This project analyzes natural variables influencing the coastal and dune evolution in Isla Salamanca National Park (ISNP), a biosphere reserve and Ramsar site located in Colombia, on the Caribbean coast. Since at least the early 1950s, the park has been affected by eroding trends along most of the shoreline. Particularly, most modern dunes are located close to the coastline, forming scarped dunes regularly affected by storm wave-action.

Research examining the “planning fallacy” indicates that people frequently underestimate the time needed to complete tasks, and that this underestimation bias stems from a tendency to base predictions on plans that are idealized and oversimplified. The present research tested a potential debiasing strategy – known as backward planning – that involves beginning with the future target goal in mind, and working backwards toward the present by imagining all the steps needed to attain that goal in a reverse-chronological order. This research investigated the impact of user-generated videos on students’ attitudes towards the police. A survey was conducted at Wilfrid Laurier University in Brantford and was administered to 200 students consisting of a number of control variables such as age, race, police contact, and neighbourhood context, along with measurements of attitudes towards the police. It measured online video viewing habits along with familiarity of three online videos. Multivariate analysis showed that watching user generated videos had little to no impact on students attitudes towards the police. As a response to economic pressures, police services are turning to intelligence led policing (ILP). ILP promises ‘smarter’ and more efficient policing with the use of advanced technologies and data analysis for decision-making. The present study examines ILP implementation in one urban Canadian police department. Relationship research has long emphasized the importance of felt security for interpersonal wellbeing, but has focused less on how opportunities for growth influence relationship well-being. The present research investigates whether people’s motivational states may influence the extent to which people value growth in their romantic relationships. Drawing on regulatory focus theory, which distinguishes between promotion (concerned with advancement) and prevention (concerned with security) self-regulatory orientations, it was hypothesized that promotion-focused individuals would be more satisfied with relationships that offered greater opportunity for growth than with those that offered greater opportunity for security. Contact between people with mental illness (PMI) and police is on the rise. The current study analyzed a six-month period of official police data (N = 400 occurrences) to provide a description of the PMI that came into contact with police and the typical characteristics and outcomes of these encounters. Results indicated that these interactions were initiated by family members and are taking place at home. Police are most commonly resolving the situations formally with apprehensions under the Mental health Act (55%), however only half of the time these apprehensions result in the PMI being admitted into hospital care, …

This thesis explores the transmission of the Epitome Rei Militaris of Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus and the Strategemata of Sextus Iulius Frontinus in the Compendium Moralium Notabilium. Completed by Paduan judge Geremiah of Montagnone in around 1310, the Compendium Moralium Notabilium is a large medieval florilegium contemporary with Thomas of Ireland’s Manipulus Florem. The Compendium is distinct from typical medieval florilegium due to its lay author, its internal organisation, and its inclusion of many classical Roman and Greek authors as well as common Italian proverbs and secular liturature. In Western society we encounter contrasting prescriptions for how to live a happy life. Some argue the key to life satisfaction is living in the moment (e.g., seize the day), while others herald the importance of focusing on the future (e.g., pursuing goals, following one’s dreams). We suspect, however, that these prescriptions do not work the same for everyone. Persistent inward current (PIC) is a membrane property critical for increasing gain of motor neuron output. In humans, most estimates of PIC are made from plantarflexor or dorsiflexor motor units with the participant in a seated position with the knee flexed. This seated and static posture neglects the task-dependent nature of the monoaminergic drive that modulates PIC activation. Seated estimates may drastically underestimate the amount of PIC that occurs in human motor neurons during functional movement. Young North American women are currently coming of age in a sociopolitical context governed by neoliberal ideology, post-feminist assumptions, agentic femininities, and demographic trends that have lengthened pathways to adulthood. Consequently, the avoidance of early reproductive experiences has become a key requisite governing the success of the young female subject. This project explores the diverse reproductive experiences of eleven young (≤ 24 years of age) women residing in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Previous research has proposed that the somatosensory feedback generated during exercise is a key component in regards to the mechanism underlying the therapeutic effects of exercise on the motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD). This thesis aimed to further examine the contributions of different forms of somatosensory feedback during exercise in PD in order to understand the mechanism for symptom improvements that certain exercise studies report.

This dissertation examines the global mobility of security knowhow in relation to the management of terrorism in megacities. Specifically, it offers three insights. First, it shows how historical events are performed as sites in need of transnational policy intervention. Second, it enables an understanding of how and why the sourcing of policy ‘models’ actually takes place. Third, it sheds light on how mobile policy schemes travel geographically and are put to work in particular contexts. This dissertation undertook a critical review of four recycling policies used in Ontario which are designed to promote household waste diversion and reduce material management costs. These policies include:

1) Municipal funding should be directly tied to program performance relative to their peer group. 2) All municipalities should make investments in recycling promotion and education, and will be reimbursed $1 per household for all recycling promotion and education expenditures

Ex Ante Choice Of Jury Waiver Clauses In Mergers, Darius Palia, Robert E. Scott

This paper examines empirically why sophisticated parties in some merger and acquisition deals choose to waive their right to jury trials and some do not. We examine merger agreements for a large sample of 276 deals for the 11-year period 2001 to 2011. We exclude private company deals and those where the choice of forum and law is Delaware. First, we find that 48.2% of the deals have jury waiver clauses. Second, we find that deals in which New York is chosen as the governing law and forum state are more likely to include a jury waiver clause. No other …

This brief essay reflects on Kenneth Anderson and Benjamin Wittes's book "Speaking the Law: The Obama Administration's Addresses on National Security Law." It suggests that "Speaking the Law" overestimates the clarifying and constraining force of the executive branch's counterterrorism speeches, and that the legal policies they set out may be better understood not as a reticulated regulatory scheme, but rather on a common law model.

How could federal appellate judges call it a “procedural shortcut” when a state judge, in a death penalty case, signs the state attorney general’s proposed judicial opinion without even striking the word “proposed” or reviewing the full opinion? การวิจัยในครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ ศึกษาภาวะผู้นำใฝ่บริการ ผลการปฏิบัติงานของครูผู้ประสาน งานโครงการฟื้นฟูศีลธรรมโลก และความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างภาวะผู้นำใฝ่บริการกับผลการปฏิบัติงานของครูผู้ ประสานงานโครงการฟื้นฟูศีลธรรมโลก ประชากรที่ใช้ในการวิจัย จำนวน 537 คน คือผู้อำนวยการโรงเรียน หรือรองผู้อำนวยการผู้รับผิดชอบโครงการในโรงเรียนดังกล่าวตั้งแต่ครั้งที่ 1-8 กลุ่มตัวอย่างกำหนดขนาด จากตารางสำเร็จรูปของ Yamane ได้ 222 คน เลือกโดยวิธีการการสุ่มหลายขั้นตอน เลือกผู้ตอบแบบ เจาะจงโรงเรียนละ 1 คน เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัยเป็นแบบสอบถามได้รับแบบสอบถามที่สมบูรณ์คืนมา จำนวน 195 ชุด คิดเป็นร้อยละ 87.84 สถิติที่ใช้ในการวิจัย ได้แก่ ค่าร้อยละ ค่าเฉลี่ย ส่วนเบี่ยงเบน มาตรฐานและค่าสัมประสิทธิ์สหสัมพันธ์ของ Pearson ผลการวิจัย พบว่า 1) ระดับของภาวะผู้นำใฝ่บริการของครูผู้ประสานงานโครงการฟื้นฟูศีลธรรม โลกโดยรวมอยู่ในระดับสูง โดยมีองค์ประกอบด้านการมุ่งมั่นพัฒนาบุคคลค่าเฉลี่ยอยู่ในอันดับสูงสุด รอง ลงมาคือการสร้างชุมชน ส่วนการฟังมีค่าเฉลี่ยในอันดับตำที่สุด 2) ระดับผลการปฏิบัติงานของครูผู้ประสาน งานโครงการฟื้นฟูศีลธรรมโลกโดยภาพรวมมีผลการปฏิบัติงานอยู่ในอันดับสูง โดยองค์ประกอบด้านกิจวัตร ประจำวันมีค่าเฉลี่ยอยู่ในอันดับสูงที่สุด รองลงมาคือด้านกิจกรรมสร้างสรรค์สังคม ส่วนด้านการจัดการ เรียนรู้มีค่าเฉลี่ยอยู่ในอันดับตำที่สุด 3) ภาวะผู้นำใฝ่บริการของครูผู้ประสานงานโครงการฟื้นฟูศีลธรรม โลกมีความสัมพันธ์ทางบวกกับผลการปฏิบัติงานอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ 0.01
