The athletes completed a survey that was previously used and created by Brian Primack and reprinted with the author's written consent. The following …

The Epigenetics Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder In Women And Ptsd In Women Veterans: Implications For Health Policy, Cheryl R. Brubaker Msn, Sdnp, Fnp-Bc, Judith Milner Psyd Dec 2015

The Epigenetics Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder In Women And Ptsd In Women Veterans: Implications For Health Policy, Cheryl R. Brubaker Msn, Sdnp, Fnp-Bc, Judith Milner Psyd

DNP Forum

Women have long served in the military during war whether recognized or unrecognized, whether praised or unpraised, whether there by choice or not there by choice. Men and women both feel the wounds of war. So many times those wounds are very hard to ignore, and often those wounds are not so visible yet take their toll. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is commonly associated with combat, with war, and with being a veteran (Fischer, 2014). Our understanding of women formally deployed as soldiers into combat and the consequences for these women is less well defined. Through a meta-synthesis of published …

Risk Assessment Strategy For Late Preterm Infants, Nisha Nair, Constance Hill Dec 2015

Risk Assessment Strategy For Late Preterm Infants, Nisha Nair, Constance Hill

DNP Forum

Late preterm infants (LPIs), born between 34 and 36 6/7 weeks gestation, face many challenges. These infants comprise 71% of preterm births and 8.7% of all births in the United States (Hamilton, Martin, & Ventura, 2010). They have a higher incidence of medical complications than their full-term counterparts leading to longer hospital stays or readmissions (Consortium on Safe Labor, 2010; Khashu, Narayanan, Bhargava, & Osiovich, 2009; Pulver et al., 2010). The nurse’s role in educating parents of LPIs is pertinent as these babies are at heightened risk for a number of significant complications. The purpose of this project is to …

A Review Of The Principles And Benefits Of Cue-Based Feeding, Diana M. Cormier Dec 2015

A Review Of The Principles And Benefits Of Cue-Based Feeding, Diana M. Cormier

DNP Forum

Literature reflects that neonatal clinical practices are increasingly infant-driven, and promote, developmentally based care. Particularly, in the area of oral feeding, practitioners are moving away from traditional gestational age criteria for the initiation of oral feeding, or progressing feedings based on volume, instead they are trending toward feeding protocols that are based on developmental maturity.

A statement released by the American Academy of Pediatrics (2008), made the attainment of independent oral feeding one of the critical criteria for hospital discharge of preterm infants. This statement not only reflected the increased research attention on oral feeding acquisition and outcomes, it caused …

Commentary: Are Emergency Nurses Sbirt-Ready To Assist Vets And Other Chronic Non-Cancer Pain Patients?, Dorothy J. Moore, Danette K. Dutra

DNP Forum

Emergency Department (ED) Registered Nurses (RNs) spend significant time treating chronic pain patients. Chronic pain affects up to 100 million Americans (Simon, 2012) and as much as 30% of all opioid pain medications in the United States (US) are prescribed from EDs (Todd, Cowan, Kelly, & Homel, 2010). Abuse of these prescription drugs is America’s fastest growing drug problem (Paulozzi, Jones, Mack, & Rudd, 2011). For veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation New Dawn (OND), chronic non-cancer pain is the most frequent diagnosis (Higgins et al., 2014), and it is closely associated addiction disease. …

Understanding Veteran’S Health Beliefs: An Essential Part Of A Patient-Centered Approach To Treatment Adherence, Susan E. Phillips Dnp, Mph, Pmhcns, Mary Dolansky Rn, Phd

DNP Forum

Background: Patient centered care is a mechanism to encourage healthcare consumers to work together with health care professionals to achieve quality outcomes In the VA, non-adherence to treatment recommendations is problematic. Non-adherence results in poor use of VA resources as veterans come in for care but do not follow through with recommended treatment plans. Besides asking veterans about their health goals and preferences, understanding the veteran’s orientation regarding health beliefs and motivators for adherence to recommended treatment plans is essential for nurses who aim to help the veteran achieve healthy lifestyle behaviors.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to …

Purpose

Introduce telehealth concepts to pre-licensure nursing students via a learning module and to test its effectiveness using pre and post-tests.

Method

A two-tailed t test used to analyze the difference between the pre and post-test scores supported the research question: “Is the use of a new telehealth learning module effective in teaching pre-licensure nursing students about telehealth?”

Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that demographic variables had no influence on the outcome of either test.

Discussion

The results of the …

Handoff Communication In The Emergency Department, Kristen Matichko Dec 2015

Handoff Communication In The Emergency Department, Kristen Matichko

DNP Forum

The communication of patient information through use of handoff ensures continuity of care and patient safety. A study of hand-off reports between pre-hospital personnel and staff in the emergency department revealed a lack of complete or formal information dialogue. Nurses play a vital role in the process of communication and information exchange through the use of handoff despite minimal guidelines for that exchange in current nursing practice. The pre-hospital hand-off informational exchange impacts patient safety as well as the planning and implementation of nursing care based upon that information.

The sample used was from a convenience sampling of patients arriving …

Becoming Respectable: A History Of Early Social Responsibility In The Las Vegas Casino Industry, Jessalynn R. Strauss

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Today’s gaming corporations actively engage with their communities by supporting nonprofit organizations and adopting environmentally friendly practices among other socially responsible actions. This research considers precursors to modern corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the gaming industry by examining the philanthropic activities of the casino owners in Las Vegas in the early days of its development. This historical look at early philanthropy in the gaming industry provides a contextual background for considering contemporary corporate social responsibility. While the gaming industry has clearly come a long way from its early ties to organized crime, an understanding of this context helps further discussion …

The Warrior's Wives: A Tragic Opera In Two Acts With A Prologue, Matthew Evan Taylor Dec 2015

The Warrior's Wives: A Tragic Opera In Two Acts With A Prologue, Matthew Evan Taylor

Open Access Dissertations

The "Warrior's Wives" is a tragic opera in two acts that tells the stories of three women – Ikuku, Imiri, and Oku – married to the warrior, Ekpe. Inspired by Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart", this tragedy allows the audience to gain three different perspectives on the shared narrative of the women. I have adapted the story into my own libretto, developing the wives through my own original stories. These stories serve the greater storyline of identity, destiny, and a person's ability to shape their fate through their actions. Through this, the project explores issues of duty, love, fear, motherhood, …

Analyzing Characteristics Of Convection And The Relationship With Its Environment, Si Won Song Dec 2015

Analyzing Characteristics Of Convection And The Relationship With Its Environment, Si Won Song

Open Access Dissertations

Interactions between atmospheric deep vertical convection and larger-scale flow have been examined in three diverse modeling frameworks: a traditional climate model with cumulus parameterization scheme, an extremely computation intensive global convective-resolving model, and a simplified global primitive equation model with a linearized anomaly convective scheme. The first model is operational but has some chronic problems that call for more research, the second is promising but produces vast amounts of output data that are hard to interpret or even handle, and the third is satisfying for interpretation of the interaction processes, but illustrate some continuing challenges of atmospheric modeling, ultimately because …

Internal Fabrics And Microbial Precipitation In The Stromatolites Of Hamelin Pool, Western Australia, Paul D. Hagan Dec 2015

Internal Fabrics And Microbial Precipitation In The Stromatolites Of Hamelin Pool, Western Australia, Paul D. Hagan

Open Access Theses

Stromatolites are lithified organosedimentary structures that dominate the fossil record during the Precambrian and are present throughout the Phanerozoic. Modern examples of active stromatolites are rare. The hypersaline waters of Hamelin Pool in Shark Bay, Western Australia provide a habitat suitable for an abundance of stromatolite building bacteria. This embayment hosts the largest and most diverse known assemblage of modern stromatolites. Stromatolite accretion occurs through two primary processes: 1) trapping and binding of sediment by microbial mats, and 2) microbial precipitation of calcium carbonate. This thesis focuses on the identification and distribution of internal microfabrics of the stromatolites of Hamelin …

Retos Léxicos Y Estilísticos En La Traducción De Wolf Boys De Dan Slater, Rosario Del Reynoso

Theses and Dissertations

Translation is one of the oldest professions and has been an important factor in the development of the human knowledge. Without the translation of literary works, from ancient Greek and Latin classics to modern prose and poetry from across the world, we would not be able to enjoy literature, to read and learn from experiences by writers in other parts of the world. This thesis focuses on literary translation. It aims to produce a faithful translation into Spanish of four selected chapters of the nonfiction novel Wolf Boys: Two American Teenagers and Mexico's Most Dangerous Drug Cartel published by Dan …

Use Of Core Stabilization Exercise And Medical Exercise Therapy In The Treatment Of A Patient With Chronic Post Partum Low Back Pain: A Case Report, Zachary Chaloner, Kirsten Buchanan

Case Report Posters

Low back pain and lumbar hyper-mobility are common during and after pregnancy. Chronic postpartum low back pain (LBP) can be difficult to manage. Core stabilization exercises (CSE) have been shown to improve function and reduce pain in patients with chronic LBP due to lumbar instability. Medical Exercise Therapy (MET) has shown good outcomes in reducing pain in patients with LBP but has not been thoroughly investigated in the treatment of chronic post partum LBP. There is limited research reporting the use of a combined treatment protocol utilizing CSE and MET in the treatment of chronic LBP in postpartum women. The …

The Use Of Manual Therapy And Strengthening Exercises To Improve Plantarflexion Strength And Mobility Following Achilles Tendon Repair: A Case Report, Jason Glikman

Case Report Papers

Background and Purpose: The incidence of Achilles tendon ruptures is 1 in 10,000 per year, mostly affecting 30 to 50 year old males. These ruptures occur from either strong eccentric or concentric contractions of the gastrocnemius/soleus complex during acceleration or deceleration. Impact motions are common causes of this tendon ruptures. Neglected Achilles tendon ruptures occur when 4 weeks pass before treatment. This case report describes the clinical management of a patient with a neglected Achilles tendon rupture with global scar tissue formation due to a 3-month time period between injury and surgical repair, followed by a further 3-month time period …
