"It's Always With You, That You're Different": Undocumented Students And Social Exclusion, Jean Williams

Political Science

This study focuses on undocumented college students who overcame significant barriers to apply to and attend universities, and once on campus, were forced to conceal their immigration status from staff and peers, struggling to pay tuition without assistance from scholarships or federal loans. The concept of social exclusion is used to understand and explore the barriers to their access to higher education and experiences while in college, relationships to community and governing institutions, and struggles with poverty and discrimination. The Obama Administration’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals initiative provides the first real possibility to more fully pursue their educational and …

Extensive Dieback In Malosma Laurina In Coastal Exposures Of The Santa Monica Mountains Associated With Unprecedented Drought In California, Gina S. Gilderman, Kaitlyn E. Sauer, Gabriella N. Palmeri

Featured Research

Throughout coastal exposures of the Santa Monica Mountains (SMM) there is a recent emergence of widespread dieback in Laurel Sumac (Malosma laurina). M. laurina is a keystone species of chaparral that dominates the SMM. A significant trait of M. laurina is an extensive root system exceeding 12 m in depth. We hypothesized that M. laurina was weakened by unprecedented drought in California (2013-2015) and predisposed to fungal pathogens. An initial study conducted in the summer of 2015 revealed all stem samples taken from dieback adult M. laurina plants were infected with Botryosphaeria dothidea, while zero stem samples taken …

A Study In Diversity Management Of Local Governments In: Mecklenburg County, Nc; City Of Atlanta; Cobb County; Fulton County; Dekalb County And Gwinnett County, Joyce Yung

Master of Public Administration Practicums

This paper studies different diversity training programs and diversity policies employed in managing an increasingly diverse workforce of six jurisdictions that are comparable in size and in diversity. It asked what level of support do these public administrators receive from the leadership team in promoting diversity and inclusion and how do they evaluate and measure the diversity programs’ performance? What are the challenges of public administrators in establishing and cultivating an equitable and supportive diverse workforce that is reflective of the diverse public that they serve? This paper also examines how well the employee demographic representing the public of each …

Joshua Chamberlain On Mars: Chambermania And Beyond!, Ryan M. Nadeau

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to observe one fact about Mars: it has a lot of rocks. While each is typically given a name based on protocols of scientific classification, many are known by informal, often humorous names like "Grandma" and "Space Ghost." And now on Mars, there’s a rock for fans of Civil War history—"Chamberlain," named of course for Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, the hero of Little Round Top [excerpt].

Big Data Goes To Work: Liberating Latent Value In A Connected World, Peter Coffee Dec 2015

Big Data Goes To Work: Liberating Latent Value In A Connected World, Peter Coffee

Colloquia of the Department of Mathematical Sciences

Conversation around "big data" is too often focused on sheer volume, and the technical challenges of collection. More important are recent findings that roughly 7/8 of organizations look to data as history, not as news: that they use it to document past behavior, seek opportunities for cost reduction, and justify familiar and comfortable strategies and practices. The greater value lies in building predictive tools and recommendation engines that have the power to change behavior and create new value. Peter Coffee, the global VP of Strategic Research for cloud-computing leader Salesforce, will share observations on the engagement and transformation being enabled …

Chambers, Mike Pellant, Richard F. Miller, Jeffrey L. Beck, Paul S. Doescher, Eugene W. Schupp, Bruce A. Roundy, Mark W. Brunson, James D. Mclver

Reports

Sagebrush steppe ecosystems in the United States currently (2015) occur on only about one-half of their historical land area because of changes in land use, urban growth, and degradation of land, including invasions of non-native plants. The existence of many animal species depends on the existence of sagebrush steppe habitat. The greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) is a landscape-dependent bird that requires intact habitat and combinations of sagebrush and perennial grasses to exist. In addition, other sagebrush-obligate animals also have similar requirements and restoration of landscapes for greater sage-grouse also will benefit these animals. Once sagebrush lands are degraded, they may …

Effect Of Diabetes Self-Management Education On Glycemic Control, Compared To Usual Care In Type 2 Diabetic Patients At The Family Medicine Clinic, Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi, Catherine Wanjiku Gathu Dec 2015

Effect Of Diabetes Self-Management Education On Glycemic Control, Compared To Usual Care In Type 2 Diabetic Patients At The Family Medicine Clinic, Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi, Catherine Wanjiku Gathu

Master of Medicine in Family Medicine

Background: Globally, the magnitude of disease burden associated with diabetes is high. Poor glycemic control contributes greatly to this burden, especially in the occurrence of related complications. The value of Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) is evident in literature, and has been recommended as a way of optimizing glycemic and metabolic control and averting early onset of diabetes complications. Usual care involves spontaneous sharing of information during medical consultations without planned structure or defined time frame. In the African setting, the effect of DSME, and how it compares to usual care, is yet to be fully explored. Objective: To compare the …

Root Hydraulic Conductance In Laurel Sumac Experiencing Severe Dieback In The Santa Monica Mountains, Natalie M. Aguirre, Avery N. Davis, Sarah B. Nelson

Featured Research

Malosma laurina (laurel sumac) is a dominant species in coastal chaparral ecosystems, extending its roots down to an average of 40 feet in rocky, sandy soils. The deep root systems of M. laurina provide structural support for the steep Santa Monica Mountains. The roots also allow M. laurina to draw from the deep water table, increasing its drought tolerance. M. laurina dieback is prevalent in coastal exposures of the Santa Monica Mountains presumably due to historic drought predisposing plant tissues to infection by the fungal pathogen Botryosphaeria dothidea. In ecosystems that experience annual dry periods, a high hydraulic conductance …
