John Jasper: The Creation Of A Character, Blake Price Dec 2015

John Jasper: The Creation Of A Character, Blake Price

Honors Theses

On November 13th, 2015, I will be participating in my last mainstage performance at Western Michigan University. To say I’m excited to be finishing my college career as John Jasper in The Mystery of Edwin Drood, would be an absolute understatement. Over the course of the past three and a half years, I have had the rare privilege to split my time evenly between performing plays and musicals, which does not always happen for Music Theatre Performance majors. The ability to work with new directors on a variety of different styles of plays and musicals has given me the opportunity …

Potential Cellular Mechanisms Of Estrogen's Effects On Maintaining Sperm Production In Aging Rats, Matthew Pate Dec 2015

Potential Cellular Mechanisms Of Estrogen's Effects On Maintaining Sperm Production In Aging Rats, Matthew Pate

Honors Theses

Testosterone production by Leydig cells declines during aging in both men and rodent models. Previous results from our lab demonstrated that daily sperm production also declines in aging rats and alterations in the estrogen environment of the testis contribute to this decline. Importantly, estrogen treatment during aging was able to attenuate the age-associated decline in sperm production. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which estrogen maintains sperm production remain unclear. These experiments were designed to further investigate the effects of estrogen on sperm production in an attempt to further define the cellular mechanisms regulated by estrogen within the testis. …

Comparison Of Shareholder Value Between Full-Service Airlines (Fsas) And Low-Cost Carriers (Lccs)., William Kee Dec 2015

Comparison Of Shareholder Value Between Full-Service Airlines (Fsas) And Low-Cost Carriers (Lccs)., William Kee

Honors Theses

Shareholders in the airline industry invest in a service industry that is met with high fixed costs, capital, and external factors such as customer satisfaction and fluctuations in crude oil prices. On one end of the airline spectrum in the United States lie the full-service airlines, such as Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, or United Airlines adopting a product differentiation approach to capture a competitive advantage by providing greater benefits, comfort, and experience to the customer. This approach attracts customers that value the experience more so than simply the price of the fare, but is often met with high operating …

Creating Collaborative Parent-Teacher Learning Environments In An English Language Learner Setting, Joseph William Hutchins Dec 2015

Creating Collaborative Parent-Teacher Learning Environments In An English Language Learner Setting, Joseph William Hutchins

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

There is agreement in the academic community that parent involvement is critical to the academic achievement of all students. With the student population of America rapidly changing, the collaboration between parent and teacher continues to be more challenging. This study aims to explore the obstacles that inhibit collaboration with ELL (English Language Learners) families. The author documents details related to the barriers that exist in these relationships and current strategies commonly used to help with parent involvement in an ELL setting. Given the rapid increase in the Somali population in recent years in the Twin Cities, the author used this …

Disruptive Ambiguities: The Potentiality Of Jotería Critique In Communication Studies, Robert M. Gutierrez-Perez Dec 2015

Disruptive Ambiguities: The Potentiality Of Jotería Critique In Communication Studies, Robert M. Gutierrez-Perez

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Utilizing performative writing to interrogate the experiences of a queer Xicano male in the discipline of Communication Studies, this essay argues for specificity in dialogue with specificity to disrupt dominant and/or normalized power relations in Queer of Color Critique (QOCC) and beyond. After defining QOCC, the potentiality of jotería critique is offered as a decolonial queer praxis that focuses on hybridity, radical interconnectedness, and nonheteronormative mestiza/o sexual and gender subjectivities. Further, by embracing the ambiguities of hybridity and the politics of radical interconnectedness, Jotería communication studies is a nascent sub-discipline that works in the borderlands between …

(De) Stabilizing The Normative: Using Critical Autoethnography As Intersectional Praxis To (Re) Conceptualize Identity Performances Of Black Queer Immigrants, Godfried A. Asante Dec 2015

(De) Stabilizing The Normative: Using Critical Autoethnography As Intersectional Praxis To (Re) Conceptualize Identity Performances Of Black Queer Immigrants, Godfried A. Asante

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This review explores how critical autoethnography as a qualitative research tool can be used to capture some of the social and material realities embedded in the processes of embodiment and performance and its implication for queer of color critique. Using African immigrant queer identity performances as an example, I elaborate how autoethnography can be used to highlight multiple, complex and sometimes contradictory identity negotiation strategies used by African queer migrants to navigate simultaneous systems of privilege and oppression. I show that identities of African queer migrants are ongoing processes riddled with constant negotiation and re-negotiation with systems with power which …

Oral History And Performance As Research (Par): “Undocumented” Narratives Documenting Lived Experience, Daniel B. Chavez Dec 2015

Oral History And Performance As Research (Par): “Undocumented” Narratives Documenting Lived Experience, Daniel B. Chavez

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

The following article contends with what began as a Master’s Thesis project and performance that used an experimental and bi-methodological approach of “critical oral history performance” and “performance as research” in order to produce and analyze the oral histories of two Latina women who migrated via México during pregnancy as “undocumented” subjects. This method was then again used for another oral history performance project that centered on the narrative of an undocumented queer (lesbian) woman from Guatemala. Here, however, I explicate, in-depth, the experience of performing oral history work, focusing on my initial performance in 2011. By taking the time …

“I Am More Than That”: Exploring Betweenness Through Experiential Activity, Samantha Brown Fentress, Arielle Semmel Dec 2015

“I Am More Than That”: Exploring Betweenness Through Experiential Activity, Samantha Brown Fentress, Arielle Semmel

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

In this paper we present a pedagogical tool that can be used in and out of classroom settings to explore Diversi and Moreira's (2009) notion of betweenness, or liminal spaces within and among identities. Intricate Identities is an activity that invites discussion of the dynamics of identity and betweenness. In our paper, we share what we have learned through facilitating three variations of Intricate Identities with several introductory level classes. After providing a detailed description of each variation, we consider the students’ reactions to the identity activity. This consideration includes accounting for our own identities– facilitators rather than participants, instructors …

Naturally Striated Muscle: Investigating The Process And Consequence Of Ideographic Striation, Dustin L. Briggs Dec 2015

Naturally Striated Muscle: Investigating The Process And Consequence Of Ideographic Striation, Dustin L. Briggs

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

In U.S. America and much of the Western world, natural is a venerated symbolic placeholder for any number of assumed virtues and ideals. Present conflicts have brought forward questions about what natural (which I argue functions as an ideograph) should mean in contexts that seem to call for a formal, enforceable definition. In this study, I use the vocabulary of Deleuze and Guattari (1987) and the context of bodybuilding to work towards a theory of how ambiguous ideographs become "striated." In this discussion I present instances where natural has been employed as a vehicle to cause harm, and I offer …

Precognition: Bodies In Network, Kate Hoyt Dec 2015

Precognition: Bodies In Network, Kate Hoyt

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Precognition” is an installation that seeks to explore the liminal space between actor and environment, human and technology, and self and Other through the performativity of flow. Deleuze and Guattari use the term “flow” to describe a deliberately imprecise way of knowing or understanding meaning beyond, across, and within the existing category of the form (trans. 1987). Within the materialist ontology of poststructuralism, it is not the form that matters so much as the substance - energies and affects entangle us with our surroundings, affording a radical questioning of the rational, contained self that remains so central to the Western, …

Banksy At Disneyland: Generic Participation In Culture Jamming, Joshua Carlisle Harzman Dec 2015

Banksy At Disneyland: Generic Participation In Culture Jamming, Joshua Carlisle Harzman

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Culture jamming is a profound genre of communication and its proliferation demands further academic scholarship. However, there exists a substantial gap in the literature, specifically regarding a framework for determining participation within the genre of culture jamming. This essay seeks to offer such a foundation and subsequently considers participation of an artifact. First, the three elements of culture jamming genre are established and identified: artifact, distortion, and awareness. Second, the street art installment, Banksy at Disneyland, is analyzed for participation within the genre of culture jamming. This study finds that Banksy at Disneyland successfully participates within the genre, which …

Disrupting Privileged And Oppressed Spaces: Reflecting Ethically On My Arabness Through Feminist Autoethnography, Haneen Ghabra Dec 2015

Disrupting Privileged And Oppressed Spaces: Reflecting Ethically On My Arabness Through Feminist Autoethnography, Haneen Ghabra

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This essay urges for the need to explore one’s privileges and oppressions through Feminist Arabness. Through intersectionality, the author brings forth various experiences as a woman of color. By exploring privileges and oppressions, the goal is to bring contestations of domination into conversation with neoliberalism, reflexivity and ethical communication. Thus, this study is a call to highlight the need for an integrated approach that combines theory, and Autoethnography in order to reflect a richer intersectional analysis that combines both privileges and oppressions as identities. It is also a call towards an intersectional feminist ethic that can in turn identify the …

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 8(4): 425-430, 2015. Use of wearable technology to obtain various body metrics appears to be a trending phenomenon. However there is very little literature supporting the notion that these apparatuses can be used for research purposes in the field. The purpose of this study was to utilize Hexoskin wearable technology shirts (HxS) to obtain data in a pilot study using a trail hiking situation. Ten individuals (male, n = 4, female n = 6) volunteered to participate. On the first day, volunteers completed two approximately flat trail hikes at a self-preferred pace with a 15-minute …

Educational Experiences Of Foster Care Youth With Disabilities, Vanessa A. Thorrington

Open Access Dissertations

Youth with disabilities who live in foster care face unique obstacles as compared with their peers who are non-disabled and not involved in the dependency system. Transition services delivered through their special education program during high school and at the culminating Individualized Education Plan meeting are designed to assist these youth in their transition. Few studies have focused on youth involved in both systems (special education and dependency) and on their transition from the education system. Even fewer studies have focused on the perspectives of the youth during this transition. This qualitative study, using case study design, focuses on two …

Demystifying Variance In Performance: Toward A Multilevel Longitudinal Perspective Of Strategic Management, Guangrui Guo Dec 2015

Demystifying Variance In Performance: Toward A Multilevel Longitudinal Perspective Of Strategic Management, Guangrui Guo

Open Access Dissertations

Drawing upon complexity theory, this dissertation contributes both to inquiry on relative importance of business–unit, corporation, industry, and year effects on firm performance and to development of a multilevel longitudinal perspective of strategy. Empirically, this dissertation generates important new insights about variation in performance. This dissertation is the first to (1) capture substantial stable corporation–industry interaction effects that were confounded with stable effects of business unit, corporation, and industry in results of previous studies, (2) demonstrate that stable effects of corporation, industry, corporation–industry interaction, taken together, are of similar relative magnitude to that of stable BU effects, (3) reveal that …

Exploring Black/White Biracial Female Therapists’ Perceptions And Meaning-Making In The Context Of Providing Therapy, Anna Wheatley Scarbriel

Open Access Dissertations

Individuals born to parents from two or more different racial groups are one of the fastest growing population groups in the United States, with Black/White biracials making up the largest proportion therein. This diversification has permeated the field of psychology and counseling, and people of mixed race will increasingly be clients, colleagues, supervisors, and supervisees. It is imperative that the field of counseling and psychology turn attention not only to serving/treating mixed race clients, but also to providing training and supervision to mixed race professionals. In particular, much work remains to better understand the significance and impact of a mixed …
