Buildings With Rigid Walls And Flexible Roof Diaphragms. Ii: Evaluation Of A New Seismic Design Approach Based On Distributed Diaphragm Yielding, Maria Koliou, Andre Filiatrault, Dominic J. Kelly, John W. Lawson
Architectural Engineering
A seismic collapse evaluation study of buildings with rigid walls and flexible roof diaphragms (RWFD) presented in the companion paper indicates that this type of structure, as designed to current seismic design provisions in the United States, does not satisfy FEMA P695 performance criteria for Risk Category II Buildings. The seismic performance of RWFD buildings is often characterized by large deformations and yielding in the roof diaphragm rather than in the vertical elements of the seismic force–resisting system (SFRS). In this paper, a new seismic design approach is proposed to account for flexible roof diaphragm response. The proposed approach relies …

Hodgkin's Lymphoma Survivors' Intentions To Follow Survivorship Care Plans, Kortni Evans
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes, perceived subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control that Hodgkin's Lymphoma (HL) survivors had towards survivorship care plans (SCPs) and how those factors impact their intentions to follow a care plan. Participants were HL survivors who had completed treatment. An online self-reporting questionnaire was used to assess demographics and questions related to HL survivor's attitudes, behavioral intention, perceived subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. Frequency analysis and correlations were used to describe the participants and their attitudes, perceived subjective norms, and behavioral control in relation to participants' intentions to follow a …

Characterization Of The Paracoccidioides Hypoxia Response Reveals New Insights Into Pathogenesis Mechanisms Of This Important Human Pathogenic Fungus, Patrícia De Sousa Lima, Dawoon Chung, Alexandre Melo Bailão, Robert A. Cramer, Célia Maria De Almeida Soares
Dartmouth Scholarship
Background: Hypoxic microenvironments are generated during fungal infection. It has been described that to survive in the human host, fungi must also tolerate and overcome in vivo microenvironmental stress conditions including low oxygen tension; however nothing is known how Paracoccidioides species respond to hypoxia. The genus Paracoccidioides comprises human thermal dimorphic fungi and are causative agents of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), an important mycosis in Latin America.

Stable isotope labeling is central to NMR studies of nucleic acids. Development of methods that incorporate labels at specific atomic positions within each nucleotide promises to expand the size range of RNAs that can be studied by NMR. Using recombinantly expressed enzymes and chemically synthesized ribose and nucleobase, we have developed an inexpensive, rapid chemo-enzymatic method to label ATP and GTP site specifically and in high yields of up to 90%.We incorporated these nucleotides into RNAs with sizes ranging from 27 to 59 nucleotides using in vitro transcription: A-Site (27 nt), the iron responsive elements (29 nt), a fluoride riboswitch …

Exploration Of The Range Overlap Between Cynomys Leucurus And Cynomys Ludovicianus, Kenneth D. Choi
Exploration Of The Range Overlap Between Cynomys Leucurus And Cynomys Ludovicianus, Kenneth D. Choi
Honors Theses
The ranges of two species of prairie dogs, Cynomys leucurus and Cynomys ludovicianus, overlap in a narrow area in the western Great Plains in Wyoming. We used GIS software to map their distributions and infer land cover preferences within and on either side of the zone of overlap. In general, both species used habitats in proportion to their availability and did not display strong selection of their expected vegetation types (based on the literature). However, both species of prairie dogs were overrepresented in areas of human settlements and crops, which may indicate that these species prefer human-modified habitats, or perhaps …
L3 Auditory Interneuron Responses To Dual-Frequency Calling Songs In Female Crickets (Acheta Domesticus), Jeong Bin Lee
L3 Auditory Interneuron Responses To Dual-Frequency Calling Songs In Female Crickets (Acheta Domesticus), Jeong Bin Lee
Honors Theses
Female crickets exhibit positive phonotaxis in response to calling songs with specific carrier frequencies (4-5 kHz), syllable periods (SP; 50-70ms), and other parameters. Among a number of ascending prothoracic auditory neurons identified, only L3 has been proposed to be involved in SP selective phonotaxis. L3 responds with selective decrement to 5 kHz stimulus with attractive SPs. Furthermore, L3 is highly tuned to 16 kHz auditory stimulus, which has been correlated with aversive phonotactic behaviors. L3’s cellular responses to simultaneous 16 kHz and 5 kHz stimuli were examined through extracellular recording, thereby further establishing the connection between L3’s selective decrement and …

The key developments, the key players and an accurate state of the industry are hereby presented through the eyes of the ISPCS from this past eleventh symposium that spanned two days and was held …
Epigenetic Regulation Of Neurogenesis By Citron Kinase, Matthew Girgenti
Epigenetic Regulation Of Neurogenesis By Citron Kinase, Matthew Girgenti
Doctoral Dissertations
Patterns of neural progenitor division are controlled by a combination of asymmetries in cell division, extracellular signals, and changes in gene expression programs. In a screen for proteins that complex with citron kinase (CitK), a protein essential to cell division in developing brain, I identified the histone methyltransferase- euchromatic histone-lysine N-methyltransferse 2 (G9a). CitK is present in the nucleus and binds to positions in the genome clustered around transcription start sites of genes involved in neuronal development and differentiation. CitK and G9a co-occupy these genomic positions in S/G2-phase of the cell cycle in rat neural progenitors, and CitK functions with …
Efficient Methods For Mining Association Rules From Uncertain Data, Manal Hamed Alharbi
Efficient Methods For Mining Association Rules From Uncertain Data, Manal Hamed Alharbi
Doctoral Dissertations
Association rules mining is a common data mining problem that explores the relationships among items based on their occurrences in transactions. Traditional approaches to mine frequent patterns may not be applicable for several real life applications. There are many domains such as social networks, sensor networks, protein-protein interaction analysis, and inaccurate surveys where the data are uncertain. As opposed to deterministic or certain data where the occurrences of items in transactions are definite, in an uncertain database, the occurrence of an item in a transaction is characterized as a discrete random variable and thus represented by a probability distribution. In …
Contemporary And Historic Effects Of Fishing On Largemouth Bass Populations, Using Unexploited Populations For Reference, Jan-Michael Hessenauer
Contemporary And Historic Effects Of Fishing On Largemouth Bass Populations, Using Unexploited Populations For Reference, Jan-Michael Hessenauer
Doctoral Dissertations
Recreational fisheries represent complex coupled human and natural systems subject to intricate feedback loops. These feedback loops can affect anglers, fish populations, and the ecosystem. I studied the effects of recreational angling on Largemouth Bass Micropterus salmoides populations, using unexploited populations for references. Exploited populations contained significantly more individuals with low metabolic rates than unexploited populations, consistent with predictions of fisheries induced evolution. Naïve individuals from unexploited and exploited populations had equal initial angling vulnerability in standardized trials. However, individuals from exploited populations learned lure avoidance faster than unexploited individuals. The cumulative number of catch events best predicted catch rates, …

Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation aims to measure the impact of technical change on OECD Healthcare in a multi-stage framework and identify the different sources of outcome losses to allow for comprehensive policy implications within a diverse dataset including countries from a large variety of development levels facing different healthcare issues. We adopt an output-oriented DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) methodology to obtain the technical efficiencies in production and provision. Data used in this study is mainly obtained from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Health Data 2013 and consists of 34 OECD countries and 12 years between 2000 and 2011.
Infant Exposure To Potentially Traumatic Events In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Amy L. D'Agata
Infant Exposure To Potentially Traumatic Events In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Amy L. D'Agata
Doctoral Dissertations
Infants who begin life in the medicalized environment of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) do so under adverse conditions. The NICU experience exposes infants to experiences that are different from well newborns. The impact these cumulative adverse conditions have on long-term neurodevelopment has yet to be fully elucidated, however the literature reveals a broad scope of later life challenges for former NICU infants. This dissertation focuses on several novel inquiries that may shed light on individual vulnerabilities. First, a framework of infant trauma is proposed to support improved understanding of the infant experience. Context is provided for the history …

The Embodied Causal Learner, Vanja Vlajnic
The Embodied Causal Learner, Vanja Vlajnic
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Traditionally, cognitive psychology has assumed a disembodied learner and thinker. However, an emerging approach known as embodiment posits that seemingly irrelevant motor or perceptual aspects of a task can affect higher-level cognition. The findings from such embodiment studies have also been shown to extend into real-world settings. For example, children who were taught mathematical concepts while required to make gestures consistent with the problem’s solution were more likely, on average, to apply the mathematical concepts correctly in the future (Cook, Mitchell, & Goldin-Meadow, 2008). For this specific study, the area of causal learning was examined.
The primary goal of this …
