Inequality In Treatment Benefits: Can We Determine If A New Treatment Benefits The Many Or The Few?, Emily Huang, Ethan Fang, Daniel Hanley, Michael Rosenblum Dec 2015

Inequality In Treatment Benefits: Can We Determine If A New Treatment Benefits The Many Or The Few?, Emily Huang, Ethan Fang, Daniel Hanley, Michael Rosenblum

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

The primary analysis in many randomized controlled trials focuses on the average treatment effect and does not address whether treatment benefits are widespread or limited to a select few. This problem affects many disease areas, since it stems from how randomized trials, often the gold standard for evaluating treatments, are designed and analyzed. Our goal is to learn about the fraction who benefit from a treatment, based on randomized trial data. We consider the case where the outcome is ordinal, with binary outcomes as a special case. In general, the fraction who benefit is a non-identifiable parameter, and the best …

Implementing Pharmacist-Led Osteoporosis Testing And Education In Community Pharmacies, Chukwuemezie F. Chimezie, Nancy Williams, Henry Kinnard

Student Research

□ Osteoporosis is a common disease of the bones that is characterized by a decrease in bone density and bone strength, resulting in bone fragility.

□ In the United States, approximately 44 million people have low bone density, 10 million of whom have osteoporosis and 34 million with osteopenia. This equates to about 55% of the U.S. population aged 50 years and older. The number of people with osteoporosis-related fractures is predicted to increase dramatically due to the aging population of the country.

□ Osteoporotic bone fractures are responsible for pain, decreased quality of life, lost workdays, and disability.

Letter From The Editor: Farewell!, Jennifer Ortiz

GWU-Today

Change is inevitable. That’s seen clearly through Gardner-Webb’s shift from a physical student newspaper, The Pilot, to an online-only publication five years ago. It’s seen clearly through the new batch of student journalists, photographers and videographers who volunteer, contribute or sign up for the one credit course each semester. They bring in new ideas, interests and new perspectives to the table, and these aspects always change the style of GWU-Today, for better or for worse.

Mediating Teachers As Learners: Conversations From Shared Experience, Paul Watkins Dec 2015

Mediating Teachers As Learners: Conversations From Shared Experience, Paul Watkins

Administrative Issues Journal

Race to the Top mandates, much like other comprehensive reforms before, focuses on teacher quality and student outcomes. Measuring teacher quality, under Race to the Top reforms, remains a subject of uncertainty, particularly measuring for improvement. This article argues that a central purpose of classroom evaluation is to provide supportive, targeted feedback by differentiating teachers as learners. Drago-Severson and Mezirow offer a framework for adult learning that overlays this theoretical analysis. The three cases explored for this article demonstrate levels of adult learning among teachers, directing the novice to addressing the fully formed transformational learner. The cases promote professional learning …

Are Etfs Good Or Bad?, Steven D. Dolvin Dec 2015

Are Etfs Good Or Bad?, Steven D. Dolvin

All Chapters

Like many questions, the right answer is probably, "it depends." Whether ETFs are the best investment vehicle for a particular person likely depends on their goals and needs. However, with trillions of dollars being held by ETFs, their size has necessitated a broader discussion of their merits. This is particularly true in light of recent pricing issues where ETFs traded well below their NAV (such as in August of this year, as well as during the "flash crash" in May 2010). See a good summary article here: WSJ.

Are Junk Bonds Signaling Trouble Ahead?, Steven D. Dolvin Dec 2015

Are Junk Bonds Signaling Trouble Ahead?, Steven D. Dolvin

All Chapters

High-yield (or so-called junk) bonds are set to experience their first annual loss since the recent credit crisis. Because of the higher risk involved with these borrowers, they tend to be the first to experience trouble. Thus, many investors believe that they represent a leading indicator for overall market performance. If this is true, it could indicate trouble to come. See article here: WSJ.

Conceptualizing Brotherhood And Sisterhood: Does First-Generation And Or Being The First Greek Affiliating Family Member Matter?, Krista Rosner, Kaitlin Frazier, Alexandria Kennedy Dec 2015

Conceptualizing Brotherhood And Sisterhood: Does First-Generation And Or Being The First Greek Affiliating Family Member Matter?, Krista Rosner, Kaitlin Frazier, Alexandria Kennedy

Research Methods in Student Affairs (CNS 594)

The research currently in the field regarding brotherhood and sisterhood does not presently take into account first generation students who belong to greek letter societies and organizations. This lack of information results in the opportunity to raise awareness and understanding for this unique student population. First generation students are disproportionately members from underrepresented groups (Engle, 2007). They are also entering college less academically prepared (Choy, 2001). They are also more likely to work while in college (Saenz et al., 2007). These things in combination show inconsistency in the knowledge we have. While we already know that first-generation college students need …
