History Of Enlisted Women In The Air National Guard: 1968-2012, Roy Dean Dowdy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation examines the history and role of Enlisted Women in the Air National Guard, 1968-2012. By examining this previously undocumented agency of women's history, I clarify the political and cultural dynamics that directly factored into the accession of women as enlisted members of the Air National Guard. This dissertation includes a brief look at some of the major highlights of women throughout history from around the world who took up arms during periods of conflict to defend their homes and families. The background and demise of the draft that led to the development of the All-Volunteer Force which today …

Refugees, Migrants, And Terrorists: German National Identity And The Social Construction Of Vietnamese And Mediterranean Boat People, Yves Mai Orsino

Since the eruption of the Mediterranean crisis, European states have taken a tougher stance on admitting refugees and asylum seekers despite the fact that Europe is the original architect of the international humanitarian regime. This shift from a historically Open Europe to the Fortress Europe is particularly pronounced in Germany. Accordingly, this thesis explores why Germany has suggested more restrictive policies toward the Mediterranean refugees today when it had responded generously during the Indochinese crisis. I argue that Germany's differential responses to the Indochinese and Mediterranean refugee crises reflect its construction of the foreign groups as either assets or liabilities …

Examining The Impact Of School Wide Positive Behavior Support On Teacher Self-Efficacy In Rural Middle Schools, Elizabeth Ann Stratton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The present study examines the effect of the implementation of School Wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS) on teacher self-efficacy in rural middle school. This quantitative study used the Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES) and the Effective Behavior Support (EBS) survey to acquire results on individual teacher self-efficacy and the implementation of SWPBS in two Title I rural middle schools in the rural South. Middle School A, alias, Andreas Middle school had implemented SWPBS for three years, while Middle School B, alias, Beechnut Middle School had no formal implementation of SWPBS. The TSES and the EBS surveys were administered to …
Improved Value For Load Increase Factor In Progressive Collapse, Yousef Ghaffari
Improved Value For Load Increase Factor In Progressive Collapse, Yousef Ghaffari
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Progressive collapse is a situation when one or more key structural elements fail resulting in the failure of adjoining structural elements and, in return, leading to partial or total collapse of the entire building. One method of reducing the likelihood of a progressive collapse situation is to have structures designed with high redundancy so that a higher level of force distribution can take place after the failure of key structural elements. For an accurate evaluation of the structural behavior in a progressive collapse scenario, a nonlinear dynamic analysis (NDA) that considers the geometric and material nonlinearity should be conducted. The …
The Relationship Between Participation In Athletics And Academic Performance Of Male African American High School Students, Angela Lynnette Hargrave
The Relationship Between Participation In Athletics And Academic Performance Of Male African American High School Students, Angela Lynnette Hargrave
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
A dramatic gap in the academic achievement of African American males and the academic achievement of Caucasian males across this country continues to exist. African American males fail to complete high school at an increasingly high rate or are ill-prepared for postsecondary education upon completion of high school. The disengagement of African American males in schools has been associated with the continuance of this achievement gap. The influence on academic performance that participating in high school athletics had on African American male students who participated in an athletic program as compared to African American male students who did not engaged …
Giuseppe Verdi 'S Messa Da Requiem: Issues For Conductors In Performance Practice, Hankuy Lim
Giuseppe Verdi 'S Messa Da Requiem: Issues For Conductors In Performance Practice, Hankuy Lim
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation studies and examines various facets that a conductor must consider when rehearsing and performing Giuseppe Verdi’s Messa da Requiem. This dissertation may aid a conductor in making knowledgeable decisions by observing the conductor’s interpretation versus the compositional intent in the tempo of the piece, the treatment, suggested rehearsal practice techniques, and performance considerations of the vocal and orchestral parts and their own associated issues. Several conductors’ and orchestras’ recordings and arrangements of the Requiem were analyzed in order to establish the best practices and choices regarding tempo selections and spans. Several of the conductors that were studied for …

Nursing Bedside Swallow Screen: How It Affects Outcome Of Stroke Patients, Honoree Ceballos
All Publications
The assessment of a stroke patient’s ability to swallow plays an important role in the management, recovery and patient outcome in stroke. Nurses in the Neuroscience unit encounter this situation daily in caring for stroke patients. This nursing assessment is integral in providing adequate nursing care to prevent complications such as aspiration pneumonia.

Inactivation Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 And Shiga Toxin Producing E. Coli (Stec) Throughout Beef Summer Sausage Production And The Use Of High Pressure Processing As An Alternative Intervention To Thermal Processing, Eric L. Oliver
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Escherichia coli O157:H7 and six additional serogroups of Shiga Toxin-producing E. coli (STEC-7) have been implicated in foodborne illness outbreaks related to fermented sausage products and are considered adulterants by the USDA-FSIS. The objective of this study was to evaluate high pressure processing (HPP) as an alternative to thermal treatment to reduce STEC-7 meeting the USDA-FSIS performance standards (5.0-log reduction). A rifampicin-resistant, non-pathogenic E. coli (surrogate) cocktail, was used in manufacturing testing. Sausages were fermented at ~42.2°C, slowly increased to 54.4°C internal temperature, cold showered, and chilled for 6 hours. Sampling occurred post-fermentation (PF; pH 5.0), internal temperature 48.9°C (I-48.9°C), …

Novel Time Domain Integral Equation Method Hybridized With The Macromodels Of Circuits, Huan Huan Zhang, He Ming Yao, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This work presents a novel transient field-circuit simulation method based on the time-domain integral equation (TDIE) and circuit macromodels. The traditional field-circuit simulation method constructs the Kirchoff's equations for lumped circuits with SPICE models, but they cannot handle problems with unknown circuit structures. The proposed method creates parametric macromodels to represent the port constitutive relations of the unknown circuits. Then the obtained macromodel is coupled with TDIE to enable the transient field-circuit cosimulation. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method. The proposed method is targeted to solve unknown I/O modeling issues in general signal integrity …

On Valuing Biopharmaceutical Product Pipelines: An Effectuation Model And Evidence, Mark J. Ahn, Anne S. York, Wei Wu, Yulianto Suharto, Tugrul Unsal Daim
Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
New creative approaches are needed to manage emerging biotechnology innovations, regulations, and payor environments to enhance product pipeline productivity, valuation, and risk management. Biopharmaceutical firms must make dynamic resource allocation decisions on their relative levels of internal R&D and external strategic alliances in furthering their pipelines. As the predominant method of using discounted cash flow (DCF) methodologies may lead to chronic underinvestment and performance, we evaluated the integration of traditional DCF with an effectuation model of analysis. Unlike traditional financial models that begin with the end goal of assumed known cash flows and recursively solve for portfolio optimization, the effectuation …
