Development, Testing And Characterization Of Electronic Skins For Robots, Ritvij Sahasrabuddhe
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
The main purpose of this thesis is to test and characterize newly developed pressure sensors integrated into robot skin and understand their behavior for different testing parameters such as sensor and skin materials and geometry. Flexible electronic skin is meant to behave similar to human skin acting as a tactile interface with the robot environment. Before placing electronic skin onto robots, it is important to test and characterize such structures. Since the behavior of our pressure sensors embedded in robot skin was still unknown, an experimental setup has been developed in order to test and characterize the sensors and collect …

It challenges the state-of-the-art H.264/AVC [3] Video Coding standard which is in current use in the industry by being able to reduce the bit rate by 50% and retaining the same video quality. It came into existence in the early 2012 although Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC) was formed in January 2001 to carry out developments on HEVC, and ever since then a huge range of development has been going on. On 13 April 2013 [11], HEVC standard also called H.265 was approved by ITU-T, Joint …
Intoxication And Empire: Distilled Spirits And The Creation Of Addiction In The Early Modern British Atlantic, Kristen D. Burton
Intoxication And Empire: Distilled Spirits And The Creation Of Addiction In The Early Modern British Atlantic, Kristen D. Burton
History Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation exams how the spread of imperialism in the British Atlantic led to the mass production and consumption of distilled spirits during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Through transatlantic colonization, distilled liquors, once produced as medicinal remedies, developed into a thriving industry by the beginning of the eighteenth century. This change in the purpose and use of distilled spirits prompted political, religious, and medical leaders to ask new questions about the effects and possible threats of consuming such spirits. This dissertation is a study of perceptions; it examines how spirits became the means through which people evaluated the place …

This dissertation explores how Quaker humanitarians in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries actively absorbed and employed emerging Enlightenment discourses about “disability” and human dependency as a means to build support for, fund, and market their reform activities. Beginning in the eighteenth century in their abolitionist advocacy, Quakers harnessed Enlightenment rhetoric about disability and public displays of aberrant bodies and minds in order to raise attention to the plight of various marginalized groups and also to raise funds to support these causes. This emerging concept of disability, which was very individualized, cohered nicely with Quakers’ central theological tenet of the “Inner …

Two Phase Flow Cfd Analysis Of Refrigerants In A Condenser Pipe For Prediction Of Pressure Drop And Pumping Power, Aniket Ramchandra Kalambe
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
With the ever growing need of achieving optimum cooling at chip level at the expense of low input pumping power and keeping in check the Global Warming Potential (GWP) & Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) has given rise to “two-phase on chip cooling” with nature friendly refrigerants. Currently, “air-cooling” and “single-phase water on-chip cooling” using copper micro-channel coolers are being used but “two-phase on chip cooling” with refrigerants have a very large scale & long lasting advantages over the prior. However, due to the perceived complexity of modelling two-phase flow, this solution is not yet well understood. Modelling of two phase …

An Invastigation Of Band-Limited Fluid Damper Configuration Using Lumped Parameter Modeling, Ye Hong
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Vehicle suspension system is one of the key factors related to the vehicle dynamic characteristic. The fine tuning of suspension system between vehicle handling and ride comfort is not only a trade-off between these two aspects, but also, has its impact on vehicle safety and durability. For an optimal damper performance, the damper needs to generate sufficient damping force at maneuvering frequency (< 2 Hz); and it also needs to generate less damping force, which allow spring to filter the high frequency noise (> 2 Hz) generated by vehicle travels along rough road condition at speed. In order to achieve such performance, a lumped parameter model of Band-Limited Damper is proposed. Frequency response of both Conventional Damper and Band-Limited Damper are …

Modern Information Technology (IT) equipment are typically assumed to operate in quiescent airflow conditions in an uncontained data center facility. In this study, the multi-scaled thermal management strategies are reconsidered at the IT chassis and rack level for a containment system. For an ideal containment configuration of airflow provisioning the entirety of conditioned air provided by the Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) unit would flow through the IT equipment and return back to the CRAC. But in actuality a lack of interfaced airflow distribution exists between the amount of conditioned air provisioned to the rack and the volume capacity ingested …

A Model Analysis Of Sand Insertion In Hydraulic Fractures, Ya Hao
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) is a well-stimulation technology to create large volume of fracture formation in rocks for gas and/or oil extraction. This technology has been applied to commercially exploit natural gas in unconventional shale reservoirs that contain immense quantity but low density of hydrocarbon sources. The productivity can be largely dependent on the connectivity of fractures that must stay open. However, upon initial hydraulic fracturing, the fractures would be closed due to high hydrostatic pressure deep inside the crust. Sand must be pumped into the fractures to keep them open. An in-depth understanding of the sand distribution and its dependence …
Magnetic Field Enhanced Thermal Conductivity Analysis Of Magnetic Nanofluids, Christopher Allen
Magnetic Field Enhanced Thermal Conductivity Analysis Of Magnetic Nanofluids, Christopher Allen
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
The magnetic properties of four water-based nanofluids consisting of Al2O3, CuO, Fe3O4, and SiO2 were exploited to analyze the effect of the application of an external magnetic field on the thermal conductivity of the nanofluid. When the magnetic field is applied, the magnetic dipole moments of the particles align and the particles come in contact with each other and form chains in the direction of the applied magnetic field. When parallel to the direction of heat flow, the magnetic field causes the effective thermal conductivity in the direction of the magnetic field to increase. A higher thermally conductive fluid can …

Influencing Donor Decision-Making: An Examination Of Situational Determinants That Impact Donation, Floyd Kristopher
Marketing Dissertations - Archive
Research around donor decision-making has shown the importance of understanding why donors make decisions. However, much less research exists explaining how donors make decisions. Set against the backdrop of online websites and in the context of donation, this dissertation examines how web characteristics, as situational determinants, influence donor decisions. Situational determinants are influences that arise because of a specific situation where a consumer is using the product or brand; these are instances that extend beyond the basic tendencies or traits of the consumer (Belk 1974). This could be a behavioral setting, a space, or a time (Belk 1974); other situational …

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
The aim of this research is to investigate a highly sensitive, fast, inexpensive, and field-applicable amplification-free nanoparticle-based oligonucleotide detection method which does not rely on any enzymatic or signal amplification process. In this approach, target oligonucleotide strands are detected through the formation of nanoparticle satellites which make an electrical path between two electrodes. This method enables an extremely sensitive oligonucleotide detection because even a few oligonucleotide strands can form a single nanoparticle satellite which can solely generates an electrical output signal. Results showed that this oligonucleotide detection method can detect oligonucleotide single strands at concentrations as low as 50 femtomolar …

Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD) is a childhood hip disorder resulting from the loss of blood flow to the femoral head. In severe cases of the disease, the femoral head can develop a flattening deformity; additionally, if the disease is diagnosed at a later stage, it leaves most patients to develop early osteoarthritis of the hip. Due to a lack of pathological specimen from patients, an experimental piglet model of femoral head ischemia was developed. The model closely follows the radiographic changes seen in LCPD patients, where there is subchondral fracture, resorption, and a flattening deformity of the femoral head. After ischemia, …

Merging Radar-Only Qpe And Rain Gauge Data Via Conditional Bias-Penalized Optimal Estimation, Beomgeun Kim
Merging Radar-Only Qpe And Rain Gauge Data Via Conditional Bias-Penalized Optimal Estimation, Beomgeun Kim
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
A new technique for merging radar precipitation estimates and rain gauge data is developed and evaluated to improve multisensor quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE). Various types of linear and nonlinear techniques have been used to combine rain gauge and radar data. Linear cokriging and its variants, for example, may be considered as the best linear unbiased estimators which minimize the error variance in the unconditional sense. They are, however, subject to conditional biases (CB) that may be unacceptably large for estimation of heavy-to-extreme precipitation. In this work, I develop, apply, and evaluate conditional bias-penalized cokriging (CBPCK) for spatial estimation of precipitation …

Most literature is analyzed through various lenses, or more accurately, schools of thought informed by life experience and cultural knowledge. Literature created in American Sign is no different than any other literature in spite of it being a visual-spatial language rather than a sound-based language. It requires scholars able to access the Deaf Lens, cognizant of the linguistic and historical context that informed Deaf artists in the creation of their work. This context is embedded in their ASL literature, and often requires scholars to approach their work as the product of a colonized group. Though the Deaf Community does not …

Becomes A Woman Best: Female Prophetic Figures In Shakespeare's Plays, Alan Morris Cochrum
English Theses - Archive
This dissertation argues that female characters in Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale, Henry VIII, Richard III, Macbeth, and 1 Henry VI function as prophets in the style of the Old Testament. In a culture that venerates Holy Writ but also devalues women, a dramatic exemplar wrapped in the mantle of a biblical prophet becomes a potential model for playgoers as well as an embodied critique. Paulina, Katherine of Aragon, and Margaret of Anjou condemn injustice, uphold the cause of the vulnerable, challenge the abuse of royal and spiritual authority, and frequently echo aspects of biblical figures such as Moses, Isaiah, and …

Predicting Outcomes In Investment Treaty Arbitration, Susan Franck
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
Crafting appropriate dispute settlement processes is challenging for any conflict-management system, particularly for politically sensitive international economic law disputes. As the United States negotiates investment treaties with Asian and European countries, the terms of dispute settlement have become contentious. There is a vigorous debate about whether investment treaty arbitration (ITA) is an appropriate dispute settlement mechanism. While some sing the praises of ITA, others offer a spirited critique. Some critics claim that ITA is biased against states, while others suggest ITA is predictable but unfair due to factors like arbitrator identity or venue. Using data from 159 final cases derived …
