Primary care providers have terminated patient-provider relationships when they deem them no longer therapeutic. Healthcare providers are increasingly considering this an acceptable practice. However, the criteria for this decision remain unclear. As providers discharge challenging or difficult patients from their practices, questions to support this decision arise. Discharged patients face displacement and healthcare is disrupted. This project will (a) describe problematic patient-provider relationships and its effects, (b) identify possible alternatives to the firing of patients, (c) list appropriate reasons for termination, and (d) present recommended procedures to avoid allegations of medical abandonment. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine the instructional understanding and effectiveness of a district wide implementation of a Common Approach to Instruction. This research study provided a greater understanding of the affects that such an implementation had on certified staff regardless of grade level, experience, subject, or gender.

This explanatory, sequential, mixed methods study was conducted during the summer, spring, and fall of 2014-2015. Here's to victories big and small as we wind down 2015. Senate Bill 2039, the bill that in part authorizes IMSA to spend our Income Fund, was passed yesterday by the Senate and signed by Governor Rauner after clearing the House last week. As a reminder, the IMSA Income Fund consists of earned revenue coming from IMSA student and program fees. While this is not State funding, the Illinois General Assembly must authorize IMSA to use this revenue. The authorization is up to $3,050,000, but we can only spend the funds that we generate. With the current balance in this …

We report on the effects of low energy ion implantation on thin films of pentacene, carried out to investigate the efficacy of this process in the fabrication of organic electronic devices. Two different ions, Ne and N, have been implanted and compared, to assess the effects of different reactivity within the hydrocarbon matrix. Strong modification of the electrical conductivity, stable in time, is observed following ion implantation. This effect is significantly larger for N implants (up to six orders of magnitude), which are shown to introduce stable charged species within the hydrocarbon matrix, not only damage as is the case …

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore and compare the lived and career experiences of Black women higher education administrators in the United States and South Africa. This comparative study elucidated the women’s experiences while giving voice to Black women, whose experiences and status are often further marginalized under new managerial practices. This research used the theoretical lenses of intersectionality and carelessness, a new managerial practice within higher education, to uncover the challenges, opportunities, and contexts experienced by these women within gendered, racialized organizational structures and practices. A three-month time period was used to develop a postpartum education program change by designing a discharge nurse role on the postpartum unit at University of North Carolina Women’s Hospital. The goal of the education change is to increase patient satisfaction scores of discharged post-natal mothers on the postpartum unit by having HCAPS and Press Ganey to improve up to10% over the next 6 months.

The overall goal of this project was to increase HPV 2nd and 3rd dose compliance rates by a combined 10% among the female adolescent population (ages 11-26). This study investigated the feasibility of quantifying hearing aid benefit by means of speech-in-noise testing, specifically a modified version of the QuickSIN. Participants were recruited from the files of a licensed audiologist and all had sensorineural hearing loss, requiring hearing aids. Nineteen experienced hearing aid users were selected to participate in the study. Each individual listened, in aided and unaided conditions, to sentences embedded with increasing levels of background noise. Signal-to-noise ratio loss scores were calculated and averaged across conditions. Additionally, the relationship between participants’ audibility indexes and aided and unaided signal-to-noise ratio loss scores were analyzed. Results from this …

There is ample research on the public’s perception of individuals who stutter, but little research was found about the public’s knowledge about the definition and etiology of stuttering. The present study attempted to address whether college students in a specific area of study possessed either quantitative or qualitative differences in their knowledge about the definition and etiology of stuttering. Subjects included 80 males and 100 females across 9 different academic colleges to assess their knowledge of stuttering. Five open response questions were presented to each participant. Purpose: This thesis attempted to quantitatively analyze the individual cell fate choice in resistant head and neck UM-SCC38 cells exposed to cisplatin using the most current techniques available.

Methods: UM-SCC-38 cells were grown in Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium (DMEM) supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS). They were treated with cisplatin and ATM/ATR inhibitors of known dosages. Using live cell imaging, one hundred cells were tracked in each experiment and their behaviors were analyzed and entered into Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet to generate cell profile graphs.
