The Visual Priming Of Motion-Defined 3d Objects, Xiong Jiang, Yang Jiang, Raja Parasuraman
The Visual Priming Of Motion-Defined 3d Objects, Xiong Jiang, Yang Jiang, Raja Parasuraman
Behavioral Science Faculty Publications
The perception of a stimulus can be influenced by previous perceptual experience, a phenomenon known as perceptual priming. However, there has been limited investigation on perceptual priming of shape perception of three-dimensional object structures defined by moving dots. Here we examined the perceptual priming of a 3D object shape defined purely by motion-in-depth cues (i.e., Shape-From-Motion, SFM) using a classic prime-target paradigm. The results from the first two experiments revealed a significant increase in accuracy when a "cloudy" SFM stimulus (whose object structure was difficult to recognize due to the presence of strong noise) was preceded by an unambiguous SFM …
Nmr Studies Of Solvent-Free Ceramic Composite Polymer Electrolytes—A Brief Review, Marc B. Berman, Steven Greenbaum
Nmr Studies Of Solvent-Free Ceramic Composite Polymer Electrolytes—A Brief Review, Marc B. Berman, Steven Greenbaum
Publications and Research
Polyether-based polymer electrolytes containing ceramic inorganic oxide fillers often exhibit improved mechanical and ion transport properties compared to their filler-free counterparts. The nature of local scale interactions that give rise to these enhanced properties is explored by nuclear magnetic resonance measurements.
Molecules And Metals In The Distant Universe: Sub-Mm And Optical Spectroscopy Of Quasar Absorbers, Sean Stephen Morrison
Molecules And Metals In The Distant Universe: Sub-Mm And Optical Spectroscopy Of Quasar Absorbers, Sean Stephen Morrison
Theses and Dissertations
In order to gain a complete understanding of galaxy formation and evolution, knowledge of the atomic and molecular gas in the interstellar medium (ISM) is required. Absorption-line spectroscopy of quasars offers a powerful and luminosity independent probe of gas in distant galaxies. The Damped Lyman- systems (DLAs; 20.3 . log NHI ), are the highest neutral hydrogen column density quasar absorbers and contain a substantial fraction of the neutral gas available for star formation in the high-redshift Universe. This thesis presents a study of the metal content in some DLAs, based on optical spectroscopy, and a search for molecules based …
Integration Of Impulse-Variability Theory And The Speed-Accuracy Trade-Off In Children's Multijoint Ballistic Skill Performance, Sergio Lupe Molina
Integration Of Impulse-Variability Theory And The Speed-Accuracy Trade-Off In Children's Multijoint Ballistic Skill Performance, Sergio Lupe Molina
Theses and Dissertations
A major purpose of the motor learning and motor control literature is to provide principles and theories (e.g., speed-accuracy trade-off) that can inform the instruction of young learners in motor skill competence. To be optimally effective, these principles and theories must be understood and applied in relation to authentic instructional contexts, complex motor patterns, and specific developmental levels of young learners. It is insufficient, for instance, to generalize research results with adults learning simple movements in controlled laboratory settings to an understanding of how children learn from fundamental movement skills in physical education classes. Based on this premise, the work …

Industrial Robot Acceptance: Effects Of Workforce Demographics And Establishing A Culture Of Acceptance Within Manufacturing Industry, Melissa M. Henderson
Theses and Dissertations
Industrial applications have not been extensively researched regarding human-robot interaction. This project investigated industrial robot acceptance in the context of one manufacturing site. Acceptance was examined in relation to the workforce and conditions of acceptance were identified using mixed methodology. Quantitative (surveys) and qualitative (interviews) data was used to measure and analyze the existing state of technology acceptance and site culture. Based on this exploratory study, it was found the manufacturing facility has a weak culture but would be generally accepting of industrial robots if the technology were easy to use and useful. The identified boundary conditions to acceptance included …

This study helps to fill a research gap by promoting and educating performers about Villa-Lobos’ writing. The ultimate goals are to encourage informed performances of …
Supported Group Ib-Pd Bimetallic Catalysts Prepared By Electroless Deposition And Galvanic Displacement For Selective Hydrogenation Of Acetylene, Yunya Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
Ethylene is the building block for many chemical intermediates in the petrochemical industry. The current worldwide ethylene production is over 150 million tons per year and demand increases by 3-5% annually. However, ethylene produced from steam cracking of light naptha contains up to 2% acetylene which acts as a poison for the downstream ethylene polymerization catalysts. Selective hydrogenation of acetylene in the ethylene stream using supported Pd catalysts is the industrially preferred method of lowering acetylene to acceptable ppm levels (< 5 ppm). Due to inferior selectivity at high acetylene conversion and the formation of “green oil”, or ethylene/acetylene oligomers, during reaction, small amounts of Group IB metals have been added to improve the performance of current generation catalysts. However, the bimetallic effects of the above additives have not been experimentally confirmed, possibly because the conventional methods of catalyst preparation result in both monometallic and bimetallic particles with varying compositions. This in turn makes it difficult to determine the position of the two metallic components, and bimetallic interactions typically occur only when the two metals form proximal contact instead of separate particles. In this study, a series of Ag- and Au-Pd/SiO2 bimetallic catalysts were prepared by electroless deposition (ED) with incremental and controlled coverages of Ag and Au on Pd. The selectivity of acetylene to ethylene and turnover frequencies of acetylene conversion were enhanced at high coverages of Ag and Au on Pd surfaces due to the transition of acetylene adsorption modes, which was further confirmed by the kinetics of acetylene hydrogenation. The similar performance trends for Ag- and Au-Pd/SiO2 suggest that the bimetallic effect for these catalysts was likely geometric and not electronic in nature. For comparison, a series of reverse Pd-Ag/SiO2 bimetallic catalysts where variable coverages of Pd were deposited onto Ag surfaces was prepared using galvanic displacement (GD) of Ago by Pd2+ to further explore the nature of bimetallic effects for selective acetylene hydrogenation. Unlike for the earlier case for Ag on Pd surfaces using ED, for samples prepared by GD there was considerably diffusion of Pd into the Ag lattice to give greater electronic interactions between these two metals, which limited selectivity of acetylene hydrogenation to form ethylene.
Hydroxy Polybenzimidazoles For High Temperature Fuel Cells And The Solution Polymerization Of Polybenzimidazole, Kayley Fishel
Hydroxy Polybenzimidazoles For High Temperature Fuel Cells And The Solution Polymerization Of Polybenzimidazole, Kayley Fishel
Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, two different hompolymers of polybenzimidazole (PBI) containing hydroxyl functional units were synthesized via the PPA Process to produce gel membranes. These polymers and their phosphoric acid doped membranes were characterized to further explore structure-property relationships in functionalized PBI's. Fuel cell performance of the doped membranes was evaluated and compared to previously reported PBI membrane chemistries. Copolymers of p-OH PBI and para-PBI were prepared at five different copolymer compositions to examine the effects of hydroxy content on membrane properties and compared to the respective homopolymers. The reactivity of the hydroxy groups and the formation of phosphate bridges were …

Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics and motivations of major donors at three federal service academies and the six senior military colleges. Although much literature has been published on donor motivation, as well as studies determining what donor characteristics are linked to the decision of alumni to financially contribute back to their alma maters, research specific to the federal service academies and the senior military colleges could not be found. Therefore, this study addressed the void in the literature. The methods used to gather this data were survey instrument and personal interviews. The researcher sent letters …
Optical Spectroscopy And Chemometrics For Discrimination Of Dyed Textile Fibers And Magnetic Audio Tapes, Nathan C. Fuenffinger
Optical Spectroscopy And Chemometrics For Discrimination Of Dyed Textile Fibers And Magnetic Audio Tapes, Nathan C. Fuenffinger
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the application of both novel and standard chemometric approaches toward societal problems of interest in the areas of forensic science and cultural heritage preservation. Microspectrophotometry (MSP), a technique enabling measurements of absorption of electromagnetic radiation by microscopic materials in the ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) region, is widely used by forensic examiners for comparisons of metameric textile fibers. These comparisons are often hindered, however, by the raw or normalized spectra showing little detail or having few points of comparison. Derivative preprocessing can enhance structure in some instances. We have demonstrated through the use of multivariate statistics that derivatives are …

Nurses Utilizing The V.O.I.C.E.S. Hiv Prevention Intervention In The Black Church Community, Jason Richard
Theses and Dissertations
The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) epidemic is a significant problem in the United States, especially in the “Bible Belt” Deep South where the epidemic is hitting this region the hardest. The HIV epidemic in the state of South Carolina is very real, significant, and quite alarming. In fact, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) labels South Carolina as an HIV “hot spot.” All racial and ethnic groups are susceptible and impacted by HIV. However, evidence shows that African Americans – especially young adults 18-35, bear the brunt of the burden to the extent that the “new face” of …

The cold boroncarbide free radical (BC X 4Σ−) has been produced in a pulsed discharge free jet expansion using a precursor mixture of trimethylborane in high pressure argon. High resolution laser induced fluorescencespectra have been obtained for the B 4Σ−–X 4Σ− and E 4Π–X 4Σ− band systems of both 11BC and 10BC. An optical-optical double resonance (OODR) scheme was implemented to study the finer details of both band systems. This involved pumping a single rotational level of the B state with one laser and then …

Identifying Gene-Gene Interactions That Are Highly Associated With Body Mass Index Using Quantitative Multifactor Dimensionality Reduction (Qmdr), Rishika De, Shefali S. Verma, Fotios Drenos, Emily R. Holzinger
Dartmouth Scholarship
Despite heritability estimates of 40–70% for obesity, less than 2% of its variation is explained by Body Mass Index (BMI) associated loci that have been identified so far. Epistasis, or gene-gene interactions are a plausible source to explain portions of the missing heritability of BMI. Using genotypic data from 18,686 individuals across five study cohorts – ARIC, CARDIA, FHS, CHS, MESA – we filtered SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms) using two parallel approaches. SNPs were filtered either on the strength of their main effects of association with BMI, or on the number of knowledge sources supporting a specific SNP-SNP interaction in …

The Sustainable Development Goals: One-Health In The World’S Development Agenda, Lawrence O. Gostin, Eric A. Friedman
The Sustainable Development Goals: One-Health In The World’S Development Agenda, Lawrence O. Gostin, Eric A. Friedman
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by the UN General Assembly in September 2015, embody a One-Health strategy—healthy people living on a habitable planet. Extending beyond the social development emphasis of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which accelerated progress globally, though unequally, the SDGs also encompass a range of environmental and economic goals, with a health goal that is far more comprehensive than the infectious diseases and maternal/child health focus of the MDGs.
To be achieved, the SDGs require resources and political commitment that is yet to be demonstrated. With a cost that could reach $5 trillion for the SDGs …

Finding A Place To Belong: The Role Of Social Inclusion In The Lives Of Homeless Men, Meaghan Bell, Christine A. Walsh
Finding A Place To Belong: The Role Of Social Inclusion In The Lives Of Homeless Men, Meaghan Bell, Christine A. Walsh
The Qualitative Report
This study explores the role of informal social support networks of male homeless shelter residents. Authors utilized ethnographic methods, relationality and reflexive research approaches and key informant interviews with 10 shelter residents to investigate perceptions of belonging in overcoming social exclusion and countering the stigmatization cast onto as a result of their condition of homelessness. Study findings challenge our normative conceptions of homelessness by discerning between “rooflessness” and “rootlessness” suggesting that homelessness is more than the absence of shelter, but rather denotes the absence of support and inclusion in one’s community. This research highlights a community within the shelter characterized …

Exploring The Professional Beliefs Of An Efl Teacher: A Narrative Inquiry, Seyyed Ali Ostovar-Namaghi, Shabnam Norouzi, Mobina Hosseini
The Qualitative Report
The applied science model of teacher education implies that the relationship between theory and practice is unidirectional. In this study, however, the researchers make a case in the opposite direction, i.e., they believe that professional practice can also shed some light on theories of language teaching. Since narrative inquiry is best for capturing the detailed stories or life experiences of a single life, the researchers took it as a legitimate mode of research to uncover and make sense of the professional experience of an experienced and professionally popular language teacher. Analysis revealed six themes, which reflect the participant’s professional beliefs. …

Single Cell Resolution Mapping Of Mrna And Protein Expression Dynamics During Human Somatic Cell Reprogramming To Pluripotency, Frederick W. Kolling Iv
Doctoral Dissertations
In recent years, the fields of regenerative medicine and developmental biology have been revolutionized by the ability to reprogram adult somatic cells back to a pluripotent state, producing induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) through the induction of the reprogramming factors OCT4, SOX2, KLF4 and c-MYC (OSKM). The promise of this technique has been somewhat limited by the low efficiency and long duration of the process which produces heterogeneous mixtures of cells in culture, many of which fail to fully reprogram over a 3-4 week period. Research in recent years has focused on the underlying mechanisms of reprogramming and identifying rate-limiting …

Experimental Study Of Longitudinal Sorting Of Particles Differing In Size And Density, Nabila Mahjabeen
Experimental Study Of Longitudinal Sorting Of Particles Differing In Size And Density, Nabila Mahjabeen
Theses and Dissertations
Transport, deposition and erosion of sediment particles differing in size, shape and density may result in particle segregation, which in geosciences applications is generally referred to as sediment sorting. A thorough understanding of sediment sorting processes is important to describe and model a wide variety of natural processes such as the decrease in particle size and/or density in a fluvial system (downstream fining and/or lightening), the formation of economic placers, concentration of heavy minerals, chemical and metal pollutants etc. Sorting of sediment grains associated with sediment transport in the streamwise direction results in the development of longitudinal sorting patterns. Vertical …
