Monitoring Cloud-Prone Complex Landscapes At Multiple Spatial Scales Using Medium And High Resolution Optical Data: A Case Study In Central Africa, Bikash Basnet
Theses
Tracking land surface dynamics over cloud-prone areas with complex mountainous terrain and a landscape that is heterogeneous at a scale of approximately 10 m, is an important challenge in the remote sensing of tropical regions in developing nations, due to the small plot sizes. Persistent monitoring of natural resources in these regions at multiple spatial scales requires development of tools to identify emerging land cover transformation due to anthropogenic causes, such as agricultural expansion and climate change. Along with the cloud cover and obstructions by topographic distortions due to steep terrain, there are limitations to the accuracy of monitoring change …
The Art Traveler: Building A User Experience System To Discover Art, Yue Liu
The Art Traveler: Building A User Experience System To Discover Art, Yue Liu
Theses
With the increasing popularity of mobile devices and their apps, mobile technologies have changed the nature of travel significantly. With numerous travel apps available today, many tourists can become confused with which one to select and use. Another important factor is that a majority of travel applications are designed for everyone traveling everywhere, not specifically for one kind of tourist and one subject matter. The goal of this thesis is to create an effective and efficient user experience system.
The project is a travel planner for people to pursue an art tour of their own interest. It focuses on designing …
Environmental And Density-Dependent Modulation Of Type Iii Secretion System Genes In Pseudomonas Syringae Pv. Tomato Dc3000, Jennifer Louise Stauber
Environmental And Density-Dependent Modulation Of Type Iii Secretion System Genes In Pseudomonas Syringae Pv. Tomato Dc3000, Jennifer Louise Stauber
Theses
Pseudomonas syringae pathovar tomato strain DC3000 is a model bacterial plant-pathogen that utilizes a dedicated protein export apparatus, the type III secretion system (T3SS), to translocate virulence proteins called effectors directly into host cells. Because effectors suppress plant immune responses, activation of the T3SS is critical upon entry into the host. The P. syringae T3SS is controlled by the hrpRS-hrpL regulatory cascade, and is activated quickly by specific conditions. Different environmental stimuli have been reported to modulate T3SS gene expression in culture, however it is unclear how each signal affects hrpRS or hrpL. My objective was to identify how environmental …

Functional Movement Screen Score By Somatotype Category, Amanda Kelch
Functional Movement Screen Score By Somatotype Category, Amanda Kelch
Masters Theses
Background: The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a tool used by fitness and health professionals to assess the quality of movement patterns in active populations. The literature has established descriptive values for FMS scores in various populations. However there has not yet been a study establishing the descriptive values of FMS score based on the somatotype categories. Establishing these descriptive values may provide a better understanding of how an individual's somatotype affects their ability to move. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to establish FMS scores for the four simplified somatotype categories (normal, endomorph, mesomorph, and ectomorph). Methods: Participants …
What Happens If We Call Discrimination A Tort?, Anthony J. Sebok
What Happens If We Call Discrimination A Tort?, Anthony J. Sebok
Online Publications
Sandra Sperino’s Let’s Pretend Discrimination is a Tort, 75 Ohio St. L.J. 1107 (2014), argues that if the United States Supreme Court is really serious about treating Title VII and other federal anti-discrimination laws as nothing more than extensions of tort law, then the current Supreme Court’s anti-plaintiff approach is insupportable. Sperino does not hide her personal disapproval of the current trend to “tortify” federal anti-discrimination law (especially Title VII), but she recognizes that the fight against discrimination may have to be fought “through any means necessary” (to quote Malcolm X, not Sperino). So her article is a bit …
Income-Tested College Financial Aid And Labor Disincentives, Rajeev Darolia
Income-Tested College Financial Aid And Labor Disincentives, Rajeev Darolia
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
Working has become commonplace among college students; however, this activity can have unexpected financial consequences. Federal formulas implicitly tax the amount of financial aid students are eligible to receive by as much as 50 cents for each marginal dollar of income. This tax creates an incentive for college students to reduce income, though abstruse formulas and the timing of financial aid receipt are likely to limit responses. Using data from a national sample of financially independent college students in the United States, I do not find that students bunch below earnings protection thresholds in a manner that would indicate attempts …
A Comparison Of High-Intensity Power Training And Graded Treadmill Exercise, Eric Peter Sparks
A Comparison Of High-Intensity Power Training And Graded Treadmill Exercise, Eric Peter Sparks
Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to investigate acute blood lactate concentration, heart rate, blood pressure, and rating of perceived exertion following two different types of exercise: a high intensity power training exercise test and a graded treadmill exercise test. The hypothesis was that the HIPT exercise test would yield higher levels of blood lactate, heart rate, blood pressure, and RPE, immediately post exercise when compared to a graded treadmill exercise test. Ten college-aged participants with a body mass index /m2, blood pressure <140/90 mmHg, no overt cardiovascular disease, no cardiovascular medications, and no use of tobacco products were included in the study. All participants had a general fitness and training level that allowed them to perform the exercise bouts without any hesitation. Subjects participated in two exercise sessions on separate occasions. A graded treadmill exercise test occurred with the subjects walking on the treadmill until the self-stated desire to stop or until five stages of increased speed and intensity had occurred. In the second meeting, subjects completed a prescribed high-intensity power training exercise test. Heart rate (HR), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), blood pressure (BP), and blood lactate concentration were all obtained before and immediately following each training session, as well as immediately following each stage of the graded treadmill exercise test. Oxygen uptake was obtained during the graded treadmill exercise test. After both tests were conducted, the high intensity power training exercise test showed a higher percentage of blood lactate concentration at its conclusion when compared to the graded treadmill exercise test with lower final average values BP, HR and RPE. In conclusion HIPT exercise yields higher blood lactate concentrations compared to graded treadmill exercise with a lower blood pressure, heart rate, and perceived exertion.

Spectroscopy Of Quasibound And Long-Range Rydberg States Of Ultracold 85rb2, Ryan A. Carollo
Spectroscopy Of Quasibound And Long-Range Rydberg States Of Ultracold 85rb2, Ryan A. Carollo
Doctoral Dissertations
Ultracold atomic physics offers an experimentalist the opportunity to perform sensitive tests and measurements that are not possible at higher temperatures. In this case it allows for access to molecular states, through photoassociation, that are inaccessible to conventional techniques. We use photoassociation to measure quasi-bound levels of the 2 1Σg+ state of 85Rb2 . With these data, we examine a coupling between the short-range Hund’s case (c) 2 (0g+ ) component and the long-range 2 (1g ) state, which corresponds to the 1 1Πg state. A second experiment studies the …

Designing Transit Networks For Equity And Accessibility, Kelly L. Bertolaccini
Designing Transit Networks For Equity And Accessibility, Kelly L. Bertolaccini
Doctoral Dissertations
The equitable provision of public transportation services is a major concern for transit planners and service providers around the world. However, very few tools are available to planners seeking to incorporate equity concerns into their transit network designs. This research proposes innovative models for directly incorporating equity into the stop sequencing and stop grouping components of the Transit Network Design Problem (TNDP) and develops a solution method, a genetic algorithm, for solving these models. First, a single route model is developed to test the effects of designing routes according to different definitions of equity. This research explores nine possible inequity …
Enhancing Upper-Level Performance From Below: Performance Measurement And Optimization In Lte Networks, Ruofan Jin
Enhancing Upper-Level Performance From Below: Performance Measurement And Optimization In Lte Networks, Ruofan Jin
Doctoral Dissertations
The current 4G LTE cellular networks provide significantly higher data rate and lower network latency than earlier generation systems. The advances provided by LTE, however, may not be fully utilized by upper-level protocols and applications. In this dissertation, we first investigate the predictability of link bandwidth in cellular networks. We then design and implement a new transport protocol that utilizes the link bandwidth prediction framework. Last, we design and implement a control-theoretic approach for adaptive video streaming for cellular networks.
For cellular link bandwidth prediction, we conduct an extensive measurement study in major US commercial LTE networks and identify various …
An Examination Of The Factors And Characteristics That Contribute To The Success Of Putnam Fellows, Robert A. J. Stroud
An Examination Of The Factors And Characteristics That Contribute To The Success Of Putnam Fellows, Robert A. J. Stroud
Doctoral Dissertations
The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition is an intercollegiate mathematics competition for undergraduate college and university students in the United States and Canada and is regarded as the most prestigious and challenging mathematics competition in North America (Alexanderson, 2004; Grossman, 2002; Reznick, 1994; Schoenfeld, 1985). Students who earn the five highest scores on the examination are named Putnam Fellows and to date, despite the thousands of students who have taken the Putnam Examination, only 280 individuals have won the Putnam Competition. Clearly, based on their performance being named a Putnam Fellow is a remarkable achievement. In addition, Putnam Fellows go …
Professional Values And Conflict Among Social Workers In Prisons: An Examination Of Role Stress, Strain, And Job Satisfaction In Working With Inmates With Mental Illness And/Or Substance Use Disorders, Hiroki Toi
Doctoral Dissertations
As the incarcerated population increases in the United States, especially those with mental illness and/or substance use disorders, social workers are expected to assume essential discharge planning roles in assisting prisoners’ transition back into the community. Social workers, like other prison professionals, experience value dilemmas and difficulties in ethical decision-making due to incompatibility between professional values and the practices in correctional settings. Often, social workers in prisons face role problems mainly represented by role incongruity, role ambiguity, and role conflict. Such stress creates role strain, which may profoundly affect job satisfaction. Job satisfaction of staff is important because it affects …

Twitter has rapidly gained popularity since its creation in March 2006. Stock is a popular topic in Twitter. Many traders, investors, financial analysts and news agencies post tweets about various stocks on a daily basis. These tweets reflect their collective wisdom, and may provide important insights on the stock market. In this dissertation work, we investigate using the tweets concerning Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) stocks to analyze the stock markets and assist stock and option trading.
The first part of the dissertation focuses on understanding the correlation between Twitter data and stock trading volume, and predicting stock trading …
Mhealth Risk Screening In Urban Primary Care, Martha R. Staeheli
Mhealth Risk Screening In Urban Primary Care, Martha R. Staeheli
Doctoral Dissertations
Background: Urban, underserved populations experience considerable disparities in the screening, prevention, and treatment of chronic disease, including behavioral health disorders. Screening patients for such problems is widely recommended, yet is challenging to do in a brief primary care encounter, particularly for this complex patient population. Electronic risk screening provides one method of eliminating disparities in the identification of risks, while limiting burden on providers.
Objectives: 1) Screening data were compared to EHR data to assess differences in the prevalence of 12 risk factors and clustering of risks; 2) Patients screening positive for behavioral health problems were followed to determine rates …
A Deeper Semiotic Richness: Empowering English Language Students Through Digital Storytelling, Karah Parks
A Deeper Semiotic Richness: Empowering English Language Students Through Digital Storytelling, Karah Parks
Master's Projects and Capstones
The current philosophies underpinning TESOL higher education curricula and classroom practices still reinforce the essentialized narrative of the native speaker and teach English as an objective, disinterested, linguistic system of static signs (Blommaert, 2010; Kramsch, 2009; Larsen-Freeman, 2015; Pennycook, 1997). This has significantly limited the development students’ identities, and agency within English language speaking communities. To address this issue, this project contains a supplemental, online digital storytelling curriculum for intermediate to advanced adult learners at the university level in U.S. colleges as a means of scaffolding intentional identity development through multimodal, symbolic competence in the English language. Entitled Creative ESOL: …

The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) expedition 347 cored sediments from different settings of the Baltic Sea covering the last glacial-interglacial cycle. The main aim was to study the geological development of the Baltic Sea in relation to the extreme climate variability of the region with changing ice cover and major shifts in temperature, salinity, and biological communities. Using the Greatship Manisha as a European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling (ECORD) mission-specific platform, we recovered 1.6 km of core from nine sites of which four were additionally cored for microbiology. The sites covered the gateway to the North Sea and …

Aim: To detect pathological brain conditions early is a core procedure for patients so as to have enough time for treatment. Traditional manual detection is either cumbersome, or expensive, or time-consuming. We aim to offer a system that can automatically identify pathological brain images in this paper.Method: We propose a novel image feature, viz., Fractional Fourier Entropy (FRFE), which is based on the combination of Fractional Fourier Transform(FRFT) and Shannon entropy. Afterwards, the Welch’s t-test (WTT) and Mahalanobis distance (MD) were harnessed to select distinguishing features. Finally, we introduced an advanced classifier: twin support vector machine (TSVM). Results: A 10 …
