setting and shows that there exists an equilibrium where higher-quality good is not offered before certain period even though firms are capable of producing them. The first section of the third chapter analyzes the market which consists of a monopolist who faces a single consumer that has two possible types and shows that …

The Secret Bank Settlement: Who Was Guilty And Who Was Not?, E Yang Dec 2015

The Secret Bank Settlement: Who Was Guilty And Who Was Not?, E Yang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Since the subprime mortgage crisis, many banks agreed to pay huge sums to settle the government's accusations that they sold flawed mortgage securities in the 2008 crisis. The Bank of America, JP Morgan, Citi, Wells Fargo, and many other banks have paid a total of more than $130 billion for claims that they intentionally misled investors or were guilty of financial wrongdoing. Is there evidence to support this position and is it fair to assign equal blame to all the big banks? Here, we estimate the expected default rate based on loan characteristics reported by big banks and compare with …
