Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Therapy and support programs for siblings of youth with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are on the rise, indicating a growing demand for specialized sibling services. However, current research findings remain unclear as to what exactly the needs of siblings might be and why those needs might be present. The current dissertation aims to identify what particular risk factors may lead to problematic outcomes that warrant clinical services (e.g. | emotional, behavioral, or social problems), while concurrently, examining resilience factors that may lead to positive functioning in these areas. A comprehensive family systems model was created drawing from literature related to …

Scalable End-To-End Data I/O Over Enterprise And Data-Center Networks, Yufei Ren

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Data-intensive applications in commercial cloud and scientific computing demand ultra-high-speed end-to-end data access capability between data storage and computing locations. Meanwhile, advancements in hardware systems continuously change the landscape of data centers’ core capabilities, i.e. | computing, networking, and storage. The two trends expose new research and development challenges and opportunities to bring the bare-metal capacity and performance of state-of-the-art hardware to the rising needs for high performance by applications. Simply deploying and tuning existing software and services on state-of-the-art platforms does not necessarily ensure expected performance due to the overhead on data-copy in OS kernel functions and conservative network …

Fused Convolutional Neural Network Accelerators, Manoj Alwani

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are rapidly becoming the domi-nant approach to computer vision and a major component of many other pervasivemachine learning tasks, such as speech recognition, natural language processing, and fraud detection. As research and development of CNNs progresses, the size ofthe networks grows, leading to large increases in the computation and bandwidthrequired to evaluate these networks. Typical CNNs in use today already exceedthe capabilities of general-purpose CPUs, resulting in rapid adoption and activeresearch of CNN hardware accelerators such as GPUs, FPGAs, and ASICs. Inthis work, we develop a novel CNN accelerator architecture and design method-ology that breaks away …

Contention And Control: Violent Protest Policing In Democratic Argentina, Fernanda R. Page Poma

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Beginning in 1990s, Latin American countries have witnessed a dramatic emergence in collective action by unemployed and informal workers. Yet, the rise in mobilizations was coupled with a depiction of protests as violent and dangerous by authorities and the media and was followed by high levels of police violence, control, and imprisonment of protesters. Furthermore, according to human rights groups, police were more violent and repressive at protest by marginal groups. Drawing on an original database of newspaper reports on contentious collective action events from 1997 to 2007 and qualitative data, this research looks at the case of Argentina to …

A Financial Analysis Of Buffalo Charter Schools: Are Charter Schools Getting Their Fair Share Of Public Funds?, Kimberly R. German

Public Administration Master’s Projects

The charter school movement has existed for approximately 20 years and just under that in New York State. Charter schools are privately-managed public schools. As the quantity of charter schools and the students attending them increase in the city of Buffalo so too does the amount of taxpayer dollars directed to them. Charter schools receive tuition payments from local school districts for students from those districts attending their school. The payments are public funds, the amounts of which are derived from a funding formula created by the state and paid by the local school district. Charter schools argue there is …

The Effect Of Commercial Development Types On Property Tax Revenue: A Case Study Of Commercial Property In North Buffalo, New York, Jordan P. Then

Public Administration Master’s Projects

Municipalities largely rely upon property taxes to fund their operations. They also have a great deal of control over the types of developments permitted within their jurisdiction. Different development types have different levels of value and it is important that municipalities understand the relative values of each development type in order to make an informed decision as to what they should permit to be built within their jurisdiction. This study tests the theory that urban/new-urbanist type developments are more valuable than suburban types and thus provide greater property tax revenues to the municipality by comparing various commercial building development types …

Carbonic Springs As Distal Manifestations Of The Jemez Geothermal System, San Ysidro, New Mexico, Highlighting The Importance Of Fault Pathways And Hydrochemical Mixing., Christopher Mcgibbon

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Input of deeply sourced (endogenic) waters can contribute significant quantities of salinity to groundwater, degrading water quality, with faults acting as conduits for subsurface fluid flow. Understanding the source, movement, and chemistry of groundwater is becoming ever more significant with changing climate and weather patterns. Systematic sampling was carried out on three groups of carbonic warm and hot springs in New Mexico, USA: 1) Tierra Amarilla springs (~ 20ºC), near San Ysidro south of Nacimiento Mountains, 2) Penasco springs (~ 20 ºC) along the Nacimiento fault west of the Nacimiento basement mountain block, and 3) Soda Dam, Jemez, and Indian …

Hunting And The Second Amendment, Joseph Blocher Dec 2015

Hunting And The Second Amendment, Joseph Blocher

Notre Dame Law Review

Debates about the meaning and scope of the Second Amendment have traditionally focused on whether it protects the keeping and bearing of arms for self-defense, prevention of tyranny, maintenance of the militia, or some combination of those three things. But roughly half of American gun-owners identify hunting or sport shooting as their primary reason for owning a gun. And while much public rhetoric suggests that these activities fall within the scope of the Second Amendment, some of the most committed gun-rights advocates insist that the Amendment “ain’t about hunting” and that, no matter their heritage and value, such activities are …

Jacobean Textile Design: Surviving (And Thriving) Through The Test Of Time, Janis L. Wild Dec 2015

Jacobean Textile Design: Surviving (And Thriving) Through The Test Of Time, Janis L. Wild

Senior Theses

Jacobean textile design sprang from the Tree of Life motif, an ancient design that carried religious symbolism for many early cultures. It represented a greater power and as such could provide protection and even fertility.

When trade routes opened up between the East and West in the early 17th century, Europeans were eager for items made in the East and in particular for textiles from India embellished with The Tree of Life. This increase in trade provided a booming time for commerce.

During the reign of James I in the early 1600’s, the English designers added their own creative …

The Transformative And Healing Powers Of Compassion, Forgiveness, And Wonder, Anna C. Eriksson-Marty Dec 2015

The Transformative And Healing Powers Of Compassion, Forgiveness, And Wonder, Anna C. Eriksson-Marty

Senior Theses

Since time immemorial, humankind has struggled to coexist peacefully together. As human beings, we strive on our relationships with each other and, yet, with actions of hatred and prejudice, we seem to consistently destroy those very relationships we value so deeply. Our current society is plagued by fear, which seems to run more rampant now – more than ever – with assistance of our rapidly evolving communication technology. The question must be asked, “How can we end this madness and heal ourselves into a kinder and more fulfilling future?” By providing up-to-date scientific research on the human emotions of compassion, …

Determinants Of Seat Belt Use: Regression Analysis With Fars Data Corrected For Self-Selection, Frank Goetzke, Samia Islam Dec 2015

Determinants Of Seat Belt Use: Regression Analysis With Fars Data Corrected For Self-Selection, Frank Goetzke, Samia Islam

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We develop a methodology to use FARS data as an alternative to NOPUS in estimating seat belt usage. The advantages of using FARS over NOPUS are that (i) FARS is broader because it contains more variables relevant for policy analysis, (ii) FARS allows for easy multivariate regression analysis, and, finally, (iii) FARS data is more cost-effective. Methodology: We apply a binary logit model in our analysis to determine the likelihood of seat belt usage given various occupant, vehicle, and built environment characteristics. Using FARS data, we derive coefficient estimates for categories such as vehicle occupants' age and night time …

Wind Power Growing Pains, K.K. Duvivier Dec 2015

Wind Power Growing Pains, K.K. Duvivier

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

The United States loves wind power. Since 2004 alone, U.S. wind capacity has multiplied almost ten times — from about 6.7 gigawatts in 2004 to over 65.9 gigawatts by 2014. This growth in generation potential has been accompanied by a growth in the size of the turbines that deliver that power — from approximately 56 feet in the 1980s to over 300 feet in 2015. As the turbines and meterological or met towers push up into non-surface atmospheric weather layers and navigable airspace over 200 feet, new wake efficiency and competing legal concerns arise.

Wiyot, Wiki And Batawat People, Susie Van Kirk

Susie Van Kirk Papers

In June 1900, Stewart Culin (1858-1929), self-educated anthropologist/ethnographer, traveled to northwestern California on a colleting trip. He was then Director of the University of Pennsylvania’s Museum of Archaeology and Paleontology, and the purpose of his trip to was to secure “a number of Indian curios and relics,” which he did, spending about $150 in Hoopa. He also secured curios from the Mad River Indians near Blue Lake (Blue Lake Advocate 23 June 1900).

Just what Culin collected is unclear, other than the baskets, probably all of which were either Hupa or Yurok, and possibly some Karuk. The tribal heritage of …

Du Témoin Et De L’Humain Chez Gilbert Gatore : Le Passé Devant Soi, Jean-Pierre Karegeye

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This article revisits Gatore’s novel, The past ahead, in analyzing the idea of witnessing. Some critics estimate that the novel does not make a clear distinction between the perpetrator and the victim. While recognizing the danger, the article extends the debate on the notion of the human beyond the categories of “perpetrator” and “victim”. Without excusing acts of the former, the author of this article affirms that the perpetrator and the victim belong to the same humanity. While they remain extreme and inexcusable, crime against humanity and genocides are not a contingent acts, which opens a meditation on the fragility …
